Part 1 ~ Part 2 ~ Part 3 ~ Part 4 ~ Part 5
Tumblr media
It’s been a couple weeks since Ghost was introduced to you as your new bodyguard. The first few days were rough as Ghost spent most of his time understanding the palace layout and your daily schedules. Once he got more familiar with the entire place, though, he was much more relaxed. He got used to following close behind you all while understanding where to go if things went south. He took his job of protecting you very seriously, especially after getting to know you little by little.
You settled into the new addition to your routine nicely. While it was awkward trying to figure out what to talk about around bedtime, you always ended up finding something to open up about. Ghost always listened carefully.
At the end of the day, you both still managed to keep your distance. Besides the occasional stolen glances, the both of you were good about maintaining some professionalism. Even during tea time when he would accept your offer to sit with you. You normally didn’t speak about anything too specific since you didn’t want to get in trouble, so most of that time was enjoyed in complete silence. Ghost never minded. He understood that you had to be selective with your words. Sometimes, he admired how seriously you took your responsibilities as well.
It was a rainy day when you were given a revised schedule to follow for the next few days, one that had you raise your brows as soon as you saw how even more unusually packed it was. Your independent study time was scrapped. You didn’t have to attend piano lessons anymore either. Instead, they were replaced with etiquette-type classes. Table setting, conversation practice, ballroom dancing. Everything pointed to the preparation of a party.
As you looked over your schedule, the room was silent save for the patter of rain against the glass. Thunder lightly rumbled in the distance. Your mother sat across from you, giving you time to drink it all in. Ghost stood behind you near the shadows, watching everything unfold.
When you were done comprehending your schedule, you looked up at your mother inquisitively. “What is the occasion?”
“There is a gentleman that we have been communicating with who has recently entered the country for a trip abroad. He is an exceptional bachelor with the money and status to support a proper lifestyle. He sent an invitation for tea with us, but we figured that an important man like him needed a more memorable experience in Stuoca.” Your mother cheerfully explained, clearly excited for this party. She sipped her tea, proud of herself for orchestrating such an event to happen.
You picked up your favorite teacup and gripped it firmly. The warmth of the tea passing the porcelain and into your palms provided you comfort as your head swirled. Your mother wasn’t explicit in her intentions of this party and it bothered you. Reading into her words, you knew what she intended for you, though.
“You are marrying me off.” You revealed, your eyes widening at your little slip. You meant to choose better words, but perhaps you were growing too bitter to think straight. Ghost, who was listening intently, was now fully at attention like he was called by his captain.
At first, he listened for information. An outside party needed to be investigated in order to keep you safe. He didn’t pick up on what your mother was implying in the midst of it. When you exposed this truth, that’s when he grew rigid.
“Come now, you shouldn’t say it like that. We are securing your future. If you want to maintain the life that you have, then it would be good to marry. Besides, you are not getting any younger.” The queen jabbed with a bright smile. Her implicit insult stung.
Your mother was always like this. She was even more subtle in front of your father, so this was actually rather explicit of her. You had to bite your tongue to avoid letting your bitterness seep out once more. “My apologies. I am just surprised that this is happening so quickly.”
Her gaze sharpened as she graded your sincerity. It wasn’t like you had lied, but you avoided telling the full truth on how you felt. Your mother scoffed as you failed to exchange more grateful words with her. “This is for the best. You should be appreciative of this effort. Most women your age have to search for their security all by themselves. They rarely find the perfect one on the first try too. You're lucky that you won’t have to go through the pain of that.”
You bit your cheek hard to avoid an outburst, a metallic taste on your tastebuds. You didn’t say anything as your mother got up and left the room, allowing you to finish your teatime all by yourself. This was her idea of a punishment. If you couldn’t be grateful for her time, then she would give you only a little of her time. Little did she know that you preferred it when she gave you none of her time at all.
As soon as the door was completely closed and her heels clicked further down the hall, you buried your face in your hands. You didn’t know if you wanted to cry or break the throw the expensive teapot out of the window. The stinging in your chest grew to a malicious weight, making you feel like you were drowning. You already had so little control of your life. Now you were expected to give up your life to a man you didn’t know.
“Princess?” A deep yet soft voice called out. You looked up only to find Ghost sitting on the couch across from you. Lightning flashed from the window followed by a bellowing rumble. Your breath caught in your throat as he looked at you with a patient gaze. He wanted to say something, but he didn’t know what to say.
Actually, he knew exactly what he wanted to say. He wanted to go up to your mother and rip her a new one. It wasn’t like you were withering away from old age like your mother seemed to think. You were young, intelligent, skilled. For someone that dedicated your schedule on a regular basis, she sure didn’t know a thing about you. From what Ghost had seen from you in the past two weeks, you were very much capable of handling yourself or learning quickly how to.
Ghost could say a million things. The problem was that none of those words may be the right words you needed. Your world was different from his and he was still trying to figure it out. Saying what he wanted to say from his perspective may not have been appropriate or helpful to you.
Finally, you spoke up. Your tone was quiet and grave. “My apologies that you had to overhear that conversation. I shouldn’t be surprised that my parents are ready for me to marry. I just never expected that I would be the one having to do the impressing.”
You were right. Why should you be the one having to dance for this stranger? It should be him that should be trying to impress you. Ghost poured himself some tea, thinking about how backwards this all seemed. “You don’t know anything about this man, right? Your parents have never mentioned him before today?”
“No. They don’t usually say anything to me until events are just around the corner. I don’t have much of a social life outside of the palace walls either, so there wouldn’t be any way for me to really know this bachelor’s true character.” You began thinking more clearly, Ghost’s questions actually helping you approach this much more tactfully. It was like he was helping you come up with a plan.
“You don’t want to marry this guy or just in general?” He asked, his curiosity getting the better of him. It was a rather personal question, one that would have to be kept secret between the both of you.
You paused, thinking about his question very carefully. Once again, he was trying to get to know how you really felt about things. Ghost seemed to be the only one in the palace that genuinely wanted to know what you thought. After a sip of warm, slightly sweet tea, you gave him your truth.
A truth that a princess would give too. “I want to marry who I choose and I would choose out of love. I refuse to marry someone that I do not love. This potential bachelor. . . who is to say that I would not fall in love with him the moment I lay my eyes on him? Though, I do doubt this. I am unsure if I could trust his potential personality if the only people who could vouch for him are my parents. Their values in a partner may not reflect my own.”
Ghost has been getting better at deciphering your cryptic princess language. From what he understood, you didn’t reject the idea of marriage. You just wanted it to be out of your own choice of love. A reasonable answer. A bit romantic too. Like a true princess, you believed that love at first sight was possible. Ghost didn’t think he could agree with that. Though, your hint at valuing certain characteristics in a potential spouse piqued his interest in a way he couldn’t explain. “What do you value?”
For a moment, you looked out the window, another flash of lightning illuminating the rainy gray outside. As the light hit your features for a brief moment, Ghost felt his heart skip a beat. Now, you were giving a daydreaming, sweet smile. “I value courage, ambition, and openly high morals. Someone that isn’t afraid of pursuing their passions, satiating their curiosities appropriately, and standing up for what is right. Someone that I could grow alongside with their complete support. Someone that would not only see me as a lover, but as my own person too.”
He couldn’t help but feel his face grow a little warm as you described your ideal man. Though he couldn’t say he checked off all of those boxes, a part of him did feel like you were describing someone like him, even if you didn’t know it. At the very least, you obviously wanted someone that could put their money where their mouth was. Someone with bark and bite.
Not that he would actively pursue you. He lightly shook his head while you weren’t looking, ridding his thoughts of the idea of him being the perfect man for you. “It sounds like you know what you want.”
