(i'm so glad there's hype for a pet oc i made on a whim. i don't know why this cat is so special to me but she is.)

i honestly wish i had more of her - the most i have for 'davey and his terrible cat au' is a bunch of snippets, most of which i've already posted, and a very vague outline of plot.

the idea is that davey volunteers at a pet shelter between work and school and it's his whole life. he used to volunteer at his hometown shelter in high school, and he got really mad about how some of the volunteers treated the animals who needed more support. no one wanted to go near gollum. and it wasn't just 'cause she's a hairless breed, plenty of people like hairless breeds, to the point where it's kind of a problem. it's because she needed so much work. she was angry, she'd spit, she'd bite, she'd hiss, she wouldn't go near anyone and if anyone came near her it didn't go well. but we know davey has a soft spot for strays. we know he won't give up on things even when he really, really should. so he didn't give up on her - he'd sit in her kennel and read his books, just sitting with her in silence until she got up the courage to come near him. he'd talk to her. he'd wait until she touched him to pet her - and even then he'd stop if she seemed frightened. because that's all she was, FRIGHTENED. she wasn't a bad cat, she was just scared. and eventually, he adopted her.

where the plot ACTUALLY begins is the shelter davey currently volunteers for is running an event they annually run during exam season where people can come in and interact with the more sociable animals. it helps the animals socialize, it helps students destress, it helps bring people in a position to adopt into the shelter and it encourages people in a position to volunteer to do so, so it's a win-win all around. the problem is that jack starts volunteering afterwards, and davey really doesn't think he's cut out for it. volunteering isn't just having a bunch of pets with none of the responsibility, it's hard work that can sometimes be really heartbreaking, and he's just not sure jack's gonna last.

they become friends, davey's hesitations aside, and obviously jack is a little enamoured with him - so when davey mentions an ex-boyfriend off the cuff, jack tries to gage some interest. "ex-boyfriend, huh? wonder what that sucker did to mess that up." to which davey responds lightheartedly "oh, well my cat hated him, so he had to go." obviously davey's mostly joking - yes, gollum is distrustful of everyone but davey, but that ex was also just. not a good guy in general. but jack doesn't know that, so cue jack going out of his way to get the gollum seal of approval so he can date this man.

“Oh, Davey...” Jack tries to hide his cringe. “You put your cat in a sweater?”

Davey flushes beautifully.

“They’re medical!” He insists, hugging Gollum defensively to his chest. “You try going through winter with single-glazed windows and no fur!”

Jack raises a pointed eyebrow.

“So is there a medical reason it's a Star Fleet uniform, or...?”

Davey tries his best to hide his spreading blush behind Gollum’s skinny body.

“The Etsy store was having a sale...”

Circus au thoughts because I can 😈

The circus is originally run by Pulitzer (although he isn’t on the scene it’s Wiesel who is backstage “running the show”)

The Delanceys are the brawn of Wiesels show and help move equipment, handle animals (when they’re not on stage), and just basically do anything that requires muscle.

Davey does trapeze and contortion is one of the main attractions for the show. His main trapeze partner is Sarah they have like a wonder twins kind of act all their outfits are matching and they do a bunch of duo tricks.

Buttons and Romeo are tight rope walkers together (Buttons also does a lot of backstage work with costuming and such)

Stray works with the animals and trains them to do cool tricks (elephants and big cats)

Les, Albert, and Race have a clown act together. Race is the whiteface clown, Albert the Auguste, and Les the character clown. Most of their acts involve Race playing tricks on Albert, Albert getting mad, and Les playing along with either of them trying to decide which side to take. Albert’s make up is a very dramatic frown and grumpy eyebrows, Les looks kinda like a raggedy Ann with two big red circles for blush, bottom lashes and freckles drawn on with a big dimpled smile. Race is a classic friendly looking smiley clown.

Katherine does equestrian acts like riding on horses standing on them and doing handstands and stuff and like shooting bow and arrow while riding. (Toying with the idea that she’s also the ring master??)

