Sunday

On long drives, I contemplate Eden; that lush valley of green, bursts of shining fruit, sweet animals. Adam missing his rib and Eve with a starry pupil. Touched. Then, destruction in an instant. A blink.

You are never promised what you are given.

I pass a catatonic slur of trees, flatlands, a sign reminding us that Jesus saves. I don’t blame Eve. I know what it means to be deceived, tricked by a talking snake. The lure of realms. The draw of real magic. I used to haunt the streets of Nevada, blitzed as a smudge drawn by a child who believes in rainbows and catastrophe.

I was a drunk, a shadow without a shadow; donkey brains. Once, I passed out on Easter. All of the kiddies slouched in front of the television, action figures sprayed across the carpet. A slather of cake. When you’re kept in the cellar for long enough, that’s what you think the world is. I thought I was worth the dirt on the ground. I thought I was dead.

But things changed.

I was the princess of detox; sweating a hallucinogenic spritz, seeing fairies fucking on the walls. And Stella got me this gig. That was five years ago. I’ve not had a drink since. I abstain like a bearded monk.

I deliver cargo all over, fourteen hour shifts. I use the disgusting gas station showers, the drain full of hairs of a million men, the tiles smeared with atomic piss. Getting fat on Boston cream donuts and stars. The best part is driving. Oldies on the radio, a DJ’s smooth voice at one in the morning. I drive to erase; to forget my mother in her moonlight, my sisters bent over cafeterias, all the women who stole my wings. I drive to eradicate. I drive to destroy; I can forgive Eve. No name. No ideologies. No return address. No shapeless, mumbling nothing waiting for me at home. No begging.

I’m in South Dakota.

All around, the trees stretch out against the breathless dark like naked women. It’s frigid here. I can see my breath. I unload the cargo and then I head north, cutting through the dense forests and narrow roads.

I drive until I reach St. Martha’s Chapel. A small, white chapel out in the middle of a still piece of land. The fog seems to rise. I park and get out. When I walk into the chapel, there are a few glossy wooden pews and a shrine. I sit in a pew and send off a few words. I sit for a moment. There is no one here. I feel a weight upon me. Someone’s giant hand. South Dakota didn’t kill me. There’s a lot to be thankful for.

I feel God; I let go.

As I walk out of the chapel into the harmless, seething, and beautiful night, I get a call from Dixie. An old love. All peroxide bottles and gummy worms. Her voice travels down the line like a pinball. She says hello and apologizes for the hour; she’s drunk. I can tell from her syllables, the stumble of her alphabet. She goes on to say that she loved me as much as she has ever loved a thing. Our time spent in the saloon; wearing her panties in hotel rooms, shards in our tea.

It’s funny, she says though it isn’t.

How you can love someone in a slaughterhouse. How the world turns like a drowsy Ferris wheel. A glint in the trees. I tell her I’m at a chapel.

Where do the prayers go? She asks. I imagine they reach the atmosphere and then fall back down like deflated balloons scraping the ceiling. When it isn’t your birthday anymore.

And you’re getting old.

Everyone's favorite foods are on their character sheets but since 13(WW) doesn't have a character sheet I'll just tell yall that they have a sweet tooth and love pastries. Especially strawberry cream puffs. But anything sweet is their weakness.

Otherwise Dixie(M715) is a stoner, so he snacks regularly and just will eat anything.

Aure(M715) also likes sweets and candy.

Zelda(M715) likes carbs, that thing will just sit down and eat a whole ass loaf of bread with nothing on it and be happy as can be.

James, Cody, and Rowan(M715) all have a weakness for gas station food since they're all on the road so often.

