Green energy is in its heyday.
Renewable energy sources now account for 22% of the nation’s electricity, and solar has skyrocketed eight times over in the last decade. This spring in California, wind, water, and solar power energy sources exceeded expectations, accounting for an average of 61.5 percent of the state's electricity demand across 52 days.
But green energy has a lithium problem. Lithium batteries control more than 90% of the global grid battery storage market.
That’s not just cell phones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and tools. Scooters, e-bikes, hybrids, and electric vehicles all rely on rechargeable lithium batteries to get going.
Fortunately, this past week, Natron Energy launched its first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the U.S.
“Sodium-ion batteries offer a unique alternative to lithium-ion, with higher power, faster recharge, longer lifecycle and a completely safe and stable chemistry,” said Colin Wessells — Natron Founder and Co-CEO — at the kick-off event in Michigan.
The new sodium-ion batteries charge and discharge at rates 10 times faster than lithium-ion, with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 cycles.
Wessells said that using sodium as a primary mineral alternative eliminates industry-wide issues of worker negligence, geopolitical disruption, and the “questionable environmental impacts” inextricably linked to lithium mining.
“The electrification of our economy is dependent on the development and production of new, innovative energy storage solutions,” Wessells said.
Why are sodium batteries a better alternative to lithium?
The birth and death cycle of lithium is shadowed in environmental destruction. The process of extracting lithium pollutes the water, air, and soil, and when it’s eventually discarded, the flammable batteries are prone to bursting into flames and burning out in landfills.
There’s also a human cost. Lithium-ion materials like cobalt and nickel are not only harder to source and procure, but their supply chains are also overwhelmingly attributed to hazardous working conditions and child labor law violations.
Sodium, on the other hand, is estimated to be 1,000 times more abundant in the earth’s crust than lithium.
“Unlike lithium, sodium can be produced from an abundant material: salt,” engineer Casey Crownhart wrote in the MIT Technology Review. “Because the raw ingredients are cheap and widely available, there’s potential for sodium-ion batteries to be significantly less expensive than their lithium-ion counterparts if more companies start making more of them.”
What will these batteries be used for?
Right now, Natron has its focus set on AI models and data storage centers, which consume hefty amounts of energy. In 2023, the MIT Technology Review reported that one AI model can emit more than 626,00 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent.
“We expect our battery solutions will be used to power the explosive growth in data centers used for Artificial Intelligence,” said Wendell Brooks, co-CEO of Natron.
“With the start of commercial-scale production here in Michigan, we are well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for efficient, safe, and reliable battery energy storage.”
The fast-charging energy alternative also has limitless potential on a consumer level, and Natron is eying telecommunications and EV fast-charging once it begins servicing AI data storage centers in June.
On a larger scale, sodium-ion batteries could radically change the manufacturing and production sectors — from housing energy to lower electricity costs in warehouses, to charging backup stations and powering electric vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and so on.
“I founded Natron because we saw climate change as the defining problem of our time,” Wessells said. “We believe batteries have a role to play.”

Some moments in season 3 of Young Royals that stand out for me ep.3
The day went on, I came back from work, recorded and sent my audition video for singing competition so I'm ready for another rewatch of episode 3, season 3. Let's go!
My posts about previous episodes are here and here
Simon telling Linda what she needs to hear
Tumblr media
I mean - this is another unspoken fact most of us could see in season 1 and 2- Simon protect his mom and Sara for no matter what cost. We saw it with the bill from school after he took some extra lessons, we hear it now straight up from Simon.
Satisfying.
2. Running?
Tumblr media
That was somehow a surprise for me. Like... he runs? Princes do that?!?!?! Kidding. But I immediately compared it to August's way of handling things... So... Wille is actually trying to help himself...? Wille why don't you go talk to Boris?
3. Safety first
Tumblr media
Simon wearing helmet while going with Rosh and ayub on scooters. Finally.
4. Simon crying
Tumblr media
I couldn't breathe. My friends needed to remind me to breathe. The way Wille diminished the comments meaning and left Simon alone with all that was just heartbreaking.
5. School Inspectorate arrival
Tumblr media
I mean it's about the music again. My friend was like "what is it with this music!?", and another one screamed "what? the school inspectors are here! What is it you don't understand!?". And it has such a Skam vibe. I feel like this season is the most Skamlike of them all. What do you think?
6. Wilmon kissing on the piano.
Tumblr media
Iconic. Very classic. I'm glad we have something like this scene with a gay couple. And it's so cool that this gay couple happened to be Wilmon.
Also Simon's hand, pulling Wilhelm down with him. Ooh!
7. Poppe!
Tumblr media
I was just happy I see him again <3 But also, it was so good to see him there for Felice. And them talk.
Also, I don't know what is it with those fathers, but I could find some of my father in Micke and Poppe this season and that really warmed my heart.
8. THOSE HANDS?!
Tumblr media
I felt like I shouldn't look. AND NOONE WARNED ME! Like really...
Tumblr media
Why so fvcking hot gay?
9. Valborg
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The music, the fire. As my friend said: Swedes are freaking wizards.
10. This moment
Tumblr media
The whole sequence. Bottom Wille. But this moment. It makes me feel like I'm gonna pass out bc of the amount of electricity in this scene. But this exact moment is my favourite.
11. Micke
Tumblr media
Heart attack. this is what this series does really good. Makes you feel what the character feels. I thought I will jump out of my body.
12. Simon sharing photo from 1st May
Tumblr media
Like, after all of this... He's there, it's already ok. Why sharing it and causing more attention... Siiimoooon.
Tumblr media
Yikes...
I laughed hard though... It turned out so wrong xDDDD
13. The end of the episode
Tumblr media
Well... I have already seen it in a trailer, but the way it came in the episode... What did you said about breathing? Oh, I forgot to continue one.
Tomorrow is the day. Oh, I'm so sad I can't be in Stockholm. But I believe in ancient spirits that walk on this earth and protect us all, so mine will go tomorrow to Stockholm to hug some people who saved me by creating Young Royals.
Goodnight, beautiful fandom!

