A few times recently I’ve mentioned that I’ve been making a series of dreamcasts entirely with actors who have certain names that are already common for Six actors. Finally got a few of them finished up and queued! First up: the Courtne(e/y)s!

Courtney Stapleton - Bat Out Of Hell Cast Appreciation 2023 (19)
Courtney Stapleton played the role of Goddesilla (Swing) in the Manchester, London Coliseum, Toronto (2017) and London Dominion productions of Bat Out Of Hell.
How come Courtney Stapleton's costume didn't have suspenders? Or if it did and they managed to find a way to hide them, how come they haven't used that method for other Parr costumes?
As far as I know her pants had snaps that connected to the skin toned leotard waist.
A thing you should remember about the original WE costumes (and basically everything up to the pandemic if we are being honest) is that six was still figuring out how to make them. Weird materials in unconventional silhouettes that have to last for 8 shows a week for at least a year is not an easy thing to achieve. So the earliest costumes had a ton of experimentation into them.
The earliest pants (Maiya's) didnt have suspenders, instead they were attached to the midriff skin toned mesh, which in turn held them up. Courtney's pants were made with the same system. In theory that works and avoids the black lines between top and pants. Also Courtney didn't have a peplum which means her pants were lighter and could be held up with snaps. But snaps have the disadvantage of creating tension in small spots of the fabric which in turn leads to those areas tearing faster.
As costumes moved towards functionality and durability, and the peplums were added. Suspenders became a safer method to keep the pants in place.
nothing could’ve prepared me to find out 2 years later that courtney stapleton was originally intended to be uk tour seymour before she joined beauty and the beast Oh we were robbed
“to be a proud queer person of color playing a disney princess…is the epitome of me going back and saying to my seven-year-old self, ‘you can be anything that you want to be, and all you have to do is be yourself.’ and to be that for the next generation is an honor.” (x)
Is Harriet Watson the only actress to cover all 6 queens in the exact same costume? I don’t think she had any variations?
A few others also reached swingo with just one costume variation:
Grace Mouat (only during the UK Tour), Courtney Stapleton, Collette Guitart (eventually got variations but originally debuted all six queens with her original skirt), Harriet Watson
Quite a number of other queens also only had one variation but didn’t wind up debuting all the queens.
At this point I don’t think it’s a secret that I love Anastasia. I grew up on the movie and was absolutely thrilled when the musical adaptation was announced. It had been announced way back in 2017 that the West End would be staging a production. The production never materialized, but since a few of the actors I’d wanted to see were in Six I thought I’d make a dreamcast entirely with Six actors!
Anastasia is a particularly demanding show dance-wise, and requires a level of ballet/pointe/partnering training that most musical theatre actors don’t have. Many productions have actually had to cast professional ballet dancers, which Six does not have. As such I was really intentional in only casting actors that I could prove or reasonably assume had that required level. Tracking all that down has been a lot of work over a long period of time and tended to be fairly limiting, but with a few more additions in recent months I think I’ve finally gotten a group who can do it! I’m pretty happy with it and while I doubt a West End production will happen now...it’s still a fun one to dream about.

A few additional notes on the ballet: All four of the sisters, as well as both swings, are required to have a pretty solid level of proficiency and experience with dancing en pointe. One of the sisters, Olga/Odette, is required to have a significant higher level (this is the track they often cast professional ballerinas for). I also needed two actors who could feasibly dance at that level as understudies. My parameters for proving that someone could most likely do that role included being able to find videos of them doing pointe work at the required level OR other certain indicators that I felt like proved they could most likely do it (e.x. - experience in a a specific show/track that would require an equivalent level of pointework).
