I often see people quote this gorgeous passage from Six of Crows;
“He needed to tell her...what? That she was lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved. That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn't pull himself together into some semblance of a man for her. That without meaning to, he'd begun to lean on her, to look for her, to need her near. He needed to thank her for his new hat.”
However, I often see people remove the last line about the hat. Which is a shame, because I would argue that’s the most important part. Early on in the book, there’s a scene we all know where Kaz and Inej go up to his office, and he tells her about Van Eck’s offer. Before she leaves, he tells her to order him a new hat. Inej thinks about how Kaz never says “please” or “thank you.” Or at least, Dirtyhands never does. Inej comments on this, and Kaz jokingly says “Please, my darling Inej, treasure of my heart, won’t you do me the honour of acquiring me a new hat?” But she’s right. The persona that Kaz has constructed for himself doesn’t ask for favours, doesn’t beg, doesn’t thank. He gives orders to his crew, and they carry them out. He’s not going to risk anything that would make him seem weak, give others a reason to fear him less. He’s ruthless, heartless, conniving. Willing to do anything for money. Dirtyhands. Brekker. The Bastard of the Barrel. That persona is what’s been keeping him alive ever since the age of 9.
Except, Kaz Rietveld isn’t heartless at all. He does a good job of pretending, but Inej has always been the one person he can’t hide from. Throughout the duology we slowly see her break down his walls, his armour. Kaz Brekker only cares about money and himself, but Kaz Rietveld would do anything, risk anything, give up anything for Inej Ghafa. Kaz Brekker doesn’t rely on anyone, but Kaz Rietveld needs Inej to stay in Ketterdam with him, not because she’s the Wraith or because she’s good with a knife, but because he can’t bear the thought of life without her. Kaz Brekker doesn’t believe in fairy tales, but when Inej smiles and laughs it brings magic back into Kaz Rietveld’s world. Kaz Brekker thanks nobody, but time and time again Kaz Rietveld has been grateful to Inej for everything she’s done for him. For risking her life for him and the Dregs time and time again. For her loyalty and companionship. For getting him drunk on bottled laughter. For putting her trust in him, the man who should never be trusted, time and time again. For never giving up on the person she knew he really was, the person she knew he could become. For seeing him without armour. For seeing him not as a monster, but as a man (to borrow a line from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). As a boy. A boy who wanted everyone to believe that Ketterdam has beaten the softness out of him. Only she knew the truth.
He needed to thank her for his new hat.

this is going to be violently online, scroll now to save yourself
i am deeply entrenched in the cringe wars (not actually firing any bullets just watching other people do it) and one of the main counterarguments i see is "we need to kill cringe," "cringe is dead" etc. and this rubs me the wrong way a little. and i felt bad about it!! people are getting doxxed cuz they like. upload a corny song on tiktok. obviously thats bad, obviously the cringe industrial complex needs to be killed, like, the accounts that repost shit to be mocked, and people who go posting-crusade against someone who like, wore an outfit they didnt like or said something in a funny voice they didnt like.
BUT on the other hand. i dont know. i dont love the idea of painting the only virtuous path as like. being an angelic being who only experiences love towards their fellow creatures. thats simply not realistic. but i think its easier to say that then "sometimes you will see someone doing something in a public forum that causes you to feel secondhand embarrassment, and you need to contain your reaction and perhaps examine what this illuminates about your own thoughts and values, and then move on." perhaps someday you will naturally find yourself at a place where you no longer feel "cringe," which sounds wonderful. but also difficult, and the end result of a long process.
and even harder than saying that is whats on the other side, is saying "if someone thinks you are cringe, that is a problem they are having, not a reflection of your worth." because some of it really is just basic run of the mill haterism, which we all occasionally produce, and we all must learn to endure from others. its the doxxing that we need to kill, its the hair-trigger accusations of heinous crimes we need to kill. on a basic level, its the making-your-own-cringe-reaction-somebody-else's problem that needs to be killed. the slippery slope doesnt work here, i really think its two different kinds of behavior.
you will have uncharitable thoughts sometimes! because you are a human being. and i think its kind of disingenuous to ignore that.

