Star, slant, snake, child

this was from Favored which I began and stopped because I disliked it, but the concept is still in my head:

On a fair night in the desert, when the moon shone silver against the sands and the breeze swam into the marbled halls, a baby was born.

“A girl,” his Eminence spoke, teeth shining white in the candlelight. “A disappointment to you, Dhulan?” His descendant did not meet his gaze. His Eminence did not require a response; he merely swept back his robes and laughed a hearty laugh. “A fine thing,” he mused, gold eyes observing the night. The stars twinkled beyond the balcony. “Children are always good to have. You never know what they may bring.”

Dhulan’s lips moved imperceptibly, words heard only by a servant: “My wife?”

The servant hesitated, and in those three seconds Dhulan knew what was to come.

Happy Diwali week!! Today I went window shopping and saw all the beautiful diwali decor..and seriously when people say "dhulan ki tarah saja hua" they are not lying. The city looks so beautiful with all the lights..i am going to put up the lights tomorrow and i am just so content. I love the period from navratra till diwali! It is so magical.
