Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 30: Shiny
The types of text show the different languages being spoken Player Piglin Enderman
If anyone wants to be part of a taglist for A Familial Unit, feel free to message me/send an ask/or mention it in reblogs.
--------------------------
When Tommy still lived in Phil’s cottage, Phil occasionally let Tommy drag Techno home from Hypixel to babysit him.
Tommy called it a sleepover. Phil called it babysitting. Techno called it dinner and a bed, with the payment being hours spent with Tommy – which he didn’t mind as much as he pretended.
During those hours Techno would teach Tommy Piglin.
He actually got pretty good and now Techno and Tommy can have completely secret conversations.
- - -
Tubbo and Ranboo do not know Piglin. They had a little Piglin son, so that was a problem.
Ranboo can understand Enderman, he just doesn’t know how to form sentences with the proper grammatical structure. Michael knows the basics of Enderman because he went to hang out with them sometimes in the Nether. So Michael and Ranboo can communicate, barely.
Tubbo really has no way of communication other than tone and gestures.
But Michael knows enough to understand that he’s safe and that they will take care of him.
- - -
“Hey Michael,” Tubbo said. “You’re going to meet your Uncle Tommy today.”
Michael smiled at the soft tone in Tubbo’s voice. He turned to Ranboo and tilted his head, asking him what was said.
“Meet someone,” Ranboo said in Enderman.
“Who?”
“Tommy.”
“Who that?”
“Dads’ friend.”
“Oooh.”
There was a knock at the door. “I’ll go get him. Tommy’s at the door.”
Tommy climbed up the ladder. He glanced around and found Tubbo sitting on the bed with a little Piglin. “Hello.”
Michael waved. When Tommy got to his feet Michael held out his arms. “Gold.”
Tommy smiled, and pretended he didn’t understand.
Tommy came to the middle of the room and let Michael jump off the bed.
“Gold.”
Tommy plucked Ranboo’s crown off his head. “Piglins like gold right?” He held it out for Michael.
Ranboo huffed and tried to grab his crown back. Tommy decided that being annoying was the play and held the crown out in Micharls direction while pushing Ranboo away.
“Let me give him a gift. I didn’t bring anything.”
“Gimme back my crown!”
Michael was internally warring with himself; he wants the gold but he knows that Ranboo doesn’t like it when he grabs at his crown. But Tubbo wasn’t helping Ranboo and wasn’t yelling at Tommy, he was just laughing.
Michael looked at the smile on Ranboo’s face. “Can I?”
“What?” Tommy asked.
“I give back future,” Michael said in his broken Enderman. “On my word.”
Ranboo looked between Michael and Tommy’s puppy dog eyes. “Okay.”
“Yay!” Tommy made a beckoning motion.
Michael hopped off the bed and trotted over to Tommy. “Gold.”
Tommy dropped the crown on Michael’s head. The little Piglin smiled and Tubbo clapped.
“Hey Tommy, you sure you good to baby sit Michael for the day?”
“Yes of course. I need to make sure Michael likes his Uncle Tommy the most.”
Once Tubbo and Ranboo had given Michael is forhead kissing and decended the ladder Michael held his hands out for the top of Tommy’s head. “Gold.”
“This isn’t gold. This is the colour of my fur.”
Michael sent him a shocked expression. “You can understand me?”
“Yes.”
“You can talk back to me?”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t start with that?”
“Didn’t feel like it. Your father’s would have put us both on the sport to have a conversation.”
“But-“
“They would have been continuously asking us back and forth and it would have gone on forever. We wouldn’t have really been able to talk.”
“Oh.”
“Why don’t I teach you Player? Then you can talk to your fathers on your own and don’t need me.”
“Would you?”
“I think my Piglin is good enough to teach you Player.”
“Could you? Could you? Could you?”
Tommy sat down in the middle of the room and patted the floor next to him.
“So the problem is making the sounds right?”
“Yes.”
“I had the same problem with learning Piglin.” Tommy looked around the room wondering where to start. He landed on the family picture. “Okay. So your fathers. Player has a lot of words for father.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And some of them are basic Player sound. Do you know which one Tubbo is?”
Michael got up and ran to point at Tubbo’s picture. “This one.”
“Good. Dada.”
“D-“ Micharl shock his head. “Da-“
“Dada,” Tommy encouraged. “Dada.”
“Da. Da. Dada.”
“Dada!”
“Dada!”
“Tubbo.”
Michael pointed to his picture. “Dada.”
“Good! Now for Ranboo.”
Michael pointed to his other father in the picture.
“Papa.”
“Dada.”
“No no. Pa. Pa. Papa.”
“Pa.”
“Pa.
“Papa.”
“Good!”
For the next ten minutes Tommy went back and forth randomly saying Tubbo and Ranboo’s names. Michael would point to the correct father and say either “Papa” or “Dada.” Tommy kept giving him positive reinforcement, even when he stumbled on the sounds.
“Papa said you’re fathers’ friend. How to I say that in Player?”
“I don’t like you’re quite there yet piglet.”
Michael squealed happily at the honorific. “Why not?”
“Well the word is friend. And that’s a few too many sounds for our first lesson.”
“Oh. Yeah.”
“Besides. Ranboo is wrong. I’m your father’s brother. Piglin doesn’t have a word for uncle does it? There’s not special word for father’s brother is there?”
“No.”
“Well. I’m Dada’s brother.”
“Really?”
A soft smile fell on Tommy’s face. He beckoned Michael forward again. “Not really. I’m Dada’s brother the way you are Dada and Papa’s son. We were taken in by Philza.”
“Za?”
“Yes. Have you met him?”
“He has gold fur as well.”
Tommy laughed and pulled Michael in his lap. “Yeah. He does. Philza took in me and Wilbur. He never officially took in Tubbo or Technoblade, but they are my brother’s as well.”
“Technoblade?”
“Yes. Techno. He translated his Piglin name into Player when he was first introducing himself. He likes it. He’s the one who taught me Piglin.”
“I have a Piglin name. I like my Player name better though.”
“Michael is a good name.”
Michael burrowed his little head in Tommy’s chest. “Wanna keep my Player name.”
“You can keep your Player name.”
“Can I? Even if I tell you my Piglin name.”
“Of course. May I call you it if we’re talking in Piglin. It’s a little hard to switch from Piglina back into Player for only one word.”
“Yes you can. I’m Quiverlance.”
Tommy heart melted a little. “Techno called my Littleblade, so if you wanna call me that you can.”
“Littleblade?”
“Papa. Dada. Uncle.”
“Papa. Dada. Littleblade.”
“Uncle.”
“Littleblade.”
“Come on. Try.”
“Un. Un. Un. Le.”
“C-.”
“C-.”
“Un. C. Le.”