Ghost Streets of Onion Creek in Austin, Texas In the 1970s, the area around Austin's Onion Creek was developed into subdivisions with thousands of single-family homes. At the time, southeast Austin was one of the few remaining areas of the city that hadn't seen any significant growth over the years. And as it turned out, that was for good reason. Due to mapping errors, many of the homes, went up in parts of the Onion Creek vicinity where 25-year floods are commonplace. It soon became clear that even the 25-year designation was incorrect. The first major flood to hit Onion Creek arrived in 1998, spreading through more than 100 homes. Three years later a larger flood devastated the area, resulting in over 400 homes being flooded. When Hurricane Rita dropped a huge amount of rain on the Austin area in 2006, even more houses were drenched. But none of these disasters compared to the catastrophic Halloween Flood of 2013, during which Austin received over 10 inches of rain during a single 24-hour period. Onion Creek rose by 11 feet in a mere 15 minutes and eventually hit an all-time high of 41 feet (topping a 1921 record by three feet). Water coursed through it at twice the velocity of Niagara Falls—enough to easily topple houses and trees, and move multi-ton objects like boulders and automobiles. The Halloween flood killed five people and damaged over 1,200 houses. After the first major flood in 1998, city officials had signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a comprehensive study to determine whether FEMA's original maps for the area were generated in error. As it turned out, they were. Given the Onion Creek area's relatively inexpensive housing built almost entirely on slab foundations, the Army Corps concluded that the best course of action would be to buy out the homes in Onion Creek's most flood-prone areas. After Hurricane Rita, the city acquired 114 properties using federal FEMA funds, and 209 more using additional sources of funding. The destruction from the 2013 flood spurred quick action on the city's part: Austin leaders scrambled to cobble together enough funds to acquire an additional 533 homes, most of which had already been severely damaged by the flood, with many beyond repair. By 2018, the city had acquired more than 800 homes, though a few holdouts opted to keep their properties despite the flood risk. Nearly all of them were demolished. In 2019, the city decided to convert the 290 acres it had acquired over the previous 20 years into what is now known as the Onion Creek Metropolitan Park at Yarrabee Bend. Still, given the bureaucratic difficulties involved in moving or destroying existing streets on a city grid, or even the "curb cuts" installed to facilitate vehicular entry to a home's driveway or garage, Onion Creek's "ghost streets" are both open to the public and plainly visible to this day. Starting at the gas station located at the intersection of William Cannon Dr. and Pleasant Valley Rd., head southward down the latter street. The first left turn, onto Onion Creek Dr., leads into the area's first section to be developed – and also the first to be acquired by the city and demolished. Just south of it, the Yarrabee Bend area is part of the section acquired and demolished after the Halloween 2013 flood. On the east side of the creek (accessible via William Cannon) – in the regrettably named Onion Creek Plantations subdivision, which includes streets such as Dixie Dr. – there's a mixture of empty lots where homes formerly stood, along with ones located just outside of the flood zone that look little-changed since their construction decades ago. Despite the houses being bulldozed, city officials still have a lot of work to do in cleaning up these former residential neighborhoods. A number of the area's former residents planted non-native trees & plants: some, like bamboo, have grown in a largely uncontrolled manner, while others have simply died due to a lack of care or insufficient regular watering. The area gets little foot traffic at night, resulting in some persons illegally dumping refuse right along the streets, and it's had the safety concerns as every other local park stemming from parts of Austin's unhoused community that tried relocating to the vicinity, but concerns regarding the latter have largely abated now that the Austin Police Department has begun enforcing the city's ban on overnight camping once again. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/onion-creek-ghost-streets

in the same vein as gas stations, people have very strong opinions about grocery stores (price chopper is the best no doubt) but it's actually mind boggling how many different chains there are

omg yeah i think one of the most fucked up things abt the east coast is they have giant which has the same font n everything as giant eagle but they’re different stores. also i think for me aldi wins. maybe aldi > geagle > winn dixie > kroger > meijer ?? wegmans and whole foods don’t exist out of spite

Right at the edge of the Gaston School campus in Joinerville, Texas, stood the Dixie Service Station. Sidney White worked at the gas station, and he lived right there in a tent. He decided that he couldn’t expect his wife to live in a tent, so he built the house next to the station to provide her with a nice place to stay. He actually built the house around the tent while they were living in it. Mrs. White then ran a small, old fashioned snack bar on the other side of the house, where townsfolk (and the kids from the school) loved to eat hamburgers and other such food.

Police say that Julick was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by a Lakeside Park-Crestview Hills police officer at a Speedway gas station on Dixie Highway in Erlanger.

While the female officer who conducted the traffic stop was verifying identification, police say Julick, who had a warrant for parole violation, fled from the car.

