“But still I think marrying too young is a bad thing . . . Then again the wife ought not to be too young; look at the poor Crown Prince Rudolph. She was certainly too young when he married her; she became very ill after her first child was born & naturally he was a very wild young man. The result was he committed suicide & killed this poor girl & brought the most terrible sorrow & shame to his poor wife & parents; that is only one instance of young marriages that I know of . . . The one thing I never could do is to marry a person that didnt care for me. I should be miserable for the rest of my life.” -George to Queen Victoria
George wrote this letter to his grandmother, Queen Victoria, as a young man while serving in the Navy. His grandmother was trying to persuade him to propose to his cousin Marie of Edinburgh. George's views on marriage is clear from this quote.

Some months ago I found this very interesting mention of Queen Marie in the memoirs Thomas St. John Gaffney, the United States consul general in Munich during World War I. I forgot to share it before so here it is:
An Afternoon with the Countess of Konigsmarck and Former Queen Maria Sophia, of Naples
Some time previous to my departure there had arrived in Munich from London the Countess of Konigsmarck, mother in-law of Baron von Bissing, the German Governor-General of Belgium (...) Having learned that I was about to visit Belgium she asked me if I would undertake a mission for a friend of hers who was a royal personage. I answered that I would be most happy to do anything that was consistent with my honor and the official position which I held. She replied that she would communicate with me later and arrange an appointment with the person in question.
The following day I received through the countess an invitation to tea to meet the former Queen Maria Sophia of Naples, who was then in Munich. I was naturally very much interested to see this venerable and exalted lady whose name had been so well known and honored in Europe on account of her heroism during the defense of Gaeta against the Garibaldians in 1861. The self-sacrifice of the beautiful young Queen during the horrors of that siege was one of the few glorious episodes in the history of the Neapolitan Bourbons. Her Majesty had now reached her seventy-fifth year, but was still sound in body and mind. Her figure was erect and neither her manner nor her movements showed her age or any traces of the harrowing vicissitudes which had occurred during the past half-century in her immediate circle. As I conversed with the Queen, I could not help recalling to my mind the many tragedies to members of her family during her own lifetime. Her nephew, Crown Prince Rudolph, heir to the Austrian throne, had met an early death under the most tragic circumstances. Her elder sister, the Empress of Austria, was the victim of an assassin; another sister, the Duchess d'Alencon, was burned to death in a charity bazaar in Paris. In 1886 her brother-in law, Count Ludwig von Trani, committed suicide in one of the Swiss lakes. These were but a few of the tragedies that the Queen had survived in addition to the loss of her throne. In 1894 her husband, King Francis, died in Arco in Tyrol.
After we had drunk tea, the Queen told me that she was anxious to send a message to her niece, the Queen of the Belgians, and she hoped that during my visit to that kingdom I would be able to forward the same with some assurance of its being delivered. Of course, her Majesty assured me that there was nothing political involved and that I need have no hesitation on that account. I thereupon mentioned to the Queen that I had recently read in an English paper an interview alleged to have been held with the Queen of the Belgians in which she was quoted as saying that an iron curtain had fallen between her and her Bavarian relatives which would never be uplifted.
The aged Queen replied to me with a pathetic smile: "I am sure that my niece has never used such language and that she has been deliberately misquoted. You know how the press, particularly in the present time, is using its power to make hatreds rather than encourage concord amongst men."
She then handed me the document for the Belgian Queen, and the Countess of Konigsmarck gave me a letter commending me to her son-in-law, Governor-General von Bissing. With hearty good wishes from these two venerable ladies for a pleasant and successful journey I took my departure.
As I walked back to my home my thoughts dwelt on this interview and the commission I had received and what exaggerated ideas people have of the power of royalties. The public has really no conception of the limited influence which members of the royal family outside the reigning sovereign have on the ministry or the military and civil authorities. This was evidenced by the Queen of Naples having recourse to an unimportant person like myself for this small favor rather than apply to her cousin, the King of Bavaria, or the Foreign Minister.

The Prince and Princess Philip of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, whose quarrels have for many years furnished material for gossip at the Courts of Vienna, have at length come to the decision that life together is an impossibility; and therefore the Reigning Duke of Coburg has given his consent that the question of a divorce shall come before the courts of justice at Gotha very shortly, and be tried in due course.
The Princess Philip, who is still a beautiful woman, was only sixteen when she married Prince Philip on February 4th, 1875, who is fourteen years her senior, and who was even at that time, a man quite incapable of making his wife happy.
The Princess, who is the eldest daughter of the King and Queen of the Belgians, was a high-spirited handsome girl, full of life and very pleasure-loving, but with many amiable qualities and pleasant characteristics.
Her eldest son, Prince Leopold, was born on July 19th, 1878, while her daughter, the Princess Dorothea, was born three years later, on April 30th 1881. Her Royal Highness was devoted to her children, and while they were little she spent a great part of her time with them, and in this way was saved from looking for amusement away from home.
Prince Philip, who from the earliest years of his married life tried to train his wife to understand that marriage meant utter liberty for him, has naturally only himself to thank that his wife has taken as much liberty for herself, and that in consequence he has been put to the unpleasant necessity of fighting more than one duel on her account.
The Princess was neglected by her husband from the earliest years of their married life, and his open infidelities were the scandal in Austrian and Hungarian Society – the fact that he has on more than one occasion struck her being known by all. That the life of the Princess has not been what it should be is true; but Her Royal Highness suffered for many years before she gave way to her present extravagant manner of living, and had her husband been different, she would have been an excellent wife and mother, and have found a vent for her exuberant spirits in her favourite pursuits of riding and driving.
It was through the influence of Prince Philip of Coburg that the late Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria was led into the courses which ended with his tragic death at Meyerling. Prince Philip, who is the head of the Coburg-Kohary branch of the family, is enormously rich, and stated that he will not hold himself responsible for any debts contracted by his wife.

