Act of Contrition
James Patrick March x Virgin! Reader.
Inspired by a post by @ahsjpm
On Halloween night, you’re alone as James is participating in Devils night. As a Christian, you’re often modest and found in prayer. But James habits inspire you to engage in your deepest fantasies.
WARNINGS! Porn with little plot. Virgin! Reader. Violence! Murder! Oral! Male and female recieving! Bondage! Light degrading! Dom! Reader. Sub! James. Brief PnV! Use of religion disrespectfully lol.
Your fingers were locked together as your nostrils inhaled the warm meal in front of you. Your prayers typically were kept short during dinner time, as you were eager to dive in but tonight you needed the strength. It was Halloween. You opened your eyes, resisting the urge to scratch at your lash line. You didn’t want to ruin your makeup.
“You still pray? Honey, you’re sleeping with a ghost. If there’s a God, I think he forgot about this place.” Sally taunted you.
Your partner, James Patrick March wasn’t with you tonight. Opting you to sit at one of the tables in the main lobby of the Cortez. The spirits of this building kept you company whenever James was away and they were the only company he somewhat trusted with you. Tonight was the infamous Devils night along with the celebration of the holiday.
You hadn’t been with James very long. Sally was incorrect on your intimate status with him but you didn’t dare correct her. James explained that the ghosts of past murderers dined with him on this occasion and frankly, you were too afraid to participate.
He chastised you only briefly before he understood. It was something you cherished about him. He tried his best to accommodate your apprehensions. You toyed with the fork after you took a bite. You almost ordered a alcohol beverage but often you and James would enjoy a night cap.
You dressed up. It was primarily a joke since your modest dressing drew criticism from others. Knee high fishnet stockings up your thicker thighs, wider than a majority of women. A black hip length coat, a low cut white shirt that accentuated your full breasts. A wide black cross in the center. Your hair was styled last minute. Your makeup was dark and sultry as you gingerly tried to eat without smudging your lipstick.
Your high heels clicked together as you shifted in your chair.
“Sally, be easy on the girl. Let her enjoy her faith in peace.” Liz interjected but you knew she was joking. They sat adjacent to you. You didn’t blame them for mocking your beliefs given their current states as ghosts but James never ridiculed you.
Before sleeping, you lowered yourself to your knees and prayed for the safety of yourself and your family. The first night when James saw you, you expected him to laugh but instead, he gave you a warm smile and said, “I’ll give you a moment of privacy, my dear.”
A sensation of tugging brought your attention back to the present. You looked up, Sally was toying with the chain of your wrap around cross bracelet. Her dark lipstick was smudged from drinking but she gave you a quick smile anyway. She pulled out her phone, her lifeline. “Do you mind?”
You were camera shy by nature but Sally had few pleasures. You nodded. “Yes. Do you want to take a picture of my bracelet or my whole costume?”
“Your whole outfit. Everyone will want to see a slutty nun.” You huffed but obliged.
You modeled for her and she finally broke out into a pleased grin. She stepped away from you, typing away and you smooth your shirt. You weren’t hungry anymore, too preoccupied with James activity. Could you do it? Bypass your fears and join him? You missed him and his affectionate gestures.
You straightened your shoulders with a resolution. “Don’t worry about your plate, I’ll get it.” Your head snapped towards Liz’s direction. As if she was reading your mind.
You could do this. You could be brave. James wouldn’t let anyone hurt you. And you could run quickly if you needed.
The hallways felt closed in, daunting like a countdown as you trailed toward James room. You quieted your breathing to somehow conceal your vulnerability. With the dimmed lights, it was difficult to keep steady in your heels as you narrowed in towards his door. Your hand wrapped around the handle, a quiet noise of scraping came as your bracelet scratched the gold.
Pushing the door, you blinked as the brighter light peeked at you as you stepped inside.
You opened your mouth to greet James but you froze. Several other men were at the table but they weren’t sitting. Instead, they stood and started cheering. Wildly clapping and chanting, “Ten commandments killer!” Your hand went to your mouth.
James held a man by his hair with one hand and his other continuously rammed his long blade all over his torso. His knife plunged deep and with purpose. Your teeth chattered as he yanked it free and slit it across his throat. Blood coated his hands, danced on his normally immaculate suit and even splattered on his face. His smile was wicked and he started to laugh. Proudly and heartily from his chest.
“James,” You whispered in fear. It wasn’t loud enough to be heard but somehow another presence caught his attention and he met your terrorized stare.
James smile immediately dropped and he released his victim. “Darling-“ He tried to speak in a alarmingly gentle tone in contrast to his animalistic action.
You spun around on your heels and ran out. You didn’t take off your shoes so you couldn’t sprint but the surrounding rooms blurred together. Across the hallway was a balcony and you cling to the rails. Your fingers tighten around the white bars and you pant. He slaughtered again. Brutally. Your bravery was misplaced. You should have stayed downstairs.
But this small moment of terror could never erase your feelings for him.
You closed the bedroom door behind you after an hour passed. You pressed your back against the wood. You needed the time to think. Consider how to approach James with your feelings. You prayed. Begged God to give you clarity and strength. Sitting on the bed, you contemplated taking off your costume, Halloween was nearly over now. You weren’t in the mood to go out and celebrate. You didn’t want to be without him.
But he lied to you. He promised he wouldn’t hurt anyone again.
He needs to endure the consequences.
Standing, you intended to go the bathroom and wash off your makeup when a voice caught your attention.
“Y/n, my love.” James’s eyes were glazed over with regret as you faced him.
He engulfed your hands and pulled you close to him. His lips pressed against your neck with urgency, “Darling, you weren’t supposed to see this. I know you disapprove.” You stepped away from him and set your mouth.
“James. I just wanted to be with you tonight. But you insist on traditions. Of course I want to honor this but to walk in on such a thing, it’s madness.” You went to step away from him but he rushed around. Gripping your shoulders.
“My dear, I can’t be in ill standing with you. Tell me what I can do. Tell me how to earn your forgiveness.” You shook your head, crossing your arms but something…tightened in you. At the account of his pleas.