No hate at all, but just as someone who’s worked on smaller film production crews in a less expensive city than LA I want to tell you that 29 people on staff is NOTHING for a production company of their size. There’s so much work from project planning and plan development to animation and SFX and graphic design to actual camera operators, audio techs, and lighting crews, to social media marketing teams and then administrative staff to handle all the paperwork involved in getting permission to film in all these locations and organizing flights, hotels, and car rentals for every place they travel to. 29 people is honestly a pretty low number for a company of this caliber.
i know. i just directed a short film with a production crew of 37 and post crew of 11. i am aware of the possibility that productions can be that size. my point was more that they did not need to be “a company of [that] caliber.” they very much could have left buzzfeed, hired a camera op & sound mixer or two, or shit, learned how to do it themselves since it’s youtube and that’s the norm, and more gradually expanded into a professional operation at a sustainable rate. being a "production company of their size" was not a command performance, it was a choice, and it was a bad one.
they did not need to leave buzzfeed and maintain their status as solely talent. the show they were leaving with was not all that complicated! they do not NEED to hire a fucking social media marketing team. a location manager, sure. camera ops and audio for when they're out exploring? sure! but a crew of that size isn't really necessary, is my point.
but they (and the try guys) were used to a quality of life at buzzfeed as talent that they didn't want to let go, and even when the try guys left, i was a little disappointed that they tried to maintain the same level of almost corporate professionalism about their videos instead of like, figuring out how to use a camera or an NLE themselves. i'll admit it's a super petty gripe; like, fine, whatever, shoot for the moon! but it's also meant that they keep feeling the need to Expand and, evidently, legitimize themselves as "more" than just youtubers. they make a LOT of money--but for every one person they hire, that's another person they're obligated to pay a living wage for their skills, and so if they want to be a bigger company, they necessarily must always have Line Go Up. which then compels them to do stupid shit like they did this week

Taagnus not as endgame but as meeting your high school sweetheart at the reunion and thinking about what could have been.
Like imagine them falling so completely and utterly in love during the stolen century that when they forget each other its a hole in their chests, raw and stinging when prodded so they leave it alone. Then they meet again and the hole is filled? Probably? I mean, it doesn't hurt quite so much and Magnus's heart glows when Taako makes him chicken soup and Taako's chest feels like it's full of something warm and heavy when he tucks under Magnus's arm to watch the stars but Merle...kind of makes them feel that way too so it must just be having friends for the first time in so long.
And then they remember. And it's like...you were my first love. I forgot you. But I didn't really. I loved someone else but I knew how to love them because of you. And I still love you. But...neither of us is the same person. Julia. Sazed. Raven's Roost. Glamor Springs. It's not even about the fact that Taako has Kravitz now. Its...I don't think I could love you the same way any more, even if I had the energy to try. I think too much has happened. I think too much of me has changed.
Like I just think that Magnus will never be ready to love someone like that again, after Julia. Not even Taako. And it's easier to let him be happy with Kravitz than to untangle this mess.
And I think Taako wants uncomplicated, for once in his life. I think he wants to start over, one last time, and for this time to last, instead of 100 years of wiping the slate clean every year.
And on top of all that, one of them is a human and the other is an elf!! It didn't matter when they died and came back every year, but it does now. It all matters now and--
I think they kiss. Once. I think they gain their memories back and they can't fucking help but squeeze each other tight and kiss each other like they're oxygen. I think they cling to each other, because they forgot, and now they remember and its so good to have you back, I missed you even though you were right there almost but not quite.
I think they kiss. And then they look at each other and realize that this part of their lives is behind them. I think they decide, I can love you, but not like this. I want my best friend back. I thought you'd be the only love I'd ever have but look, I found it again! It hurt to lose you,, but I found love without you. But you... I'll never have you again. So let me have you. As a friend. Different, not less.
Taagnus, not as endgame, but as a memory.