Idk what the proper name for it is but Spot is like a miraculously strong woman and does all kinds of crazy weight lifting that wows the audience.

Jack has been hard to place. While I think it would be fun to have him doing freak show acts like sword swallowing and fire tricks and close up magic to warm the audience I think it would be more fun and more conducive to the Javey aspects of this to have him working backstage. He helps put up and bring down the circus as well as artistic aspects like planning out sets, painting and assembling. He also helps the clowns out with makeup. Between acts he does any set changes that need to happen.

Ok so those are all the acts that I have strong opinions about but obviously all the other newsies are sprinkled in there (feel free to comment if you have any strong feelings).

Basically Wiesel is running the circus and he’s obviously not kind to any of the performers and it kind of sucks. They all joined because of their love of the strange and peculiar but quickly become trapped in terrible contracts. They try to make the best of it with the friendships they create throughout performing but it’s pretty dismal at points. Because Davey and Sarah are the main event he’s particularly hard on them. They have to eat well, but not too much because he wants them slim. They have to practice and work out but not to the point that they’re too muscly and “unattractive” they have to get rest so that they perform their best but he keeps them up practicing and running new routines. They’re pretty isolated from the rest of the company because of their strict schedule and all the rules. It’s not until one day David runs into Jack backstage, maybe when he’s helping Les with makeup. David is checking up on Les like he usually does right before he goes on it’s usually a quick in and out so he’s not expecting to run into any delays. Jack has seen David perform but they’ve never spoken up close so of course Jack tries to talk to him (he’s completely enraptured) David runs off so he doesn’t miss his entrance but later that night he visits Davey in his dressing room. David is worried because of Wiesel’s strict rules he tells Jack he should leave so they don’t both get in trouble. Jack knows Wiesel is corrupt but doesn’t realize how bad it is until he starts interacting with Davey. He can tell how tired and overworked David is. He starts sneaking food to him and Sarah and they slowly become friends.

At some point Jack and David kiss and Wiesel finds out. He absolutely flips, blaming Jack for Davey’s incompetence in performance (he claims Jack is a distraction) he keeps Davey even more isolated and he basically doesn’t leave his dressing room unless his act is on.

Eventually somehow the circus ownership is transferred from Pulitzer to Roosevelt. This leads to the firing of Wiesel who is replaced by Medda (She takes over the role of ring master[or mistress I suppose?]) Overall conditions improve wildly and it becomes a light hearted experience for everyone once again. People have the chance to experiment more with their acts and what they do and of course Sarah and David become much more involved with the company.

And for you Delancey lovers I’ll say they get a little act after Wiesel leaves (whatever that is is up to you)

i'm ngl my star trek au au is mostly running on vibes wbwbwb so it is pretty kind and happy and warm (i just really like how much everyone in the enterprise's crew has such a respect and care for each other yknow. found family and all that innit).

that being said, here are some funky things about the characters ive been thinking about lately (under a cut because i'm incapable of being concise):

the stars were essentially jack's santa fe. he grew up surrounded by stories of starship captains and space and it became his lifelong dream and ambition to captain a starship, something which he dropped everything to attain. now he is captain of a starship– one of the youngest in starfleet's history– and it's wonderful and fantastic and he's never felt more alive! but there's always something gnawing at the back of his mind (he's based his entire life up until this point around this moment, it was a driving force and a beacon to look up to when times were tough. what if the experience is nothing like his dreams and he ends up disappointed? what happens when the mission's over? what'll become of him?).

also starfleet's assigned him a galaxy-class starship with families onboard and he's having a Time because of it (what if they get hurt under his watch. what if he gives the wrong order and a child dies. starfleet officers know the risks of space travel and are aware of this but the families. the children). other than that he's having a great time !!

kath's half-betazoid on her mother's side, but she never knew her mother nor has she ever been to betazoid (i really went woe! being mixed and only connected to one of your cultures but still being unable to fit in even there because of the fact that you're mixed be upon ye!). she's trying real hard to learn more about betazoid and who her mother is even though she knows she won't really feel like she "belongs" in betazoid either. she's working on understanding and using her empathic/telepathic powers more.

