Wendy Ann Melvoin

HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY Wendy Ann Melvoin, guitarist and singer-songwriter, best known for her work with Prince as part of his backing band The Revolution, and for her collaboration with Lisa Coleman as one half of the duo Wendy & Lisa. Melvoin met Prince in 1983, one night when she was practicing guitar in Lisa Coleman´s room. A few days later, when guitarist Dez Dickerson didn't show up at soundcheck, Prince asked her to play his guitar; that same night, Prince invited her to join the band. Wendy's debut show with The Revolution was a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre at the First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis on August 3, 1983. This concert was recorded, and some of the tracks ended up in Prince's next record, most notably the title track. Wendy was 19 at that time. Shortly after the completion of Prince and The Revolution's 1986 album Parade, Coleman and Melvoin left the Revolution and started their own duo, Wendy & Lisa, also known as Girl Brothers.

A-T-2 342 Prince

Prince released his fifth studio album 1999 on October 27, 1982. It was the first album to be recorded with The Revolution and although not strictly considered as a Prince And The Revolution album 'And The Revolution" appears backwards in the 'eye' on the sleeve artwork. It was Prince's first top 10 album in the US. 1999 was remastered and reissued in 2019, this is after Prince's death in 2016 so it was released with a Super Deluxe edition including 24 previously unissued 'vault' tracks from this era

Prince wrote, performed, and produced the first two albums by The Time with little input from the group other than small contributions from Morris Day. The Time's second album What Time Is It? came out in 1982, 777-9311 was the lead single. 777-9311 was an actual phone number belonging to Prince's guitarist Dez Dickerson

Prince's original girl group Vanity 6 fronted by the tragic Vanity (Denise Matthews) R.I.P. Matthews is also on the cover of Cameo's 1982 album Alligator Woman. I don't know what's more upsetting kidney problems from 10-years of crack addiction or becoming a born again christian. Vanity 6 released their only album in 1982. Nasty Girl was a hit in the clubs and I've posted a hip hop answer record here at the bottom of this post (A-T-2 300.) Nasty Girl is great but I also like Make Up off the album/ b side of their debut single He's So Dull

Prince uses the Linn LM-1 drum on the last three of the above tracks

A few of Prince's songs were also recorded by other artists, most notably The Pointer Sisters recording of I Feel For You which Chaka Khan was about to put her stamp on, and I Don't Wanna Stop recorded by Ren Woods

Most the singles off Prince's album 1999 were released the following year, in 1983, apart from the track 1999 itself. In 1982 singles were still being released off 1981's album Controversy which means I can share the dance remix of