James Patrick March wasn’t one to ask for forgiveness. He didn’t show remorse. And he never showed a shred of submission. Being a partner to a ghost wasn’t morally clear according to Christianity. You couldn’t hold him to the same standards as a human. In his past, he was a killer. Despite his promises that he grew tired of murder, you couldn’t remove the gleeful grin across his face as he slashed a man’s throat from your mind.
James enjoyed the applause. It seemed to drive him. Attention. Praise. Devotion. You always knew once you gave into him, that he would pry every ounce of worship from you.
You would offer it. Without a single thought of resistance.
He lowered himself down, fingers ghosting over your clothes as he settled on his knees before you. His wide palms cupped your thighs and his black gaze torturously raked over your stockings. “You look irresistible, my little mouse. Powerful. Whatever you want, I’ll do it. I am your slave, y/n. Take me however you wish.”
Your bracelet covered hand cupped his cheek, stroking his skin with your thumb. A darkness clouded you, deep and hungry urges clawed inside you like a disease. You couldn’t resist anymore. He willing to abide every command.
Fuck it.
“James, you need to cleanse your conscience. Confess to me. Tell me how wrong it was.” You lifted your chin and his brows raised. A sign of hope.
“This is a religious practice, yes? Do you want me to pray, my love? I will for you.”
“Tell me how bad you were. How could you disobey me?” Your voice was lower, husky and it caused him to shiver.
“I shouldn’t have. I-I don’t want you to be cross with me. My only desire is to see you happy. Perhaps I became too carried away. Determined to gain the respect of my fellow man.”
“You wanted their attention. You enjoyed that man bleeding in front of you. Oh, James. That’s so sad…how pathetic could you be?” His hands clung to your hips.
“Yes, pathetic-“ You clutched his chin in your hand, hard enough that his eyes widened.
“Beg. Beg God for forgiveness. If you really meant what you said about making me happy.”
He was resisting inwardly, you knew that. But you counted on his love for you to override it. He tilted his head down and started whispering.
“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you-“ You stepped out of his embrace and you released him.
“I said pray to God, James. That’s not correct.” James stumbled and tried to grab your arm.
“I’m doing what you asked.”
“I am your God.”
The silence echoed after your direction but James appeared to be stunned. His breathing was heavier as he slowly scanned your heels, legs, stomach and now your breasts. “Darling, if you make me scream your name, would that count as praying?” He asked with a growing smirk.
You beckoned him with a finger. “Crawl to me, James. Show me how repentant you are.” He was fast to oblige. His large hands held his weight as he moved and he settled on the back of his calves when he reached you.
James touched his palms together, staring up at you. “Please forgive me, y/n. I beg you. I promise I’ll listen. I promise I will never disobey you. And I promise I will get on my knees everyday if you allow me to touch you.”
Your mouth curved in a satisfied smile. “Was that so hard? But I’m afraid this is just the beginning. I want you to go to the bed.”
He practically jumped to his feet and prowled to the bed. You trailed after him, flicking the cross between your fingers as a thrill ignited in your bones. It was obscene to use Gods name in vain like this. To pretend you were the highest power. But it was too delicious to see such a dark man beg and not give into your temptation. You would just have to go to church more often after tonight.
You took ahold of his suspenders and yanked him close. Chest to chest. “You’ll do anything?” You proposed.
“Of course, kitten. I could never disobey my God.”
You smashed your lips against his, not giving a shit about your lipstick. Your arms encircled his broad shoulders and his hands captured your middle, hips and then they cupped your ass. He moaned as you bit his lower lip and pulled. His tongue swept your mouth and you met it with your own. He lifted you by your thighs, his strength evident by the way he made your curvy body feel weightless.
He fell back on the bed and you straddled him. James ripped away from the kiss, red product smeared on his mouth. He latched onto your skirt, hiking it over your thighs and his fingers brushed against the growing wet spot of your underwear. You swallowed and shook your head. Normally, you were too insecure to entertain this. A part of you wanted to run away and hide. But you pushed back those thoughts and wildly took off your underwear.
As if reading your mind, James assisted in sliding you higher until you were above his face. Tearing off your jacket, James shoved you down, his tongue licking a stripe. You nearly screamed at the foreign contact. He circled your clit before laying his tongue flat. Your hands braced on his chest as you rolled your pelvis against the pace of his mouth. His lips suckled your clit and he gently let his teeth give it a tug.
He moaned, a pretty sound that you needed more of. “Fuck,” he said in-between lapping your pussy. He didn’t swear often so you knew this was a special occasion. You continued humping his face as a rush of heat flushed your face and your entrance tightened. You were close.
He started to shift, “I need you underneath me. I need to feel you cum while I’m fucking you.”
You maneuvered yourself down enough so he could talk as you gripped his jaw. “Good boys take what I give them. If you’re not, I’ll have to walk away-“ you didn’t finish as James jerked you back into place. Getting the point.
He dipped his tongue inside before it resumed working over the sensitive bud in the center and you stilled as you reached your peak. You shook as you chased your high. You moved off of his face and his chin was wet but he didn’t wipe it off. “Darling, you are ravishing. I could spend an eternity between your legs if you allowed me.”
A lightening burst of bravery surged you onto your own knees. Your heels giving you a modest boost as you practically ripped off James trousers and threw them across the room. Pausing, your eyes took in his raised dick in the confines of his boxers. He supported himself on his elbows as you licked your lips.
“If you behave yourself, then maybe I’ll let you fuck me. Don’t cum unless I say you can.”
You pulled down his underwear, feeling the heat rise from him as his swollen, heavy cock hung as it leaked precum. You were intimidated by his size but you refused to let him see fear.
Sticking out your tongue, you licked his tip before going along the side. James grunted as you wrapped your hand around the base, taking it into your mouth. He shuddered as you bobbed your head up and down as you went further, pumping him at the same time.
“That’s-thats not fair, mouse-“ He whispered harshly and you tried not to smirk.
He started thrusted into your mouth, hitting the back of your throat but you breathed through your nose to keep from gagging. Hollowing your cheeks, you sucked faster and he clenched his fists.
“Y/n, please. I’m going to cum-this is-“ You shook your head causing James’s head to jerk back.
A creamy liquid shot down in your mouth and you removed yourself. He chanted your name and God as you watched with a quirked eyebrow.
