Should I mention I gave up trying to balance Modern Manhwa and Historical Manhwa in this? Because I did.
Tumblr media
Forgot about this for a hot second but now I'm digging up my notes on the madness of this thing.
The newer chapters of Honkai Impact have given me a lot to think about.

as a fellow orv fan i think you have good taste. what is this damn reincarnation you speak of............
damn reincarnation—officially titled "my blasted reincarnated life" but who the fuck is gonna take that seriously. not me!—is a manhwa about hamel, one of the heroes who saved the world from the demon kings, but who tragically died just before the party could kill all of them. in hamel's final moments, vermouth—the strongest of the heroes—promises to kill the rest of the demon kings no matter what. hamel then reincarnates as the descendant of vermouth to find the world at peace as they'd all hoped...except the final few demon kings are still around. despite their promise, vermouth struck a deal with them instead of finishing them off.
just why did this happen? did vermouth betray him, or were there other reasons? are the demon kings really to be trusted? why did he reincarnate as vermouth's descendant? what happened to his former companions? what did they have to say about all this? are any of them still alive? who can he trust? just what is he meant to do?
this is what damn reincarnation is about. basically, i like it because of two reasons. one, the writing is well done. it's paced well, with plenty of room for characters to grow, for events to be set up and revealed, etc. low low bar but it solidly clears it which is more than i can say for plent of other similar series. and two...oh my god fucking finally a reincarnation series where the reincarnation bit is vitally relevant for the entire rest of the plot, not just a Get Strong Quick scheme that's never actually plot relevant aside from maybe an identity crisis angst chapter. like. it is a Get Strong Quick scheme too dgmw, I'm not saying damn reincarnation is a masterpiece or reinventing the wheel or anything, but it's just really engaging and fun to read.

I really like Damn Reincarnation cause unlike a lot of other reincarnation series, the fact that he reincarnated is vitally intertwined with the main plot. It's not as simple as "Whoa, I reincarnated! Thanks for the second chance, gods!" and then it's never actually relevant aside from an easy tool to make the protagonist OP.
Instead it's "Why did I reincarnate? Who is responsible? Why did I reincarnate in this body, in this time, specifically? Why did things end so differently after I died? What happened to make things the way they are now? Is this really for the best, or is something wrong underneath the surface? How can I answer all of these questions?"
It's refreshing to see a reincarnation story that is actually genuinely about the reincarnation thing.

FEH Validar... is going to have no choice but to go through some character development. Aversa regained her memories. 4/5 of the Grimas summoned have lost theirs, and the 5th, despite being the most powerful, is also the saddest, openly admitting to feeling empty inside. Things just aren't the same as they were in his home world.

having evil thoughts today (reincarnation au. a distant family member makes an old person style homophobic comments about John and Alex and Alex can only just be stopped from physically assaulting that old man and then has a crying screaming breakdown in the nearest available closet because they were supposed to be safe now this is so unfair they paid and paid and paid every price and had to hide all their lives and now they're supposed to be able to live in the open like they never got to do but still they're being attacked and ridiculed and he just can't do all of that again but goddamn it all he will for John)

Chainsaw Man thoughts go brrrr. Thinking thinking thinking about the wild end of csm part 1. It's everything to me right now. So... spoilers below.
Cannibalism as an act of all-consuming love.
Makima as the houndmaster devoured by one of her own dogs.
Eaten by Denji, who still loves her even after everything she's done to him. Denji, whos scent she didn't care to memorize because she could smell Pochita in him, and that was all she wanted. Makima says that to be eaten by chainsaw man would be an honor, but she's not eaten by chainsaw man. Denji doesn't rip her apart and devour her with the many teeth of his devil form. He brings in Kishibe to help him, and they... butcher?dismantle?piece Makima out into cuts of meat and bone and organs.
He has to eat All Of Her for this to work.
And he eats her as Denji. Takes his natural time with it, cooks her into a variety of dishes, eats some of her raw. Savors every bite. He dreamed of eating good food and being with a woman, and I just gotta say... the monkeys paw was not feeling very merciful on this one.
Did he learn how to cook from Aki?
When it's done and finished and Makima's not coming back, he reports back to Kishibe and reasons that Makima did not revive because what he did to her was not, in his eyes, an attack. Consuming her, becoming one with her, was an act of love.
And then Kishibe just? Straight up drops a whole child on this child? (eternally a child? the hybrids don't seem to age. will he be sixteen forever?) Anyway, congrats on saving the world, Denji. Here's a little girl who exists as a direct product of what happened between you and the woman you "became one" with and also she is the reincarnation of that same woman. Better give her lots of love and a good stable home so she doesn't grow up to be Makima 2! Time to be the loving father you never had and not the one you were forced to kill to defend yourself. Time to be a good big brother like the one you were forced to kill to defend others.
(and akis name is on the big list of gun devil casualties, and by definition fiends are possessed corpses, and he was for sure already dead. even if denji could have subdued the gun fiend and somehow gotten it docile, it still wouldn't have been aki anymore. that doesn't make it any easier to put down the monster wearing his brother's body, or stop him from agonizing over whether there was something he could have done to save him)
So there Denji sits, a seventeen year old kid (sixteen forever?) dealing with the loss of his family, surrounded by the uneasy beginnings of a new one. Eight leashes in his hands. Seven dogs that belong to the girl in front of him more than they belong to him, and his late sister's beloved cat, the only one besides him to have survived.
Denji looks down at his new sister/daughter/roommate and asks if she would like to go get something to eat.
Just... not meat.