Those words gave you courage for some reason. Confidence. It surprised you to be filled with such confidence from that simple sentence alone. You looked towards Ghost, your breath hitching slightly as he stared at you with those blue eyes of his. “Yes, I do know what I want.”
“I’ll help you however I can, then. I’m going to run background checks on this guy. Checks on everyone that received an invite as well. I’ll make sure that you are only present at the party for strictly one hour. I still have my job to protect you, after all.” He promised you. If you couldn’t speak up against your parents due to decorum, then hopefully this would give you what you need to fight back instead.
“Thank you, Lieutenant Ghost. I truly do appreciate it.” You gratefully beamed. Who knew that when you were given a bodyguard that you would be given a friend as well.
~
The next few days were busy. While Ghost followed you around to your now tighter classes, he was also doing background checks on every single person that your parents sent an invite out to. Which was a lot. Jesus, when he saw the list of people he wanted to smack them both. It was incredibly dangerous for them to have so many people at the palace at once considering the threats against them and their daughter. It became clear that your parents were more concerned about protecting their public image or parading you around like a doll than about your true safety.
You felt that classes were a little easier to handle with Ghost being so focused on his laptop. Normally, he would be watching you carry on with your classes. Now that he was preoccupied with his own work, you felt less like you were giving a performance and like you were genuinely learning. Though, you did wish that he would look at you once you were finished with a successful new dance. For some reason, you craved some of his attention now that you had less of it.
Nights were different as well. While you had grown accustomed to talking yourself to sleep with Ghost listening to your every word, he had to focus on getting all the background checks complete. He also took it upon himself to tighten up some security detail. He was extremely busy making sure that you were safe, so it was hard to be upset with him. Yet, you still felt a bit lonely.
One night, you just couldn’t sleep. You laid awake for hours, trying to drift off to dreamland to no avail. Part of it was nerves over the upcoming party. Part of it was fear of being assassinated or kidnapped. Part of it was bundles of creative energy that needed to be released. You usually got it out of your system during independent study or piano, but now that it was gone for now, your fingers were itching to do something you wanted to do.
Quietly, you sat up in bed, listening carefully outside the door. You knew that Ghost usually spent his time guarding you out there. You wondered if he was still there or borrowing an office somewhere to complete his work. Either way, you wanted to be a little sneaky with or without him.
You opened the bedroom door a smidge, looking along the hallways to see if Ghost or anyone was up and around. Moonlight shined through the large windows, illuminating the halls brightly in a white light. You stepped out, now seeing Ghost situated at a small oak desk that was placed out in the hall for him right outside the door. His attention was already on you, having noticed the small opening of the door. “Couldn’t sleep?”
“I have too much energy.” You explained briefly, fearful that he may tell you to go back into your room. Thankfully, he seemed to understand.
“You usually sneak out in the middle of the night?” He teased, catching you off guard. You didn’t realize that Ghost could have such a playful tone.
“Sometimes, yes.” You answered honestly. Ghost was a little surprised by your answer. You were more defiant than you usually looked. Sneaking banned books, sneaking out of your bedroom at night. Not that you were doing anything bad. You just did what you could to explore your true interests.
Ghost closed his laptop and picked it up, ready to follow you to wherever you wished to go. “Where to then?”
Swiftly, you led him to a far part of the palace, a room that was far from your parent’s wing. Without alerting any palace staff, the both of you snuck into the room. In the middle of the room was a pure white grand piano. There were some shelves lined with books about music along with piano sheet music. There was a couch with a table as well, which would allow Ghost to continue working while you tired yourself out.
As you situated yourself in front of the piano, the lieutenant got himself all set up on the couch. For some reason, you were calm. Comfortable. You thought that you would be nervous with Ghost being your audience once more, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, you have never felt more secure than you did then. Even as you had the chance to play the music that you weren’t normally allowed to play.
You started up with warm-ups. Simple scales, listening to the tune of the piano. Feeling the weight of the pedals under your feet along with the weight of the keys under your fingertips. Ghost has grown familiar with that scale. He didn’t have any particular musical talent, yet he still appreciated it. The classics and simple songs you played were good.
As Ghost worked to the sound of your playing, the both of you fell into a comfortable groove. With your playing, Ghost felt more efficient in his work. You felt more confident in your abilities. Along with this, you began to branch out a little more, practicing classical songs that you were familiar with.
However, you played them. Truly. Not how your instructors guided you to play or how the sheet music dictated. No. You felt the emotions in each note. Each sound was played naturally as if it was second nature to you. Full of passion like the songs were intended to be played. Classical music that Ghost had admittedly grew bored of listening to just about every day, no matter how well you played, was now completely enthralled. Even songs he’s heard before meeting you seemed to breathe new life as you played with your heart rather than your head.
Before Ghost knew it, all of his attention was on watching and listening to you play. He saw how you closed your eyes, your fingers naturally finding each key without the use of sheet music. How you swayed as your hands moved. How you beautifully smiled to yourself as you heard the wonderful sounds your hands made.
It only got better when you began to play songs that weren’t of the classical variety. Songs that would have you banned from playing the piano in the palace. Hell, banned from music in general. There were some modern songs that Ghost recognized, now given your own flair. He didn’t even know how you knew some of those songs, but that didn’t matter.
You had talent. Real talent. A clear love for music and the piano.
An hour passed by of him neglecting his work just to watch you play. When you finished a final song, you were breathing heavily as if you had just worked out. Your heart was beating hard in your chest. Once you managed to catch your breath, Ghost spoke up, unable to remain just the silent audience. “Why don’t you play like that during classes? You only play the basics with your tutor.”
You nearly had forgotten that Ghost had been there. You weren’t even aware that he had been listening to you play the entire time. A blush spread across your cheeks as you grew bashful all of a sudden. “It is believed that I am slow at learning the piano. I don’t correct this assumption since I don’t want to be pressured to play even more songs that I don’t find much joy in. At least, not the way they want me to play. I. . . I also don’t want to give my parents another party trick that they can exploit.”
His fists clenched at the mention of your parents. With each passing day, he’s come to resent your parents more and more. How they treat you, control your life, and regard you like a pet rather than a daughter was making his blood simmer more each day. It was getting harder for him to hold his true opinions back. “You deserve more. You deserve to play whatever you want whenever you want.”
Your eyes grew wide at his open criticism. This was the first time he spoke his mind like this. Ghost was careful in his words just as you were up until this point. It was actually rather refreshing to hear him not hold back for once. “Thank you. I hope that I can someday get to that point.”
It felt like a wall between the both of you had crumbled down. As the moonlight fell upon your soft features, your optimism for the future bright in your eyes, Ghost felt himself choke up. This was you at your rebelliousness. You were a princess that snuck around in the night to enjoy forbidden knowledge. And he wanted to be part of that.
For a moment, he understood how people could fall in love at first sight.
You began to toy around with the piano again, this time playing a little more quietly and simpler so that Ghost could get back to work. While it was hard to focus on what he needed to do because he wanted to take in more of the beauty he was in the presence of, he managed to finish what he wanted to do for the night.
He finished his background check on this bachelor that your mother wanted you to marry. Ghost read everything that he could find on the guy. Net worth, news coverage, social media, and even criminal history. Kate was a massive help in finding more confidential information too. Everything was compiled into a report that he wrote himself. When it was done, he got up from the couch and sat down beside you on the piano bench.
“Would you like to hear the report?” He simply offered, not wanting to break your light playing.
