omg if u feel like elaborating i would LOVE 2 hear more about how kyle would get the red ring in ur head <3
while i understand why the comics have kyle master the red ring thru atrocitus making him angry, after all its the most logical way to do that if u don't care about character arcs and growth, i still find it deeply stupid and disagree with that choice, like most of his white lantern arc choices
atrocitus, especially in his early appearances, is calm and collected, he has bursts of rage, of course, but often talks out his ideas, he explains more than once his motivations and organizes the red lanterns and guides them pretty rationally, in addition to all the times he spends thinking and being alone with his thoughts. he's smart and knows how to think, and he wouldn't need long to get how to draw rage out of kyle
i think the best way to appeal to kyle is thru love and personal involvement. he is a hero and cares deeply and wants to save ppl but tragedy makes him sad, not angry. the only time we see him truly mad and out of himself with anger is when his family and friends are hit, alex, terry, his mom, etc. his scariest moments are when he forgoes any of his self-imposed limits to avenge the ppl he loves, which is the whole point of the red ring in the first place, not just mindless anger but the anger of the victims seeking justice
i don't think atrocitus showing him a bunch of ppl dying in conflicts would do it. kyle would be sad, and would want to involve himself and do something, frustrated he can't, angry, but it wouldn't strike him deep enough to be mad with rage, even with atrocitus keeping him from acting, he would be angry at atrocitus himself but 20 min in an armlock is really not enough to make him or anyone feel truly powerless.
it would not be enough to unlock his rage and let him tap into it: every single red lantern has been created because of terrible injustices that have been inflicted on them or their lives, not nondescript or tragedies that do not involve them directly
in my perfect kyle white lantern run, atrocitus would not even try brute force with him, he would know kyle's reputation and would pick it out from talking with him for five minutes. instead, he would take him away and put him on his altar and do some magic, get inside his own head and pick at all those moments of ugly, cold, devastating rage that overtook him in his past and make him understand that rage is a powerful tool, not just something to fight and get over (that's where we hit a roadblock with the concept of the rings and strictly divided emotions, u cannot only feel one, they're intertwined, but that's another topic, because once again just like everything for kyle, his anger is linked to his love and grief)
kyle does accept his anger, especially in his later stories, and does work with it, but it's never for its sake, he pushes thru and leaves it behind and tries to calm down and get himself under control. another point is that kyle does not want to be angry, he does not seek it out and will try to remain calm in situations until something beyond his control tips the balance and angers him beyond control (see examples above) and we see how being in that state tires him out. so another thing would be for atrocitus to show him how anger can keep the fire burning, not just start it, can be a useful tool, and how to dreg up the painful memories and feelings and channel them
my vision is kyle on his altar, atrocitus digging his knife inside him and drawing out blood to use for his magic, it would involve kyle living through those memories of anger but atrocitus not seeing them, he would stand by his side and guide him thru it all like those meditation podcasts do. he would tell him about his own ring, how he feels maddening rage every minute of every day about what happened to his family and how he channels that anger, not the love or sorrow he felt and feels but the white-hot burning point of his anger that keeps him walking, keeps him fighting, how the fire keeps him alive, the desires to take revenge and serve out justice that was never met being his way to honor the memory of those unjustly killed, that forgiving will not bring them back just like vengeance won't, but that there must be consequences dealt to right the balance (and maybe even meet with other lanterns with their own perspective, like that one red lantern who doesn't agree, or bleez who challenges atrocitus on that view)
just, conversations about what anger means to each individual, and how kyle comes to face his own capacity for it when he spent so long avoiding it and seeking peaceful and rational outcomes, sometimes working against his emotional desires (especially in the arcs before his white lantern and how the corps fell apart, how he tried to follow glc logic and was failed by them)
anger being the one ring kyle mastered without fighting or making construct would be an interesting perspective on it, and challenge his view on it, that yes atrocitus has been shown into great fits of rage but here he is, sitting on his altar as he explains his life and reasons for it all and asks him to lay down so he can do a ritual with him. calmy, because anger is not just destruction, anger builds as well. and it's also because i need to see kyle with his ribs split open and blood running down his body <3
