I’m really curious what experienced people on dogblr think of this video. This video shows the neighbors rescue bully-mix getting away from their owner. I think they had just come home in their car with their two dogs. It’s slippery outside and the dog gets away from them. Accidents happen and the owner was enthusiastic in retrieving their loose dog which is always appreciated. The thing that has me a little confused is the dogs behavior and how determined they are to get into my yard.
For context, Mandana has some excitement reactivity with dogs. It’s something we prioritize especially since moving into a house with dogs on three sides of our yard. She’s gotten so much better. They bark at her through the fence while we practice ignoring them. She’s made so much progress that most of the neighbor dogs are recovering faster from their barking because she’s not reacting to them.
So here’s the thing. The bully-mix is the main barker and when we first moved in they got into a spat through the wooden fence but besides that their barking has always sounded like typical barrier barking and sniffing (as opposed to our other neighbors whose Mastiff and Bully-mix actively try to attack her) so I was a little surprised to see how determined this dog was to get into our yard while we weren’t even outside. I would expect to see this intensity if Mandana was outside but even without any dogs in the yard (and a short chainlink fence that’s easy to see through) the bully-mix was seeking a way in and checked both sides of our house to try to get in. (Also, they moved into the house around the same time we did so their dog doesn’t have a history of fighting with previous dogs on our property)
I’m from the country and I’ve only personally seen this kind of behavior in dogs who are 1) actively trying to get in a pen to kill livestock or 2) dogs crossing property lines to attack dogs on their own property. I have also seen excitement and pulling towards dogs who are playing in a communal dog yard and barrier aggression related to that.
I don’t want to jump to the obvious conclusion so I’m asking Dogblr: Was this a case of a curious dog trying to see what the neighbor dogs are doing or was this a dog on a mission to attack? I go through life expecting loose dogs to charge us at any give time but there is a big difference in catching a loose dog who’s coming to see what’s up and stopping an aggressive “out-to-kill” dog attack.

So the lead trainer just asked me to take on another new class because the other new trainer decided to withdraw from working at the training center. But they had already begun sign ups for a Tricks class so the lead trainer asked me to assume that class if possible. It is possible so I now have a Tricks class to teach.
I also had to write up a curriculum because the person who left didn't leave the curriculum so we needed a brand new one. So I have made a Tricks class curriculum today and sent that draft in for approval.
I picked twelve tricks over six sessions, all of which are safe for dogs whose growth plates haven't closed and don't require much conditioning to perform. I also made sure the tricks aren't size-restricted (as no one wants to teach a Leonberger to do a kickjump off their leg...) so that I can keep the class open to most dogs. Also the tricks won't require the handler to be able-bodied or physically strong either so I hope that will open it up to a wider variety of people too. (Aka nothing like having a dog jump into your arms or weave through your legs.) So hopefully this will be a fun and really accessible class.

Unless: You want the action to repeat itself because it's super cute and there is nothing inherently wrong with rewarding contact-seeking behaviour, and shockingly it is actually possible to both teach and learn more nuanced ways to communicate with your dog than simply "no" and "when i say so"

I drew Ahti II's pet pike!! Her name is Kultakutri (Goldilocks) and she's a Golden Royal domestic pike, a breed that has been specifically bred to appear as light and yellow as possible.
Tumblr media
Ahti II raised her from an egg and she’s about ten years old now — doesn’t mean she’s not Baby anymore, though.

Off-Leash Dog Hot Take?
In general, I’m against having dogs off-leash in public areas. This is especially true in areas such as neighborhoods and parks where you can expect traffic, kids and on-leash dogs. It’s illegal, incredibly inconsiderate of other people and almost always an unsafe situation for the public and your dog. Its not the way to train a dog how to be off leash and it doesn’t make you look like a competent dog owner. It makes you look like a jackass.
But most of the time I’m not going to confront you. If your dog appears well-trained and you make an effort to keep your distance then I’m just going to stay hyper-aware of the situation and probably leave the area. My actions are very clear and both my dog & I wear signs that say we don’t want to be approached. Yelling at you from a distance would only escalate an otherwise neutral situation. I’m not going to do that.
But here’s the thing. If your dog comes towards us, I’m going to prepare myself for a dog attack. I’m going to put my dog behind me and blare my airhorn in your dogs face. I’m going to throw things at them. Kick them. Prepare to use my stun-gun on them if they get close enough. I don’t owe you anything. I don’t have to accept your dog as friendly just because you say it is and I sure as hell don’t have to be humane towards a dog that is assaulting us.
It’s not your dogs fault and I don’t want to punish them for having a stupid owner. But at the end of the day my responsibility in that situation is to keep my dog safe. I’m the only one who is going to protect my dog from physical and mental harm. I’m the only one who is going to protect them from legal accusations if something goes down between our dogs.
So if you’re the kind of person who allows your dog to run loose in public just keep this in mind:
Dogs get hit by cars all the time. A lot of them were frequently off-leash for months or years leading up to their accident. Their owners thought it was fine and that their dog was trained but it only takes one mistake to lose a leg or their life.
Dog phobias, elderly, parents with little kids, pregnant or disabled people. There are many reasons why someone would not want to have to deal with your off-leash dog and even if you have them “under control” just seeing them without a leash is enough to cause a huge amount of distress in someone.
Lots of on-leash dogs are dog aggressive or reactive. Unless legally prohibited due to their bite history, those dogs have just as much right to be in public as your dog does. That said, many of them would love nothing more than to bite the throat of your friendly pet and thrash them until they stop moving.
Service dogs exist. Just because you don’t see them in your area doesn’t mean you will never cross paths with one. Off-leash dogs are a huge liability for service dogs and their handlers. Even if it doesn’t lead to an attack just being a high level distraction to a disabled person who’s trying to go about their day is incredibly ableist.

Hey dogblr,
Maybe one of you know the thing I'm talking about if it exists. I recall reading or hearing something about the minimum length of longline needed to replicate an "off-leash" experience. Did I fever dream this or is someone else aware of what I'm thinking of? I've tried googling for this but nothing I've found is picking this up.
Many thanks in advance to all
Edit: to be clear, if this was an actual experiment done and not random bs I heard, I really want to read it to analyze said experiment etc.

It's funny when people get really really mad when you don't view slugcats as almost-people or super intelligent when almost all evidence for that kinda interpretation comes from MSC, a fan-made and non-canon extension of Rainworld people are completely free to either build off of or disregard. Like it or not MSC handles slugcats very differently from base game and people can like MSC and dislike that vibe at the same time