oh also!! pulitzer is a notorious and not-well liked admiral, when kath joined the acedmy she officially had her name changed to plumber and has since told no-one that they're related (this surely won't backfire terribly on her in the future)

also because this is the spot (cat) show, kath loves spot (cat) and wants to babysit her and play with her but alas. she is allergic to cats

race cannot catch a break– he's got a massive losing streak at senior officer poker night, spot (cat) hates him, he can't grow a beard but every time theres an impostor/clone/mirror universe situation the other version of him always has a beard (this is half in jest but also it amuses me wbwb)

jokes aside, i've been having a whole bunch of race as first officer thoughts (and a lot of riker and race parallel thoughts but. that's another story). i don’t really know how to explain it other than the way riker acts in the last episode of tng season two (yes, the riker montage episode) when facing death (joking around and keeping up the appearance of flippancy and courage in the face of agonising death because he’s first officer and there are people who look up to him and he has to set an example) seemed very race and very kony to me, in a way. (youve got this to blame for riker beard race. im not sorry)

race is also one of the first people to advocate for les becoming acting ensign. he makes it very clear that he's in les' corner and makes himself responsible for his studies and sometimes his training (and he teaches him poker).

OH ALSO! sarah and davey didnt know les ws going to be onboard and only found out about his presence after they'd set off. did he sneak onboard?? mayyyybeee (he just really wants to be a starfleet officer). after the initial shock (and notifying their parents) sarah and davey start the Let Les on the Bridge campaign (letting him watch the bridge from the turbolift, helping out in sciences and engineering, etc etc) the that eventually leads to les becoming acting ensign. it reaches a point where most of jack's senior officers would probably mutiny all for this kid.

there's more stuff but i'll stop rambling now because, again, i have a problem with being concise wbwbw. thankyou soso much for the ask rizz once again i love your star trek au so much and am always eager to hear more wbwbw!!! :D

When I think of Wallflower AU Graves my first thoughts are “Ride or Die fr” and “He’s probably killed a man.”

Graves grew in Hot-Shot’s family gang. His parents were recruited when he was around 10, when he met Hot-Shot who was 9, and Stray’s family came into the gang a couple years later, Graves was 12, and Stray and Hot-Shot were 11. He leaned how to survive from a very young age and was forced into jobs at age 12.

He and Spot met after Graves let Hot-Shot’s family gang- So he was around 15, and Spot would have been 13. They became each other’s unofficial adoptive brothers and Graves did all he could to protect Spot from thst life. (They now live together and Graves is technically Spot’s legal guardian.)

He split from Hot-Shot’s family gang at age 15 and was living alone (Too young but he had nowhere else to go). He took Hot-Shot in a year later for a short while, until some shit went down and Hot-Shot ended up permanently moving in with Myron.

Graves has just sort of always been there. Through everything that each of the Brooklyn Bunch have gone through. He was there for Spot. He was there when Hot-Shot ran away. He was there when Myron’s mother died. He was there when Willie got kicked out and so on.

He’s just always been there. As their rock I guess?

Hot-Shot is their dad, Graves is their rock.

Splasher used to live in Brooklyn and he and Graves became really close friends. The two went through a lot together. She was there when Graves had his accident. (Genderfluid Splasher truther)

^^ When Graves was sixteen he and Splash got into a really messy situation with some guy on the streets in Brooklyn. It was a stupid fight over ‘turf’ but things escalated to a knife fight and Graves ended up getting injured which caused him to lose his ability to speak.

Graves isn’t just their for support though, he and Splash used to help clean up messy situations the Brooklyn Bunch would get into. Hot-Shot was originally clean up, but Graves noticed how it would stress him out and pretty clearly remind him of his parents so he took over.

He has one of those old style cars with the open roofs so the Brooklyn Bunch can just hop in and they can ZOOM away after wreaking havoc.