James lifted up, “Y/n. Surely you know that I was never going to win that game. Please, allow me to take you. I promise I will-“
“Another promise, James? I meant what I said. Now, I’m going to have to punish you.” Standing, you grabbed his belt and wrestled his arms down, pinning his wrists together. You bound them tightly and gently smacked his face. “You’re not allowed to touch me. If you break free, I’ll leave you here. Do you understand?”
James moved his head in a short nod.
“Do you understand, James? Is that anyway to answer me?” You taunted.
“Yes, I understand.” He ground through his teeth. You knew the submission was killing him
You balanced on your knees before grabbing his dick. You lined it up with your pussy and sank down. James whimpered, actually whimpered and you groaned from pleasure. And a small stretch of pain. You felt full but the hilt of his pelvis hit your clit.
You rocked your hips, your eyes fighting to stay open from James meeting your pace. His hands, despite being tied, attempted to touch you.
“James. I told you to keep your hands down.” You scolded with a half serious tone. James was looking at you with fuck me eyes as you used him.
You lifted off him, taking your discarded coat and wiping your inner thighs.
“Darling, I’m sorry. No, please. Please allow me to make you finish. My pet, I don’t know what’s gotten ahold of me. I don’t know why I can’t seem to listen-“
“Who said I was done with you?” You questioned and his mouth fell. You had reached for his cane. Holding it across your body, you unsheathed the hidden knife. It was still covered in blood. Half naked, you still had your heels on.
“James. I suggest you start praying again.”

random mayans thoughts, 5x10 aka series finale edition:
on a personal note: the more I use the word fuck the more mad I am. so no one make "how many times did she say fuck" a drinking game, you'll end up with alcohol poisoning tonight.
- Miguel brought the letters and photos to Felipe's funeral and hadn't EZ run his fucking mouth he would've finally told him and Angel, who spotted the letters anyway, that they're brothers. fucking hell, we spent FOUR SEASONS invested in the they're brothers storyline and what came of it? ultimately nothing. what was all of that for when there was no resolution whatsoever?! fucking disappointing and frustrating. and why the fuck did Potter call Felipe "Ignacio Cortez" when he showed up? his name was Ignacio CORTINA, you fucking morons. writers can't even remember their own characters' names, huh?
- I fucking hate what they did to Miguel this season. and I'm not even talking about murdering him, I'm talking about how they first changed his entire life's history to some shit that didn't make sense at all, that Felipe knew the entire time he's his father, the letters and photos popping up out of thin air. and if that wasn't enough they insulted Miguel's intelligence because not for one second has he noticed how much Emily hates him? Miguel in season 2 sent Nestor to keep an eye on her when he didn't trust her, he knew she was lying to him. but this season, where she was even colder, more distant he doesn't see it? he seriously thought after everything, they could just start over fresh and she'd be fine and love him like nothing ever happened? who is this person that looks like Miguel Galindo? this is not the man I knew and fell in love with. the Miguel I knew would've never let his guard down like that, only to be murdered in a way he never even saw coming. it's such a big fucking disappointment and I'm so mad, I feel like my skin is on fucking fire. and what's even worse in all of that is that Emily got away with everything. how did the camera not catch when she asked Luis to carry Cristobal upstairs? they must've heard that he was nowhere near when Miguel went down. or when he came running back down yelling after the shot? how did that not end up on the audio?
- that "war" at the Sons clubhouse did not feel like a war at all. hell, it was a lot worse when the Mayans came for the Vatos Maldiots back in season 2 and there were a lot less Mayans with a lot more and heavier guns at the time. it was hard to follow everyone on screen because of the fast fight sequences and camera angles but Guero delivered some good punches, I just know he had a ton of fun. Isaac got what he deserved, I just didn't think he'd go out this early in the episode.
- as fucked up as the episode is as a whole, Bottles putting his glasses on Guero and them joking around at the party was a fun moment and damn, that man looks cute with glasses, lmao.
- Marcus has given up the club life for good, Izzy gave birth to their baby boy and they're a happy family. life is good for them. when Bishop came to visit, that was an actual sweet scene, him assuring Alvarez that he's doing the right thing.
- fucking Downer, he changed his mind and wanted to help Cielo get away but she panicked. I get it in a way, she's just a normal chick who got caught up in that life and what are you gonna do when you think they're coming to kill you? defend yourself. but man, it was unexpected and it hurts. and then she turns herself in and gives Potter the ammo he needed all along to come for the whole club.
- Letty is on a revenge path but was it just me who thought that maybe a revolver with only, what?, 6-8 rounds would've been her own death? now she's back with the Broken Saints instead and we won't ever find out but I'm sure that return didn't go over so well either. I'm not saying they killed her but she definitely has a lot of explaining to do before they take her back in. at least she rescued Sally, that poor dog has seen enough.
- the Reyes brothers talking on that bridge was a good scene too, Angel realizing that he has to leave to live for his son. I hate that he never found out Luisa died, he still thinks she just up and left them. even if painful, he would have deserved that closure. but what did he mean with "you put the Mayans on top" because that's not true. not even a little bit. their entire pipeline blew up. even if it hadn't ended the way it did, they would have been neck deep in trouble with the other MCs, with Cole and Grant, with the prisons. we spent a whole season watching them fight for that pipeline and again, what did we get? ultimately nothing. no resolution. no end. just a whole lot of plot holes so big you could drive a truck through them, which is fucking frustrating.
- that scene in the templo was fucking brutal, even for my standards. I predicted EZ would die slowly and painfully in front of a lot of people but holy fucking shit, everyone taking a stab at him is not the method I thought of. man, Clayton really pissed off someone in that writers room because Angel lost, with exception of his son, everything and everyone in half a season. and while yes, EZ the rat had to go, doing it was not just brutal on Angel. everyone seemed to struggle to wrap their heads around what was happening. but hey, they finally patched in Nestor, he earned it. and so did Bottles for killing Sofia. if they were gonna eliminate Cielo for knowing too much, naturally Sofia had to go to. just that whole pregnancy thing was completely unnecessary. I’m glad Angel and his son got out in time before the raid and can live their life free. I hope they get therapy as they recover from the tragedy they left behind, Mav might be young but he’s already been through a fuck ton.