“She was aware that he fled and heard a pop-pop sound that she realized later were gunshots,” police said. “As he fled from the car, he took several steps, and then he turned with the gun in his hand took a two-handed grip and then fired.”

At that time, another Lakeside Park-Crestview Hills Police officer, who was headed south on Dixie Highway, observed a man running as the first officer was calling in about the fleeing suspect on her radio.

That officer diverted his cruiser and pulled up into a driveway where the man he believed to be the suspect was fleeing.

“As he was pulling up the driveway, he saw Jacob Julick turn towards him, again take that two-handed shooting position while moving backwards and up the driveway and fire multiple rounds in his direction.” “Both officers backed their cars into cover positions and assumed cover and waited for their back up.”

The call of shots fired triggered a response from multiple agencies. Despite an extensive search, the suspect could not be located.

The driver of the vehicle Julick was a passenger in identified him and confirmed the officers’ accounts that he had fired at them.

An additional charge of attempted murder of a police officer stems from a separate incident in Covington during which Julick allegedly tried to ram a police car.

The officer involved in that incident described a high-speed chase through the streets of Covington and into a shopping center in Latonia. According to the officer, Julick pulled into a dead-end street and was blocked in by her patrol car.

The officer said Julick headed toward the cruiser at a high rate of speed, estimated at about 45 miles-per-hour, and she had to move her vehicle out of the way quickly to avoid a collision.

Julick again managed to escape and remained on the run until he was captured by a team that included U.S. Marshals and the Cincinnati S.W.A.T. team in Westwood.

“This is a very dangerous individual,’ police said. “Obviously this manhunt went on for a lot longer than we wanted it to, but I’m glad he was eventually able to be taken into custody without any injury to any law enforcement officer.”

Tornado Safety Tips

It's that time of year again, and my tornado post was pretty popular, so I decided to break off my tornado safety section and make it its own post.

Those of us who live in Tornado Alley have grown up with a lot of this, but if you are new to the area, or perhaps live in the deep south, the new tornado hot-spot known as "Dixie Alley" here in the storm community, it is CRITICAL that you know what to do in case of a tornado. The southeast has the highest concentration of pre-fab homes (mobile homes) in the nation. If you live in one, please have a tornado plan in place as trailers and pre-fab homes will NOT protect you from a tornado. The best place to be is underground, but in the south, basements are few and far between.

What makes a tornado?

The National Weather Service has a great explanation for why some storms produce tornadoes:

The key atmospheric ingredients that lead to tornado potential are instability - warm moist air near the ground, with cooler dry air aloft and wind shear - a change in wind speed and/or direction with height. An unstable airmass promotes the development of strong updrafts, while wind shear will further increase the strength of the updraft, and promotes the rotation from which tornadoes are produced.

All thunderstorms have the potential to produce tornadoes, but the type of storm that is most commonly tornadic is the supercell. This very severe, long-lived thunderstorm contains circulation aloft (mesocyclone) that grows upward through the storm and downward toward the ground. When conditions are favorable, tornadoes will be produced. Supercells may produce strong, violent tornadoes, or several tornadoes over a period of several hours.

Now, let's talk about the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning.

A TORNADO WATCH means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadic supercell thunderstorms. A PDS TORNADO WATCH means "Particularly Dangerous Situation" and only a handful of these types of watches are issued every year, so when one is issued for your area, it's time to keep your eyes to the sky and be weather aware!

A TORNADO WARNING means that a tornado has either been indicated by radar or spotted and reported by a trained storm spotter, and your location is under imminent threat. When a warning is issued, it's time to drop everything and put your tornado plan into action. When a warning is issued, you will have approximately twelve to fifteen minutes to put your plan into action (though warning times get a little better each year!).

What can you do?

Identify a nearby shelter - this can be anything from a dedicated communal storm shelter to a gas station to a grocery store to a church, just make sure it has sturdy walls (The best place to be is underground, but in the south, basements are few and far between). If going to a store, the store teams will show you where to go inside the store.

Wear sturdy clothes - sneakers/tennis shoes, jeans and a good shirt or jacket are good, in case you need to climb through rubble.

