This past year I was a counselor at a week long summer camp for children.

For a 168 hours, then, almost every interaction I had was with “youth.”  During my time at the camp, I learned a lot about the kids I was looking after: their heroes, their interests, and in some cases, even their life aspirations.

But the thing that struck me the most about this group of kids was the degree to which they were familiar with the Internet.

It seemed like not a minute would go by without some reference to YouTube content, or some other internet meme.  Consistently, these kids worshipped YouTube streamers, tracking their content uploads with a kind of religious fervor.

Ultimately, it was such experiences that have led me to understand a quintessentially modern characteristic of today’s youth: their interconnectivity with the world around them.

Today’s youth—like never before —are able to engage with “foreign” people and ideas. Geographic barriers are becoming obsolete, and the world of the modern child is exponentially expanding.  For centuries, children have typically lived in a geographic bubble—their sources of influence typically limited to realms like the home, school, and the neighborhood. Now, in the present day, this reality is changing—radically.

As evidence for such claims, consider the kind of experience offered to children on PBS’s “Design Squad Global” site.

Featuring an interactive map, this site is just one example of an online medium that allows users to browse content that is submitted from all over the world.  Indeed, for much of today’s youth, global interactions are becoming the norm.  Someone playing a video game over XBOX live could potentially be playing with someone from virtually anywhere in the world.  Similarly, YouTube is a truly global interface—a digital space where anyone who has internet connection can upload personalized content free of charge.

Many fear the kind of influence such unfettered technology can have on children.  Such individuals, for example, feel that modern technology is difficult to monitor and control.  For children, after all, the internet is not always a safe place.  To combat such dangers, though, parental controls have developed that allow mothers and fathers to ensure that the content their children view is safe and appropriate.  Even a site as vast as YouTube, for example, has a settings option to “Set Parental Controls.”

Personally, moreover, I think the “pros” of global communication outweigh its “cons.” I believe, for example, that intercultural communication is essential in reducing the global impact of things like racism and discrimination.  For many young people, foreign ideas are beginning to seem less “foreign”—a trend that is encouraging today’s youth to accept cultures that are unfamiliar.  As the internet is expanding to more and more countries, global interconnectivity will only flourish (Already, 56 percent of children ages 8 to 12 have a cellphone). When considering the exponential rate of technological progress, I cannot wait to see what the world will look like for tomorrow’s youth.  Perhaps I am too optimistic, but as a “youth” myself, I think there is a lot to look forward too.