With a nod, you prepared yourself for what Ghost found. He took a deep breath before reading. “Royal background. A duke. Only a couple of years older than you are. Owns a lot of land and has a lot of wealth-”
“I don’t care about any of that.” You interrupted, your tone suddenly a bit colder. As Ghost looked at you with slight shock, you turned your head away. He didn’t expect you to speak up like that. The fact that you did meant that you were getting more comfortable with him though. You were taking this seriously as well.
“What would you like to hear then, Princess?” He offered, giving you more control that you deserved.
When he spoke back to you so softly, you met his eyes once more. The piano bench was decently big, but Ghost was a big man. You could feel his body heat radiating off of him. As you looked up, you felt butterflies erupt in your stomach. The way he looked at you like you deserved the world made you feel lighter than air. When you gazed into his eyes, you felt like you could see his genuinity.
You trusted him. You trusted that he was an excellent judge of character as well. Much more than your own parents. “Based on the values that you know I am looking for, is he a good fit for me?”
Ghost bit his tongue hard, stopping his immediate response from escaping. He wanted to say no. Based on everything he read, this guy seemed stuck-up. Seedy. He had quite a few exes under his belt, not even counting just one-off flings. He didn’t have a criminal record or seemed to be dealing with anything particularly shady, but he did take advantage of his wealthy and royal status to experience certain things in life, regardless of how others may feel.
Then again, Ghost felt like his brain was foggy. Like he couldn’t really make a fair judgment because he wanted to reject him immediately. He had a bias against him. Where it came from exactly, he wasn’t sure. All he knew was that he didn’t trust him to be the one for you. He didn’t want you anywhere near him either.
For now, he decided to be earnest yet nice. “I don’t think he would be a good match based on his track records, but who’s to say that he isn’t better in person. You’ll have an hour to judge him at the very least.”
Your heart fell as you heard his answer. It wasn’t that you were disappointed over this stranger probably not being the best for you. No. You were disappointed that Ghost wasn’t more blunt with what he thought. You appreciated how he was trying to preserve your feelings, but you didn’t want that right now. You wished that he could protest some more, any excuse not to meet this stranger and play into the hands of your parents.
As he saw the flash of anguish on your face, Ghost felt his heart break. He could tell that you were really hesitant about this man. You didn’t even want to meet him if you had the choice. Without thinking, he took up your hands and squeezed. His hand was so much bigger than yours. Rougher, sturdier. Hands that have done things that you would never be able to fully comprehend. And now, they were holding yours.
“One hour. That’s all. However, if you tell me that you hate him, even within the first second of seeing him, I’ll make sure that he won’t even get to touch you.” His tone was resolute, unwavering.
As he put the control back in your hands, you squeezed his hands right back. Your heart swelled again as if on a rollercoaster. The moonlight cutting across the skull mask you have gotten used to only to brighten his deep, blue eyes made you melt. “Thank you, Lieutenant.”

Love so Criminal ✧
Tumblr media
Yessir !!
TW :: Usual yandere + Dark Content, read at your own choice !! And me obviously having favorites.. 😭😭
Left out Kazui cause bro is confusing me
HARUKA ::
Jishou-Gata ♡ Self harm Type
Everyone knows that Haruka is deadly in love with you
But oh, he'd rather decapitate himself then give you his head then cause you any harm
You heal him. You give him everything he's ever wanted.
Can you blame him ? Cause when you're not around, he just can't help but feel so sick.
But no, every time he insists he isn't feeling well, he'd much rather go to you than Dr. Kirisaki.
Every time he has a cut, or bruise, minor or serious, he goes to you.
You wouldn't leave him, not while he's so sick and injured, right ?
He'll make sure that if you leave him, you'll be destroyed by a guilt that you just left him in such a horrible state.
He'll eat at you, he'll make sure that when you leave, you won't have to turn back cause everytime you close you're eyes, you'll see his weak figure begging for help.
That is, unless you just stay. Wouldn't you love that ?
FUUTA ::
Sutookaa-Gata ♡ Stalker Type
He's skilled with his online capabilities; It shouldn't be a shock that he'd find you so easily.
When you talk to him, he's absolutely perfect !
He has morals you agree with, and is mostly interested in the things you are into
He can do things that you find admirable in a guy, it's like he was made for you.
What you don't know won't hurt you.
Just don't find out !
Don't find out that for months, he's been stalking your socials, accounts that you've made sure no one would find out about.
Your Tumblr account ? Yup ! He's looked through all of your liked fanfics~
He's really just the perfect guy, he's straight out of a novel.
Hell, he's probably seeing this as you read it ! He's taking notes.
You can't leave, he'll go wherever you go.
He has a tab of your 3d house layout on Zillow, a tab of a video camera from the plushie he got you.
A plushie that just so happens to be your favorite character-- How'd he know ?
A tab of your favorite fanfics, a tab of your likes and dislikes, a tab of your normal routines;
You'll never get away.
He knows so much.
You'll be on your normal walk, and you bump into Fuuta.
There's a new student in your class, it's Fuuta.
You'll go to your favorite cafe to get a break from him, and what do you know ?
The new worker is Fuuta.
SHIDOU ::
Mugai-Gata ♡ Harmless Type
He doesn't view himself as worthy for much, let alone you.
So even though his heart feels as if it might just explode when he sees you without him, he won't bring himself to try and steal yours.
Every small interaction counts ;
Smiling at him,
Telling Es you find him innocent,
Smoking on break with him,
Or on the contrary, scolding him about how he should smoke,
It all makes him feel all the more sick.
He's undeserving of scolding, undeserving of your company, undeserving of Innocence, undeserving of your smile, undeserving of you.
So it's okay, light him up in flames and smile at someone else.
He won't stop you, how could he ?
MIKOTO ::
Haijo-Gata ♡ Removal Type
Let me just start this out with,
You'll never escape Mikoto.
If you don't love him, fuck it, he'll just beat you to death and keep your corpse as a sweet memory.
You looked at another guy ?
Why don't you look at his guts being spilled ?
You did this to yourself.
You captured Mikoto first, with just a sweet gaze, you destroyed any self control he had when it came to you.
He didn't understand it. He hates how you've gotten him so easily, and yet, that sick, burning feeling of hate, makes him love you.
You'll have no choice but to come back to him.
He'll kill all your friends, he'll kill your family, he'll kill anyone you thought you could go to.
The pain will be much more bearable if you just stay with him.
Stay with him, and he might just not kill you.

Shining Force Pre Release Coverage
yes i have made a post about this before but i was a baby with one magazine. Now i’m a big 90s kid who has gone through the entirety of the Beep Megadrive archives from 1991-1994, as one does. Get ready for what might be my biggest post ever, I don’t wanna break it into parts for the timeline vibe.
To contextualize the following dates: the game came out in Japan on March 1992.
October 1991
Tumblr media
More cool sword animations for Max. Also it took me way too long to realize this background is also not anywhere in the final game, though the final Gate of the Ancients bg does take a lot from it. Apparently it was once meant to be an indoor location with torches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are screenshots of the map itself. Icons were completely different, and Gort and Mae are there. Obviously this could be just the use of debug features to test the characters, but I suspect their story roles were actually changed and they were meant to be starting characters. More on that later.
Tumblr media
there’s also a screenshot of Guardiana with a slightly different layout. There are centaur NPCs in town as opposed to only in the castle, the old man sprite is different, and the little girls are normal as opposed to dragging cats around. In the final version, this little girl sprite is only for Karin, Krin and Koron, the important little girl trio. The bed sprites are also different and kinda failing at perspective.
Besides screenshots, we also get a synopsis.
Tumblr media
Centuries before Mephisto’s uprising in Shining in the Darkness... In the continent of Rune, far to the east of Thornwood, many countries big and small lived in endless days of peace. However, the great nation of Rune Faust, wanting to take over all of Rune, plotted to get its hands on the “Legacy of the Gods” inherited by the country of Guardiana since ancient times.