“Un. C. Le.”
“Uncle.”
“Un. C. Le.”
“Uncle.”
“Unc. Le.”
“Uncle.”
“Uncle.”
“Uncle!”
“Uncle!”
“Papa. Dada. Uncle.” Tommy point at each of them in turn.
Michael copied him. “Papa. Dada. Uncle.”
“Good.”
“Littleblade!”
“Next time I’m here I’m going to teach you how to say our names.”
“Littleblade!”
“Michael.”
Michael dropped his chin.
Tommy patted his head. “Let’s play a game.”
“Okay!”
- - -
Needless to say when Tubbo and Ranboo came up the ladder to discharge Tommy from babysitting duties, they were in for quite the surprise when Michael came running up to Ranboo. “Papa! You’re crown back.”
Ranboo froze as Michael held out the gold in front of him.
“Papa?”
Michael turned back to Tommy questioningly. He thought Papa – he likes that word – would be happy.
“Don’t worry piglet. He’s just a little shocked. Wasn’t expecting me to teach you any Player.”
“Oh. Papa. Crown.”
Ranboo was still staring at Michael with wide, but proud, eyes.
“Dada? Crown?” He held you the gold for Tubbo. But Tubbo was looking wildly between the Michael and Tommy. “Dada?”
Tommy eventually took the crown from Michael and plunked it back on Ranboo’s head. “Next time you leave me alone with him for a few hours you’re going to get him back saying your names. Get over yourself.”
“What the fuck Tommy?” Tubbo demanded.
“Bye Tubbo. See you next time. Remember to tell your kid that you’re happy. Bye piglet!”
“Bye Littleblade.”
Before Tommy descended down the hatch he asked Michael one final question. “I’m the best uncle right?”
“Uncle!” Michael cheered.
“Tommy!” Tubbo shouted.
The blond simply waved, dropped down the ladder, and just left the house.

Something To Treasure
Something To Treasure - #doodlewashApril2021 #WorldWatercolorGroup #watercolor #chipmunk #grapes
Thought I’d jump in for the prompt of “Grapes” today, with a little chipmunk eating some ripening ones. While I’ve always celebrated April as my birthday month, today is actually the official day of my birth (and I was even born on a Tuesday!). Also, it’s a bit of a milestone as I’m turning 50 years old today. This was the number that came with a lot more of those extra little wishes of things…

Hubby on Dragon
#DoodlewashApril2021 prompt: Dragon. I’m cheating a little bit. This is a drawing I did for my hubby’s birthday some 38 years ago. It’s been on our wall ever since. It has his face, but the beard and everything else is made up. Back then, most of my work was done totally in stippling, dot by excruciating dot. Eventually, I got carpal tunnel and arthritis, so I don’t stipple very much anymore.

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 4: Eggs
Set in @itsmoonphobic’s Summer Vacation Au
--------------------------
Purpled perked up at the sound of knocking. From the window. Not his bedroom door. The window. He pulled himself up from his bed and opened it.
“It is 9:47pm and I am ready to fight God,” Tommy proclaimed.
“That’s nice. Don’t do anything stupid.”
“You and I both know that’s asking way to much of me.”
“Us!” Tubbo popped into view.
Purpled looked over their shoulders to see Ranboo on his lawn with a wagon. “Tommy?”
“We’re going to egg Foolish’s house. He was a bitch to me last week.”
Purpled shook his head fondly. “Is there anyone who you haven’t called a bitch.”
“Tubbo.”
“That’s just a lie.”
“Yeah....”
“So no one?”
Tommy glared at Purpled. “Well are you coming?”
“Oh I have a choice?”
“No. No. You don’t. Come on Purp.” Tubbo put his hand against the fly screen. “Join us.”

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 10: Hot Air Balloon
Set it @itsmoonphobic’s Summer Vacation Au
--------------------------
“I will push you,” Ranboo threatened.”
“No you won’t,” Antfrost said. “I will not be liable for one of you falling out of the basket.”
“You won’t be. I’m the one who pushed him.”
“Who’ll push him” Purpled corrected. “Put it in future tense, you’re not pushing Tommy out.”
“Why not?”
“Because we convinced Tubbo not to bring the parachutes.”
Tommy made an affronted sound. “That’s the only reason why I shouldn’t get pushed out?”
“Yup.”
“Yup.”
“Yup.”
Tommy shot Antfrost an exasperated these are the people I’m friends with look.
“If it makes you feel better I have a different reason why you shouldn’t get thrown out of the hot air balloon.”
“Depends on what it is.”
“I’ll loose my job.”
Tubbo snorted.
“No pushing anyone out of the basket parachute or not.”

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 7: Beach
Set in @itsmoonphobic’s Summer Vacation AU.
Used a dialogue prompt from @writingpromptsandjunk.
--------------------------
“We’re not friends. You’re just someone I talk to and hang out with occasionally.”
“That means we’re friends, dumbass.”
“No.” Purpled shook his head. “Gamer Boy, Sammy Green, and Hannah Rose are my friends. Tommy is just an extrovert who kidnapped me in the first grade.”
“Tommy’s good at that,” Ranboo agreed. “Haa. I remember being kidnapped in sixth grade.” Ranboo bumped the volleyball over the net.
“I did not kidnap you,” Tommy said, bumping the ball back over the net. “I befriended you.”
Purpled volleys the ball up for Ranboo to spike. “Not your friend.”
Ranboo scoffed. “You are our friend. Stop pretending you aren’t.”
Tubbo crashed into the sand bed to keep the ball in the air. “Come on Purpled. Admit it.”
“You love us.” Ranboo hit the ball back from Tommy’s volley over the net.
“Maybe.”

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 3: Bees
Set in @itsmoonphobic‘s Summer Vacation AU
Purpled and Ranboo break into Techno’s house and fill Tommy and Tubbo’s room with bee ballons. Purpled reflects on his friendship with Tommy. How Tommy just walks into his house and says “I know what we’re going to do today.”
--------------------------
Ranboo was casually walking down the street when Purpled did a drive by on his bike. “Ran!”
He startled and stood frozen as his friend did a hard U-turn.
“Ran! Are you busy?”
“No?”
“Hop on!”
Ranboo blinked. He shrugged and stepped onto the pegs of Purpled’s bike. He stabilized himself on Purpled’s shoulders and they were off. That’s when he remembered to ask questions. “Why? Where are we going?”
“Techno’s.”
“Techno’s? You?” This really wasn’t a scenario he expected from this blond. The other one? Of course! But Purpled? Kidnaping him from the street to go to Techno’s?
“Do you know how to get in?”
“Pardon?”
“I don’t have a key.”
“Yes I know where the spare key is. Why?”
“I’ll tell you later.” Purpled tilted them to the right as they veered around another corner.
