This is my problem. I don’t know how to talk along the surface of things, but I also don’t want to unearth the ugly stuff, over and over again, for people who are just passing through my life. It’s depleting. Like every time I dole out a kernel of my history to someone who’s not going to become a fixture in my life, a piece of me gets carried away, somewhere I can never get it back.

We are required to act out every scene. One kid has a plastic Master sword from last halloween, one a cutlass from a pirate cruise. I have an antique T-square as my battle axe, and a swiffer handle for a javelin, together with a silver serving platter shield. We have made bows from sticks. Last night we ate croissants and Bananas while chatting up NPCs and when it was time for bath, the wife directed the kids to the local hot springs.
Wife (DM) and I decided to start a campaign with our two 6 year olds. We are a wood elf fighter named Flower Gossamer, a halfling rogue named Golden Knife the Legendary Slayer, and a human paladin named Chuck (short for Charlotte).

I only read as much as I do because of Libby's audiobook offerings. After kids I went a couple of years only reading on airplanes and in waiting rooms, maybe two books a year* because I just didn't have time to stop and put my eyes on it. Now I average 2-4 books per month, almost entirely while driving or making dinner. The price of audible at that rate would be prohibitive. I don't have time to check out physical audiobooks from the library. I just would not read without it. Libby gave me back my fave hobby.
*I have such a clear memory of trying to read Murderbot on my phone in the dark while rocking and shushing an infant. I was desperate! 😭
"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.