The Legacy of the Gods is said to be both a superweapon and a frightening beast. Whoever attains it can become a god or a devil... But even though the Rune Faust army has invaded Guardiana and ravaged the country for its plans of domination, it hasn’t succeed in finding the legacy...
Meanwhile, the soldiers of Guardiana, forced into a life of wandering after the fall of their country, have risen to the task of defeating Rune Faust. And as they resist against the unknown evil power controlling Rune Faust, people have come to call them “the forces of light”, Shining Force...
The grassy plains of Guardiana, mountains full of precipices, jungles, deadly deserts, rivers where piranhas live, those and other stages await our heroes.
After all, who is the one controlling the powers of darkness? And what is the truth behind the Legacy of the Gods? Hiding many mysteries, a new legend begins now!!
Very basic stuff, but while it might just the drama vibes, it does feel that Guardiana was supposed to get more wrecked, or get wrecked earlier, which would explain Mae and Gort joining earlier as well. Simone narrating the king’s last wishes right in the intro supports that idea as well.
Lastly, we get some character art and info:
Tumblr media
(i know it’s hard to see the og text with this resize but hey, that’s why I linked the magazine collection before)
These are the forces of light, “Shining Force”!
“I’m the swordsman protagonist, Max!”
The protagonist of this story, Max. He’s human, but is an expert with the sword and can also use magic. He roams across the continent, leading the Shining Force in its way to defeat Runefaust.
One more for the “Max was meant to have magic” pile.
Archer - Hans
An elf who used to work at Guardiana’s palace. His skill with the bow is first-class.
Very nitpicky detail: Hans’ class is written with kanji here, when it’s written in katakana in the final version.
Knight - Mae
A young centaur warrior. Daughter of the late Knight Captain.
Priest - Lowe
A dwarf who’s a great friend of Max. Currently training at magic.
Shining in the Darkness already had a hobbit priest so i wonder if there’s some miscommunication here. The hobbit discourse is even older than I’d imagined.
Warrior - Gort
A hotblooded dwarf old man and Mae’s servant.
Told you there were changes on these two. There’s no indication of any connection between the two in the final version, especially since centaurs tend to be arrogant towards other races, a fact that does not come up here at all, nor does Mae’s tough personality. Even more evidence will come up later that those things were added late in development.
Knight - Ken
A centaur in knight who admires Max.
The enemies don’t get descriptions and all have their final names except the Rune Knight, who is only Centaur Knight at this point.
November 1991
This is a big one. The beta title screen is the least interesting thing about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see more of Guardiana, and the centaur NPC was actually Varios all along, meaning the intro was really different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max and Mae get to smile! Given the story is kinda obvious why this was changed, but I always did find it weird that their artwork had different expressions to begin with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plenty of screenshots of a field battle with completely different graphics. More on this later.
Tumblr media
Also a different and apparently pretty big shop.
But now for the part that really rocked my socks, a whole beta map:
Tumblr media
Here’s the final map so you can compare the geography yourself. This map doesn’t label pretty much any town and instead brings up a bunch of new names for the natural areas.
The Gate of the Ancients, or what I suppose is it, it’s not labelled, sits atop the Mountain of Guidance, which seems to be a single mountain as opposed to the big mass that stretches up to Rindo in the final version. The gate also seems drawn like a little castle, which would explain the indoor bgs shown so far.
Alterone is to the northwest of Guardiana as opposed to the northeast. It is also right next to the Beagle Mountain Mass, which, makes A Lot More Sense with how much we hear it is a mining town. I’ve been wondering where their mines were in the final map. They must have mined too much though, because in the final version this mountain mass is largely gone.
Further to the north is Rindo Harbor, and you, english speaker, might think, “oh yes Rindo that’s the final name” but nope, in the JP version the town’s name is Rindorindo, for some reason, so that’s a difference. A difference that matters to no one.
There’s no river near Rindo, and Manarina and Shade are not labelled, though its concepts seem to be around. Manarina also seems to be surrounded by a lot more forest than in the final version, which might explain its guide book entry.
The forest near Manarina has a name that deserves its own post, Kaien, in katakana so that it is harder to discerning its meaning of course (and intentionally allow double meanings). Possible interpretations are the start of a performance (開演), the opening of a park or garden or banquet (開園 and 開宴), a superb performance (快演), or an eerie yet fascinating performance (怪演). I’d say the last one is the most fitting for Manarina, but localizing it is still a pain in the ass, the english staff dodged a bullet here. Right now most I can think of is Enthralling Forest, but you still miss some charm.
I also have to wonder if Mishaela was conceived as a boss for this place. Puppet performance and all that. She also ends up having a forest stage in Shining Soul.
All the white mass on the north is Pao Plains, no sign of the bridge or the forests of Bustoke, although there is a town in the mountains. Was this a Shining Force without Zylo? Inconceivable. But might confirm something I’ve been suspecting due to my debug mode escapades. In the battle test mode, egress usually takes you to the last church you’re supposed to access in that chapter. Yet for chapter 2 battles, it takes you to Bustoke, which is on Chapter 3. The editor also shows Bustoke as one of the first map in the data, between Rindo and Shade. It is likely that Bustoke was meant for Chapter 2.
In fact the reasoning for going to Shade Abbey is very shaky, you can see in the final map that there’s a lot more mountains between Shade and Bustoke than from Manarina. I guess the point is that guides work there, but in that ase they should work somewhere else. I’m not complaining though since Shade Abbey is one of the most iconic parts of the game.
The Pao Plains are surrounded by the Boho Mountain Range. Boho is short for bohemian, the romanticized view of nomadic/alternative lifestyles, so it’s very fitting for Pao.
Waral was a single island instead of an archipelago, and the ocean between the two sides of Rune is Cypro Ocean, a name that eventually made its way to the guide book. The region in the center of East Rune is Conga Basin, which we’ve also seen in another book, and Dragonia is to the north already. Finally, the Crescent Mountain Range is the bunch of mountains to the east of Runefaust.
Note also the big isolated structure south of Runefaust. Perhaps the Castle of the Ancients has not always been under the ocean. I also see no sign of Prompt, while all other towns are in (except Waral but Waral isn’t even in the final map, it’s tiny). This might explain why Chapter 7 is cursed on debug mode, frequently failing to load an egress point.
All this rambling was just for the map itself. There’s more written about it, I’ll just translate things directly because I’m a bit tired of taking screenshots.
This is the Rune Continent where Shining Force will take place
There’s no comparison between the world of Shining Force with that of Shining in the Darkness, it is far larger. There are mountain ranges, towns, large coasts, and even islands as well. The adventure starts at Guardiana to the south of West Rune, and the you’ll move clockwise to north, and then to the eastern part of continent, shrouded in mystery. That region to the south of East Rune, could it be Runefaust...?
East Rune and West Rune
The two continents and the Cypro Ocean between them are all referred to as the Rune continent, and are far to the east of the land where one day Thornwood, the kingdom where SitD takes place, will be built.
Guardiana, where the journey begins, is on West Rune. West Rune, compared to the eastern side, is more developed, with many countries living in peace and abundance.
In the eastern side, it is said an ancient civilization once lived there, but currently there are no countries other than Runefaust, and a wide spread of steep mountains and eerie forests.
Because of that and Runefaust itself, the people of West Rune regard the east as a dark land full of mystery.
They’ve thankfully chilled a bit on the “light side versus dark side” in the final game, possibly because they needed churches/HQs/shops to welcome the heroes gameplay-wise. I do see something drawn in the map here where Rudo should be, so perhaps other settlements in the east were already in the cards, just not very developed.