thing i find hot no 459334: necromancer relationship with casual gory death. one partner consistently gets themselves torn to shreds and fucked up beyond all belief and the other just nonchalantly resurrects them, blood seeping into veins and bones snapping back into place as theyre messily brought back

I wonder if Scott's alpha teeth made him nervous even after he got used to them just Being A Thing Now. If, when he would catch the glint of red eyes staring back at him, he had to still an instinctive flinch and try not to think of all the people who have threatened to or almost ended his life with that same vibrant hue. If the feeling of blood under his claws, on his skin, in his hair and soaked into his clothes ever became normal, if it was ever something truly able to be numbed and ignored. If seeing his shadow with pointed ears and elongated claws and shredded shirts gave him day terrors like the Nogitsune never went away; a paranoia that everyone could see how fucking messed up (how scary) he was. If Scott ever truly moved on from feeling afraid of being a monster, of becoming a Monster. Not all monsters do monstrous things, but all Scott has ever seen is monsters who choose to act like their namesake.
If he continues to be cautious and aware of his teeth, of his eyes, of how blood is overwhelming and what it's like to be afraid --- because if he looses his humanity, his tie to slow healing and faulty lungs and what it feels like to be prey to somebody else, how will he be any different from the monsters that plague him?
Scott is the outlier, and he does not let his monstrous features define how he chooses to behave and who is chooses to be.

as a non binary person who likes my boobs it is both a blessing and a curse bc on the one hand they make me look hot but on the other hand most ppl will see em and think woman especially bc I also tend to present more fem, and my presentation doesn't give me gender dysphoria but what does give me a gender ick is knowing that people will always perceive me as a woman and rlly the only time im okay with that is when genderqueer sapphics do it bc I know they get the whole woman ig but not a woman but yes but definitely no thing

i'm so emotional about hilda ending rn but we're gonna channel that emotion so let's talk about bookends. a thing that stories do to make them feel very satisfying is drawing deliberate parallels between the beginning and the end. season 2 does this; episode 1 introduces the troll conflict and episode 12 addresses it (and leads directly into the mountain king). season 3 does this too; we begin in episode 1 with a visit to tofoten and episode 8 entirely set in tofoten (except for the very end). bookending the seasons with the introduction and conclusion of a particular conflict and story arc gives the viewer an incredible sense of satisfaction and closure.
but now that hilda has officially ended, i think we can say the same for the very beginning and the very end of the series. initially hilda lives alone with twig and her mother, adores the wilderness and doesn't want to leave it. the entire series is predicated on her making friends and figuring out life in the big city of trolberg. if the year between the beginning and the end of the series didn't happen, hilda would have happily stayed in fairy country without issue. but she's adamant that she has to leave, because she's made real friends and changed and learned so much within that year. her change in motivation is testament to how much she has grown. for the very first episode and the very last episode to highlight this just illuminates her development and the journey we have been taken on by watching her growth. and i just think that's such a beautiful thing. the final episode touches on this; hilda wants the human world because there's always something new to discover. she doesn't want to stay stagnant. she wants to explore. she wants to change. she wants to live.
and so, such is the life of an adventurer (sobs in a corner)

Apropos of @illnessfaker’s post I guess I’m increasingly feeling like bodymind noncompliance is a better conceptual framework than transphobia to understand the huge assemblage of oppressive techniques designed to eliminate us. there is a broader concerted effort here to violently and often spectacularly evict certain bodies from not only the public view, but the collective imagination.
some of these bodies have been achieved via biomedical intervention, and others by the refusal of it. There’s no ideological coherence regarding medical “intervention” itself. The practice — the process — the cruelty in the act of evicting and the resulting foreclosure of trans futures — is the point.
Ultimately it’s that bodies are punished for offering trans futures, trans potentialities.

it's not just me but we've come to the conclusion that demons are intimately close to humanity while angels are on the edges of it but when they touch humanity they get burnt like a hand to a stove
demons know what everything on earth is while angels are infinitely curious
this makes them jaded and naive respectfully

The soundtrack for the digital version of Wingspan is so great it's the closest a regular person can come to knowing That Thing Beyond the Self without going on a hike to the tallest mountain