the next steps would be atrocitus killing him, slipping the ring on his finger and letting him emerge as a feral being and plunging him in the lake of blood, having explained all he can to him he lets kyle fight his way out of the lake, understand his own anger and desires for justice separate from his duty as a hero. because that's another thing, it's vital that this arc is later in his career, in the beginning we see how he tries to uphold heroes' values (don't kill, save ppl, be impartial, etc) and later on embraces the green lantern corps and some of their views before evolving thru all he goes thru (ion, ion2, the fall of the corps, everything that happens when he's on earth, etc) that push him to reconsider his own ethics and moral stance. i dont think he could come to agree with personal vendetta and bloody vengeance before his mom was murdered
but mostly, it's about him being able to dredge up that anger without the memories, and being able to keep it steady enough to use it, forcing him to recon with the anger he has in himself and how he can call himself kyle and live his life on his love and duty to other while harboring depth of rage and fear beyond any other (if we follow the idea that ring bearer have the most of X emotions in their sector). i think it would be very satisfying to see kyle after so long trying his best to be a good person learn about this anger and embrace it, it would give him an edge and a sharper character that would be fascinating to dig into. the white lantern, the being supposed to look over the universe and keep it safe, being able to feel rage so terrible he spits up burning blood and still looks composed and in control the entire him. scary stuff <3

@derelictship tagged me to post my top 9 films watched in 2023. It didn’t specify “for the first time,” but I went with that despite how large a couple of my rewatches (watched first in 2022) loomed over this year as well…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Be or Not to Be (1942) - Absolutely adore this film. I actually forgot that I watched it last year because it’s really and truly climbed inside my brain and it feels like I’ve known it forever. It’s the film that made me start paying attention to Ernst Lubitsch as a director when I had the realization of “WAIT a second - isn’t that also the Trouble in Paradise guy????” - so I owe it everything for that alone. I rewatched it a bunch of times and showed it to four people, to pretty positive reviews! My cousin even unexpectedly requested that we watch it AGAIN so my other cousin can see it! My second favorite of the year.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) - Only watched this once, but I loved it immediately and am itching to rewatch. Will be seeing it in a proper theater in February and bringing my mom along, so hopefully she likes it as much as I do!
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - I watched this one on my birthday while tipsy from wine and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The first film I really enjoyed Cary Grant in, which made me very happy because I WANTED to like him, but I just kept hating the roles I was seeing him in for various reasons. I’ve liked everything I’ve seen of him since, though, so all is well now!
A Night at the Opera (1935) - Another one I am itching to rewatch because I enjoyed it so much the first time. I want to show it to my family, but I feel like it’s most effective if you’re already familiar with the Marx Brothers, which my family is not, so I’m figuring out how best to facilitate that.
The Third Man (1949) - THE film of the year for me. I loved it so much the first time, that I didn’t believe it could possibly have been that good and had to rewatch it to confirm that yes, it really is. I’ve rewatched it several more times since (including once with my family, who enjoyed it), and I watch the whole thing with a smile on my face because it just makes me so, so happy.
The Seventh Seal (1957) - Decided to finally watch this one while grievously ill (VERY mild cold, but my first since 2018) without knowing what it was about, which was a TRIP and it Got Me, so here we are. I’ve told James this already, but it was a conversation with my coworkers involving this film that led to the infamous tragedy/catharsis post. I’m also gonna be seeing this one Big in a theater this year!
12 Angry Men (1957) - If I recall correctly, I watched this one during the same illness and really enjoyed it. Yet another I am excited to rewatch sometime this year!
How to Steal a Million (1966) - I forget who recommended this one to me, but thank you! It was highly enjoyable and went directly onto my “favorites” list!
The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - Snuck in at the VERY end of the year! I had actually put it on my schedule for this year, but I got impatient and watched it early, so it counts for 2023. Yet another film where I had absolutely no idea what was happening or going to happen, and became more and more delighted as the film went on. Just procured a physical copy, so I’m going to be posting my favorite parts soon because you ALL need to see this and I will not rest until you do. Probably my third favorite after The Third Man and To Be or No to Be.
I watched around 60 new-to-me films in 2023, more than I have in any year EVER, and I plan to double that in 2024, so I’m excited to see what new gems I will “discover” for myself!

Whatever exists at the earth's center will get me sooner or later. Sooner. Than I think. That core of light squeezed tight and shut, dense as a star, as molten mirrors. Dark red and heavy. Slab at the butcher's. Already it's dragging me down, [...]