He’s pretty serious, and has a resting bitch face but if you get close enough and manage to break through that tough guy exterior, he’s still a teenager. He likes to game with his friends, go on walks, mess around with Spot and Race.

Graves Facts!!

He’s a terrible cook, he and Spot usually order in.

He loves cats.

Bro has an extensive criminal record but he’s silly and was having a bad day so it’s fine.

His car has no numberplates and this deeply concerns Davey when they meet.

Earned the nickname ‘Graves’ after his accident, because it was a near death experience.

He and Spot are brothers, which means he gave Racer the shovel talk. (He secretly loves Racer, he just refuses to admit it. In his eyes, Racer makes his brother happy, so he likes him)

Has he killed a man? Possibly! Nobody wants to ask or know.

But like if evermore and folklore songs were to turn into rock songs with a little bit of reputation vibes sprinkled on top. And his concerts has the reputation era vibes but make it spot conlon (hey non swiftie fans reading this i’m so sorry i’m pretty sure yall don’t understand wtf i’m talking abt)

That is also the only way i know to describe his vibe i’m sorry but i don’t really listen to a lot of rock alkjhfasjk

Anyways it’s a known fact that he wears tank tops daily that it becomes his signature look. And also an inside joke among his fanbase

Now just picture the merch booth from one of his shows and there’s like endless tank top designs for his fans to pick and choose

But the joke is he’s a pretty tough hardcore guy that’s a cat person

She’s a badass female solo singer

Mostly does pop but the badass type of pop

Yes, she does go by Sarah Jacobs

Fans were really surprised Davey and Sarah are related

Because one is a hopeless romantic while the other is a total badass

Anyways she gives off Little mix, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez vibes

That is literally the only way I can describe it

She’s very lyrical, with a lot of metaphors

When she dances on stage, she d a n c e s

All while holding a mic to sing. And she hits all those high notes like it’s no ones business (a literal queen i tell you)

She and Spot are besties and has been known to have done a few collabs together

Their fans were hesitant about their collabs since their genre is pretty different from the other but they make it work and it slAPS

And among all her boppy songs with full choreography and backup singers, she always have a few songs she sings while only being accompanied by piano or guitar (Either electric or acoustic) which she plays on her own

Finch

He’s an indie pop artist with his trusted acoustic guitar by his side

Just think of music by Wallows and Lewis Capaldi were to be blended in together and Conan Gray for the cherry on top

But it has a little bit of Ed sheeran, Lorde, and Lauv vibes to it too

His concerts are simple but his songs are mostly very boppy so his fans still have fun either way

And it’s usually in small venues but there are times where he had a concert in a huge stadium

He goes by FINCH (yeah all caps btw)

Finches are a very on brand thing for him obviously

Has been known to collab with Crutchie and they actually make a very good team

Somehow was able to combined both genres to produce a few boppy songs

Ok ok but Finch and Crutchie have made a collaborative album (and maybe they went on tour????)

Specs 

He’s a history fiction writer

Yes this is inspired by the fact that he’s 100% a history nerd (no one change my mind i love this headcanon aight)

And he explores a lot of different histories from different parts of the world

He actually helps a lot of students understand history even further for school through his novels

Anyways he goes by Specs because I say so

No one knows why that’s his pseudonym and Specs isn’t interested in explaining either. No one other than the newsies need to know it was born from a stupid nickname the newsies gave him :)

His research mostly comes from history books because of his genre which wouldn’t be a problem since he has loads and will voluntarily buy more if needed

Also yeah he makes a great director for the movies taken from his books

Mush

He’s a chef on youtube

Goes by Mush Meyers

So think if Gordon Ramsey and his youtube channel but make it mush

Yeah that’s it really

Ok but Mush is a jolly and friendly person

Other than just food vlogging he does cooking challenges and cooking tips too

Sometimes he does the cooking challenges with a friend (mostly henry but i’ll get to him later on in the list)

