Fakes (prod. David Turko).

Starring local actors Emilija Baranac and Jennifer Tong and explicitly set in the suburbs of West Vancouver, the CBC/Netflix co-production is a real treat to watch. Revolving around the premise of a pair of high school best friends starting a fake ID empire on a whim, episodes find them getting deeper and deeper into trouble in mostly comical fashion.

What’s most remarkable about the generally lighthearted fun had is the sense of actual stakes when the mid-level but still serious criminal elements start to build. Furthermore, both lead characters have key family and personal details that flesh out their ill-advised motivations and taste for danger. Fakes remains surprisingly sophisticated while maintaining a breezy sense of situational comedy.

Enter the Video Store: Empire of Screams will be released on June 27 via Arrow Video. The Blu-ray box set includes five genre films produced by Charles Band’s Empire Pictures: The Dungeonmaster, Dolls, Cellar Dweller, Arena, and Robot Jox.

The Dungeonmaster is a 1984 fantasy-horror anthology with segments directed by David Allen, Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Steven Ford, Peter Manoogian, Ted Nicolaou, and Rosemarie Turko.

Dolls is a 1987 horror film directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Ed Naha. Stephen Lee, Guy Rolfe, Hilary Mason, Ian Patrick Williams, and Bunty Bailey star.

Cellar Dweller is a 1987 horror film directed by John Carl Buechler and written by Don Mancini. Debrah Farentino, Brian Robbins, Pamela Bellwood, Vince Edwards, Jeffrey Combs, and Yvonne De Carlo star.

Arena is a 1989 sci-fi action film directed by Peter Manoogian and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo. Paul Satterfield, Hamilton Camp, and Claudia Christian star.

Robot Jox is a 1990 post-apocalyptic sci-fi action film directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Joe Haldeman. Gary Graham, Anne-Marie Johnson, Paul Koslo, Robert Sampson, Danny Kamekona, Hilary Mason, and Michael Alldredge star.

The limited edition box set includes 15 postcards, five double-sided posters, Arrow Video membership card, and 80-page book featuring new writing by Lee Gambin, Dave Jay, Megan Navarro, and John Harrison plus archival material.

Each film is housed in its own Blu-ray case with reversible sleeves featuring original and new art by Ilan Sheady, packaged together inside a box with art by Laurie Greasley. Specs and special features can be found below.

Diet- Insects; Lizards

Cool Facts- Lilac-breasted rollers are well known for their brilliant coloration found on both sexes. These rollers mate for life and are solitary nesters. They are highly territorial against other rollers and possible predators. Using their bright colors, the pair will fly at the predator to distract them from the nest. During the mating season, lilac-breasted rollers will perform complex mating flights in which they dive and fly in sync. Insects are favored by these birds, often times following small herds of antelope to catch insects that are kicked up.

Tempered Yearend Gains When S&P Down YTD Thanksgiving

Last year at this time on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving S&P 500 was up 24.9% year-to-date. November 2021 gave back a fractional loss, but December and the Santa Claus Rally delivered solid gains. 

But then the stuff hit the fan. Inflation became non-transitory, the Fed began tapering asset purchases and telegraphing imminent rate hikes, Russia invaded Ukraine and the bear came out of hibernation. 

This year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving the market is in an entirely different situation with S&P down -16.0% YTD. The table here shows how the market claws its way back in most years with fewer but sizable losses bringing the averages down. 

The fact that November 2022 is up so far is supportive for continued upside. What stands out to us in this table is the rather solid performance for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving-Santa Claus Rally trade as well as solid gains for the Santa Claus Rally itself.