oh for the ask game: jk + 20 or 22 OR!! kylealex + 11 <3
i am glad to finally be able to exorcize this particular demon that's been rattling inside my head for a week. thank u for the prompt <3
things you said
11. things you said when you were drunk
“Hey,” Kyle slurred as he fell down the wall in a heap of limbs. “We weren’t expecting you tonight.” He looked up to Alex who laughed, a quick, bright fragment of laughter that rang through the air.
“We. There’s only you Kyle, you don’t need to play me like that.” She grinned and sat next to him, elegant in all the ways he wasn’t, her elbows resting on her bent knees, hands dangling in front of her. Her smile faded as she looked to the horizon, gaze stuck in the stars. “Beautiful sky, don’t you think?”
Kyle knew that if he looked ahead, he would catch the dark midnight sky of a Californian beach, far away from the cities so that the entire sky would shine with stars and constellations, with licks of white and pale blue like strokes of paint. He would see the moon, half black and pinned up there, he would see the occasional cloud passing through, maybe catch a few satellites blinking at him from up there.
He couldn’t, because Alex was sitting right beside him, her long hair brushing over her bare shoulder and her eyes so green, so bright.
“Yeah…” He mumbled, too busy studying her face, the line of her nose and the edge of her jaw, committing them to memories. “Beautiful.”
“You’re not even looking.” And she wasn’t looking at him either, eyes still brushing over the picture in front of them, but she knew. She knew and she was grinning. “Lovestruck fool.” She said then, and bit her lips as her cheeks darkened.
“Maybe. But I’m yours.” As he spoke, he felt something vicious twist inside his chest, hot white pain seizing his heart and squeezing until he couldn’t breathe anymore. A sob fell from his lips, a second, and he closed his eyes, turned away from her as tears spilled down his cheek. He tightened his fingers around the neck of the Whiskey and downed several more sips from the bottle, until he could breathe again.
“That’s new,” Alex spoke from his side, so soft he almost missed it, and an ugly laugh escaped his grasp, sad and heavy.
“Right.” He blinked his eyes open, found Alex watching him with a concerned expression. He wasn’t sure when he started drinking, but the sun was still out, hot and unbearable on his neck. Everything felt fuzzy now, far away, and yet he still hurt. He just wanted to forget about it.
“Right.” She echoed, the corner of her mouth twisted in an unhappy frown. “You know I will leave.” He knew, and still, he sat up at her words, the rush of blood making the earth shiver beneath his legs.
“Don’t.” He begged. “Please. Stay. I love you. Please, Alex, I can’t do this without you.” He tried to reach for her, missed when his hand aimed several inches too far, cursed the wave of sickness that the alcohol brought along.
“Oh, Kyle…” Her voice sounded muffled, nothing like the bright and assured tone she always carried. “You can.”
“I don’t wanna.” He felt his stomach lurch at the idea of waking up without her. “I love you. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you enough. I’m sorry for- for everything, Alex, please.”
He reached out, and a scream ripped his throat when his hand collided with the warm construct, nothing like the way her skin felt under his hand, hot and solid. He couldn’t focus on her image, the green light fading to a blurry figure as he felt his brain fogging up, the night of drinking catching up with him.
He let his hand fall, the Green Lantern ring still shining on his finger as the ghostly Alex stood up and walked away, a mess of shapes that slipped through his grasp.
“Please, don’t leave me.” He sobbed and pulled his head between his arms, refusing to watch her fade away. “Please...”

8 shows to get to know me better thank youuuu @derelictship
1. legend of korra, to this DAY! to this day. what a show. amazing world building, development of technology, the place of the avatar waning… i was delectable! korra remains one of my favourite characters.
2. black sails, which, yeah. pirate show of all time. “treasure island prequel mixed with golden age of piracy” is an insane concept to pull off.
3. arcane, HELLO it was so good, animation and characters went so hard and it just slapped. is there anything so undoing as a daughter. yeah.
4. severance, watched recently and mmmm it’s just compelling. i’ve thought about it every week since we finished.
5. yellowjackets, we all know why this is here (milfanie lynskey)
6. kings, which i watched a full decade after it was aired and cancelled and was devastated even then. i just know if i rewatched it the woman i am today, jack/david wouldn’t even get a look in compared to david/s—[i am taken out by snipers]
7. leverage, very good show, obviously i was there for parker/hardison/eliot who were everything to me in 2017.
