With the remarkable @amandaeliasch discussing the #baroque Salons of Mayfair & The Savile Owls - #owls are the Symbol of #Minerva & wisdom & crest of both the Savile Family & Mayfair are hidden throughout the Savile Estate Including #SavileRow - The salons of the Celebrated Queer Torchbearers of Mayfair were hosted by #lesbian artist & saloniere #dorothysavile (1699-1758) who created the Savile Estate along with her protégé & husband’s lover the #queer #architect #williamkent (1685-1748) - Like King JamesI, Queen Anna, & George Villiers in the Jacobean between 1720 - Dorothy Savile, her husband Richard & William Kent lived together as man & wife & lover for 28years. I’m campaigning to have a statue of the #CountessofBurlington & #Cork #DorothySavile who ran the Burlington salon which was attended by #handel #Swift #Garrick and numerous other eccentrics of the first half of the 1700s & she was the heiress of the age but her husband gave her freedom few women however wealthy enjoyed. She funded numerous great #eccentrics of the age many of them @gay like her husband Richard Boyle & - together they shared a passion for #culture - They were the power couple of #Mayfair & with her protege the #architect #gardener #williamkent they #palladiumised #london & built #savilerow & the #savileestate ... Burlington House is now the #royalacademy & in 1660-1667 was originally built by The #worldsfirst #womanarchitect #ladyelizabethwilbraham who passed her designs off to her pupil the #engineer #christopherwren to protect her husband’s reputation & is only now being recognised as the true architect that has defined London’s unique #skyline .... one of the many #women #eccentrics of the 17th Century I explore in my book #TheEccentrics 💜 writing this book & discovering these magnificent women & men was a promise I made to my godfather #quentincrisp & has enabled me to withstand the #pain & #degeneration of #malignant #braintumour (at Burlington Arcade)

Created in 1640s by the #stuart #Medici dynasty with #inigojones & later in 1660s worlds first woman architect #ladyelizabethwilbraham & her pupil & engineer #christopherwren & #palladianised in 1700’s by #williamkent one of #handels lovers (like handel “Kentini”was part of #dorothysavile Duchess of Burlington & Corks salon #burlingtoncircle was hosted in #Burlingtonhouse now the @royalacademyarts in fact she created the first Burlington Arcade in 1725 although it was rebuilt in 1810 in its current form. There was an #oysterbar at the back of the house and it did irritate her that the chaps coming to and through such as handle swift and Alexander pope Brought the smell of #oystershells on their slippers - it has been fully rebuilt twice by the #grosvenorestate who have owned Mayfair since Thomas Grosvenor married Mary May Davies - Who Mayfair is named for! Dame May was a #Catholic Eccentric & her wild scandals created such havoc her family put her in a mental asylum for 40 years to stop her running off to Paris and marrying inappropriate #Irishmen though as an Irish woman, my Gran often lamented are there any appropriate #Irishmen ? 💜 (at Home House)

The Order of The #crownofStuart trimmed with #trueblue of the House of Stuart & the #purple of #DeMedici - I shall wear it to the @englishnationalopera Monday night for the opening of #awinterstale with @daniellismore & #NikideMetz in honour of the Mother of #Opera #MarieDeMedici who discovered #Peri ... & introduced it to #London during her years living in #StJames'sPalace which she turned into an artist salon for #TheArts . During this time her son in law the #Stuart #KingCharlesI commissioned the Architect #inigojones to build the area of #CoventGarden in 1630's course so many great #eccentric #luminaries of #opera made their home in #Mayfair & composed the majority of their #operas in #English after #DorothySavile #DuchessofBurlington & #Cork - & lured #Handel to live with her in her & the Duke of Burlington & Cork in 1710 building the #BurlingtonArcade (rebuilt in 1810) so his shoes wouldn't get wet on his way from the house she found him on #brookstreet in 1712 (at English National Opera)

I’ve just been interviewed for a #podcast by Emma of #londonmagazine to coincide with the article I wrote for the London Magazine (the physical magazine) about my life growing up in #Mayfair & the history of Mayfair’s #eccentrics & the #Dandy including the history of my own ancestors who lived in Mayfair #danieloconnell The Great #irishliberator (his #blueplaques on #albermarlestreet ) he not only gained emancipation for the #Irish but he also had #slavery #abolished in Britain & its colonies (inspired by Ignatius Sancho ) #dorothysavile #countessofburlington & #cork who ran the Burlington Circle (now #royalacademy frequented by #handel #Garrick #Swift & other historic residents of Mayfair in the first half of the 1700s. almost everyone I’ve ever admired has lived in Mayfair including my own family & xhusbands #nancymitford #oscarwilde #beaubrummell #ignatiussancho who was born a slave & rose To become the major composer of #dancemusic in the #regencyera when over 1/3 of all Mayfair residents were Irish. Even our own #queen was born in Mayfair.. The London Magazine is the oldest magazine in history & has published the works of some of the most illustrious writers all of whose achievements dwarf my own 13 novels many of which are set in Mayfair. I think my favourite books are the teenage series I wrote to stay close to my teenage children whilst they were at boarding school - they’re set in a fictional #etoncollege & #stmarys #ascot #pullingprinces #calypsochronicles #Bloomsbury USA did a bind up of them for the #royalwedding called #royalmatch & #royalmess in 2012 I’ll let you know when the magazine comes out. #beaubrummell was a leading #mayfair #Regency #Dandy & like most #Eccentrics was a mass of tantalising contradictions ⚜️After designing the distinctive “ribbons” of his school uniform at #EtonCollege which remain enshrined as part of the uniform, Beau joined the #hussars 💜 The word homosexual wasn’t in use in his lifetime but #Dandy & Dandizette were first used as insults by #Puritan #bigots to deride “feminine men” & bookish #genderfluid #women in the #Halcyondecade of opulent fashion the 1630s! Both Dandy & #Dandizette were enthusiastically embraced by the #Cavaliers ⚜️Beau gave up his dream to be the #poet of the age & instead garnered his place in #history by redefining what masculinity meant through the sartorial ⚜️He was also famed for his prodigious Sulks - leaving #Cambridge in his first year after loosing the #Oriel #Poetryprize & claiming to have walked out on his #Hussar regiment because his uniform was soiled. ⚜️His statue stands in debonair elegance on #Jermynstreet - named for #HenryJermyn - the Father Of The #WestEnd & the first man to drink #champagne from Queen Henry’s 4inch ruby slipper in 1632.