The country of Alterone
A neighboring country of Guardiana. It was originally a mining town built to extract rare and magical minerals from the Beagle Mountain Range around it, and then developed into a country. With the minerals excavated, Alterone amassed a lot of money, which was used for its own development. The common citizens began to live in luxury, and even despite other countries. Of course the royal family too has filled the castle with loads of luxury items and art, and the army is small and lacks zeal despite its extravagant equipment. The cultural level of these people with not much history, is not very great. A rising rich country. One could argue it’s a bit like today’s Japan with its excessive liquidity, or maybe not?
oh i am unequipped in so many ways to understand that jab
The country of Guardiana
A country that prides itself in having the deepest history in all of West Rune. It is said this country was built by people who inherited the duty of protecting the “Legacy of the Gods”. Because of that they’ve grow a tradition of respect for the military arts, and the royal family believes in maintaining a humble lifestyle, so the castle has no ornaments or luxurious items. However the long time of peace has weakened these traditions and the people, and they could not defend themselves from Runefaust’s ambitions, being destroyed...
Being a small country, it has little stock of weapons and such, but it is blessed with fertile land and the agricultural production is plentiful. The story of the Shining Force will somehow begin around this country.
Nothing I hadn’t seen in guide books already, but I’m somewhat surprised the worldbuilding was all already there and not refined for the guide books only. I guess it just didn’t find its place in game.
Speaking of that, here’s a long interview with the devs and I don’t have the energy to translate it all. Here’s the summary:
Unsurprisingly, the game’s biggest challenge was data size. Without compression it was around 30MB, around 15x the size of its final ROM, and definitely not fitting a Mega Drive cartridge. The interview only talks about compression but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to cut things as well.
It’s brought up that they could have solved that problem by making a CD game instead, but they wanted to reach a wider audience.
Lots of comparisons with SitD, how the game was bigger and more complex, requiring more work and graphics and maps and everything basically. Again it is said that the story happen centuries before SitD.
When asked if there's a connection with the SitD, Masaki Wachi (writer for SF and the GBA remake) enthusiastically replies “Yes! Oops, I said it (laughs)”. He then elaborates that there were big clues about it, but that he wouldn’t comment on the connection with Mephisto and the ending of SitD.
Kenji Orimo (director and writer) does add though that if it was meant to be a direct sequel, it would just be called Darkness II. He also mentions seeing more potential in expanding the Shining World from Force than from Darkness.
Yoshitaka Tamaki (character designer, art director) mentions SitD characters having more of a fairy tale vibe, while SF characters were more grounded, with some pretty scary enemies in the late game, with more of a “war spectacle” vibe.
Lots of hyping up the battle animations.
Also hyping up the unique spin on tactical games, where characters and enemies all have their own agility instead of just alternating between an ally and an enemy phase. I don’t know anything about tactical games to comment on this.
December 1991
We get a better scan of Mae’s old portrait :)
Tumblr media
Max on the other hand has already changed to his final one. Character description are largely the same as October with a few more tidbits on personalities such as Ken being a super honest boy. Gort is still referred to as Mae’s old servant, Lowe is still listed as dwarf, and no mention of Mae’s tough personality yet. Max’s class is also listed as warrior, but he was mentioned as swordsman on October so I assume it’s just a mistake.
We do get more characters this time though.
Tumblr media
Tao Class: Mage Species: Forest Elf
A mage in training, but her talent is huge. Has a close relationship with Anri, the princess of Guardiana.
The forest elf thing is very curious since Hans and Diane are not listed as such. I have seen the term float around for Nigel of Landstalker, but I didn’t play that yet so no comment.
Diane Class: Archer Species: Elf
A wild girl who lives in Bustoke. Being raised in the mountains, she’s vigorous in battle. Scary.
Zylo Class: Werewolf Species: Beastman
Leader of Bustoke, the mountain nation. Focused in hand-to-hand combat, he does not equip weapons, and instead fights with his sharp claws.
Guntz Class: Steam Knight Species: Beastman
A knight of heavy power who wears an armor powered by a steam engine. Well known through the world as a mercenary specialized in castle assaults.
Well, that’s not my chill guy. Seems his personality wasn’t nailed down yet, which surprises me as his artwork very much implies the gentle guy we know now. Worth mentioning though, Guntz does join the team right as you’re going to assault the fort, and the GBA version even elaborates a bit on that invasion by requiring you pick a bomb from Crock, though Guntz isn’t involved in any of that. Perhaps this sequence was intended to be a bit more elaborate from the start.
Khris Class: Priest Species: Cantaul
A priest who used to work in Alterone. Despite being both priests, she’s stronger than Lowe in battle. Let’s see who is the best at magic.
Kokichi Class: Wing Knight Species: Human
An old gramps from a noble lineage of knights. Entranced by the dream of flying, he spent fifty years researching flying machines.
We then get a bunch of monster art i won’t even try to fit in a screenshot, and more description than they ever got in guide books as far as I’ve seen.
Dwarves
Skilled at close combat due to their strong body, but has low defense. Their lethal axes are menacing.
Dark Priests
Runefaust priests, wearing white masks as per the army’s regulations. Working on an attack with focused magic.
rip dark priests you did not learn blast in time if that’s what they’re implying here
Also, they’re called Dark Priests here, Priests in the final game, and Dark Priests in the english localization. I don’t know why I bother paying attention to that.
Snipers
With superior footwork, they attack from a long range with bows. The double team kind, working as pairs with the Rune Knights.
Puppets
Evil marionettes, it’s unknown if they have consciousness. Part of the Monster Corps, they attack swinging swords.
Except they don’t in the final game. They don’t even have swords in the art either, so I’m unsure if that’s a change or an idea that never made it in.
Hell Pierrot
It seems they are not really pierrot, just disguise as such. Those who are fooled and approach them carelessly end up hurt.
That’s the final JP name for the Dire Clown as well.
Gargoyles
They are statues, but had temporary life breathed into them by magic. Seems not all of them turned into flesh, some parts remain stone.
Cerberos
Guard dogs of hell into a deep sleep in the caves under Alterone. Trained by the Runefaust army.
Worms
Giant mutant earthworms dozens of meters long. Don’t have any senses other than touch.
Dullahans
Headless ghost knights who used to be Rune Knights. No comparison between their power though.
And now a special boy that does get to be screenshotted:
Tumblr media
Mimics
Transform immediately as you open them thinking it’s a chest. Their lids grow sharp fangs, and they sprout legs to move.
It’s worth noting that while these guys didn’t make it to any classic game, SF2 does have a mechanic of monsters spawning from chests, we just don’t get to see because the search in battle option was removed in the english version.
To finish the parade of weird creatures, Yogurt is here.
Tumblr media
What is this Yogurt creature, after all?
Yogurt, a mysterious characters that shows up around Guardiana and toys with the enemies. No clue if he’s an enemy or an ally, but he certainly has a likeable vibe, you could even call him cute. He’s not docile enough to be raised as a pet, and seems prone to quick mood swings. Does a lot of weird things as he pops up in the adventure. You could say he’s kind of a versatile performer.
Yogurt’s Data
He’s 80 cm tall, weights 10 kg, walks on two feet, while the front paws have atrophied and become small. His main food seems to be berries, but he’s omnivorous. From what’s been observed, he can swim, is fast and has strong jumps. It’s unknown when he started wearing the helmet on his head. No one has seen him take it off either.
Insides:
Tail - Uses it to balance while walking in two feet.
Feet - Way better for jumping than for walking.
Head - On par with humans. Seems to be very intelligent.
Hands - Cannot use tools
Belly - Quite fat but he’s still agile.