Ranboo jumped off when they reached Techno’s lawn. Purpled dropped the bike to the grass and snatched his back pack.
“Key?”
“Okay?”
Ranboo grabbed the spare from under the doormat; unlocked the door; opened it; and rehid the key. Purpled pushed past him and they closed the door behind them.
“Hey Techno,” Purpled said on his way up the stairs. He backtracked a few steps. “Sorry about breaking in. You’re used to it right?”
Ranboo waved at his confused expression and followed Purpled all the way to the room Techno had given to Tommy - and Tubbo.
“So Ranboo.”
“Purpled.”
“You know Hannah?”
“Yes.”
“She works at the party supply store.”
“She does.”
The blond dumped out his bag in the middle of the room. “They needed to clear store shelves for new stock. So I got the employee discount and at half price.”
Ranboo picked up one of the packets that had fallen onto the floor. “50 piece bee balloons?” He kicked the pile. “Many. How did those all fit in your bag?”
“Effort.” Purpled tossed a hand pump to Ranboo who caught it before it hit him square in the face. “You start on this, and I’ll go get us electric balloon pumps.”
“Are we just filling this room with balloons?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Payback.”
“For what?”
Purpled gave Ranboo he look. He thought about it for three seconds. He finger gunned. He ripped open the packet and sat on the bottom bunk. “Who do you think sleeps on the top?”
“The first person up the ladder,” Purpled said as he ran out the room.
- - -
Techno had left Purpled and Ranboo to their own devices upstairs for a few hours. He lumbered up the stairs and peeked into Tommy’s room. He saw the two kids on the top bunk with a layer of yellow and black balloons on the floor.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Hi Techno!” Purpled smiled. “Sorry about the balloon pieces you’re going to have sitting around your house for the indefinite-forever.”
Techno nodded to himself. “I’ll keep them out of here if they walk in.”
“Thanks Techno! You’re the best.”
Techno waved them off and went back down to make himself, and the two kids, some lunch.

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 1: Joker
Set in @itsmoonphobic’s Summer Vacation Au
Another month, another daily prompt list. It has come to my attention that I’ve done a prompt list every other month. So innkeeping with tradition, I have searched the internet for a suitable prompt list. Doodlewash is a watercolour prompt list - like that Witcher Blog prompt list - I’m going to be using it for MCYT writing.
I hereby implore you to enjoy the next month of content.
--------------------------
The joker is the wild card; you never know where in the deck it is, and you can be fairly certain that when used against you, it won’t have your best interests at heart.
- - - - -
Tommy and Tubbo share a glance. They exchange twin smiles.
Tommy walks to the door and opens it with a dramatic bow. Tubbo returns the bow with a giggle and they walk into the kickboxing center.
“Hello Punz!”
“Oh no. Oh no no no.”
“What’s wrong big man?”
“Get out. Get out now. I do not want to see either of you in here. I’ve hung out with Dream recently. I’ve hear stories about you.” Punz points a finger at Tubbo. “And you too. You are not. Get out.”
“Oh come on big man!”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I am not teaching the two of you kickboxing.”
“Please Punz.”
“No.”
“Come on! It’ll be fun!”
Punz gave the two of them a dry look.
“We promise to not attack your brother,” Tubbo said. “We won’t hurt Purpled.”
“Besides,” Tommy added. “Purpled as been doing kickboxing for years! I may be a big man who can do anything, but I know when I’m going to loose a battle.”
“And Ranboo?”
“The bitch had it coming.”
“He has strong caves. I’d know.”
Punz put his head in his hands.
Then the adult in the room came over to them. She put a hand on Punz’s shoulder. “Aren’t you supposed to be helping the other students?”
“I am helping them. I’m keep these two away from everyone.”
She gave him a look.
“Please Hafu. I know these boys. They should not learn how to kickbox.”
“We shouldn’t discourage people from starting a new passion.”
“Please Hafu.”
“Why don’t you give them a starter lesson?”
“Oh no. Hafu please. They should not-”
“Why don’t you boys go with Punz over there and he’ll give you a starter lesson. A tester. See how it goes and we’ll go from there.”
Tommy pumped his fist. “Yeah!”
“And you’ll be keeping us away from everyone else!” Tubbo piped up. “Just like you wanted to do!”
Punz put his face in his hands and groaned.
Once Tommy and Tubbo started to pester him he didn’t have a chance. He could at least make sure they new how to protect themselves when Tommy does something stupid enough.
- - -
Phil sighed deeply. Techno was right. Tubbo and Ranboo really did need a cooking lesson. To the point where he regretted offering his kitchen for them.
Tubbo and Ranboo look at each other over the mess they created. They stifle a laugh.
“Oops?”
“Oops.”
“What do you mean oops,” Phil asked. “I just had to put out an oil fire. You’re making an edible salad. Literally the only instruction you had was don’t put spaghetti or candy in it. How did you start an oil fire?”
“I don’t know.”
“Gah!” Phil pointed to the door.  “Get out. This is. No. Please. Tubbo.”
“Yes Phil?”
“How did you manage to successfully make sandwiches for that picnic a while back?”
“I have no idea.”
- - -
Techno walked into his living room.
Ranboo and Tommy where sitting on opposite couches glaring at each other. One of them quirks a smile. The other follows suite.
Techno slowly backs out of his living room.
He’s just going to spend the afternoon at Dreamless and catch up with Dream. That’ll be a better use of his time than whatever those two have planned.
- - -
Purpled wakes up to his phone pinging with a volley of texts. The blindly grabs at his phone. He blinks the sleep from his eyes.
4:00am. Great. Fuck.
He clicks on the newest Discord notification.
“Dark mode my beloved,” he mumbles.
Tommy and Tubbo incoming. Purpled Purpled Purpled I tried to stop them No I didn’t That would have been a lost cause Purpled Purpled Wake up Come on I know you’ll be mad at me But it was this Or pebbles on your window Or a rock Probably a rock Purpled We’re on your street Please open the window Tommy is very close to grabbing a rock
Purpled drags himself out of bed. He goes to the window and opens it. He takes off the fly screen and climbs onto the roof.
“Aww! Come on Ranboo. You had to text him?”
“Well...”
“Thanks Ranboo.”
Tubbo held out his arms. “Come down!”
“You can’t catch me. And it’s four am.”
“You’re on the roof talking to us.”
“No.”
“Ranboo may be on your side but he will hoist me up there if I asked.”
“No I wouldn’t.”
“Bitch boy.”
“Well that was just uncalled for.”
“Come down!”
Purpled groaned. He rolled back through the window. He put up the fly screen and closed the window.
Ranboo holds both Tommy and Tubbo by the scruff of their sweaters. “Let’s give him five minutes okay? Then you can burn the house next door down.”