- the ATF raid, I can't fucking believe Potter of all people has the upper hand and walks away free to do whatever fucked up thing he does next. I hate that there's no closure as to who lives and who died after they shot up the clubhouse because as a general rule I hate open endings. a couple weeks back, friends and I joked the military would just drop a bomb on Santo Padre and turn it into a parking lot, unbelievable that this wasn't even that far off... but we didn't get to see bodies so the status quo is that Guero is alive. he might have caught a bullet or three to the shoulder, maybe the stomach and a leg but he's alive and recovering! and yes, probably facing 25 to multiple life sentences but that’s still better than death. don't you dare come at me with canon and how no one survived, JD himself said in an EW interview "it is up to the imagination of the viewers". I lost Miguel, twice basically, so I'm not gonna lose Guero too, I need one win. if you disagree, that's your choice but this is where I plant my flag.
and that concludes not only season 5 but Mayans MC as a whole. it was a fucking mess and had been for years and I'm laughing at the thought that this is how they planned all along the show would end because seriously, it was kind of pathetic. I'm sure there is a lot more to be said about the hundreds of plot holes and loose ends they left us with but for right now, fuck this shit is exhausting, lol.

After monthslong fears of a national railroad strike, Congress voted Wednesday to force an end to negotiations between the railroads and their unions with a pair of bills designed to draw concessions from both sides.
One bill (which passed with 79 Republican votes and 211 Democratic ones) codified the higher wages the railroads were offering. Members of Congress also voted to implement mandatory sick time as part of the deal, a nod to worker demands for more paid time off that railroads were unwilling to relent on.
Tumblr media
That successful amendment, sponsored by Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio and independent Senator Bernie Sanders, came on the heels of bipartisan criticism of President Joe Biden's support of a deal without concessions for paid time off, a deal-breaker that earned scorn from progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez alongside conservatives like Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.
Tumblr media
Florida Senator Marco Rubio tweeted Tuesday he "will not vote to impose a deal that doesn't have the support of the rail workers."
Tumblr media
Ultimately, all but three Republican members of Congress—who, notably, have unlimited sick days and all 10 federal holidays off per year—still voted against it.
Internally, the result was largely expected. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy indicated to reporters prior to the vote few Republican members were expected to vote in favor of increasing paid time off.
Tumblr media
But outwardly, it's not clear why: So far, no Republicans have offered a public rationale for rejecting the deal, nor is it clear whether they opposed the concept of sick time or congressional intervention in railroad workers' efforts to negotiate the deal for themselves.
In early negotiations, the unions requested 15 days of sick leave, while the resolution adopted Wednesday notably had just seven. Numerous Democrats also voted against the larger bill to avert the strike, calling the compromise a betrayal of workers' desire to negotiate a contract on their terms.
However, the fact no Democrats voted against the sick time provision signaled to some that Republicans were voting to prevent workers from obtaining benefits they themselves have: namely, the ability to take time off work whenever they feel the need.
In an earlier vote in the Senate this year, North Carolina Republican Richard Burr and Mississippi Republican Roger Wicker introduced a resolution intended to resolve the strike that did not include provisions for sick leave, earning scorn from Sanders in a speech on the Senate floor. (The resolution failed.)
The disparity between railroaders and members of Congress was visibly on display on social media after the vote.
Notably, a Politifact examination of a Facebook post several years ago alleging similar claims determined there is no limit on sick days or time off for members of Congress, while a Bureau of Labor Statistics report from 2020 found the average private industry worker received an average of eight paid holidays, seven paid sick leave days and 11 paid vacation days per year after one year of work.
And while railroaders get anywhere between three to four weeks of paid vacation and over 10 personal leave days per year, many do not have the flexibility to use them the way people in other industries—like Congress—typically do.
"The 'working class party' strikes again," Justin Baragona, a media reporter for the Daily Beast, tweeted following the vote.

American Alternate Reality of the Gaza Genocide
Adnan Ahmed / Unicorn Riot
Looking at our social media feeds, it appears as if some of us are existing in a Pleasantville-esque parallel universe where a genocide… is not being livestreamed. People are posting vacation pictures and influencers are bragging about eating endless shrimp inside the White House amid a hunger strike happening outside to protest the killing of Palestinians.
Beyonce and Taylor Swift are screening their movies in Israel while Gazans are digging their family members out of rubble and carrying dismembered remains of their loved ones in plastic bags.
Meanwhile, across the U.S., institutions and politicians have been busy pledging allegiance to the ideals of Zionism and mislabeling criticism of Israel as antisemitism. when the number of killed Palestinians was in the tens of thousands — the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 888, which effectively attacks any form of organizing for Palestinian liberation and ignores the fact that Israel defines its existence in the ongoing brutal occupation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. The resolution was passed 412 to 1 and was supported by several members of The Squad, including U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY14), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY16) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN5). It was a thinly veiled attempt at equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism.
But it obviously did not go far enough for some members of the House and just days later they passed another resolution (House Resolution 894) that explicitly states, “anti-Zionism is antisemitism.”
The new resolution, apparently too blatantly racist to be supported by The Squad and a handful of Democrats and one Republican, still passed with a clear majority. Ninety-five Democrats voted to support HR 894.
Legislation against pro-Palestinian organizing has seen an uptick in recent years. Just four years ago, Democrats overwhelmingly voted for a resolution that passed the U.S. House rejecting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. BDS is an international peaceful movement seeking to end support for the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands. As of August 2023, over 30 states have passed anti-BDS legislation. …
President Trump signed an executive order that expanded Title VI of the 1964 Civil Right Acts to include discrimination based in antisemitism. The order directed institutions to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism which cites criticism of Israel as an example of antisemitism. …
President Biden, upon taking office, did not undo this executive order. Trump’s executive order — adopted by the Biden Administration as its policy — is now bearing fruit and Jewish students across the country are suing universities for Title VI violations, against the backdrop of increased campus activism opposing Israel’s atrocities.
This “moderate racism” is a clear example of how the Democratic Party tends to position itself just to the left of the Republicans. Democrats are experts at this game of creeping rightward while shifting focus from their own ineffectiveness and racist and discriminatory practices to highlighting the awfulness of their opponents — opponents that they often covertly support.
The Democratic Party actually spends money to bolster far-right candidates to make themselves seem palatable. They do this while cracking down on movements for Palestinian liberation, Black Lives Matter protests, trans rights, undocumented immigrants and unions to protect corporate interests.
