Smash Pages Q&A: Darryl Ayo

Darryl Ayo has been making comics for years and remains known today for not just his comics, including the series Little Garden, but for his criticism. He has been published in The Comics Journal, Comixcube, Comics MNT, The Hooded Utilitarian and elsewhere. Little Garden features mythological creatures and humans in a world that is clearly not ours, but the focus of the series is centered around more mundane events and interactions. It also possesses Darryl’s sense of humor and a great sense of design and composition.

Ayo and I have met at shows for years and we’ve interacted on Twitter, but we’ve never before sat down to talk in a formal interview. So we took the opportunity to chat about his work and process.

Hector trying to get some science done at the Institute but a bunch of the poeple he ends up working with think he doesn't know that much bc they assume he was born post-war and wasn't educated like them. Eventually gets sick of it and has a "I've been doing this shit since before your great grandparents were born" moment, maybe even tries to dig up pre-war records of himself from the databanks to prove it

You tell ‘em, old man!

I feel like this can go a number of ways. Best case scenario is that it works, he’s now better respected and trusted to do his work well, people even come to him for advice.

I feel like this probably ends in Hector getting fed up and angry with someone, giving them a spook and a reminder that he’s not just a little science man, he’s also The Goddamn Overboss and perfectly able to fuck people up he dislikes enough. People have mixed feelings about him, some being able to see that he’s a good asset while others can’t get over whatever issue they have with him, but he gets left well enough alone to do his work.

Or, the underground science people hold onto their feelings of superiority and don’t believe him because the pre-war diploma he showed them was issued under a different name. And even if they believe that it’s him - if he can fake a name he can also fake a diploma.

Alternatively, he digs up the really really old video proof of him doing some instructional video, but uh oh, it’s for an outdated scientific method. And now people believe him that he’s old as fuck and has been in this field for a long time, but that also means he has tons of inaccurate knowledge and barbaric methods that are absolutely not up to par with Institute Standards, so he should really just fill out this list and not touch the experiments ever

Oh man, what if it does a 180 after it’s out that he’s together with Darryl? He gets Privileged Status because now he can have that without people getting suspicious about something they can’t know. And suddenly he has people trying to suck up to him because Power. And on the one hand it’s nice, finally people are listening to him, but on the other hand it feels all fake and insincere and at this point he’s not sure what’s worse - people being fake friendly because they want something out of it or people being sincere but rude to him

Sarap makinig sa klase kapag wala si titser kasi instant soundtrip agad. Buhay ang patay na oras sa classroom kapag nagsasama sila ng jammerz. Madaming kinikilig sa boses nya. At early age, tinitilian na din sya ng ghurls. Sya yung tipo ng mHaditUh ghurLs.

Magugulat ka nalang bigla nalang tutugtog tong mga to sa may hagdanan/klase tapos lahat nag kakantahan na. Paborito nyang kaskasin sa gitara ang eheads at parokya. Born-rockstar. At early age, music prodigy daw sya.  Takot kaklase nya sa kanya kasi ang tapang ng dating nya. Pero soft boi pa din ang ating resident tito. Mabait at mapagbigay.

Once upon a time in Mount Vernon 🌅

Good evening it’s finally the end of the week for office workers and guess what—I’m an office worker! Spending the evening by doing laundry and texting friends intermittently. I’m not good at having evening tea, I need some coffee. It seems unfair to only have energy and zest when I’m at work and then having to be sleepy eepy when it’s finally my own time.

I’m thinking about zines today. Not just making zines but how zines should interface in daily life. Do you read zines on the train? Maybe on your couch at home? Do you read zines on the porch or perhaps at a neighborhood cafe?

Random question: when you're feeling really low, is there a particular comic you always go to to cheer you up? If so, what is it?

I have several, but one of my most consistent is Little Garden, by Darryl Ayo. It’s soft and slow and gentle and very much a respite from both the comics I read for work and a lot of the specific real-world things that tend to fuck me up.

What's the issue with Ethan Van Sciver?

He’s a Nazi, and - while it would seemingly pale in comparison on the face of it, as does essentially anything after “he’s a Nazi” - a prolific arranger of harassment campaigns when he’s not snickering to himself and bleating about how the SJW’s are victimizing him, his target at the moment being Darryl Ayo (and to I believe a lesser extent Kieran Shiach).

Ethan Van Sciver (who you might remember as being the comic book artist who draws some nazi-looking fan art, you know, as a goof), I guess got in some kinda mix-em-up with Darryl Ayo (??).  No idea what that’s about-- haven’t read “the news” today.  

But his response to anyone wanting to talk about whatever-this-is is that he’s going to hold Atlantic responsible for “libel and defamation” (both!).  “I’m going to be quite litigious about a claim that’s subject to a fucking easy anti-SLAPP” -- capital idea, Perry Mason!   Isn’t Van Sciver one of those “the snowflakes won’t let me talk” dipshits? You guys, call me cynical, but I’m starting to think that nazi fan-artists might not be as sincere about believing in the First Amendment as they say they are. We’re through the looking glass. 

But it’s important to remember why the Freedom of Speech exists after all-- to protect the rights of also-ran’s to sell nazi fan art at comic conventions to white supremacist dorks, without repercussion, and not to protect news organizations, the law never does that, ever-- there’s no caselaw on that topic at all, genius.  That was the twist ending to that movie The Post-- Meryl Streep is in prison for being a newspaper girl, but while she’s in prison, she draws a Hitler moustache onto a photograph of Jason Robards, and flicks her bean to it, and then the jury from Amistad leaps to their feet shouting “America! Give them free!”  It’s moving shit-- Spielberg puts a light coming through the jail-cell door when Streep’s flicking her bean that really adds that Amblin magic to the whole thing.