“Okay!”
Purpled comes stumbling out the front door. A pair of running shoes slipped on and in day wear. “’Kay, what are we doing today.”
Tubbo throws a bundle at his head.
Purpled holds it out in front of him. A dino hoodie. With purple sleeves. That’s when he notices that Tommy, Tubbo, and Ranboo are wearing matching hoodies. Red sleeves. Green sleeves. Black sleeves.
“At four am! You coulodn’t wait for this!”
“We were up!”
“I wasn’t!”
“We were up!”
“I wasn’t!”
“I wasn’t either! They just walked through my balcony.”
“You live on the fifth floor of an apartment build and the fire stairs are inside.”
“I know!”
Purpled groaned.
“Put it on.” “Put it on.”
He put it on. “Happy?”
“Yes.”
“Can I go back to sleep.”
“No.”
“Tommy.”
“We’re going to Techno’s.”
“Can I sleep there?”
“Yes.”
“Ranboo carry me.”
“No.”

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 25: Sailboat
If anyone wants to be part of a taglist of this Pirate AU, feel free to message me/send an ask/ mention it in reblogs/leave a comment.
Taglist: @sleepysnails
--------------------------
Tommy and Tubbo row their little sailboat to get somewhere. They go for so long that Tubbo gets tried.
“Get some rest. I’ll keep guard.”
“Mkay.”
Tommy takes off his coat and drapes it over his friend’s tired form. “Good night Tubbo.”
“Night Tommy.” He snuggles down into the coat. “Don’t let us get eaten by monsters. Okay ?”
“Of course Tubzo.”
Tommy honestly didn’t know where to go. They had been living the pirate’s life for two years at this point, but it was much simpler to find a job at port than on the ocean. Tommy decided to head due west; he knew there was land that way.
Eventually, hours later, as dawn cusps on their backs, Tommy sees another ship on the horizon.
What to do? They didn’t have any provisions and had no idea where they were. All Tommy knew was that they were probably in pirate waters because Wilbur hated riding the official channels and they had just set off two days prior. They couldn’t have gotten too far. Now to wonder if the ship was friendly or hostile?
Tommy glanced over at Tubbo.
He’d have to chance it.
Tommy went forth and started rowing towards the ship. He was still a good distance away when a voice yelled down at him from the starboard. “Halt!”
Tommy looked up to the banister, where he saw a woman with pink hair and a brown caplet looking down at him through the barrel of a gun.
“Who are you?” she asked. “What do you want?”
“Safety!” Tommy yelled up at her. He brought the oars back up into the boat. He shifted closer to Tubbo and obviously put his hand on the pistol at his side. “Who are you?”
“You first boy! We don’t take stowaways.”
“But we haven’t even stowedaway yet,” Tommy joked.
The lady gave him an unamused smile.
“Tommy! Tommy Soot!”
“Soot?” The lady lowered her gun slightly. She then brought it back up. “You aren’t a Soot,” she accused. “Captain Soot has no family.”
Tommy put one hand up in a placating manner; but he did so in a way that provided cover for Tubbo. His other stayed at the gun. “I took on the name!”
“When?”
“Within the past few months! I was a deckhand aboard the S.S. Sally for Captain Soot!”
“And your friend?”
“Him the same! We worked together!”
“Tommy what’s going on?”
“Nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
The lady moves to point her gun to Tubbo. “What’s your name boy?”
“Tubbo Underscore,” he answers immediately. “You?” he asks, blinking the sleep from his eyes.
She lowered her weapon and looked at them straight on. She saw them not as threats, but as two haggard and defensive boys on a sailboat. “Underscore?”
“Yes Ma’am.”
She pointed the barrel back to Tommy. “And what are you doing with the young Lord Underscore? Using the name Soot no-less.”
“Living!” Tommy responded.
Tubbo smacked his arm.
“I won’t be harbouring rich boys on my ship.”
“Wonderful,” Tommy yelled. “Can we go now? Pretty sure you don’t want to me the lady who kills us either!”
She lowered her weapon, but kept it pointed at them. “You worked for Captain Soot?”
“If you’re gonna keep us just to turn us in for cash we don’t want your hospitality!” Tubbo shouted. “We know he’s a wanted man! We won’t turn him in.”
“A pirate’s life is no place for a Lordling,” the lady says.
“It’s been two years and I’m still alive!”
She turned to Tommy, “Why’s you call yourself Soot?”
“Aren’t we all entitling to our reasons?”
The lady sighed deeply. She brought her gun back over the banister. “We’ll find out your secrets young man!”
“It’s been two years and I’m still alive!” Tommy parroted.
“Do you boys have any helpful skills?”
“Steady hands!” Tubbo said. “I can tie a good knot.”
“I’m a good shot!”
The lady took them in once more. “I’ll go speak to the Captain for you boys. I’m Niki.”
“Hi Niki!”
“I’ll throw you a rope. Stay close.”
“Yes Ma’am!” Tubbo grabbed the rope when it fell to their level. “Thank you Ma’am!” He dragged Tommy back into his seat. “Why did you call yourself Soot?” Tubbo scolded.
“Like I was going to tell a pirate that I’m Tommy Blade,” he scoffed.
“So you decided to say Soot?”
“What was a supposed to do? Say I’m an orphan with no last name?”
“Yes!”
“Then what the fuck am I doing with a protective arm over Lordling Tubbo Underscore?”
Tubbo finished tying the knot and glared at him. “But you literally did that! You just gave yourself a fake last name.”
“Look I just said the first thing that come to mind.”
“So you admit to not thinking?”
“Look.” Tommy put his hand on Tubbo’s shoulder. “That name will get us something okay? And it’s not a lie. Wilbur was calling me his little brother. It’s fine. We’ll have his good word when we find him again.”
“Or this other pirate Captain isn’t going to want an enemy on their ship!”
“Captives are kept safe,” Tommy countered.
“Yeah but I’m Tubbo Underscore, we were gonna get held captive anyways.”
“Oh yeah, why didn’t you bother lying about that?”
“My face is plastered on missing posters all over the country. Wilbur recognized me instantly. There’s no point.” Tubbo sat back in his seat while the vessel they were tethered to started moving. “I don’t know how you get away with it. Your brother is far more famous among men then mine it liked by his favourite supporters.”
“Techno kept me hidden Tubbo. No one even knows I exist. I grew up in your estate. Remember?”
“Yep. That over there is just Tommy innit?” Tubbo nudged his shoulder jokinhly.”Nothing special about him. He’s just working with the guards.”
“Oi shut up!”
“What’s Techno gonna think when he finds out you took a pirate’s last name?”
“Ugh. I’ll deal with that later.”
“Young Lord Underscore!” Niki yelled down.
