i think reading thre dear evan hansen book is probably the reason i ship treebros (somewhat platonically but still), because it shows how the two of them could have got along, if connor had lived. when evan visits connor’s room, he notes that they read the same books and evan considers that he possibly had more in common with connor than the rest of the school. and something about hearing evan’s internal monologue when he thinks about how he can ultimately relate to connor; there’s a line at the end of page 187:

and that just makes me think of what could have been between them. how they could have helped each other feel less alone. in one of connor’s chapters, he mentions it as well. and i think that’s one of the tragedies of dear evan hansen; that they could have had that kind of relationship, whether it be platonic or romantic. that connor and evan could have had each other and maybe they’d both feel better because of it. but they didn’t and instead we have a ghost and a lonely teenager who makes up a friendship so that he can feel less alone. i like to consider what could have been.