But he also vlogs his life

Which isn’t really often but he likes to sometimes

He’s that big of a foodie he has a food blog too

And also a seafood restaurant so that’s cool :D

Henry

Like Mush, he’s a chef on youtube

Goes by Henry on the internet and in general

Ajkfhajfjska I’m thinking about how ppl would address him as Chef Henry kajhfkjlashfjklasfjklsf

He mostly does the same thing like Mush actually

Food vlogging and cooking challenges (they do it together so) sometimes cooking tips

Ok so I have a specific headcanon that Blink majored in psychology but didn’t end up being a psychologist

So instead he becomes a psychologist on youtube

The guy looks like he could cut you but his sense of humor once you get him talking is just *chef’s kiss* amazing

Which is why he also has a podcast because he’s also secretly great at talking

He just thinks mental health is very important, okay?

He’s an actor

Mostly on Broadway but has worked with Hollywood before

He’s usually a supporting character but has been known to understudy for main characters

Once again, the ‘mystery customer’ was striking.

That sounding pretty ominous, it was nothing that serious. It was just that every week, always on a different day, they’d get that girl coming in. And she’d come at times it was pretty dead, most likely to get the same barista. There she always went, leaning on the counter, giving these soft eyes and these sweet words, and she’d leave with her order. It was never the same order either, she just… drank of everything, apparently. Your fave could never.

Somehow, she was indeed having an effect on that barista she was messing with, but that didn’t make her any less frustrating to deal with. Yeah, the flirting was nice, but if she had a set name it’d just be so much easier, wouldn’t it ? Because giving a different name every week was getting a little old.

Of course, the barista would get quite frustrated after some time, how couldn’t she ? It’d been going on long enough. And the list of names… were similar, for some. Sometimes just complete unrealistic jokes. She could remember them all - Race, Racer, Racetrack, Antonio, Anthony, Tony, even Edmund and Ed,… Pretty Girl, too. Maybe this one was fitting, but Berta absolutely refused to believe any of these other names were that “pretty girl’s” name. For one, some of these weren’t names, and well… the others were masculine, and judging by that last nickname, she wasn’t a guy.

Either way, the redhead had a hard time staying calm as the blonde began babbling, her oddly squeaky voice fitting so well with her messy accent and pronunciation, her tripping over words and her obnoxious giggle sounding somewhat endearing… Okay, maybe she totally wasn’t paying attention to what she was being told and she got too busy getting lost in thought, but who could blame her ?

… Right, herself.

Once she woke from this kind of weird daydreaming phase, she tried to harden her expression a little. “Okay, yeah. And the order ?” She said, maybe a little harshly. But it didn’t bother her customer, whose grin widened despite her cheeks perhaps darkened a tad.

Quad venti blonde breve latte, extra hot, no foam, four pumps vanilla, three pumps cinnamon dolce, two white mocha, stirred, light whip, extra cinnamon topping.

This was ridiculous. Once again, the girl’s order had to be ridiculous. Maybe that was one time too much, and that “one time too much” the barista didn’t bother waiting for the girl to give her a name. No, she was choosing it herself. It was obvious to see on the blonde’s face that she wasn’t exactly expecting that, but did she really have a choice ? No.

“Look at it once you’re outside,” Berta muttered, groaning quietly when the girl smiled again and poked her cheek before making her way out, whistling pretty loud - and getting looks from other customers, although admittedly there really weren’t that many. It still grabbed some of them’s attention, enough for them to notice the  barista quickly yet quietly following after her, letting her coworkers take care of the place if even just for a few minutes.

Keeping sight of the blonde wasn’t the hardest task. She hadn’t gone far, just walked a few metres away and was now reading the name written on her cup with some sort of surprise.

Endearing, the shorter girl would tell you.

Casually enough, she made a few steps until she was close enough to the girl, before pausing and more or less working up the courage to talk. She wasn’t all that good at communication all the time, but she still tried. “So, Foxy,” she called out, causing the other to jump and turn around. Her gaze was always as captivating, perhaps due to how obviously emotional it was - reading her mind was impossible, but her state of mind was all too obvious at all times. What really got Berta though, it surely was how evident the blush on her face was. Striking, such a contrast with her blue eyes and her blond curls, that pink really fit well. Made her look softer, and maybe a little less insufferable.

