What better way to kick off the week of Halloween than with a #MonsterMonday? Today, we’re joining the “occult detective” and monster-hunter Doctor Adam Spektor and his Sioux secretary Lakota Rainflower as they discover that the real vampires were the friends we made along the way (or maybe not, the story is a little confusing).
This issue was published in 1974, but the series began in 1973, after Spektor first appeared in a short story in Mystery Comics Digest #5. Created by author Donald F. Glut (1944 - ) and illustrator Dan Spiegle (1920-2017), the series was published by Western Publishing’s Gold Key Comics imprint. Once it spun off into an independent series in May 1973, Spiegle was replaced by Jesse Santos (1928- 2013), an artist from the Philippines who began his comics career in 1946 with a feature in issue #1 of Halakhak Komiks, the first Filipino comic book. Glut and Santos also partnered together for other comics series published by Gold Key Comics, such as Dagar the Invincible and Tragg and the Sky Gods, and all three major characters had periodic crossover appearances in each other’s worlds. Spektor’s series ended in February 1977 after 24 issues, though his story did get a brief revival in issue #8 of Gold Key Spotlight the following August. All three creators would later take up careers in animation and children’s entertainment, though only one would later retire from the field to take up a new life as a lounge singer.
This item is Pam 2017.1288 in the Hagley Library’s collection of trade catalogs and pamphlets, and was #7 in a series of promotional ‘Dan Curtis giveaways’ issued by Western Publishing. Due to copyright restrictions, it can only be viewed online from on site, but you can view other comic books in our collection now by visiting this collection in our Digital Archive.

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.
Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is Crystal’s pick and it has always been her favorite of all of the followups to the original Halloween (1978) and loves it just as much today as the first time she saw it. Those who know Crystal know she has a thing for androids and that goes for Tom Atkins and Dan O’Herlihy as well. Chad is really into this “no Michael Myers” concept of Halloween III and an anthology-like series of Halloween movies. He loved H3 the first time he saw it and he loves it still. For Bill, there’s a huge dropoff in the sequels to Halloween (1978). As for H3, he had to get over the “no Michael Myers” hump, and even though the story makes no sense, he now enjoys it more each time he sees it. H3’s 14-time repetition of its famous jingle annoyed Jeff to no end when he first saw the movie. But like Bill, he now enjoys the film and even the jingle.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch gets a universal thumbs-up from your 1980s Grue-Crew! If you haven’t seen it for a while, or if it previously left a bad taste in your mouth, it might be time to check it out again. After all, it’s only 280 days to Halloween, Halloween, Halloween…
At the time of this writing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is available for streaming on multiple PPV services and on physical media as a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition from Shout! Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be From Beyond (1986). Lovecraft, Gordon, Crampton, and Combs for episode 199!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans:  leave them a message or leave a comment on the gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the website or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected]