There are also doodles of his secret appearances which I’m not gonna translate now. They’re very much just describing his antics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
January 1992
Pink haired Simone appears. Sadly there’s no dialogue screenshots.
Tumblr media
Guardiana is already pretty much the final version, only the entrance still seems unfinished, some NPCs are different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember that field battle with different graphics? There’s more of it here, including the map.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s horrifyingly large.
Tumblr media
Finally, there’s some talk of critical hits being capable of special effects like one-hit KO, but it’s very vague so it might be the magazine staff not knowing this was attached to a specific weapon.
February 1992
Pink Simone is still around, and so are unfinished weapon animations and the old knight battle sprites. Max still shows up with zero MP. Guardiana and the starting maps seems mostly finished with a couple odd spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guardiana castle is full of chickens, and has a gate.
Tumblr media
The king’s room has a couple more flags in it.
Tumblr media
The Gate of the Ancients now looks like the final version, though battle screenshots still show the indoor background. The starting team is also the final one, with Mae and Gort no longer there.
Tumblr media
The Alterone battle shows enemies inside the shops.
Tumblr media
The article ends with a recipe for yogurt.
March 1992
The game is released, and I too am released from this long ass post. From here on, every article, ad and official material I’ve seen uses only screenshots from the final version of the game. If that sounds obvious to you, wait for the SF2 post.
Update: ??? 1992
Joke’s on me, I was not free from the post. I found some old footage, sadly i don’t know which date it is from, but it shouldn’t be too early in production. Simone already has brown hair, the Gate of the Ancients is already outdoors.
There are still things to note though. Simone still talks of the king of Guardiana in her intro as opposed to the final one. The intro to Chapter 1 is a placeholder text.
Tumblr media
Anri’s dad does not have a unique portrait and uses the default king one. Also, the castle still do not have centaur knights, even though their sprite already exists. In the place are not chickens though, and instead some weird placeholders you can see at the top right corner here.
Unlike every other battle scene in this post, the final sword sprites are in, but their animation for Max is still unfinished. Also, having footage we can hear some audio, and while Simone’s theme and the field map theme are in, the town and battle scenes use placeholders from SitD
More importantly,
Tumblr media
cat.
Tumblr media
Their sprite isn’t exactly the same as the unused ones in the ROM though, as those have the tail up like a properly happy cat. This means these sprites still got further polish before being ultimately scrapped anyway :(

[Review] Sing Me To Sleep
Tumblr media
Author: Gabi Burton
Synopsis: In this dark and seductive YA fantasy debut, a siren must choose between protecting her family and following her heart in a prejudiced kingdom where her existence is illegal.
Saoirse Sorkova survives on lies. As a soldier-in-training at the most prestigious barracks in the kingdom, she lies about being a siren to avoid execution. At night, working as an assassin for a dangerous group of mercenaries, Saoirse lies about her true identity. And to her family, Saoirse tells the biggest lie of all: that she can control her siren powers and doesn't struggle constantly against an impulse to kill.
As the top trainee in her class, Saoirse would be headed for a bright future if it weren't for the need to keep her secrets out of the spotlight. But when a mysterious blackmailer threatens her sister, Saoirse takes a dangerous job that will help her investigate: she becomes personal bodyguard to the crown prince.
Saoirse should hate Prince Hayes. After all, his father is the one who enforces the kingdom's brutal creature segregation laws. But when Hayes turns out to be kind, thoughtful, and charming, Saoirse finds herself increasingly drawn to him-especially when they're forced to work together to stop a deadly killer who's plaguing the city. There's only one problem: Saoirse is that deadly killer.
Featuring an all Black and Brown cast, a forbidden romance, and a compulsively dark plot full of twists, this thrilling YA fantasy is perfect for fans of A Song Below Water and To Kill a Kingdom.
Tumblr media
Spoilers ahead!
Sing Me to Sleep is a phenomenal debut novel and it's the first part of a duology book series.
What I Liked:
Saoirse the heroine of the story is a morally gray assassin and siren. She's clever and it was fun and entertaining following her along on her journey.
By further extension, the rest of the cast of characters this novel has to offer are fantastic in their own right. From Prince Hayes and his other guards, etc.
The world-building is great as well there's a handy map in the front of the book that helps to illustrate the layout of Keirdre. Fae, witches, and humans populate Keirdre.
The romance between Saoirse and Prince Hayes the tension between them and the push and pull was great. The relationship between the two of them is also layered and complex.
What I Disliked:
At the beginning of the book, there's a lot of information dumped on you and at first, it's a lot to take in all at once but eventually, it becomes more digestible.
The only other hiccup that I can think of when it comes to this novel is Carrik Solwey. He's Saoirse's half-human half-water fae friend from the barracks, and it's ultimately revealed that he's working with the Resistance. He's the one who slipped the letter into Rain's Saoirse's sister's bag and was essentially blackmailing her throughout the story. However, after going out of his way to make sure that Saoirse wouldn't find out it was him, he still wears items that would be a dead giveaway to his identity and that Saoirse would instantly recognize.
Recommend: I highly recommend this book I couldn't put it down and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

LAYOUT OF THE LAND
Tumblr media
The world of The Ever Young is vast and wide. The whole world is bordered by thick forests that, while once vibrant, green, and pleasant in the way they never seemed to end, are now dark and full of shadows and are so called The Shadowlands. Rumors say that they’re filled with unpleasant tricks and traps and inhabited by creatures the likes of which would make your nightmare monsters seem like kittens. People tend to avoid these forests out of fear now, especially given all the talk of people disappearing into them, never to return, or of getting too close to them and then being abducted by whatever beings now reside within them.
All the regions lay around The Heart. The Heart is neutral territory, where violence is prohibited and while many of its shops are now run-down or boarded up, it’s the main hub of the world’s shopping, with various stores and open-air markets. Over the past little while, there’s also been whispers that down some of the seedier alleyways, you can know buy magical elixirs and drugs, possessed but deadly accurate weapons, and even people…or parts of them, if that’s your style. While it was once beautiful, full of busy crowds along the cobblestone streets, with vast parks and colourful buildings, it’s now got the air of a place that’s seen far better days. The one defining feature of The Heart is a large castle-like building at the center of The Heart, where, if rumours are to be believed, the Benevolent Witch once lived and conducted not only all her political business in, but in which she threw grand celebrations and parties for all the people.
Throughout the entirety of the world also runs The Lethe, a large river spanning from one end of the world to the next, running straight center through The Heart. It branches off into various smaller streams and brooks throughout each region.
The fourteen different regions lay side by side with each other, making a giant circle around The Heart, sectioned off in slivers that run clockwise.
The first region, Wedergebore, runs true north from The Heart. Inhabited by the Hadia, it’s one of the largest regions. It looks very much like a large town, though one with a large class divide, with the fancy, privileged towards one end of town and the run-down slums on the other. There is lots of green space and playgrounds, in varying states of disrepair depending on where you are in Wedergebore. Its notable features include a large river running serpentine through it, a large temple shrine almost in the middle, and the wreckage of an old zoo, left to rot, towards the slums. That, combined with an almost fortress-like series of mansions on the privileged end of town make up all major landmarks. Its borders are well-protected and guarded night and day by patrols, who camp in small towers set all along the borders.
The second region sits slightly east of Wedergebore. Dubbed Raymyuut, it’s inhabited by the Strains. It looks like a modern city, to be honest. Tall buildings packed close together, lots of little run-down shops that never approach the variety of those in The Heart, with a large pond almost cutting the north and south parts of Raymyuut off from each other, with only a narrow, swinging suspension bridge to keep the two connected. In the north, the largest landmark is that of an oft frequented, large two-story building, with a beautiful bar inhabiting the first floor. On the south side of Raymyuut stands a series of interconnecting camps, with a large lodge joining them all together. To the north, their borders have magical protections, with a  wall of fire showing where their property begins, as a means of avoiding intruders. To the south, the borders are less magically focused, and patrols are done regularly by volunteers from the camp.