“If you’re going to call me that please call me Lordling,” Tubbo yelled. “Also please don’t call me that!”
“The Captain is letting you and your friend aboard. We’re sending down a net. Climb in.”
Tommy and Tubbo scrambled into the net. They held on tight as they were hoisted up onto the deck. Tommy jumped up first, and he held out an arm to help Tubbo up.
“This way.”
They then followed Niki to the captain’s room at the stern.
The door opened.
“Captain Puffy.” Niki gestured to the lady with the long rainbow hair in the middle of the room. “Lordling Tubbo Underscore.” Niki winked at Tubbo. “And his friend who calls himself Tommy Soot.” Niki turned to face Captain Puffy directly, “Let us hope Captain Soot can back the claim young man.”
“He can’t,” Tommy admitted. “But he’ll vouch that he knows me.” Tommy looked to the side. “If he made it out of the attack alive,” he muttered.
“Attack?” Captain Puffy asked.
“The ship was attacked. Wilbur sent Tubbo and I on our way.”
Captain Puffy and Niki shared a troubled look.
“Where is he?”
“Don’t know,” Tommy said. “We’ve only been on the sea alone since yesterday afternoon.”
“Was he hurt?”
“He didn’t have a bullet wound when we left.”
Captain Puffy stepped away from her desk and into Tommy’s space. “You called yourself Soot?”
“Yeah.”
“You referred to Captain Soot as Wilbur.”
“Yeah.”
Captain Puffy turned to Tubbo. “Did you do the same?”
“Yes Ma’am. I called him Wilbur.”
“Your friend’s name isn’t Soot is it?”
“No Ma’am.”
“What is it?”
“No Ma’am.”
“No?”
“No.”
“Did you meet him before or after leaving your estate?”
“He grew up on the estate with me.”
“With you?”
“Yes Ma’am.”
Captain Puffy turned back to Tommy. “So you admit that Soot it’s your name.”
“Yeah.”
“Then why did you say your name was Tommy Soot to Niki?”
Tommy looked back to Captain Puffy. “Got us on the ship didn’t it? I mean it was probably Tubbo’s name, but it worked.”
Captain Puffy and Niki shared another look. “Are you boys okay sharing a cot?”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“We’ll be fine.”
“You each get half rations before you prove yourselves. If you do, you’ll get full rations and a place on this ship if you want it. If you don’t, you’ll stay with half rations and we’ll drop out off at port.”
“Thank you Ma’am.”
“We won’t let you down Captain Puffy.”

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 11: Telephone
Tangentially related because communication.
I mention a character named Meri, that’s the name of LDShadowLady’s IRL dog, for the purposes of this storyline, Meri is her child.
If anyone wants to be part of a taglist of this Vigilante AU, feel free to message me/send an ask/or mention it in reblogs.
--------------------------
5up finished up his last class of the day. He dropped his school things off in his bedroom. He grabbed his bright pink leather jacket faded from use and changed from dress pants into a worn pair of black jeans. The white masquerade mask with a leaf motif was taken from its place in the back of his closet and slipped it in the inner pocket of his jacket.
5up’s father may hate vigilantes with a passion, but the guy in charge of the security for their apartment was a fan. 5up’s father thought that vigilantes were a danger to society and that people just trust the system rather than some self-proclaimed public service helper. Another fact was that 5up’s father was too rich for crime against him to be worth it, and when things did happen to him, he could call up Hero HQ and let his reputation carry the weight necessary to get a hero rather quickly. But the people in the ground didn’t have that luxury, so even though 5up’s father asked for a report on what his son does, the security guys doesn’t only fail to mention the whole vigilante thing, he also loops the camera feed in case the man comes to take a look for himself.
5up chuckled sardonically. Who was he kidding? His father wouldn’t call Hero HQ; he goes to a kidnapped child ring to bet on the outcomes once a week.
5up decided that he should go get Elaina and DK on board first. xChocobars might need a little more time to process before agreeing.
5up dashed down the City sewer system. He threw down his skateboard and rolled through the tunnels to District 87. It was surprising how it was faster to get from his apartment complex in District 67 to the Sweet Shoppe and Bakery in District 87 by skateboarding through the sewers than catching the city bus.
5up rolled the skateboard to a stop below the grate in the back alley of the Sweet Shoppe & Bakery. 5up took the guitar strap out of his jacket pocket and attached it to the skateboard then tossed it over his shoulder. He climbed up the ladder and popped up in the back alley.
It was surprising that the stench from the sewers didn’t permeate into his clothing.
He slipped around and walked in the front door. “I’m back Niki and I’d like to buy a dozen cupcakes.”
“Hello 5up, and what brings you back down here?” She knew 5up’s order; he just wanted a random selection.
“I need to have a chat with Elaina Exe.”
“Elaina? Not Eret?” Niki asked conversationally.
5up shrugged. “You know how it is sometimes. Would you have an idea where she is right now?”
“She works at The Golden Bloom after school. This’ll be $27.”
“Thanks.” 5up pays in cash. “Where is that?”
“Just outside, turn left, cross three times, turn right, cross twice more, turn right and it’s the shop on the corner.”
“Thanks.”
5up opens the box and eats a cupcake as he follows Niki’s directions to The Golden Bloom.
- - -
Elaina is helping a customer in the succulent section of The Garden Bloom when the wind chimes over the door ring. She glances to the newcomer out of the corner of her eye; 5up. She smiles a little strained at the customer, and starts to speed up the process.
5up raises a hand in greeting and starts to skim the yellow flower section.
Elaina gets her other costumer paid and out the door. She walks over to 5up. “Alstroemeria,” she says approvingly.
“And in English?”
“Lily of the Incas.”
“Nice. Will they work as friendship flowers?”
“So you wanted friendship?” Elaina jokes. “I was going to ask if you had your eye on someone.”
“No. Just need to soften the blow of information.”
“Oh?”
“Stuff. Will we be eavesdropped on here?”
“No.”
5up nodded. “Could I have some of these?” He took out a cupcake and offered it to Elaina.
She snatched it. “Lemme finish this first. What did you want to talk about?”
“I was wondering if there were any children that had gone missing within the last couple of months.”
Elaina’s hands paused in the flowers. “Why?” Her head dropped forward and she laughed. “That sounded defensive.”
“No no don’t worry about it. Hafu found something and I was wondering how wide spread the problem was.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. One of those situations.”
Elaina’s hands found their movement and she sifted to find the best flowers and pulled them out. “A dozen?”
“Yes please.”
“Lizzie’s daughter Meri went missing three months ago. But that’s all I’ve heard.”
“So yes?”
“Yeah.” Elaina beckoned him over to the counter. “Why?”
“I might know where she is.”
“Really? Where?”
