Some initial doodles as I've been intending to work with Seska and Culluh's son Sessen a little bit more.
In designing him I'd had to spiral down figuring out how I wanted to portray the Kazon in general which wasn't suuuuuper fun but I'm happy and satisfied where I landed. :) Ummmm I went more HEAVY on the rooster/vulture inspiration for them that was already incorporated into their design choices but I also added turkeys because male turkey tails were giving me the closest vibes to Kazon hair. :) And with that I likeeeee expand the range of Kazon hairstyles to stuff involving dreadlocks and anything that gives off the Literal Bird's Nest vibes. I kept Culluh's as being relatively identical to his show hair because I feel like he pulls it off and looks the most normal with the big mess. Alice also had the galaxy brain idea that Kazon would collect the feathers of slain enemies (Obviously other Kazon) and keep them in their hair as a display of dominance. I also changed their "ridges" to come across as something more similar to rooster crowns, and I think they'd have big turkey-like feathered tails. The sizes of both would equate to a more genetically superior prowess. Sessen as a halfbreed tends to genetically favor his Cardassian mother and as such lacks both large tail feathers and a crown altogether. I'd also had the idea that to go with the ambiguous set up of Basics, Sessen as a newborn doesn't portray too many birdlike elements in his appearance, but as he ages he starts to develop fuzzy baby chick-like plumage.

Janeway: All right, what's your gimmick? Maje Culluh: Gimmick? Chakotay: Yeah, like the last Kazon sect we dealt with. They were all ragtag misfits and crap. What are you? Culluh: *sneering* We're just here for your technology, Captain. Though if I had to choose, I'd say I am the pretty one. Janeway: Meh, six out of ten. Culluh: You sassy b*tch.

On the subject of me being occasionally forgetful of Star Trek’s lore, one time I re-watched Voyager’s Basics with a friend and was shocked by Seska's death scene because I had completely misremembered how she died despite having seen the episode twice before.

If I could reboot Voyager, here are some of the changes I'd make.
Much more serialization. Still mostly episodic, of course, but things that happen in one episode would have lasting repercussions. If the ship gets damaged, well it's going to stay damaged, or they're going to have to figure out how to effect repairs. Maybe have seasonal "big bads", like Buffy.
Play up the initial conflict with the Maquis for the first few seasons, and give the Maquis actual ideological objections to the Federation (a la Eddington on Deep Space Nine), rather than just making them generically rough and tumble. There would be a whole arc where some of the Maquis talk some of the lower-ranking Starfleet officers around to their side on the grounds that Janeway effectively has a dictatorship over them for their entire lives and she's too hidebound and is squandering opportunities to get onside with possible local allies. There'll be an actual mutiny (or at least an attempted mutiny) in the first few seasons, but it will fail because Chakotay (we'll come to him in a minute) opposes it; but the ship will settle into a much more egalitarian social structure nonetheless
Seska will remain on the ship after being unmasked as a Cardassian spy, claiming asylum under the terms of the Federation-Cardassian treaty that created the De-Militarized Zone. Her presence will be a major source of the friction between the Maquis and Starfleet crews, because it turns out that her espionage actually got some of their comrades killed back in the Alpha Quadrant
Give nuance to the Kazon; play up the generational trauma inherent to their backstory, and maybe make Culluh an ambitious but sympathetic empire-builder, rather than just a violent thug
Present the Kazon as more of an actual culture with their own arts and accomplishments, rather than just as Space Gangbangers.
Two waves of despair will rock the ship for several episodes. The first when they've been stranded for a few months and the reality of their situation hits them; the second when they get in touch with the AQ and find out that the Maquis have been exterminated.
Pick an actual indigenous nation for "Chakotay" to belong to and hire actual consultants from that nation for the writing staff. It will presumably be necessary to rename the character accordingly.
Really flesh out the minor characters on the crew: Carey, Ayala, Tal Celes, Suder, Vorik, Jonas, that cosmology grad student on the lower decks who didn't want to be on the ship in the first place. All of them will make the ship feel more like an actual place with the same nine characters doing everything; and when one of them dies, it will hurt.
Relatedly, all of the people who die in the first episode will have names and friendships with the crew, and their deaths will actually mean something.
Explore the comedic and dramatic potential of Starfleet crewmen having to be roomies with Maquis terrorists. I'm thinking some initial "Odd Couple" shenanigans, growing into friendship, with a sort of hurt-comfort romance emerging after they find out that all of the Maquis back in the AQ are dead.
Give Neelix more of a dangerous streak. The first episode made him out to be a shifty conman and the first season established that he had serious PTSD. I want to see more of that Neelix.
Have it take a full season just to de-Borg Seven of Nine. Her character progress is reflected in how many of her implants she has.
Have Seven of Nine push back more on the narrow canons of "humanity" that she's expected to perform; and have it go both ways; maybe instead of it just treating it like a joke when she proposes, for example, that someone try Borg regeneration, they actually take her up on this, and Janeway is accordingly horrified. You could get a neat plot about bodily autonomy out of this.
Establish that the Borg hivemind has developed a sort of "neurosis" around humanity and Voyager, stemming from the fact that they required Voyager's help to defeat Species 8472. This is the Queen motivation for wanting Seven of Nine back in "Dark Frontier"
Kes still ascends, but she hangs around somewhat longer. And she's doing and trying lots of things, rather than just hanging around sickbay most of the time.
Have Seven spend more time with Tuvok; maybe adopt Vulcan philosophy
There are no holodecks for the first few seasons because they need to conserve power. When they finally get them up and running, it's a big frigging deal. Before that, there's a whole plot where someone (Tom Paris) uses the emergency medical holoprojectors to make Sickbay into a holodeck, much to the Doctor's consternation. Janeway, however, allows it for a few hours a day as a means of building crew morale.
They build alliances and trade networks in the Delta Quadrant, and eventually realise that this is home for them now