I could see ewan playing crown prince rudolph. The one who died in a murder suicide. He doesn't look like him at all but I could see him freaking nailing such a batshit, troubled role. Also rudolph was only 30 when he died.
He is absolutely unhinged enough to pull that off. Unfortunately, likeness plays a large part in casting, so I don't think he'd ever land that role if it were to ever exist.

How Christmas costumes are outfits worn during the holiday season?
These costumes often incorporate festive and holiday-themed elements to capture the spirit of the season. People of all ages may wear Christmas costumes for various occasions, including holiday parties, parades, performances, and other festive events. Here are some popular Christmas costume ideas:
Santa Claus: The iconic Santa Claus costume includes a red suit, white faux-fur trim, a black belt, boots, a white beard, and a red hat with a white pom-pom. This costume represents the jolly figure who delivers gifts to children on Christmas Eve.
Mrs. Claus: A complementary costume to Santa, Mrs. Claus is often depicted wearing a red dress, white apron, glasses, and a white bonnet. She is often portrayed as Santa's partner and helper in the North Pole.
Elves: Elf costumes typically feature green or red outfits with pointed shoes, hats with bells, and often striped tights. These costumes are inspired by Santa's workshop helpers.
Reindeer: Reindeer costumes can be created with brown or tan outfits, antlers, and red noses (like Rudolph). They can also include a harness or sleigh accessory to complete the look.
Snowman: A snowman costume might involve a white outfit with buttons, a carrot nose, a top hat, and a scarf. It's a fun way to embody the wintry spirit of Christmas.
Nativity Characters: For religious Christmas celebrations, costumes representing characters from the Nativity story, such as Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, angels, and shepherds, can be worn.
Grinch: Inspired by Dr. Seuss's character, a Grinch costume might include a green fur suit, a Santa-like hat, and a mischievous expression.
Nutcracker Characters: Costumes based on characters from "The Nutcracker" ballet, such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Nutcracker Prince, and various other enchanting figures, can be worn for holiday-themed performances.
Ugly Christmas Sweater: While not a full costume, ugly Christmas sweaters are popular during the holiday season. These sweaters feature loud and gaudy designs with festive elements like reindeer, snowflakes, and more.
Gingerbread Man/Woman: Gingerbread-themed costumes can be created to look like the classic holiday cookie, complete with frosting details and buttons.
Tumblr media
Remember that Christmas costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you'd like, depending on the occasion and your creativity. Whether you're going for a traditional look or a more unique interpretation, the goal is to spread holiday cheer and have fun!
how you can mix and match elements to create your own special holiday ensemble:
Santa's Workshop Elf: Combine the classic elf attire with tools and toys to portray a busy North Pole workshop elf. Add a toy hammer or a small plush toy to your costume.
Frozen Snow Queen or King: Take inspiration from the "Frozen" movies by creating an elegant snow-themed costume with a touch of regal flair. Incorporate icy colors, sparkles, and a crown or tiara.
Christmas Carol Ghost: Put a twist on the classic "A Christmas Carol" by creating a costume inspired by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, or Yet to Come. Use ethereal fabrics and creative accessories.
Christmas Cookie Baker: Combine a chef's hat and apron with some festive accessories to transform into a Christmas cookie baker. Carry a tray of pretend cookies to complete the look.
Christmas Ornament: Craft a round costume resembling a Christmas ornament. Decorate it with colorful fabric and shiny materials to mimic the appearance of ornaments on a tree.
Toy Soldier Nutcracker: Merge elements of a toy soldier costume with a nutcracker character. Use a nutcracker hat and incorporate soldier-inspired details into your outfit.
Santa's Reindeer Crew: Enlist friends to dress up as Santa's reindeer team. Each person can represent a different reindeer with coordinating outfits and antler headbands.
Tumblr media
Holiday Lights: Create a costume that mimics strings of Christmas lights. Use colorful LED lights and fabric to design a unique and eye-catching outfit.
Christmas Tree Topper Angel: Combine an angel costume with a Christmas tree topper. Attach a miniature tree to your headpiece and wear a flowing white dress with wings.
Penguin Caroler: Merge the charm of penguins with the tradition of Christmas carolers. Wear a tuxedo-style outfit and a small plush penguin accessory.
Santa's Lost Gift: Create a whimsical costume by portraying a "lost" Christmas gift. Wear a large gift box with wrapping paper and a tag that reads "To Santa."
Remember, the key is to have fun and let your imagination run wild. Don't be afraid to experiment with different ideas and materials to create a costume that reflects your personal style and captures the enchantment of the holiday season.