“Hafu found a child fighting ring in her patrol section. My father invited me to it, saw someone who’d gone missing seven months back.”
“Child fighting ring?”
“Illegal. Obviously. It’s a betting thing.”
“Have I ever told you that your father is a bad person?”
“Not you specifically, but I have been told that.”
“Good. Don’t be like him.”
“I won’t. That doesn’t sound fun.”
“No.” Elaina shook her head and laughed. “$25.” She wrapped the bundle in paper while 5up fished out the cash. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
“Would you be willing to come to Hafu’s tomorrow at 9pm to advice us on how to proceed?”
“Me? Me? You don’t want Eret for that? Illegal children fighting ring of kidnapped kids sounds like an Eret thing.”
“It also sounds like a file report to Hero HQ.”
“Uhm…. Yeah?”
“Hafu and I estimated 200 children, you remember the School Exploder.”
Elaina smiled fondly. “I had a test postponed because of that.”
“Exe.”
“Right right. Yeah. Hero HQ isn’t going to be quick or efficient enough.”
“They would be, but more than one hero is gonna need to work together,” 5up trailed off.
“If there were a hundred then we could trust SBI to do it,” Elaina continued his thought process. “But there are too many kids for just of three of them.”
“And we don’t know how many criminals there are to round up.”
Elaina dropped her head in her hands. “So I’m the second best option.”
“Don’t say it like that.”
“Captain Sparklez hero knowledge would be invaluable, but Eret is a little too close for this project.”
5up nodded sagely, finally picking up his flowers. “Hafu’s, 9pm tomorror?”
“I’ll be there.”
The door chimed.
“One second.” She turned back to 5up. “I’ll see you around.”
“Wait until we have a game plan before you tell Eret.”
“Yeah. Yeah.”
- - -
5up was rolling down the sewers to DK’s Dojo up in District 37; he had his mask donned; cupcake box in one hand; and flowers for xChocobars in the other.
It was really nice that DK had an elevator directly to the sewers, it was so nice not having to climb up a ladder with all the stuff he had to carry.
5up drifted from the elevator to the front desk. “Hi, is Dakotaz in?”
The receptionist didn’t look up from their screen. “No.”
5up placed a cupcake on the counted. “Ahem.”
The receptionist looked up.
“And what about for me?”
They noticed the jacket and white leaf mask and started apologizing,. “I’m so sorry 5up, I thought you were literally anyone else. Yeah. DK’s sparing with Dumbdog in his private room.”
“No worries. Thanks.”
5up swiveled his board around and propelled himself to the back room.
“Cupcakes!”
“Well if it isn’t Mr. Rich Boy.”
“Cupcakes?”Dumbdog took DK out of the headlock and leaped over. “Yes. Oh my goodness. The Sweet Shoppe and Bakery makes the best cupcakes.”
“Geez Dog, have some class.” DK picks himself off the ground. “Yo bro? Can I have one?”
5up handed one of DumbDog and held out another for DK. “Are you busy tomorrow?”
“No why?”
“Think you have time to stop by Hafu’s at 9pm tomorrow to discuss something?”
“Yeah sure. What’s up?”
“We found some missing children and need a munitions expert.”
DumbDog raised his cupcake in toast to DK. “Do you need me?”
5up turned it over in his head. “If you’re available.”
- - -
xChocobars was sitting on the roof of a building keeping watch of the streets below. There was a meeting between the City’s two biggest gangs. They always met up in this square of District 66.
She saw other vigilantes of the roof around the square and a little ways down the road where the cars were sitting. Someone dropped next to her. “Cupcake.”
“Of course.”
The leaders shook hands and headed their separate ways. xChocobars kept watch as the gang members and other vigilantes disappeared into the shadows back to their home districts. “Hello 5up.” Flowers were thrust into her hands. “Oh?”
“I found your twin sister.”
xChocobars eyes hardened behind her mask. “Oh?”
“We can’t go in guns blazing though.”
She gestured to the flowers. “I figured.”
“She’s ‘fine.’ Not really.”
“Oh?”
“Let’s just say that there are other people who got shorter sticks.”
“Stop softening the blow.”
“Your sister’s kidnappers are forcing her to fight and people like my father bet on the outcome.”
xChocobars dropped flowers. They fell soundlessly into her lap. “Oh?”
“She was one of the less bruised and was winning.”
“Good for her,” xChocobars said. “Bad for others.”
“Bad for others,” 5up agreed. “We’re going to Hafu’s 9pm tomorrow to plan an escape.”
“Good. I’ll be there.”
“Good.”
“Go home 5up.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
- - -
“Hello Hafu.”
Hafu startled from where she was sitting on her fire escape. “Hello 5up.”
“I have six cupcakes left.”
“Oooh. Gimme.”
“So what’s the plan for tomorrow? I told people to come at 9pm.”
“We’ll talk over dinner about how to approach this.”
“Mhm. You, me, Elaina, DK, DumbDog, and xChocobars.”
“Good team. We’ll need to expand.” Hafu popped a cupcake in her mouth. “Think you can do some recon?”
“Yeah. I’m sure my father would love to spend some time with me.”

Thank you Escargot for giving me a kickstart to this prompt.
--------------------------
Tubbo sat in his bed playing piano tiles when the tin can in his room started dinging. Tubbo groaned and got up. He pulled the cord from his side of the window.
“Good morning!”
Tubbo looked at his phone. “It’s 12:01am Tommy.”
“Tomorrow starts at midnight my friend.”
“What you do want Tommy?”
“It’s Purpled’s birthday today.”
Tubbo blinked. “It’s what?”
“Purpled’s birthday.”
“No it’s not.”
“Yes it is.”
“His birthday is in like. Many months.”
“Tubbo. It’s Purpled’s Birthday.”
“Tommy. It’s not.”
“Tubbo we are going to throw Purpled a surprise party.”
“Tommy he would not enjoy that even if it was on his birthday.”
“Tubbo that’s why we do it today.”
“So we don’t ruin his birthday?”
“Yes. We let him to what he wants to do on his birthday.”
“But because we want to throw a party for him to do it today?”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
“Let’s get his older friends,” Tubbo suggested.
“Ranboo first, then we meet up at the Moo-Pop Café.”
“His shift is at 1 tomorrow right?”
“Today. Tomorrow starts at midnight Tubbo.”
“Right sorry.” Tubbo paused. “We go get Ranboo?”
“Meet you outside.”
- - -
“Tap tap taping on the glass.”
The window abruptly opened, showing Tubbo a disgruntled Ranboo. “What?”
“Good morning!”
“You are too perky for this.”
“Guess what we’re doing today!”
“Dragging Purpled down with me,” Ranboo muttered. “Forcing chickens to cross the road,” he guessed, “burning down a building?”
“No, no, and no.”