The modern day Democratic Party has a legacy of racism in this country. President Roosevelt  sent over 125,000 Japanese-Americans into internment camps. Decades ago, Biden himself crafted legislation that allowed the U.S. to lead the world in its population of prisoners. President Obama was nicknamed the “deporter in chief” for authorizing a record number of deportations. Just in his first year in office, Obama authorized more drone strikes than his predecessor, George W. Bush, during his entire presidency. Despite voicing opposition to it while on the campaign trail, Biden has waived 26 federal laws, including environmental laws, to complete construction of Trump’s racist border wall. Unsurprisingly, the Democrats, staying true to their fundamentally rightwing nature, have largely supported Israel in its most recent attacks on Palestinians. …
Politicians, academics, institutional heads and celebrities too often only speak up for human rights when it benefits them. We don’t need to hold our breath waiting for them to do the right thing and we don’t need their permission to speak up. The victim-blaming ruling class alternate reality survives on our docility and obedience. It thrives on the conviction that we can be exploited and intimidated into submission.
We tend to either look the other way by willing ourselves to not see what is happening or are afraid of facing repercussions for speaking out. At the core of our silence lies a false belief that we are powerless and alone. That all we can do — and should do — is shut up, go to work and vote every few years for a new oppressor. This myth is being shattered by the massive support for Palestinians from regular people across the globe despite ongoing repression to deter us. The cause for Palestinian liberation is an opportunity for us to recognize our collective strength and realize that our silence is not worth allowing a genocide to continue.

A prominent Democrat and Jewish leader who served for decades as a New York lawmaker and now leads a group committed to fighting antisemitism announced Thursday he's leaving his lifelong political party and becoming a Republican, arguing Democrats have become "radicalized" and "turned their back" on the Jewish people.
"It's official: My wife and I have switched our party affiliation from Democrat to Republican!" Dov Hikind, who spent 36 years in the New York State Assembly and later founded Americans Against Antisemitism, tweeted.
"[People] have long been asking, 'Dov, when are you gonna leave the Democratic Party?' Well, the time has come [because] the Dems have turned their back on Jews & Israel, so it's officially done!"
Hikind's tweet included a video of him and his wife, Shani, explaining their decision to join the Republican Party.
"I have been a lifelong Democrat — my family, my parents. But that's over. That's finished," said Hikind. "I have decided to register as a Republican. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has become so radicalized … that people who are moderates or conservative Democrats are not welcomed in the Democratic Party, and I've had enough." Hikind added the Democratic Party "turns its back on its friends like Israel," criticizing the Biden administration for its policies toward the Jewish state. "I am delighted to join the Republican Party," Hikind added. "This is about sending a message — a message to the Biden administration, a message to the Democratic Party. We're losing the American people because you are not representing our values. You are not representing the Democratic Party that my parents were so proud of."
Hikind's announcement came one day after some progressive Democrats boycotted a speech by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who addressed a joint meeting of Congress to mark the 75th anniversary of Israel's founding. During his speech, Herzog gave a thinly veiled rebuke to members of the House for recent attacks on Israel.
"Criticism of Israel must not cross the line into negation of the state of Israel's right to exist," said Herzog. "Questioning the Jewish people's right to self-determination is not legitimate diplomacy. It is antisemitism. Vilifying and attacking Jews, whether in Israel, in the United States or anywhere in the world, is antisemitism."
Over the weekend, Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., caused an uproar by calling Israel a "racist state." Though she walked back her comments somewhat, they were still met with fierce criticism from both sides of the aisle.
GEORGIA DEMOCRAT DEFECTS TO GOP AFTER SHE SAYS DEMS 'CRUCIFIED,' 'ABANDONED' HER
The furor led Republicans to force a vote on a resolution that said Israel was neither a racist nor an apartheid state. The measure was overwhelmingly supported by all but ten Democrats — nine who voted "no" and one who simply voted "present." Jayapal voted with the majority that said Israel was not racist.
On Thursday, the same day as Hikind's announcement, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y, doubled down on calling Israel an "apartheid" state.
Hikind is hardly the first former or current Democrat lawmaker to recently switch parties.
Earlier this month, Mesha Mainor, a Democrat who has represented District 56 in the Georgia House since January 2021, announced she will switch her party registration to Republican.
"When I decided to stand up on behalf of disadvantaged children in support of school choice, my Democrat colleagues didn’t stand by me," Mainor told Fox News Digital at the time. "They crucified me. When I decided to stand up in support of safe communities and refused to support efforts to defund the police, they didn't back me. They abandoned me."
In April, state Rep. Jeremy LaCombe announced he had left the Democratic Party and would be registering as a Republican. At the time, he was the second Louisiana Democrat in less than a month to switch party affiliations after Louisiana state Rep. Francis Thompson gave Republicans in the state House a supermajority by switching his party affiliation.
The "modern-day Democratic Party has become unrecognizable to me and others across the state," North Carolina State Rep. Tricia Cotham said of her decision to switch parties. "I will not be controlled by anyone."
Overall, more than one million Americans have switched their party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in the last 12 months.

from the dark with you above me chapter 3
“Yeah,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great weekend.” ao3
“Tracey, just who I wanted to see” Jack said, approaching Tracey and Serena who were sitting in a booth by the window with salads and coffee. Abbie and Jack had similar plans for after they delivered their news, though they were both more sandwich people. Serena looked a little pink for half a second and coughed into her napkin. Abbie had the advantage of being prepared.
“Serena,” Jack acknowledged the other attorney’s presence.
“To what do we owe the pleasure?” Tracey asked, not bothering to conceal her annoyance at her meal being interrupted.
“Can’t I just be happy to see you?” Jack said with his characteristic smile.
“You could’ve expressed that joy this morning,” Tracey said returning his smile.
“My mistake,” Jack said. “No, I wanted to warn you,” he said, “Arthur is going to push for a plea on your Cortez case. Apparently there is pressure for a resolution from the mayor. Just thought you should be prepared.” Tracey nodded. Serena drummed her fingers against the table and sighed.
“Interesting,” Tracey said.