Get a weather radio - most tornado deaths happen in the middle of the night. Remember, outdoor warning sirens are just that - outdoor. They are intended to tell people outside that it is time to take shelter. You may or may not hear them inside. Weather radios save lives, and many places have sales on them in March.

Have important documents ready to go - stick them in your purse ahead of time so you know you have them when you leave or it's time to take shelter inside your home.

Have an emergency supply of medication, batteries, water, and small snacks - if you are trapped after the storm, you will want this small stash to take care of you and your family while you wait for help to arrive.

Kennel your pets - as the storm approaches, have them in their carriers. Be aware that some places may not allow you to bring them inside, even in emergencies. So make sure to locate a shelter that will allow them.

What to do when sheltering:

If sheltering in your own home - go to the lowest level of your house and choose a room with no outside walls. If this is not available, choose a room with the least amount of outside walls. Avoid areas with lots of glass.

If sheltering in a store - follow the prompts of the store employees. They will show you where their tornado area is.

Assume the tornado position - if you went to school in Tornado Alley, you probably know this one. Facing the wall furthest from the outside of the house, sit with your legs folded under you and lean forward into a ball shape. Place your hands on the back of your head and neck to protect them.

Severe weather season peaks in April and May, but remember that a tornado can happen any time the ingredients are right and everyone east of the Rocky Mountains are at a higher risk of seeing one!

Which is why I need ASKS BABY. The only reason you feel like you know more about WW is because I have THOUSANDS of asks about those losers so you've gotten to know them better(and i haven’t put up the full posts but thats still YOUR FAULT). But y'all are slacking on even just asking the stereotypical stuff about Untitled and WCA 😡

There's James. Poor boy went missing on a camping trip because SOMEONE can't keep their hands to themselves.(It's Leo. Leo can't keep their hands to themselves.) He’s just a silly little cowboy. Just a handsome fella. He grew up on a ranch with his preacher father and doesn’t have a lot of big dreams past just inheriting the ranch after his dad dies. If you can, ya know, keep Leo from killing him.

I mean, you won’t be alone in trying to save James! There’s to investigators that his parents hired. Cody and Rowan. Cody’s dad died when she was a kid and she grew up with her cop grandfather. She failed the psych eval to become a police officer herself and instead become a private investigator. Cody also has type 1 diabetes that she was born with. She’s very much just a hard-ass, gruff detective and only really has a soft spot for Rowan.

Speaking of Rowan... Rowan was an investigative journalist that met Cody at a crime scene they were both investigating. She was just annoyed by him at first, but he grew on her like a tumor. He grew up in middle class suburbia with his moms and went to a decent college for a journalism degree. He’s just dripping with charm and is genuinely friendly and cares about most people he meets. He’s usually the one to make sure Cody remembers her insulin.

I guess we can talk about Leo for a bit. Ugh. Leo is the local cult leader! Don’t we all have one? They run a church in town. The most popular church. They’re charming, gorgeous, well-spoken, and have a commune in the middle of the woods that no one ever really talks about? They themselves live in their mansion, but on the grounds of the estate, their followers live and take care of estate. And they also make sure no pesky investigators get onto the property to see what’s in the basement.(hint: it’s James)

Ooh how about Zelda? Zelda was born at Leo’s commune and it was raised by Leo and Secret. Because of the things it experienced, it no longer believes it’s human and is now a weapon to destroy both Secret and Leo. Most of Zelda’s life is a secret. Much like...Secret’s.

Secret is also a preacher, but they’re delusional and fully believe they are God’s messenger. This is all you get.

We also have Aure! Sweet, innocent Aure! She works at the local library and is the defacto town historian. She knows EVERYTHING about the town. Including Secret and Leo. She grew up here and has no desire to leave, she’s happy where she is.

And finally Dixie. Who we all know is...me. Me if I wasn’t just *vague hand gesture* ya know. He’s the delivery driver for the gas station you work at. He’s just a funny, lazy, stoner that never seems to be actually doing his job. Doesn’t he have other deliveries to make?? Why is he just hanging out at the gas station?? Boy get your ass on the road. He isn’t close with his family and is an only child that moved far away from his parents the second he could.