Thoughts on each of the royal ballet principals? Including Watson and Bonelli. I know they have retire this season. Also any promotion predictions for royal ballet? I wish ROH and other companies would do more streaming. One of the bright side of this horrible pandemic was ROH being available to me in America
Wow, there is so much to address here, please bear with me anon (I'll try to be as brief but exhaustive as possible. Let's start with the male principals at RB, who make the best set of male pricipals around, imo: Vadim Muntagirov: He's my absolute favorite, hands down. His reputation preceeds him, I think: a monster of technique, high jumps, seems to defy gravity, he's incredibly light and quite when he lands, his port de bras is to die for, just like his lines, he's an incredible partner (look how popular he his among ballerinas, but also, you can see yourself how careful and considerate he always is with them, and he always makes them look fantastic) and has wonderful musicality. He's not the strongest actor of the company peraphs, but I still think he's underrated on that front (also, he's been constantly improving over the years): he always manages to move me one way or another, and I think he does the best Siegfried and De Grieux out there. He's the brightest jewel of the crown, really. Matthew Ball: I love him so much. He’s up there in the top 3 actors of the company for sure. He’s so charismatic, expressive and has such a strong, charming stage presence that you just cannot not look at him. I think he's a fantastic partner, and even though his technique might not always be the strongest compared to that of other principals, it's still very good. He just has the whole package for me.
William Bracewell: (finally!!!) Beautiful, beautiful dancer. He has such wonderful, graceful arms and lyricism in his movement. I think him too one of the best actors in the company, with an amazing range (look at his Romeo and then to his Hamlet). His promotion was long overdue.
Steven Mcrae: it's truly a shame that he's so prone to injury, because he's amazing. He's a very complete dancer, I think: his technique is always on point, his jumps are great, his musicality is very good and he has range as an actor. Admittedly I find him better suited for characters with a strong personality (Rudolph and Oberon to name a few) and less for princely, lover boy roles, but he still manages to pull them off well. Very strong stage presence for sure.
Marcelino Sambè: a terrific artist. He really gives his all when he's on stage, and he's wonderful in both joyous and dramatic roles. He also has really powerful jumps, and exudes lots of energy. His partnering skills are the weakest element in his skill set, I think, but nothing that can't be improved.
Alexander Campbell: I enjoy his dancing a lot. He's a really good actor, and I really like his arms, especially his hands. There's something about his movement that makes him look both energetic and delicate at the same time (I'm not sure how to describe it better), which I find very endearing. Also, he's generally very smooth and precise.
Federico Bonelli: he wasn't a favorite, but I still enjoyed his performances and his interpretation of characters. He was a good partner too, but I think that he was the weakest principal when it comes to technique: he often lacked precision, and sometimes he would look kind of messy. Still, I always looked forward to see him in something, and he'll be missed.
Ryoichi Hirano: He's good, but I prefer him in modern ballets rather than classics. He's great at playing villains or comic characters (I especially like his Leonte), but I don't find him very convincing in other roles. I really like his partnering.
Edward Watson: he was great in contemporary ballets, and at playing characters like Rudolph, and other similar ones, but other than that I think he lacked range.
Reece Clarke: I have never seen him in a lead role, only in soloist roles, but so far I just really don't care about his dancing. I just haven't noticed anything particularly remarkable about him, he's just kind of...there, idk. I might change my mind in the future, should I see him in lead roles, but for now this is how I feel.
Corrales: I'm not a fan. He has lots of energy, the technique, and fiery jumps and turns, but I think he's artistically very immature, and monodimensional. I always feel like he's on the stage only to show off, and I find it annoying. Technique is very important, but the point of ballet is to tell stories and sell characters to the audience, and he's not there yet. Also, I think he could work on his partnering skills.
About the promotions: To Principal: I correctly guessed that both Bracewell and Clarke would have been promoted, and obviously they aren't going to promote any more female dancers, considering that there is no obvious candidate, and that they just promoted 3 all at once. To First Soloist: Sissens for sure, and likely Isabella Gasparini and/or Gina Storm-Jensen To Soloist: Lukas B. Brændsrød, Leo Dixon, Mariko Sasaki, Leticia Dias, Ashley Dean (and maybe Annette Buvoli? They have given her Myrtha!) To First artist: Joonhyuk Jun, Taisuke Nakao, Sae Maeda, Julia Roscoe, and maybe Katharina Nikelski I also think that they're going to keep: Marco Masciari, Daichi Ikarashi, Hanna Park and Viola Pantuso.
Lastly, I'm all for more streamings too. I actually think they should concentrate on internet streamings more than the cinema ones: they're just easier to access for everyone and probably less expensive for them, if they're not live.
Thanks for the ask, anon <3