Ranboo peered at Tubbo. “What do you mean ‘no, no, and no?’ I only guessed two things.”
Tubbo smiled widely. “Purpled.”
“What do you mean Purpled?” Ranboo looked out his window to see Tommy lying in the grass. “You mean we aren’t going to harass Purpled? You mean I’m alone with you two at 12:18 in the middle of the night?”
“No.”
“Tubbo.” He looked back to the boy on his roof. “You know I love you guys but please.”
“We’re harassing Purpled. Don’t worry.”
Ranboo was not comforted.
“Come on get up. We’ll meet you outside.”
“Tubbo.”
“Come on Ranboo, it’ll be fine.”
“Tubbo!”
He jumped down into Ranboo’s yard. “Come on Big Man! We gotta start soon!”
Ranboo came stumbling out of his house. He put on his jacket as he walked to his friend. “What are we doing then?”
“Throwing a surprise party for Purpled.”
Ranboo gave Tommy a look. “Purpled’s birthday is in October.”
“I know.”
He just shook his head. “Great. What’s first?”
“Bothering all of Purpled’s friends for help. We want a good proper party.”
Ranboo dropped his head in his hands. “Seriously? Where is this party happening?”
“Sammy Green has the morning shift at the Moo-Pop Café. He should have the keys.”
“Oh no. What about the owner? Does he care?”
“Scar. You’re asking if Scar cares about throwing a surprise birthday party.”
Ranboo finger guns at Tubbo. “Right. Stupid question.”
Tommy procured two sticky notes from his pocket and, with an unnecessary flourish, gave one to each of his friends.
“Here are the addresses of Purpled’s other friends.”
“Oh.”
“That’s nice.”
“How did you even get these,” Ranboo asked.
Tommy smiled much the same way Tubbo had earlier. “Would you believe me if I said I went through the phone book?”
“No.” Ranboo looked down at his list: TapL, Wallibear, Rachxo. “But I’m going to pretend I do for my own sanity.”
“Good.”
“Well, I’m off to wake up Hannah, Astelic, and David.” Tubbo did a half-bow. “I’ll meet you boys at the Moo-Pop Café.”
“Later Tubzo!” And with that Tommy was off.
“And I didn’t even get a goodbye.” Ranboo turned to where Tubbo was just at his left. “Ah. Well. Time to wake people up for TommyInnit at 1 in the morning. Great.”
- - -
“Sammy. Sammy. Sammy.”
Sammy batted an arm at Tommy. “If I ignore you for long enough will you leave?”
“Nope.”
Sammy groaned and rolled over in his bed. “How did you get in here?”
“Spare key under the doormat.”
“That’s nice.” Sammy sat up and rubbed his eyes. “This what you do to Purp?”
“Yep.”
“Why me?” Sammy asked. “Is Purp even here?”
“Nope. I need your key to the Moo-Pop Café.”
Sammy stared at Tommy, unlike his regular friend group he doesn’t know to not ask questions. “Why?”
“Because I need it.”
“You’re already in my house. Did you need to wake me up?” Sammy looked at the electric clock on his side table. “At 1am? Seriously? Couldn’t you have just stolen it?”
“Pretty sure there’s an alarm code that I need. Also, someone has to work.”
Sammy flopped back down into bed. “No.”
“It’s for Purpled’s surprise birthday party.”
“It’s not his birthday.”
“Should I come back then?”
Sammy shot out of bed. “Nope. Bad idea. Get out of my house I’ll be down in a minute.”
“You have five!” Tommy slid the window open and jumped down to the grass.
“Didn’t you come in through the front door?” Sammy asked, meeting Tommy outside. “Why did you go out the window?”
“It’s more fun.”
“Jesus.”
“Off to wake up Gamer Boy!”
“Oh you’re actually going to wake everybody up for this. Great.”
Tommy smiled. “Now you’ll know what Purpled’s talking about when he tell you about these earlier morning wake up calls!”
Sammy gave Tommy and unamused glare.
- - -
Purpled walked into the front door of the Moo-Pop Café, ready for an afternoon of work.
“ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß”
Purpled walked back outside. He took a breath. And he walked back in.
“ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß”
Literally all his friends were in the dining room of the Moo-Pop Café. There was a ‘Happy Birthday’ banner hanging in the room. There were streamers and balloons. And all of his friends were still blowing kazoos at him.
TapL and Squid were manning the counter for the actual customers.
Sammy, David, and Walli were icing cupcakes.
Rachxo, Hannah, and Astelic were sharing a giant stack of ice cream
Gamer Boy was asleep on the floor.
Eryn, Freddie, Jack Manifold, Drista, and Lani were playing Uno.
Tubbo was talking pictures of everybody; probably for his scrapbook. Maybe Purpled flipped him off during the picture, but he was a good sport and smiled.
Ranboo just looked really apologetic.
Tommy had the biggest most proud smile on his face. “Happy Birthday!”
“Thanks!” Purpled threw his jacket at him. “You know it’s not my birthday right?”
“Absolutely! Let’s celebrate!”
“Yay.”

“Tommy.”
Tommy grinned wide. “Yes Purpled.”
“I hope you know how much it pains me to ask.”
“I know.”
“Why is my roof covered in kayaks?”
“No reason.”
“Tommy.”
“I hope you know I am no longer having a good day.”
“Only now? I’d have thought your day was ruined when you saw my down the street.”
“Tommy.”
“Yes?”
“Give yourself some credit man. You’re still my friend. I don’t immediately start hating my life whenever I see you.”
“Could have fooled me.”
“Don’t be cynical.” Purpled patted Tommy on the head. “I enjoy your company. Maybe not at 4am. But by 4:!5am I start to like spending time with you.”
Tommy smiled.

Doodlewash April 2021 prompt 5: Buttercup
This is going to part of a Vigilante AU I’m creating. I will elaborate on world building and other plot points at a later date. Kinda like that pirate things from a few days ago.
BTW: Sally and Wilbur aren’t a thing and were never a thing in the canon of this world. But Sally is still Fundy’s mom.
--------------------------
The City was separated into 100 districts; the lower the district number, the poorer and the less likely heroes were to be casually patrolling the streets. And the more likely vigilantes would be about helping the people.
- - -
Tommy was born to loving parents in City District 93. Tommy’s parents worked in the mill, making books for schools that they couldn’t afford to send their son to – you know, the fancy ones; Tommy did still go to tax payer schooling.
When Tommy was eight his parents died in an explosion at the mill while he was at school. When Tommy was eight his parents landlord gave him a month to figure out lodging. When Tommy was eight the landlord let Tommy say in an unheated, unairconditioned apartment with no water and no running electricity until they found a new tenant. When Tommy was eight he moved out onto the street. When Tommy was eight he started stealing to survive. When Tommy was eight Ranboo and his parents quietly told the school board that Tommy had moved into their house even though the kid had declined the offer, because he wouldn’t be allowed to attend without guardians or a permanent address.
