My Twelve Favorite (Children’s) (Chapter) Books (in no particular order and without regard for genre or intended age) and then some

Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones. If you are looking for perfection (and if you love fantasy), you will find it here. This also serves as a placeholder for the rest of Diana Wynne Jones’s body of work. You can’t go wrong with anything she wrote, although I do have my favorites. The audiobooks read by Gerard Doyle are fabulous.

Tashi and the Big Stinker by Anna Fienberg and Barbara Fienberg . It was like this… (The whole series is phenomenal; picked this particular one because it’s my kids’ favorite of the lot). Probably written for children on the younger side (quite a bit younger, lol) but that’s never stopped me…

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.     If you want your heart torn out in less than a hundred pages.

The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, by Nancy Farmer. Each time I read this I find it just as thrilling as the last time.

The Grey King, by Susan Cooper.   While each book in this series is spectacularly written, this one is particularly haunting.  Again, be prepared to have your heart torn out by the roots.

Is Underground by Joan Aiken. An absolute gem by one of the most wildly inventive and fantastic authors to ever write for children (which obviously is saying a lot).

Lionboy by Zizou Corder.   A favorite in this household. The audiobook is – chef’s kiss.

Danny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl.    This book also serves as a placeholder for Roald Dahl, whose mastery goes without saying. The audiobook read by Peter Serafinowicz is terrific.

The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope.   Perfectly crafted. (lol cw: quite sweet heterosexual romance)

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Every time I read it, I love it all over again.

The Superlative Horse, by Jean Merrill. What is the price, and what is the value?

Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey. One of my kids' favorites, and mine too. The later books get a bit convoluted, but this one is so much fun.

6. what books have you read in the last month? since april 16 I've read six of crows by leigh bardugo (a reread), back to the garden by james mcgregor (interesting but not necessarily the strongest arguments), the body keeps the score by bessel van der kolk (quite good), and design is storytelling by ellen lupton (don't bother unless you are looking for an extremely basic intro to What Design Is)

8. what is the first book you remember reading yourself? definitely not the first book I actually read by myself, but the first book I remember reading on my own is franklin the turtle goes to the hospital, which cemeted my obsession with being a veterinarian for several years

10. do you have a guilty fave? not really because I don't feel guilty about it but a little life by hanya yanagihara is definitely a book that I love so much but would not recommend to anyone, ever

11. what non-fiction books do you like if any? lol me?? read a nonfiction book??? where to even BEGIN uh...my favorite book of all time is stuffed animals and pickled heads by stephen asma which is about natural history museums...I also love how to do nothing by jenny odell, a midwife's tale by laurel thatcher ulrich, bullshit jobs by david graeber, and liquid capital by joshua salzmann. basically if you want nonfiction recs I have them

ARTS 245 Week 2 + Reading Reflection 

This week of ARTS 245 focused on the completion of project one. Over the weekend, I completed my second row of Lady Gaga cut outs. Using cardstock, I depicted Lady Gaga in high contrast using blue against black and low contrast using yellow against yellow. The third square is based on the incorporation of texture, for which I used a sparkly silver texture. The color scheme of my project is inspired by Lady Gaga’s The Fame album, which has the primary colors of grey, white, and black complimented with the secondary colors of yellow and blue. The creation of my second row was particularly challenging in the aspect of craftsmanship. Intricate aspects of my original cut-out design, such as the facial features and the shapes in Gaga’s hair, required me to work on a small scale, resulting in the cut out not being the exact same as my original design. Following Professor Nace’s feedback, this led to me updating my original cut-out design, creating more unity in how the cut-out designs turned out. Using a rubber cement pickup also helped improve my craftsmanship immensely. For the final row, I completed a Xerox experimentation, a coloration, and a symbolic piece. For Xerox experimentation, I decided to focus on the neck, mouth, and lung area of Lady Gaga to convey what makes her famous- her voice. For the coloration of my original image, I added her iconic sunglasses from the album and her David Bowie lightning stripe from this era of her career. For the symbolic piece, I created a bold, abstract piece that used colors, forms, and objects relevant to Lady Gaga during this part of her career. Despite the challenges of this project, I am glad with how my spread of squares turned out, especially given the pressures of due dates similar to what a professional graphic designer would experience. 

For this upcoming weekend, I will glue my work onto an 18” by 24” black canson paper.

This reading was interesting in the fact that it taught me the official titles for textual alignments and other elements I have always perceived, but never knew the name for. I appreciate that Lupton pointed out the four “type crimes” that can occur with each type of textual alignment. As a novice graphic designer, I will likely find that my work may have an occasional pitfall, and by being able to recognize the alignment errors, I will be able to fix them or avoid them in the first place. This reading helped me by sharing that vertical arrangement of lowercase letters is not ideal, especially considering that I have frequently used lowercase letters in my work. Along with reviewing the various type crimes throughout this reading, I found the examples to be very helpful as references, and will likely return to these throughout the duration of my typography semester and beyond.
