ive been wracking my brain over something. knowing full well Israel is responsible for genocide. knowing full well its system is an apartheid. knowing full well the reasons that have justified both the 1940s English zionist occupation, the First Intifada and so on. knowing full well if Israel were to end, its problems would stop existing.

Why do I still feel bad by accepting violent protest and defense against a physical risk of violence and of ethnic cleansing as a legitimate mean of changing things? why does part of me, alongside "polite society", still dare criticise Palestinians that chose to side with paramiritary political parties and organizations to protect themselves from harm? why do I still entertain the possibility that everything would have been "fine" had not Hamas attacked or something, as if a peace built on injustice was still a peace and not a strongly enforced status quo, where people would technically still be dying under, as Gaza was reduced to an actual concentration camp ever since?

i have made my choice by standing with Palestine against what's essentially a criminal post-colonial organization disguised as a legitimate government. but even then. how would we work after the dissolution of Israel. how would we integrate

Wow, hi. I honestly didn't remember I enabled asks at some point, this is the first one ever. Thank you. I dunno if I'm able to give a good answer tho, I'm just one person who's following this from afar, feeling powerless. I am in no way an authority on any of this, I am not Palestinian, and I strongly recommend following Palestinian users here on tumblr for an insight from people who are directly affected by this.

But I have been thinking about the thought processes you describe, and the many people who seem to really believe, that if Hamas hadn't attacked on October 7., everything would be fine. And I think a lot of it (for the non-zionists who aren't reveling in the slaughter israel is doing) has to do with just... the fear of change.

The status quo is what we know. It might be horrible and deadly, but it's familiar. There's a sense of safety in knowing how things are, and I think it's a very human impulse to just resist change. After all, for all you know the change could make everything worse. And I think the fear of change is more powerful the more privilege we have. People who aren't in the oppressed group rarely even see the oppression others are dealing with every day, and bringing it out and talking about it, feels like "rocking the boat". Everything was just okay before, wasn't it? Why make such a big deal of it? I personally don't suffer, so let it go.

On the topic of Palestine, however, I think there is also the fact that before October, people had lulled themselves into an illusion of stability. Something like "the Palestinians have accepted their fate and so, we should let it go" (and this was never the case, mind you, israel and its allies have just been very efficient in keeping things from us). This is of course exactly what israel wants: That the Palestinians just accept their fate under israeli oppression and stop resisting. And that's why the attack was such a shock for them. Realising that no, the people they had oppressed and tortured and raped and kidnapped and stolen from still didn't just submit to them. They dare resist and remind the people in the West that they still exist, they haven't been beaten into submission.

And this is, of course, what it will always be like, until the oppression stops.

I, personally, feel like the only really proper solution would be one Palestinian state, in which Palestinians and (former) Israelis would live on equal terms. I also believe this is entirely possible, based on the things I've read and heard about the time before the zionist project, and the experiences of people in, for example, South Africa, where the white people believed they would be attacked if apartheid was abolished... and they weren't. And before anyone who reads this tells me I'm talking Hamas propaganda or some shit like that: No, these thoughts come from Ilan Pappe (israeli), several Palestinians themselves, anti-zionist israelis and Jews across the world, and historical records.

I sincerely do believe liberty and equality are possible and worth fighting for. It is painful, for all parts involved, in different ways, but it's the only way to go if we want real safety. I think this is true for every society here on earth.

I don't remember when I began to understand everything I--a culturally Christian white kid from Indiana who went to a Baptist church with a "Stand By Israel" sign but told us we weren't allowed to date Jews--knew about Israel was wrong. It probably wasn't one single "aha!" moment, tho it was prolly cemented by the raid on the Freedom Flotilla and executions of ten of its members. I remember I had an Israeli friend on an old poetry forum, and when I asked her about the raid from an Israeli perspective she said she was glad to answer because she was tired of Israel being demonized in the media and the "invaders" deserved it all. We stopped being friends after that. We were both seventeen-ish.