Her lips moved incoherently for a few seconds before she frowned, and pointed at the cup. “Y'ain’t wrote that, it’s ‘Vixen’ on it,” she protested, getting the other to raise an eyebrow. Maybe it’d been easy to guess making that flirty girl flustered wasn’t hard at all, but it still gave her some satisfaction. Oh, and also it was cute.

“I know what I wrote and I know vixens are foxes.” That sure wasn’t the answer that girl had hoped for. Berta could see her bite down on her lip as she thought of a reply.

“… Yea, but– still. Why’s that anyways, I 'on’t look like a fox !”

“Reminded me of one.”

Could the girl make it any more obvious that she clearly wasn’t used to being teased ? Or, flirted with, depending on how she took it. Either way, just one more endearing, sweet thing about that cute fellow, and it kind of made the former more confident.

This time though, maybe she actually put some thought into what she was about to say. Nothing crazy, but she’d always worked on that “speaking before thinking” basis, pretty much ; having to really work out some sort of appropriate response, or even question for the situation. Because in the end, that barista had ended up following her outside, there must’ve been a reason. Yes, that’d be her question.

“So… What’s ya doin’ here ? Ain’t ya workin’ ?” She uttered, her accent somewhat worsened. Oh, maybe because she was chewing on the… the cup. Was that a stress reliever ? Whatever.

“I wanna get your name.”

“What, I gave–”

“Your real name, so I don’t sob to my friends about a cute girl named Anthony,” Berta insisted, almost mockingly - although that was all light-hearted. The poor girl seemed to whimper after “cute girl”. Haha, she found her cute, she could die happy was what the whimper meant.

“Well… 'f ya want my name, then I bet you should invite me for a sleepover some time !” The blonde tried. It probably came off as silly, even if Berta just thought it adorable.

“A… sleepover ?”

“Yea, like… the best kind'a date.” She continued, managing to sound genuine about it. “It ain’t too fast if I’ been comin’ to your shop for two months. We can totally have a sleepover.”

“But I could be a murderer an’ kill you in your sleep.”

“Bitch, wha’s the issue here ? I’d die a happy death.” She retorted - maybe a little too quickly. A chance she hadn’t pulled out the whole “oh, crush me with your arms” or any sort of stupid stuff she looked like she would totally say. And the redhead clearly wasn’t wrong about that, that kind of answer had definitely come out of that girl’s mouth a few times… Maybe she shouldn’t be thinking about it.

“So, name ?”

She seemed embarrassed to say it. “Anya.”

“That’s a real pretty name.”

“Yea, shut ya’ trap, spare me the compliments.” Anya groaned, her gaze wandering elsewhere. “ ’S just a name.”

“Sure, Anya,” Berta answered with a chuckle, shaking her head. “So you said a sleepover ?”

“Yea.”

“Then gi'mme your phone number or something.”

“Ya wrote yours on the cup.”

“… Ah, I did that.”

“Yea.”

It was her time to be embarrassed again, it seemed. Had she really forgotten so easily ? That was a shame for sure, but Anya wouldn’t be too bothered by it, she could tell.

“Anyway, I’m… I’m gonna need to go back to work. Maybe come more often. Oh, and you don’t have to run away everytime, you can drink it at the shop,” the shorter girl offered. But she was met with a head shake, and that bright, quite shit-eating grin the blonde always wore. Back to normal, huh ? Couldn’t stay away too long.

“Nah, I’m a busy gal ! Gotta get goin’ as well. I’ll catch ya later.”

“Oh, well…” Was that sadness ? Yes, maybe she’d have liked to talk to her some time, at the shop. But if she was busy, then… “Talk to you soon.”