i think that it's kinda annoying that seska's baby in voy turns out to be culluh's instead of chakotay's, like i understand the practical reasons behind the decision but also......... i feel like it could've made a rlly interesting storyline if it actually HAD been chakotay's kid and he'd had to properly deal with that. like he ends up accepting the child as his and going to all that trouble to rescue it and then the show is just like "oh it's culluh's kid nvm" it feels like a let down.
i would've loved to see more exploration of it, like how chakotay would love his son and want to take care of him but also have so many complicated feelings bc the kid only exists bc of seska assaulting him and she deceived and hurt him, but also he did once love her and she loved him even if that love was harmful and abusive, but also it's not the kid's fault that he was born into that situation................ also grappling with the child being half cardassian, how he'd no doubt LOOK visibly part cardassian as he grew up, and how chakotay spent so long in the maquis structuring his life around fighting cardassian oppression but now his son, who he loves, looks cardassian, and how even though that isn't the kid's fault it would undeniably bring up some uncomfortable feelings..............
aside from the specific circumstances of the child's conception etc, they could've also explored what it's like to raise a kid on a starship in the middle of nowhere, but also what it's like to BE a kid in that situation. idk yet if they explore that with ensign wildman's kid yet........ but i hope they do. like imagine being a little kid on a starship thousands of lightyears away from other kids like you. the only home you've ever known is a completely sterile ship floating in the vacuum of space. your parents and their friends say that they're trying to get "home", but what would home even mean to you in that situation? what about schooling, who would teach you when everyone on the ship is needed to perform their duties? what would you do for fun?
it would've also been cute to see ensign wildman's little kid have a friend to hang out with. like i said i'm still in early s3 so idk if that does happen but i suspect not............

Seska was a more compelling villain than any of the ones who came after her. I would have liked her to be the main antagonist of Voyager, at least for the first half of the series. She should have only been pretending to be subservient to Maje Culluh and then killed him and taken over the Kazon as their new overlord (sort of like what Lore did with the Freed Borg on TNG). She had such a crappy death. A show where the captain is female and most of the villains were female would have been so cool. I suppose we ultimately got a female main villain with the “Borg Queen,” though I prefer Seska. I never cared for the idea of the Borg having a leader, and the Borg are quite boring and predictable. Meanwhile Seska is ruthless and you never know what she’s gonna do next.

Amelia gets lost in the Delta Quadrant after her starfleet ship is attacked and destroyed. Rather than attempt to return home and face failure and quite frankly more of the same looming expectations that persist in her life, she chooses to remain lost. She ends up working as a dancer in a Kazon club for a time, just trying to lay low and survive, abandoning her Starfleet attire. There she'd meet Culluh's son, Sessen and they end up developing a friendship and she serves as a confidant within his sect, similarly to Seska but Sessen's a lot nicer than his father was lol.
just my silly lil thoughties::: I think a Maje's cabin, while lavish in decor, would have a rather messy and nestlike bed and a lot of their dropped feathers kinda accumulate there. And the way Amelia and Sessen might toss around in bed together she tends to end up with a lot in her hair. :) ummmm and i have the headcanon that because the kazon are feathery and fight amongst themselves, they wear the feathers of their defeated enemies in their messy hair as war trophies. i have sessen wearing one of his father's, and amelia has one of sessen's. and then i imagine theyd both wear one from a rivaling sect's maje that they skillfully defeated together.