Do you have any personal thoughts on the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois? I've been going since I was a little kid and I personally love it- I'm really glad to see them making some (in my own, unprofessional opinion) much-needed renovations to their bottlenose dolphin exhibit.
It’s a nice facility, and I’m glad they’re doing the needed updates to dolphins and more. The Tropics House expansion has really been necessary for a while so it was great to finally see one announced - I love that their apes will get to go outside!
My other thought: it’s toooo big! I cannot physically get through that zoo in a single day, and a lot of that is crossing between areas. I know that’s part of the history of the facility and how the land was originally used, but it frustrates me to not be able to see the whole zoo in a day given how expensive the ticket cost is. The tram helps, but I wish things were a little more compact - especially since the electric scooters require reservations and can’t be rented the day of, e.g. if you end up being unable to walk the whole day.
I don’t have a ton more specific thoughts, because the most recent time I went was pretty much just to see a friend on staff and I didn’t explore the facility a ton, and I’m sure it’s changed in the 5+ years since my second-most-recent visit.

Ontario set up a new initiative for people without cars, they've set up electric scooters across the province, using cities that have agreed to try it out.
These scooters are paid for, you use an app to rent one, it's cheaper than a taxi, however, each has a GPS tracker, an automatic electronic lock and cost roughly 5-10 grand each.
All the scooters downtown have already been taken apart for scrap by the crackheads.

Big Oil faces a tiny foe on the streets of Asia and Africa. The noisy, noxious vehicles that run on two and three wheels, carrying billions of people daily, are quietly going electric — in turn knocking down oil demand by one million barrels a day this year. ... The global majority doesn’t roll on four wheels. In Nairobi and Hanoi, motorcycles serve as taxis. In Mumbai, scooters can carry a family of four. In China, electric bicycles are how millions commute. “Electric bikes are quieter, much more efficient and good for the environment,” said Jesse Forrester, the founder of Mazi Mobility, which has 60 electric motorcycle taxis, known as boda-bodas, on the roads in Nairobi. “There’s a quiet revolution now in Kenya driving this transformation for the future.” .... In Darbhanga, a new acid-battery rickshaw, like the one Mr. Rai drives, sells for around 175,000 rupees, or $2,100. That’s half the price of a new rickshaw powered by natural gas. Charging the battery costs 20 rupees (25 cents), one-fourth of the price of filling a gas tank. The rebates seem to be working. Reliance Industries, India’s biggest company, is converting its three-wheeled cargo vehicles from gas to electric. Food delivery services are going electric as quickly as possible.

Fucked up that if I want to rent an electric wheelchair/scooter to get around the state fair, that I have to pay $70. Like oh able bodied people get to go to the fair and only pay for a ticket ($18) to get in and enjoy the fair, but if you’re disabled and need a mobility aid you have to cough up those 18$ to get in then another 70$ to be able to just move around the fair.
I have a rollator I use but for things where I would have to be walking for hours, there’s no way for me to physically do that outside of a wheelchair, and while I can use a manual wheelchair by myself on level ground, I can’t manage that on uneven crowded streets and outdoor areas. So the only option is to rent a scooter. The cost of me getting in and getting a scooter could pay for 4 peoples tickets.