The third region, Nanba, is inhabited by the Isidenge. A region living within thick border walls, the streets are labyrinthine, the buildings small and sparse or built into caves. The land itself is craggy and mountainous and can be dangerous for those unfamiliar with the landscape. Other than the border walls, encompassing everything in the region, and a large grouping of houses at the highest peak of the mountain, it has few definable features and doesn’t rely on anything other than the walls and magical security devices to patrol.
The fourth region, Knekht, is inhabited by the Vampir. With it bordering the mountainous Nanba, it quite resembles a deep valley. While the town at the bottom of the valley is well taken care of, to the best it can be, with a few scattered shops and a large building used as a combination of school and community center being its only large feature. However, it’s also notable for being one of the darkest regions and often gets more rain than anywhere else seems to. They leave their borders unprotected, to avoid having to climb the mountain on one side and the steep hills out of the valley on the other.
The fifth region, Togenkyo is occupied by the Paidui. It’s a large region, with lots of straight roads and very few actual occupied areas. With a dwindling population, it’s the least populated of the regions, so other than the occasional bar, which may or may not still be operating, or the infrequent food shop, it has little to make it special or to make it feel less bleak. Even the once beautiful nature has run wild, growing heavily in the wake of rainy, hot seasons that can seem to go on forever. There are many, many churches and temples, almost a disproportionate amount compared to actual homes, though, and it’s these churches and temples that take it upon themselves to magically protect the borders.
The sixth region, Menta, is occupied by the Ochju. Almost too small to even be considered much of a threat, Menta is a gray, bleak place. The buildings, the roads and buildings all paved or made of stones, the gray sky overhead…all just a very bleak and depressing place. It wasn’t always that way but when things started going really bad, the Han company started reinforcing every surface with stone as protection and the once vibrant, colourful city became a cold, depressing place, with only a large complex of beautifully crafted stone buildings, made from local river rocks and mud, being the only beauty left to find in Menta.
The seventh region runs true south of The Heart. Dubbed Cradle, it’s occupied by the Lulilo. Honestly, it’s the quintessential Victorian picturesque village, though it’s a very divided one, with the main residential area tucked into the center of Cradle. From there, Cradle spreads out on opposite sides. One side has a dominating black series of buildings that look very military-esque in appearance, but it also has more parks, flower gardens, and quaint little family-owned shops. The other side has a small white castle, a rose garden, fancier shops and a patisserie that is quite renowned and a man-made pond that houses a family of ducks and the legendary golden goose.
The eighth region sits just west of Cradle. Called Porto, it’s occupied by the Gremio. It’s main defining feature is that it’s right alongside The Lethe. Close to the water, the buildings are bright and colourful but very run-down, with lots of small groupings of warehouses and factories. As you move further from the water, it still retains the sense of a small fishing town very much, with the buildings being modest, seafood being plentiful, and an almost constant fog swirling around the town. The fog and the fact that Porto is almost only accessible via The Lethe make it a well-protected place though.
The ninth region, Pilut, is occupied by the Anatawi. Pilut is a lush, green place, with the forests tending to spread out quite far. Though there are plenty of wide green fields and little copses of trees, along with a rather vast system of tiny streams and brooks, it does have a fair number of citizens and there is a pretty sizeable town, though it is a very spread out one, with each part of town having been built at a different time, so the styles throughout look nothing alike, in an almost disorienting way. It is heavily guarded though, with deep trenches along the borders and sentries posted at the four bridges that lead away from Pilut – one to The Heart, one to The Lethe (where it borders on Porto), one to The Gold, and one to The Shadowlands.
The tenth region is called The Gold and is occupied by the Grijara. The weather in The Gold always seems to be hot, even when it shouldn’t be and its small size and lack of any sizeable bodies of water means that The Gold tends to be a hot, dry, dusty place. All rocks and dirt, the town doesn’t have much green to it, with very little trees for shade. It’s known for being a tough region to make  home but those that do live there do their best to make it as decent a place as they can and there are some small shops, a little restaurant, and a one-room schoolhouse. That being said, The Gold also suffers from a  large class division, and it’s not too surprising to see people camping out in tents in large vacant lots or for food to go missing from those small shops or even the school quite frequently, along with other various crimes, and the town is far too busy dealing with those crimes to really watch their borders, making them an easy target for anyone hoping to target them, or simply for people trying to stay off the radar as they pass through to somewhere else.
The eleventh region is called Tewagi, occupied by the Gudari. The most defining feature is definitely its unique architecture. It has a very ‘feudal Japanese’ feel to it and it is a rather large region land wise, though it’s not heavily populated. The region is known for its unique look and style, its hot springs, and the fact that martial and sword arts are taken very seriously in the region, and it is where all those truly dedicated to learning the skills try to come, in order to learn from the best at one of the many dojos in the region. Having so many citizens who are skilled in those arts, is it any wonder that, despite relying heavily on their fearsome reputation to keep their borders safe, they do regular patrols to ensure the safety and security of their borders and are known to not be merciful to those caught trying to cross the borders illegally.
The twelfth region, oddly named Honky Tonk, and occupied by the Rikthimi is…interesting. An incredibly tiny city, it most closely resembles a junk yard or a dump. And in some ways it is. The borders aren’t closely guarded, though it’s always known when someone new does come in, due to the abilities of someone high up in the food chain in Honky Tonk. To be honest, Honky Tonk tends to be where all the trash gathers, both from other regions and those who didn’t fit anywhere else. The most notable feature is the tall, jagged, almost gravity defying mess of metal and stone that makes up a tower that can be seen from both neighboring regions, a tower that houses all the occupants of Honky Tonk among its many levels.
The thirteenth region, Olympus, is home to the Gaians. The most affluent region is well known for the fact that, from border to border, it is comprised of thick, solid, white stone walls that make up the outer security buildings. Within that are the various other buildings that make up a region entirely dedicated to the world’s only ‘university’, I guess you could call it. Run by the world’s best minds, those interested in history, in magic, in the how’s and whys can go to learn and to put their curious minds to work to help to build the glory of Olympus itself. It’s said that those naturally drawn into choosing Olympus as their region of residence, when the world split, have magical knowledge and power greater than anyone else in all of The Ever Young.
The fourteenth and last region, just west of Wedergebore, is called Rumiany. Occupied by the Gorritu, landscape, defining features, and borders. If you like your town with a little bit of poison, Rumiany is the place for you. Full of seedy dive bars, with streets where you try your best to stay out of people’s ways and not touch anything, full of taverns and inns that charge you hourly rates, Rumiany is a place where only the strong or sly survive. The slave trade and prostitution run rampant through the region, as do drugs and alcohol, splashed up front in center to those around, as if they are things to be celebrated instead of shamed about. Their borders are the least protected but honestly…if you can manage to invade Rumiany and then survive its streets, they figure you might just belong there anyway.

A character for a Harry Potter character = Muggleborn Wizard that points out how stupid the wizarding world can be
I thought of this a while back and i have this concept of a Muggleborn kid learning about the wizarding world and just being like
"Oh cool- Bro what is that? Is that a fucking quill your writing with??"
"What is this castle layout- WHO MADE THE GODDAMN STAIRS MOVE!?"
"You use spells to pack your bags? You are all incredibly lazy you know that."
"What are these subjects?? What is this useful for and why arent there any classes like idk, english or math? And why is school only 7 years with no further education??? WHAT IS THIS SCHOOL SYSTEM?!"