Anya waved, blew her a kiss and then… ran away. And Berta watched her, frankly smitten. What a goddamn rowdy… cutie.

pip knowing that you saw this video and thought 'pidge needs to see this it's just like that dumb au he came up with about davey having the worst cat in the world' means everything to me. please take this davey's terrible cat au snippet as repayment; i decided it was way too specific to my own sense of humour for anyone to actually enjoy and so i nixed it from the actual fic but i still have a soft spot for it:

“Golly-Gee-” Jack can’t even finish the name without snorting through his nose. “Jesus, Davey. Seriously?”

“What’s wrong with that?” Davey shrugs, looking a touch put-out. “Golly-Gee’s a good name! It’s fun. Isn’t that right, little miss? Little miss Golly-Gee!”

Gollum perks up at the baby-voice – somehow still retaining all her dignity even so – and meows loud and proud, her flinty eyes warming into two soft amber glows.

“Please don’t.”

Davey shoots him a playful look from the corner of his eye. Slowly, he begins to rock Gollum back and forth, jostling her as if she were dancing.

“PhD in what?” Jack challenges with a raised brow and far too much fondness.

“Seismolo-gee.” Davey says with a smug smile, not even missing a beat.

“Okay, Quintin,” Davey sighs, arms folded at the little tuxy squatting precariously on the ajar door. “I don’t think you’re meant to be up there-“

The kitten’s paw whips forward, batting Davey across the face, and perhaps Jack has been watching too many soaps, because he can’t help his dramatic gasp. Davey only blinks, his glasses now dangling askew from his nose.

“You’ve assaulted me, Quintin.” Davey says flatly. “I will never forget this disrespect.”

Quintin hunkers down in shame, mewing piteously from his perch.

“No, there’s no room for excuses now,” Davey scolds in that same flat tone as he reaches on his tiptoes, his shoulders pulling at the flimsy hem of his work polo. “You are being unreasonable, Quintin. You are making a scene.”

It’s truly, honest to God unfair how well Davey pulls off a shitty work polo.

Quintin squirms on the thin line of the door, still not wanting to come down but growing more and more aware that he is a very wobbly kitten on a very small surface. He mews irritably, if only to prove he can, and Davey tuts his tongue against his teeth. He slides a hand under Quintin’s soft white belly and pulls him down in one slow and fluid motion, cradling the little thing to his chest as Quintin meows furiously.

“Right, then,” he mutters in a faraway monotone, as if his consciousness has left the human world in order to communicate with this very bad-tempered kitten. “To jail with you, young man – no, no, I shan’t hear it-"

Jack can only watch as he drags Quintin’s yowling little self back to the cattery, rambling nonsense while a kitten squirms and whines in his arms. Jack swallows, bracing one arm against the desk.

Davey may be the first man in all of history to make the word “shan’t” sound sexy.

pip i have thought about this so much actually. stray is probably the most dedicated volunteer they have besides davey, and is currently training to be a veterinarian, so she assists their shelter vet (i'll be doing more research on this though so). she's also a pet-fosterer and keeps up with all the animals she's fostered and placed in stable homes! she's very protective of the animals but, much like them, she's very good at telling when a person is trustworthy or not, hence why she warms up to jack so quickly. i still need to do some research so i know how to place her, but she's definitely an important character in the au :)

ugh see heres the thing, im such a pedant that even in fanfiction i think 'well realistically speaking depending on the average salary of [x job] and the cost of pet supplies this character would need as well as enrichment activities and time they'd need to set aside for proper-' and then i need to take that part of my brain out back and shoot it because it is FANFICTION and i wanna just have fun with it. thats a really longwinded way of saying i've been debating jack having a pet in the pet au for a while.

ive said earlier that the premise is that jack is volunteers w davey at the pet shelter, but daveys not sure jack can hack it since davey thinks hes gonna get too attached. and like. yeah jack does. theres an older pitbull whos been at the shelter for a LONG time as shes been returned from so many homes and jack falls in love w her instantly. she's such a gentle little thing and i know he'd be the worlds worst pittie dad - but even after adopting her he still puts in time at the shelter and fosters other animals as well when he can. this au is still very clunky and poorly outlined rn but that is something i want to happen.