Abbie watched Serena as she lifted her latte and took a sip, as she licked the foam off of her lips. She was having trouble convincing herself last Friday had been a mistake. She enjoyed herself, but she couldn’t afford to get herself into a complicated situation like this one. She had a couple, very fun, lapses in judgment.
“It is,” Jack said.
“Well, I’ll talk to him,” Tracey said. “Thanks, Jack.”
“No problem,” he said. “Enjoy your lunch.”
Jack and Abbie ordered quickly, and when their sandwiches arrived, Jack asked a question Abbie was hoping to avoid.
“How was your weekend?”
Abbie tensed. “It was fine,” she said.
“Just fine?” Jack pried.
“Uneventful,” Abbie said, knowing he could pick up on her tone. He looked at her expectantly and she gave him more information. “I went out with some friends.” Jack seemed pleasantly surprised. “How was yours?” she asked.
“I didn’t do much. I read a novel.”
“Nice,” she said. “So about this motion.” --- Jack and Charlie were letting Abbie and Alex do most of the work for this case, even inside the courtroom. Tuesday saw them in the office late, buried in paperwork, poking at cold butter chicken.
“I’m starting to lose some hope,” Alex said.
“I’m not,” Abbie said, only half believing herself.
“I don’t believe you.”
“I’m being genuine.” Abbie turned a page and took a bite. The silence between the two of them had hardly settled in when Alex spoke again.
“Do you really think we shouldn’t cut a deal?” She asked. Abbie did not want to take a deal of any kind. On the other hand, Nash was a killer who had slipped through the DA’s fingers once before, and without the murder weapon, their evidence was thin. They could place him near the crime scene-- along with a hundred other people. He had been more careful this time and there had not been any bloody clothes in his closet. Nobody saw him drag the victim into the bathroom, nobody heard her scream. He wore a condom. It was as though a ghost had committed the crime. He even seemed to select his target arbitrarily, without a concrete motive they could present to the jury. If that wasn’t enough, thanks to a hearing that had not gone their way, they weren’t even able to mention the case Jack hadn’t been able to get a conviction on. His lawyer had suggested a deal a few days before, and once the weapon was definitely out of the picture, Jack and Charlie were amenable to the idea. As much as they wanted to win this at trial, they wanted Nash in prison. Abbie was the final holdout. She sighed.
“I certainly don’t want to.”
“But do you really think we can get a conviction? I mean, we’ve had four detectives going through this case with a fine tooth comb for weeks.”
Abbie waited a minute, thinking over what she could say next, but Alex beat her to it.
“Serena thinks it’s remarkable that Pierce would even suggest man one.”
The mention of Serena took her off guard.
“Serena has an opinion on our case?” She said, cold and annoyed. Serena had no standing. Alex exhaled a laugh.
“Serena has an opinion on everything.”
“I just don’t see why you would feel the need to consult with anybody but those of us who are actually on the case.” Alex smiled at her.
“Serena and I talk about everything. I trust her judgment and she trusts mine.”
“Well, I don’t know her well enough to agree,” she said. “The only perspectives that should matter are those of the attorneys and detectives on the case.”
“Right,” Alex said. “And everyone but you is on the same page.” Abbie couldn’t argue with that. She knew she would eventually be outvoted if this went on much longer.
“Look,” Abbie said. “Would you ask the detectives to canvass the gala guests one more time? Maybe someone has spontaneously remembered something.” It was a long shot, but she thought it could be worth it.
“Why can’t you do it?” Alex asked.
“Start with Benson, she can break the news. I’m sure she’ll be receptive” Abbie said. She had picked up on whatever was going on between Alex and the detective, they were not subtle. Alex considered it.
“I imagine she would be as receptive if you did the asking.”
“Sure,” Abbie said. They looked at each other, waiting for the other person to blink.
“Fine,” Alex said. “I’ll call her in the morning.”
“Thank you,” Abbie said.
---
Abbie collided with someone in the front doorway at One Hogan Place. Hot coffee splashed onto her from the opening of the plastic lid. Papers went flying from the other person’s arms.
“Sorry, sorry,” they said.
“Hi, Serena,” Abbie said, amused. Serena was hastily gathering what she had dropped. She looked up. Her face was faintly pink.
“Hi,” Serena said, out of breath, as she stood up, messy stack of papers in tow. “I was just headed to the courthouse.”
“Naturally,” Abbie said. She looked down at her sweater to assess the extent of the spill, cursing herself for wearing white today. Serena did not reply. “Well, it’s nice to see you,” Abbie said.
“You too,” Serena said. “I should,”
“Me too,” Abbie said, stepping back to let Serena out of the door.
As she walked upstairs, Abbie couldn’t help but think about how endearing Serena could be.
---
“Come in,” Abbie said in response to the knock at her door.
“Good news and bad news,” Olivia said.
“Oh great,” Abbie said, putting aside her pen.
“Good news is that we have a witness. The bad news is he’s the victim’s ex boyfriend who has multiple domestic violence complaints.” Abbie brought her hand to her temple. Of course it couldn’t be simple.
“I imagine that’s why he wasn’t forthcoming earlier.”
“Yep,” Olivia said. “I mean, can we still use him?”
“How credible is his account?”
“Very. He was following her around the ballroom and therefore he saw Nash pull her into the bathroom and heard him say ‘shut the fuck up bitch’ before it went silent. Then he, quote, ‘had another canapé.’”
“Jesus,” Abbie said. “Then yes, we should still be able to use him.”
“Can you try and exclude any mention of the domestic incidents?”
“Unfortunately not,” Abbie said. “And I have to tell the defense about them.” Olivia’s face fell. “I know. Ultimately it’s Jack and Charlie’s call whether or not to put him on the stand.”
“You can’t let him get away with this again,” Olivia said.
“I know,” Abbie said. “We’re doing everything within our power. Have you told everyone else?”
“No,” Olivia said. “Since you ordered the re-canvass, I thought I’d tell you first.”
“Thanks, detective Benson,” Abbie said, appreciative.
“Olivia,” she said. “No problem.” She was charming. Abbie saw what Alex saw in her. “I’m going to go tell everyone else.”
“Jack stepped out for some food but he’ll be back soon. Alex and Charlie are in his office.”
“Thanks,” Olivia said. Abbie picked up a slight disappointment in her voice.