"WHY IS THIS SCHOOL NEXT TO A DEADLY FOREST???"
"Oh yeah sure you seperate 11 year Olds based on shallow traits into boxes they will spend their most important formative years, pffff who would do tha- Wait your not joking???"
And stuff like that

The application displays your entire quest and goals, as well as'marching ants linking the two. It will also show which jobs need items that you've banked (in white) as well as those that require things you don't possess (in RED). You can also show the screen of a specific objective to other players via the command /qh sharing.
Five different filters that you can use to exclude certain kinds of objectives, like groups and timed quests. Also, there is a filter specifically for PvP in Wintergrasp, and you can set the priorities of every objective. By setting, for instance, the priority lowest at "Normal" will make QuestHelper not take note of group and timed quests, unless you specifically select these.

The Livability of Houston, Texas
Houston, TX, offers a mixed livability experience. The city's affordable cost of living, diverse neighborhoods, and job opportunities are appealing. Its cultural scene, including museums, theaters, and restaurants, provides entertainment options. The Texas Medical Center and strong healthcare facilities contribute to quality medical care. However, traffic congestion and limited public transportation can challenge daily commutes. Frequent heavy rainfall and the threat of hurricanes pose weather-related concerns. Air quality and flooding issues have been highlighted. While crime rates vary by neighborhood, safety can be a consideration. Overall, Houston's livability is influenced by its affordability, cultural offerings, and economic opportunities, balanced against potential environmental and infrastructure challenges.

It strains healthcare systems and increases mortality rates. Heat stress on crops and livestock can lead to agricultural losses, affecting the food supply. Ecosystems suffer as prolonged high temperatures disrupt biodiversity, harming plants, animals, and aquatic life. Infrastructure faces risks of buckling roads, power outages, and increased demand for cooling systems. Heat waves exacerbate air quality issues, intensifying smog and respiratory problems. As climate change heightens, the frequency and severity of heat waves escalate, highlighting the urgent need for mitigation and adaptation strategies to safeguard lives and the environment. Define
The second stage of the design process focusses on defining the problem, and developing human-centred thinking (Brown, 2008). Additionally, the define phase expands on the issue and broadens the parameters of the impact. Hendra Virus is a deadly zoonotic disease that is transmitted from flying foxes to horses, and horses to humans. Our wicked problem presents the issue of low vaccination rates in the Hunter region and presenting a solution to change that outcome.
The next stage of our process was strongly based in defining the issue and our target audience for the prototype.
The weekly task in our fourth class was to create an empathy map. Empathy maps can be used to gain a deeper insight into the perspective of an individual (Accenture, 2020), and breaking down the problem into sections allowed us to explore a variety of impacts.
Tumblr media
During Week 5, we were introduced to customer journey maps. By creating an identity that relates to the issue (in this case, “Horse Owner Steve”), we were able to understand the problem from a personal perspective.
Tumblr media
During this task, we used the journey map to explore potential solutions:
Medicated horse feed
Inspired by the use of lasalocid sodium in chicken feed to prevent coccidiosis (a fatal intestinal disease in chickens)
Mandatory vaccinations for events
Requiring horse owners to vaccinate their horses before entering them in races or shows.
Both ideas were later debunked with further research. Medicated feed, while an option, would require the use of medication that hasn’t been invented yet. Additionally, informing people of its availability would prove difficult to achieve. Later, we doubted the plausibility of a vaccine mandate. The existing vaccination for hendra virus is primarily to be used in emergency situations instead of widespread use, and requiring owners to give their horses an untrustworthy medication was deemed an improbable solution. After class, Lillian reached out to a horse owner with a survey to grasp their perspective on hendra virus.
The lecture for week 6 was canceled to allow time to talk with key stakeholders regarding our wicked problem. Both Lillian and Robert spoke with Dr. Joanne Taylor and Dr. Kirrilly Thompson about hendra virus, and took notes to document the process. These notes and research were later utilised for our week 7 presentation to reframe our ideas.
Tumblr media
During presentations in class, I took notes on actions we could take to successfully fit the brief. These notes later aided our layout for our presentation. At this stage in the project development, our group was progressing and working well with each other.

Hero Shooters
The origins of hero shooters can be traced back to early shooters that featured class-based systems that had playable characters in multiplayer modes. Games like Battlefield 1942 and Team Fortress 2 these games featured specific roles that a player could select that would come with their own unique abilities and sometimes specific weapons that were not available to the other classes. While the game sometimes had a lot of other global weaponry available in games like apex legends the hero shooter would make their players way more reliant on honing their skills on not just weapons but creative abilities.
The reason I am researching these hero shooters are because of balancing. I love the concept of classes based playstyles that are fairly balanced equally and use a range of gameplay techniques because it makes the game interesting and not easily masterful as it makes you reliant on not just simple weaponry but the mastery of different skillsets.
Modify into own words
Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is a 2017 released game as the sequel to the popular game destiny. The MMO has seen huge success over the years with a peak concurrent player number 290,000 in early 2022. The game is a multi-location slightly open world mass multi-player looter first person shooter. The game consist of many different modes including the
Crucible, which is classic fps games like TDM, CTF and Point control
Gambit: an interestingly crafted game mode that has you fight off waves of enemies, defeat bosses and invade other players trying to do the same thing
Campaigns: The main story and DLCs of the game that are rooted in storytelling
The characters that you control are made up of looted armour and weapons you have picked up along raids and journeys but also a class that you choose at the beginning of the game that give you exclusive abilities like grenades and healing auras to help you throughout additionally they're is an ultimate ability that is a large powerful ability indented for tons of damage.
Tumblr media
The abilities are unlocked throughout a skill tree that you have to work towards to switch out and customise your loadout
Brink
Brink is a 2011 Multiplayer campaign FPS, Similar to that of the layout of Titanfall, that utilises different different classes to be able to aid a team to success alongside a skill-tree system that allows you to unlock upgrades and advancements at your choice throughout then game.
System Perfectly explained here from 3:22 - 7:07
youtube
A brief summary basically is that their are 4 classes that operate different abilities like explosives, medical aid, engineering and technology. Additionally to this you also have a certain amount of resource for certain abilities and will replenish over time.
Paladins
A 2016 game developed by High Rez Studios that is very commonly criticised for possibly copying overwatch with a lot of heroes sharing a lot of similarities and abilities. Fundamentally it is a very simple Competitive FPS with basic objectives (Control, Tdm)
However some of the ability sets that do seem to be unique are quite interesting. For example, Androxus can perform dashes to gather air on enemies and with a high damage revolver they can create a unsuspecting and deadly combo.
youtube
The way the Hero Abilities loadouts are built are much different to any other, while you do get a select amount of abilities you can choose 6 modifiers to your characters to give you an advantage in these fights.
Block N load
A title developed by Art Plant and released in 2015 Block N Load is a voxel based sandbox fps game that has a multitude of components that makes up a unique hero shooter model. Starting with choosing your class and you also choose blocks that will aid you and your team in defending which is the next phase of gameplay with you taking 5 minutes to reinforce your base and its defences by spending materials on building pieces like walls, upgrades and traps.
youtube
Warframe
War frame is a game very similar to destiny with the looter shooter side of things replaced more by faster pace gameplay and mechanics that provide for a major high octane experience. It was released in 2013 actually before its competitors first instalment, the game structures itself by allowing you to choose between different "Warframes" that specialise in different areas of possible gameplay. With a range of various unique abilities from invisibility to mind control the frames are endlessly customisable with different mods that can also help your stats out significantly. In the video he breaks down further into better classes and how they better built.