and since you mentioned gollum and s'mores, yes he is also their dear uncle. gollum is aloof with everyone who is not davey but jack is one of the few people shes built up enough trust around to actually lie down next to and let pet her. i think the first time she purred near him, jack was just silently pumping his fist and hissing 'YESSSSS!!!'. s'mores on the other hand is affectionate with everyone until she isnt. she and jack will be having the best snuggle time ever, he'll be giving her belly rubs and calling her the best girl ever while she rumbles and then suddenly she'll be attacking his hand and he'll spend the rest of the day sulking over it. every time.

yknow what i actually can give a good answer to this, livesies/92sies sprace. i didn't include it in the first answer because i figured since i liked uksies sprace it didn't count but i'm gonna count it - literally all those two did was be conventionally attractive white men (well. white children for 92sies) who stood next to each other one (1) time. i don't get it. i will never get it. thank you uksies for giving sprace substance, you literally did the impossible.

18. ideas for stories/aus that you have, that you might or might not end up creating?

manhattan, west virginia has already left the station, the part 1 plot is outlined and part 1 chapter 1 is already complete, i just don't want to post it until i finish run boy run. but apart from that there's the pet shelter au, which i know how to write but don't entirely know where to go with, you can find that under #daveys terrible cat au, and the stick season au which had the opposite problem as in it popped into my head fully formed but idk how to write it yet; jack and davey grow up together in the same small town, are best friends who go through their 'teenage nihilist' phase and agree that yeah, the world's all going to shit, but they'll be together when it ends and that's enough, eventually start discretely dating - and then davey gets a full ride to a college jack didn't even know he'd applied for. and jack can't exactly say 'you can't go, you promised me we'd rot here together and i can't do it alone' so he lets davey go with the promise that they'll be fine. and they are not.

19: what kind of story would you never write?

in fanfiction,,, hm. i don't think i have many boundaries there. like i'm writing my cringe wingfic aus and pet shelter aus and i'm probably gonna write even more tropey and/or comedic shit like that 'cause it's fun for me, but i also really like my plotty multichap stuff, so,,, hm. probably sickfics? i've just never seen the appeal. sorry if that's a boring answer.

in original works, psychological slice-of-life fiction. fuck that. fuck it to hell. hated reading it. hated writing it. respect to better authors and better readers but it is not for me.

3. what work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

besides IANAFE, i am so god damn proud of run boy run. i've had this idea for years and the more confident i got in my own writing and the more proud i became in my neurodivergency, it changed completely and i absolutely love it. i always intended the fic to focus on davey's internalized homophobia but i never intended for it to focus on his autism, unless i was just playing his obliviousness for a joke. which yeah, i still do, but it comes more from a place of love for his character and for myself than genuinely mocking his (and my) autistic traits. it's become a real love letter to all the things i used to be so ashamed of and i just,,, oh i love it. so very much. i still can't believe so many people love it as much as i do and that this davey i have spoke to so many people. makes me a little emotional at times.

5. what work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

i don't want to include my WIP scribbles since they're not finished works but if i could? the 'davey's terrible cat' au. i didn't realize writing about davey being a reprehensible cat dad would spark such joy in people.

as for actual works, i'm gonna have to say "say you came on first" again. i didn't think the silly little 'davey as an oddboy' au i made mostly as a joke (and also mostly inspired by me watching the aristocats when i was having a case of the mondays) would be that fun for people? but i guess it was! honestly i thought (and still kind of think) that my portrayal of jack was a bit,,, trite. he's a lot more complex than how i wrote him and i'm trying to embrace that in my writing more, but this is from davey's point of view after all, and people seemed to like it just fine, even an author i really, really admired from all the way back to when i was first in the newsies fandom at 16. (although i still politely object to the person who called him 'whimsical'; he is simply a child. teenagers are just like that)