We’re Packing Our Bags for These Conferences – Are You?
In the midst of winter, it’s nice to have a few trips to warm locales to look forward to, right? While learning conferences are mostly business, it’s still fun to get out of the office, talk to other eLearning and training professionals, and hopefully enjoy some warmer weather than winter in Utah.
These are a few of the conferences we’ll be at this winter/spring.
If you’re attending any of these, give us a shout in the comments! We’d love to have you stop by our booth or maybe go on one of our morning runs with us. Some of our super smart eLearning rockstars are also presenting at a couple of these conferences, so be sure to check their sessions out if you can.
ATD TechKnowledge
February 6 – 8, West Palm Beach, Florida
Florida in February—rough, right? (We’re so excited!) Here’s what ATD has to say about this conference “Augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, microlearning, and adaptive learning are no longer buzzwords—they’re here to stay. It’s time to embrace the new learning landscape. Whether you’re tech-forward, tech-curious, or tech-savvy, at ATD TechKnowledge you’ll discover what’s hot in learning tech from practical how-to’s, advanced strategy and solutions, and everything in between. This is your one stop for e-learning, mobile and social, trending technology, virtual classroom, and much more!”
Visit the event website for more details.
Learning Technologies UK
February 13 – 14, London
Learning Technologies has been happening for 20 years now. Crazy! It is considered Europe’s leading conference dedicated to organizational learning and the technology that supports learning at work. This year the conference is at a new venue—ExCeL in London’s Docklands. Their website boasts an “inspiring and provocative speaker line up” for this year. That’s a bold statement and I’m interested to see the Twitter backchannel during those speakers. I’ll definitely be refreshing #LT19uk on Twitter!
These rockstars from eLearning Brothers are presenting the following sessions at Learning Technologies UK:
The Hero’s Journey
Presented by Curtis Morley, Director of Marketing, eLearning Brothers
Today’s learners expect a lot from their learning games. This session explores elements in learning games that deal with the narrative, which can make all the difference. We’ll explore proven concepts from the “Hero’s Journey.” These apply to all incredible stories—from Rocky Balboa to Luke Skywalker to Indiana Jones. These elements get people enthralled. Dedicate your attention to this session and return to your job with story elixir!
Building Game Elements – How Hard Is It?
Presented by Andrew Vass, Developer and Evangelist, eLearning Brothers
It’s been pounded into our brains that gamification is an essential component of any learning experience—if our learners aren’t having fun, they won’t retain the information. But how exactly do you build these elements into your training? It’s easier than you might think. This session will cover:
-What constitutes a “game”
-Examples of gamification in eLearning
-How to build game elements in some of the most popular eLearning authoring tools, including Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, and Lectora
Visit the event website for more details.
Training 2019 Conference & Expo
February 25 – 27, Lake Buena Vista, Florida
eLearning Brothers is not exhibiting at Training 2019—our booth team needs a break now and then—but the amazing Rich Vass, Director of Custom will be presenting with eLearning Brothers alum Dan Dellenbach there. If you can’t make it to London to see Curtis present on The Hero’s Journey, this is your chance to see Rich and Dan speak on that topic instead. Honestly…Florida is probably warmer, and definitely cheaper to fly to… But London is just awesome because it’s London, so that’s a tough decision.
Visit the event website for more details.
Learning Solutions
March 26 – 28, Orlando, Florida
Another conference in Florida. I’m starting to see a theme here. Learning Solutions Conference & Expo aims to provide you with “real solutions to create new strategies, increase engagement, and leverage the power of learning technologies.” I like to think of this one like a mini DevLearn. eLearning Guild always puts on a quality conference, so if you want great content without the crazy crowds of DevLearn in the fall, this is a great option.
You can follow #LSCon on Twitter to keep up with tips from sessions and see what’s happening at the Expo if you’re not attending. And of course, keep an eye out for our photos from the conference!
Visit the event website for more details.
One last thing…
If you’ve seen us at any conference, you know we always have some great booth giveaways and swag. Therefore, it would just be crazy not to stop by and see us, right? We thought so.

What better way to kick off the week of Halloween than with a #MonsterMonday? Today, we’re joining Dagar the Invincible, the lovely Lora-Lei, her brother Lopoff (a werewolf), and the monstrous Danfroth, who apparently just wants a friend.
This issue was published in 1974, but the series began in 1972. Published by Western Publishing’s Gold Key Comics imprint, the comic was the brainchild of author Donald F. Glut (1944 - ) and illustrator Jesse Santos (1928- 2013), an artist from the Philippines who began his comics career in 1946 with a feature in issue #1 of Halakhak Komiks, the first Filipino comic book. This particular issue was #8 in a series of promotional ‘Dan Curtis giveaways’ issued by Western Publishing. While Glut and Santos would partner together for other comics series published by Gold Key Comics, such as The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor and Tragg and the Sky Gods. Dagar’s storyline ended in 1976 after eighteen issues. Both creators would later take up careers in animation and children's entertainment, though only one would later retire from the field to take up a new life as a lounge singer.