--- “Shouldn’t you go home? It’s a Friday night,” Jack said, poking his head into her office. “It’s late.”
“I know you, of all people, are suggesting I neglect important work in favor of sleep.”
“On the contrary, Abbie, I of all people know how important sleep is.” A noise behind him made Jack turn around. “Serena,” he said. “I was just telling Miss Carmichael here to follow your example.”
Serena walked up next to him. She had on a nice black fall jacket and carried a brown briefcase. She looked tired, her hair was slightly disheveled. She smiled at Abbie and Abbie smiled back wider. She liked Serena’s smile. She was very expressive, which Abbie found both confusing and endearing.
“Actually, Tracey just kicked me out. Sorry to disappoint, Jack,” she said.
“And I am following her lead,” Jack said. “Let’s call you two a cab.”
“You can’t make me leave,” Abbie said, stubborn.
“Can’t I?” Jack said. As much as she hated to admit it, Abbie was ready to leave. She acquiesced, gathering her things. They were able to catch a cab quickly after they determined they were going in the same direction.
“Goodnight, ladies,” Jack said, opening the door for them.
“Ladies,” Serena repeated.
“Right,” Abbie said.
An awkward silence fell over the car. Serena broke it.
“Alex told me, about the witness,” she said.
“Alex tells you everything, it seems.”
“We always have.” Abbie considered what everything included here.
Serena hadn’t left her mind this week. She was thinking about her significantly more than she would an ordinary hook-up. Serena was attractive, interesting, and great in bed. That thought was at the front of her mind, it hung in the air between them. Only a foot separated them, and it made her think about touching her. She knew it was a bad idea. She didn’t find herself caring.
Serena touched her first. She reached over and tucked a strand of hair out of her face and let her hand trace down to her shoulder.
“So,” she said. “Was it a good week?”
Abbie cleared her throat.
“I’ve had worse,” she said.
“I’m just glad it’s Friday. I hope my weekend is relaxing.”
“I have a feeling it will be,” Abbie replied, her voice low.
They reached Abbie’s place first. Serena gave her a pointed look that asked a question without words.
Abbie got out of the cab and opened Serena’s door. She took her hand and helped her out like a gentleman.
“Yeah,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great weekend.”

As Nancy Pelosi winds down her nearly two-decade tenure as the leader of House Democrats, including four terms as Speaker of the House, it is important to examine her time in leadership and learn from it.
In many respects, Speaker Pelosi has been one of the most powerful leaders ever to hold the gavel. In the political arena, her foes have used her as a bogeyman of liberal politics, pushing her image in campaign commercials, radio ads, and direct mail. While Republicans have vilified her because of her political views and the policies she has pushed to passage, they missed an opportunity to learn from a role model. Any politician, regardless of party or ideology, should look to Nancy Pelosi as a leader to emulate. You don’t need to be a San Francisco liberal to emulate her success in keeping House colleagues in line, raising huge sums of money for reelection, supporting candidates who will be team players, holding at bay resistance from within the ranks, and operating strategically with Senate leaders and presidents from the same or different parties.
She has kept in line a sometimes-fractured House Democratic Caucus. Over time, the diversity of that caucus has ranged from Blue Dog moderate Democrats like Ron Kind (Wisc.), former representative and now Republican Gene Taylor (Miss.), and Heath Shuler (N.C.), to the original members of the proudly progressive squad of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.). From the leadership elections held in advance of the 108th Congress (2003-2005), to what is now her final term as Speaker in the 117th Congress (2021-2023), she has never lost a leadership fight and rarely lost a legislative battle.
When Nancy Pelosi needed to find votes, they were found. When disagreements were waged within her caucus, they were settled. When she had room to let more moderate or more progressive members vote no on legislation they opposed, they voted no.
Her tenure by the numbers shows remarkable strength and power. At nearly 13,000 days in office, she is the second longest serving woman in the history of the U.S. House. She served as Democratic leader for 10 consecutive congresses (108th-117th), a tenure that will fall about a year short of Sam Rayburn’s record of just over 21 years. When the 118th Congress is sworn in in January, she will be the fifth longest serving Speaker of the House of Representatives in history. And, over the past 20 years, she raised over $1 billion dollars for Democrats’ electoral efforts.
She has overseen the passage of landmark legislation as Speaker, from the Affordable Care Act to legislation that saved the American economy—twice—at the start of the Great Recession and the recession associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. And in the darkest days of House history—the assassination attempts of Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) and Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the violent insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021—she stood resolutely with Democratic and Republican colleagues condemning such violence, not as a leader of the Democratic Party, but as a Congressional leader.
Whether you agree with her politics or not, it is undeniable that she has been a remarkably effective House leader. That success has come as both House Minority Leader and as Speaker of the House. As Speaker, she has worked with a majority as large as 81 seats in November and December 2009 (258-177) and one as small as 6 seats from April to May 2021 (218-212). Some former rivals have admired her strength. Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich has said, “You could argue she’s been the strongest speaker in history. She has shown more capacity to organize and muscle, with really narrow margins, which I would’ve thought impossible.”
Her effectiveness, staying power, and liberal politics has made her a political target on the right. On January 6, as violent insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol, several were heard chanting “Where’s Nancy?” and video captured others making threats on her life. And recently a man broke into her San Francisco home allegedly planning to attack the Speaker, and violently assaulted her husband.
Whether Kevin McCarthy or someone else is the next Speaker of the House, the best path to success would be to become a conservative version of Nancy Pelosi. Some Republican leaders like Steve Scalise have managed civil relationships and/or strong working relationships with Democratic leaders like Steny Hoyer and even Speaker Pelosi. The same is true for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who by all accounts has a genuine respect for what Speaker Pelosi has accomplished. However, most other Republicans have forged a path of disdain and indignation for Pelosi rather than disagreement while learning by example. Failure to see her as a model for success will be the downfall of future Republican and Democratic leaders.
Several years ago, I moderated an event at which former Speaker Dennis Hastert spoke (prior to his legal troubles and downfall). He was asked what working with a president of the other party was like and he said he was always impressed with how President Clinton could compartmentalize politics, calling to negotiate budget matters on the same day the Senate was holding his impeachment trial. He said that Clinton knew that if he sulked about politics, it would be a barrier to his own success on policy. Unfortunately, gone are the days where many elected officials can disagree with their opponents on policy and politics, but respect and even admire them on process and procedure.