8. super— no i’m just kidding. imagine. probably the borgias. stupidly huge budgeted show rife with historical inaccuracies but to this day i’m still like wow they made CHOICES in the pilot and committed until cancellation. got to respect it and i love pretty historical dresses and family drama.
i would like to tag @zezran @shesnake @everythingeverywhereallatonce @xueyangapologist @brownbicon @unamused-kookaburra @ahoroa & of course anyone else who feels like it.

rules: list eight shows for your followers to get to know you better.
tagged by @alethiometry!! thank u bestie <333
tagging: @wolfhalls, @godsopenwound, @derelictship, @avgustea, @besukhov, @wolveswithoutteeth <3
(lets see if i HAVE 8 shows)
elementary. SHOW OF ALL TIME. it is truly the only sherlock holmes adaptation i've watched from the last 20 (30? 40??) years that feels like a modern adaptation and not a self-parody (miss sherlock excluded — i've yet to watch!). i never got the hate towards nyc being the setting except i guess america bad?? but it makes total sense imo and it breathes light into one of the most adapted books ever. jlm's sherlock is SO treasured to me, lucy liu's watson is just as dimensional as sherlock, girlboss moriarty, BEES, also the focus on recovery throughout the series gave it so much heart, its truly such a good adaptation. i know fundamentally its just some procedural crime show (and its biggest flaw is obviously the inclusion of ny-pd, s03 e08 you mean nothing to me) but i love her and i rewatch the first season pretty much every year. literally where would i be without her
the x files. mulder and scully have had an IRREVERSABLE impact on my fashion sense. i am watching every single episode with a notepad by my side and taking detailed notes of what they're wearing. i love this show so much, every other episode is outrageously problematic even for its time, but i'm obsessed. iconic theme tune (my dads ringtone btw). scully is one of my ultimate pop culture heroes but i think i'm more like mulder (my hero for being irritating). i think my favourite episode is wet wired. i've never seen anything past season 7.
the sopranos. WAIT! wait before u (understandably) judge me i promise its more than a dudebro mafioso show, i think the characters are all some of the best written characters i've ever encountered, and idk i don't watch a lot of similar shows but i don't get the impression that its about justifying the mafia lifestyle, quite the opposite. also the introspection that you see develop is phenomenal. what really floors me about the show is that the female characters are ALL so incredibly written, carmella soprano i love u 💍 i'm actually only half-way through this show so maybe the inclusion to this list is premature but i trust my judgement
succession. this show is constantly rotating in my mind like a slow roast. i'm also quite convinced that 90% of the fans are watching an entirely different show. is tom my favourite character YES but i hope shiv leaves him and he gets nothing in the divorce and he has to move back to iowa or wherever. he's the worst. marcia i love you
it's always sunny in philadelphia. embarrassing how many times i've seen seasons 2-10 but my brother and i's lexicon are primarily references from this show. i think my favourite episode is the cereal defense, it's so stupid.
1899. netflix i am gonna get you bitch 🔪 daniel crawling out of the atlantic ocean changed me
ummmm. i don't have 8 shows. can i leave this as a placeholder for yellowjackets because i see potential my loves <3 if not um. earth's greatest spectacles, the 3 part documentary series narrated by domhnall gleeson that changed my world. i think about it all the time. i love u new england i love u svalbard i love u okavango.
how to get away with murder.
Tumblr media
this show has done so much psychological damage, charlotte and i watched it together and i've not been the same since. i don't even know where to start; why is your penis on that dead girls phone. season 1 part 1 being the best few episodes of television ever and immediately going downhill after. annalise keating will send anyone to jail. bonnie killing a 22 year old because why not. whatever the hapstall case was. michaela pratt's villain era (ilu). laurel's flop era. connor's haircut. michaelasher breakup on some random crossover episode in favour of a character who gets about 2 minutes screentime. guy murdered at the gay wedding. michaela growling at someone in a grocery store. connor being the ONLY person to get arrested for murder(conspiracy?) out of the k5, while arguably being the person most removed from committing actual murder (flop king). gay divorce. frank incest reveal based entirely on the ''foreshadowing'' of some throwaway season 1 line. franklaurel girlies found dead. whatever the fuck was going on in the series finale. i'm not the same