Tommy didn’t limit himself to District 93, but he did stay in the lower 20. His parents’ landlord had let him stay two months without rent, and Tommy had spent that time under a roof scouting out places he could rest the night, and places he could use to help him survive. He spend that time saving up and learning to pick pocket properly – because what kid in District 93 didn’t have some basic knowledge on that skill.
It wasn’t until he was already on the street that he found a nice little bakery in District 87. The bakery was really nice, like really nice, like it was from District 41 or something. But here it was, right in the middle of District 87. Tommy would look longingly inside. He had never had fresh pastries – slates from the day before were always cheaper.
Tommy noticed his brown haired kid noticing him. He tried the shrug the boy’s presence off, but it was hard. The kid would always walk in and buy a cupcake. Tommy thinks at least – there was an advertisement for a cupcake that looked like the thing the boy left the bakery with everyday – he’s pretty sure.
On day nine, the boy brought out two cupcake-things. He held one out to Tommy. “Hi! I’m Tubbo! Wanna be my friend?”
Tommy stared at him in bewilderment. He looked between the clean clothes ‘Tubbo’ had on and his rags. He cautiously look the cupcake. “This good?”
“The best.” Tubbo took a bite and smiled once he finished chrewing.
Tommy shrugged. Food was food. He took a bite. If he could get this every day: Tubbo was for sure his new best friend.
So Tommy’s days went as follows: wake up; go to school with Ranboo;  eat the half lunch Ranboo’s parents made for him; continue being bored in school; steal; have a cupcake with Tubbo; steal; eat something; go back to bed. There was other stuff in between, and times fluctuated, but that was Tommy’s life. It was sometimes hard managing the need to steal to survive and wanting the spend another fifteen minutes being a kid with Tubbo, but he pushed thought it. That was his life for a few months.
One day after post-Tubbo-evening-stealing, he walked by the bakery and saw that it was closing. Tommy knocked on the door.
“Oh I’m so sorry, but we’re closing right now,” the lady behind the counter said once she opened the door.
“I have money.” Tommy held out some cash. “Do you have any leftovers that didn’t get sold?”
She looked him up and down. Tommy bristled, knowing how he looked. “How’d you get the money?”
“Some dude gave me a couple bucks.” Not a lie – ish.
He looked at his obviously hungry form. “I’ll give it to you half price. Is there anything specific you’d like?”
“Bread.”
“Just bread?”
Tommy thought about it. “If I can afford it I’d like two cupcakes please, any flavour will do.”
The lady nodded and took his offered six dollars. She came back with a bag, it in was an unsold baguette and a Tupperware with four cupcakes. “You could really only afford the bread and one cupcake at half price. Keep the rest for free.”
“Thank you Ma’am!”
Tommy scurried off. He really only wanted two cupcakes so he could share with Ranboo at lunch, but now he could also repay his parents for the continuous food.
- - -
Tommy skipped into school the next morning; a pep in his step.
“What are you happy about today?”
“I have a surprise for you Ranboo.”
“Oh?”
“It’s a good one.”
When they got to lunch, and Ranboo gave Tommy his half a meal, Tommy pulled out the Tupperware.
“Did you bring your own food?”
“Nope.” Tommy popped the P as he brought the apple slices and carrots closer to him. “I wanted to thank you can your parents are giving me lunch.”
“Are you okay?”
“What?”
“What did you do to Tommy?”
Tommy laughed at Ranboo’s obvious distress. “Here.” He lifted the lid. “It’s a cupcake from the Sweet Shoppe and Bakery from District 87. I got ‘em at half price at the end of the day. The lady even took pity on me and gave me some for free.”
“Tommy? Accepting pity? Like actual pity? And not just your friend’s family doing something nice for you?”
Tommy lightly punched Ranboo for the jab. “Pity is fine when it’s for you.” Tommy grabbed the most smushed cupcake. “Try one. If you like ‘em enough than he don’t save them for your parents.”
Ranboo laughed. He reached for a cupcake. “You wouldn’t poison me would you?”
“Never.”
“Never.”
That was the day both Tommy and Ranboo were called into the office to be told that Ranboo’s parents had passed in an explosion at the steel manufacturers. That was the day Ranboo dragged Tommy to his apartment, and Tommy went with no complaint for the first time since his parents had died. That was the day Ranboo packed a single bag and took the potted buttercups. That was the day Ranboo moved in with Tommy at the crappy little alleyway-canopy-shelter he had created for himself. That was the day they both got on a bus and walked into a posh apartment complex in District 5 and demanded to see Sally – Ranboo’s aunt.
Tommy and Ranboo ate the other two cupcakes on the bus ride.
They were nice about it, but they told her that in order to keep going to school they needed a house and a guardian – at least on paper. They also make sure she knew that ‘they’ meant ‘Ranboo.’ One look from her nephew and Sally knew that Tommy needed it as well. Ranboo and Tommy were adamant about staying in District 93, it was all they knew.
Within a week Sally came down and bought them a nicer apartment, she figured that Tommy definitely would not want the best the District had to offer, and she signed their paper work. She made them promise that if things ever got super dire they would call.
Ranboo promised.
Tommy did not.
When Tommy and Ranboo were nine, they started living on their own in a nice apartment that they wouldn’t ever need to pay for. That fact didn’t stop Tommy from continuing the steal. Just because lodgment was paid for didn’t mean that they had food money.
Ranboo went the more sane approach and got an afternoon job.
Tommy had started buying two half priced cupcakes on his way home every night. He learned that the Sweet Shoppe and Bakery Lady was named Niki. That was cool.
One night, on the walk from District 87 to 93 when Tommy was ten he was kidnapped. Stolen off the steal without even a scream.
Ranboo didn’t wait up. Sometimes Tommy stayed over at his friend Tubbo’s. The kid Ranboo never had time to meet, but that Tommy promised – when he was being soft and nice and genuine – he would get on really well. But then Tommy wasn’t at school the next day
Or the next week.
Or the next month.
And at that point it was too late to call aunt Sally and not get a lecture about asking for help sooner. Ranboo knew that her son Fundy was in Hero Training and the fieldwork would probably be good for him. But 93 had its vigilantes, they wouldn’t want a hero-in-training patrolling. They barely tolerated normal heroes. No. Fundy didn’t need the confidence debuff that would give.
Not that Hero HQ would send in a trainee to District 93. For a single missing ten year old. Then again, aunt Sally was high profile. But he couldn’t call.
He’d just take care of his buttercups until Tommy banged through that door safe and sound.
He didn’t account for how long that would take.
