Is it even Mandalorian romance if they haven't tried to knife each other at least once?

I've been thinking about the people I ship Din Djarin with, and realized that there's an inverse relationship between how much I ship a given couple, and how chill they are together.

Don't get me wrong, I'll happily ship Din with almost everyone, but the ones I get super into? Gimme some good angry fights.

(this says more about me than it does about any of these ships, and this is also 100% not a knock on any of the ships listed or not listed here. It's just me doing some pointless meta about my own tendencies)

In order:

Paz. I love him. They apparently fight all the goddam time. You cannot tell me there is not history there. It makes the times they're on the same side all the more impactful (and adorably awkward).

(I also ship Paz with Axe for the same reason)

2. Migs Mayfeld. Migs is just such a snarky shit, they have every reason to hate each other (/Migs has every reason to assume Din is gonna kill him). They've got the whole fun double-crossing history, and in many ways they're opposites and foils, but ultimately Migs respects and understands Din, and Mando is willing to trust him

3. Cobb Vanth: I mean, their first real interaction is "take it off or I will," so no surprise here. Vanth is very clearly 110% into Din, and they get over the violence phase of their relationship way faster than Din does with either Paz or Migs.

4. Boba Fett. They don't really have a murder phase of their relationship. We get a li'l tension and then they're besties. I ship it, but I'm not as into the ship, 'cause like, how can I ship Mandalorians if I haven't seen them fight each other?

5. Luke Skywalker. I love this ship because it's just...so logical, what with the coparenting. It's a ship in a slightly different category because it lends itself so much to the domestic/parent narrative. But if I'm reading Din/Luke fics, I like a nice (un)healthy dose of tension and possibly violence while they get to know each other

6. Omera. I love Omera/Din as a "what could have been if his life was very very different" ship--especially given that she apparently has some violence in her past that she's now escaped and found peace from.

Woodworker Din meta

AND THE DIN VERSION, HELL YEAH

If he had the choice, and was under no external influence, he'd wear the same pair of jeans, same t-shirt and same zip-up hoodie 24/7

he also has reading glasses, and can't drive without wearing sunglasses, oftentimes the round lenses Luke keeps in the front console of the Subaru

Luke taught him how to surf when they first moved in together, and the sight of Luke pulling off his wetsuit did things to his psyche he hasn't quite been able to forget

His favourite movie is the Sound of Music, and they watch it together on his birthday every year

He's an amateur photographer and often takes his camera out with them on hikes; photographing Luke just as often as the nature around him

He's not a picky eater, but he prefers familiar foods and recipes over fancier choices.

His favourite restaurant in town is a fish and chips shop right on the bay

He started making a canoe out of a felled tree on their property four or so years ago, and when he's feeling meditative, he goes out and works on it

Din cuts Luke's hair, and also taught him how to shave with a straight blade

Their tools are organized on peg boards, and are all kept in perfect working order at all times. The electrical components of their hand tools and small appliances are checked on a regular basis.

His toolbelt is one of the last tangible things he has of his father

But his tools are his adoptive mother's. She was a machinist

He met the Naberrie's all at the same time, sort of by accident.

And he just like

Yearns with a capital Y from afar until Leia takes pity on him

and they've been besties ever since.

One Christmas, Din said that he liked puffer vests and henley's

and that's all Anakin's bought him ever since

so over the years, DIn's wardrobe has grown to resemble the MEC menswear catalogue

he's got the Patagonia quarter zips in like

four colours

he has the hiking backpacks, the fancy knives

but he prefers the carefully kept hunting knife his father gave him over the rest and keeps it tucked in the trunk of the Subaru just in case

he's a man who speaks with his hands

and before he admits his love for Luke, he just... did things for him

he got him tea, makes sure he eats regularly

he fixed the porch swing before Luke noticed it was hanging weird

and the only times he's truly comfortable talking about the Big Stuff

that is

anything bigger than dishes and laundry and when high tide comes

he needs his hands occupied so he can speak his mind

he's loved Luke since he was sixteen

Warrior's Lullaby

Din sings to Grogu while trapped in a cave. Luke is entranced.

This is a musical illustration of/Mando'a cover inspired by a scene from Chapter 5 of The Start, by @snaurus, in which Din sings the Mando'a version of Rider's Lullaby (although he doesn't have the soundtrack accompaniment in the cave with them, of course. At least, not literally).

I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend The Timeline (the series to which The Start belongs). It’s so fun and interesting and full of adventure and shy idiots and chaotic dumbassery, and is just absolutely delightful. I cheer every time a new chapter comes out. This is my fanart of and tribute to their work, and I hope you enjoy.

Din knew that the man felt anger. They’d talked about it before, during those late nights at the kitchen table: at his masters, at his father, at the Emperor and the Empire. He’d seen the turbulence of it under the surface, the way Skywalker’s jaw tightened as he recounted the past or the way he paused before speaking, as if letting something pass through him. He knew that Skywalker’s anger had mellowed over the years, that it was twinned with compassion, that the desire for revenge he’d felt had transmuted into a desire for active justice. It was the Jedi way, Skywalker explained: to sit with negative emotion and then to move through it, letting it go to be a thing of the past. Over time it became less and less, until it was no longer a burden pressed tight and heavy to the body.

It sounded peaceful.

It sounded hard.

(Or, Din sees Luke angry for the first time.)

Unofficial headcanons of IJADIHIM pt. 2

Bo-Katan wasn't originally supposed to survive. I had a pinnacle sacrifice planned for her in the final confrontation. She was slated to sacrifice herself for the kids, but it killed the tension. She survived and became a cornerstone of the new mando government instead.

She and Paz have a Thing, which is just as dramatic as Leia and Han in ESB. He thinks she's the hottest piece of ass he's ever met (the perfect mando spouse to raise a battalion of ade with), and she thinks he's a moron for staying in the archives when there's real work to be done.

Speaking of real work, part of the reason I sent Han to the caves on Mandalore was to find the vein of beskar I hid there. Once he tells the Armourer, they're able to outfit new Mandos again, including the kids, who get their baby beskar'gam.

I had a commenter confused about Mand'alor Leia not exhibiting proper mando qualities.

However, have you considered: strong leadership, takes shit from nobody, fiercely protective over her family and saved two dozen babies from imps. She's Mando bait baby

Din tried so hard to avoid using his saber, mostly to keep the attention off of him should anyone come looking. After the war ended and the Rebels dispersed, rumours started swirling, and Force-sensitives started looking for him instead of Luke.

Which leads to lots of sexy dinluke time.

Luke has a competence kink, it's a problem

I saw a comic several years ago (pls tag me if you find it) of Ben seeing Din and just... losing his little mind on how cool he is. He's got a jETPACK he has ARMOUR, and a DOUBLE-BLADED SABER. He's the coolest cat Ben's ever seen. Plus, learning to temper and use his emotions via the Mandalorian ethos could balance him out in ways the Jedi couldn't. Leia saw this and kept the throne for him.

Leia's armour is painted to match her saber: copper, and silver with a super cool blue cape.

Side note, her saber is the prettiest thing I've ever seen.

Speaking of sabers, the saber making scene on Concord Dawn was one of my favourite scenes to write in the whole fic. That and their wedding on Yavin IV.

But Luke, with his two sabers, is learning jar'kai and doing pretty good at it.

Grogu is learning to be less possessive of his people, to not let it go into the Force (which feels... unhelpful in a child with that much trauma) but to shift it into a more peaceful ethos. He loves his siblings to death and he and Rey are chaos babies together.