Anyway, what I do remember is having been concerned about the Darfur genocide (ongoing for twenty years now with a couple years of tentative pause until recently) since like two thousand and five, two years after it started, after Nick News with Linda Ellerbee did a story on it when I was in middle school. I was twelve-ish, and for many many years I tried to be an activist from thereon in. I wasn't a very good activist since I was just a kid, and one who was too sickly to stage meaningful protest anyway (I tried many times, but couldn't keep it up).

But I was always keeping tabs on what was going on in Sudan, and at some point it was reported on that Darfur refugees where headed to Israel for asylum. I remember reading this and naively thinking "Yes! Smart! Head to Israel, they'll understand!" only to read on and see they were being denied entry and even being deported back to Sudan. Out of the thousands of Darfuri who made their way to Israel, as twenty-fifteen only 4-ish (it's unclear from this headline how many of this 4 were Sudanese and who were Eritrean, the full article is behind a paywall) were granted asylum. And in September of this year, a month before this current war in Gaza, netanyahu ordered a plan for all African "migrants" in Israel to be deported, including those who fled violence and genocide, against international law that says you cannot deport someone back to a situation where their life may be at risk.

Anyway I'm having a hard time finding articles from the actual time Darfuri refugees made their way to Israel because it was over a decade ago and I don't remember the specific year it was first reported on. But here's an article from The Forward from September twenty twenty-three talking about how in twenty years of the Darfur genocide, Israeli concern for their plight has turned into general apathy.

Anyway, to end a depressing ramble, that had to have been the first inkling that Israel wasn't the bastion of peace, democracy, and compassion that "the Middle East lacked" like I had always been told, even by my liberal family members. The assault on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla just cemented it, I think, and the blockade on Gaza that the flotilla was in response to made me read into Palestine more and realize why an antisemitic baptist church had a "stand by Israel" sign.

(Also, all eyes on Sudan too, because the Darfur people are under genocide still and again.)

i personally don’t care what influencers or celebrities say about any social or political issue most of them are dumb and don’t know what they’re talking about, but tbh i understand where people who want them to speak up are coming from obviously no one is expecting influencers or celebrities to actually go fight in the war and stop it lol it’s about spreading the word using their influence to spread information about what’s happening most of us don’t watch the news but we watch YT and insta stories and tiktoks etc they have an insane amount of influence that’s why brands pay them thousands and thousands of dollars (millions if they’re celebrities) just to talk about their products for 3 seconds lmao and people want them to use that influence for something good for once instead of always selling us shit we don’t need. remember when Taylor Swift influenced 2 million people to go vote just because she posted one insta story! so asking them to speak up about important issues can lead to positive outcomes because of their huge influence on society, i personally don’t care but i completely understand why people want them to speak about it, it’s really not that crazy

respectfully, that's the problem tho. idk how old you are, so i don't want to come across rude or anything. but a random entertainer's job is not to inform you on the news going on around the world. do your own research. sure, snc talking about palestine would bring *maybe* a couple more eyes to it. but you would also have to be living under a rock to not know what's happening in gaza. you would have to be purposefully ignoring what's happening over there to not know what's going on.

not to mention, but it's not even the only genocide taking place rn. but it's the only one fans are demanding they speak on.

and i don't expect anyone to use their voice. if you can, you should. but as for content creators, idc what they have to say on international news. snc aren't political commentators. if they were, then i would get telling them to talk about palestine. but they aren't. and it's not even about smarts. most ppl, educated or not, can understand a genocide is a bad thing. but again, no one should rely on content creators for news.

and actual celebrities are a lot different than content creators. taylor swift is known globally which is why her word matters. she reaches ears that snc couldn't reach in their wildest dreams. that's why her saying something matters to some extent. but even then, if ppl don't want to speak on a topic, they don't have to.

i get to some degree why fans want snc to say something, but i think the issue i have is that this is SUCH a chronically online take. who the fuck is requesting snc say something? twitter fans???? the same ones that bitch every other day about snc's gfs. rrrriiiiiiigggghhhhhttt. respectfully to them, idgaf what they have to say on anything, but especially world news.