The U.S. House may never see another leader as capable and agile as Nancy Pelosi, but every Speaker from here forward should—above anything else—strive to replicate her leadership. Those who don’t will certainly be a footnote in a history in which Speaker Pelosi will forever be the lede.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
September 30, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
This afternoon, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government for 45 days—until just before Thanksgiving—by a vote of 335 to 91.
The maneuver was a huge blow to the MAGA caucus that was demanding dramatic cuts to the government, the embrace of their border policies, and elimination of Ukraine aid in exchange for keeping the government open. The measure the House passed had almost none of that. It was a clean continuing resolution to fund the government at 2023 levels for another 45 days…with two important exceptions: it added disaster funding, and it stripped out additional funding for Ukraine’s war against Russia.
House speaker Kevin McCarthy’s move was enough of a surprise that Democrats had to scramble even to read it, but it essentially means that McCarthy had to turn away from the MAGA Republicans to whom he has been catering and turn to the Democrats for the votes needed to fund the government.
All but one of the Democrats voted in favor; the lone “no” vote came from Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL), the co-chair of the Ukraine Caucus, whose district has a high percentage of Ukrainian Americans. The unity of the Democrats is notable and a sign of their strength going forward.
In contrast, the Republicans remain divided, but after months of catering to the extremists, today the rest of the conference asserted itself. One hundred and twenty-six Republicans voted in favor of the measure; 90 voted no. That 90 included all the usual suspects on the far right. The vote to pass the measure was a clear rebuke to the MAGA Republicans who had forced their colleagues in swing districts to vote for dramatic and unpopular cuts in services and then refused to fund the government anyway.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said, “The American people have won. The extreme MAGA Republicans have lost. It was a victory for the American people and a complete and total surrender by right-wing extremists who throughout the year have tried to hijack the congress.”
McCarthy, explaining his sudden about-face to work with the Democrats, also blamed the extremists. It was very clear he had done all he could to work with them, he said, but “if you have members in your conference that won’t let you vote for appropriation bills, doesn’t [sic] want an omnibus, and won’t vote for a stopgap measure so the only answer is to shut down and not pay our troops, I don't want to be a part of that team. I want to be part of a conservative group that wants to get things done.”
More colloquially, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wrote: “Here’s what went down: we just won a clean 45 day gov extension, stripped GOP’s earlier 30% cuts to Social Security admin etc, staved off last minute anti-immigrant hijinks, and averted shutdown (for now). People will get paychecks and MTG threw a tantrum on the way out. Win-win[.]”
Still at stake is funding for Ukraine, but members promise to make sure that happens. “We will get the Ukraine funding next,” Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) wrote. “This is a 45-day bill to make sure government is open and troops/cops/air-traffic controllers etc get paid. With the same leverage we used to bear back MAGA, we will keep Ukraine in the fight.”
The issue of funding for Ukraine is not a small one. Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) noted that it was on September 30, 1938, that British prime minister Neville Chamberlain announced he would not stand in the way of Adolf Hitler’s annexation of the Sudentenland, a key move in Hitler’s rise. “Members of the House and Senate who are voting to deny Ukraine assistance on the 85th anniversary of Neville Chamberlain’s 1938 “peace in our time” speech should read some history,” she wrote. “Appeasement didn’t work then. It won’t work now.”
The votes should be there for Ukraine aid. Just two days ago, members of the House voted 311 to 117 for Ukraine funding, and the Senate, too, strongly favors Ukraine aid. But there is no doubt the removal of this funding signals that Trump and the MAGA Republicans favor a foreign policy that helps Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The biggest loser in today’s vote was former president Trump, who had urged his loyalists to shut down the government until they got all their demands. He is an agent of chaos and recognized that hurting the nation—including our credit around the world—would make voters more likely to turn against the sitting president.
Getting himself or someone like him back into the White House is becoming his only hope for turning back his legal troubles, especially now that a judge has decided that he, his older sons, a number of associates, and the Trump Organization engaged in fraud that requires the dissolution of many of his businesses. That is a psychic blow as well as a financial one, and he cannot afford either.
The biggest winner is the American people, not only because Congress has agreed to do as the vast majority of us wish and fund the government. It’s far too early to say Republican leadership might really be breaking away from the MAGA crowd, but for today, at least, we can see what’s possible. It is clear at the very least that McCarthy cannot hold the speakership without Democratic votes.
Tonight the Senate also passed the continuing resolution, by an overwhelming vote of 88 to 9. The nine were all Republicans.
President Biden is expected to sign the measure. Tonight he released a statement saying that the agreement would prevent “an unnecessary crisis that would have inflicted needless pain on millions of hardworking Americans. This bill ensures that active-duty troops will continue to get paid, travelers will be spared airport delays, millions of women and children will continue to have access to vital nutrition assistance, and so much more.” “But I want to be clear,” he continued: “[W]e should never have been in this position in the first place. Just a few months ago, Speaker McCarthy and I reached a budget agreement to avoid precisely this type of manufactured crisis. For weeks, extreme House Republicans tried to walk away from that deal by demanding drastic cuts that would have been devastating for millions of Americans. They failed.” Biden noted that despite the bill’s lack of aid for Ukraine, McCarthy and the overwhelming majority of Congress have been strong supporters of Ukraine. He said, “We cannot under any circumstances allow American support for Ukraine to be interrupted. I fully expect the Speaker will keep his commitment to the people of Ukraine and secure passage of the support needed to help Ukraine at this critical moment.”

Common Dreams
April 20, 2023
Backed by climate, health, and labor groups, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey on Thursday reintroduced the Green New Deal Resolution, which the progressive leaders have been fighting for since they first unveiled it in February 2019.
"In the four years since we first introduced the Green New Deal, the tides of our movement have risen and lifted climate action to the top of the national agenda," Markey (D-Mass.) said of the resolution, which envisions a 10-year mobilization that employs millions in well-paying union jobs to help the country respond to the climate emergency.
"Thanks to the persistence of the Green New Deal movement, we succeeded in securing historic progress through the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act," he noted, "and now we have an obligation to honor the origins of that success—which sprung from the young people and workers who never once stopped organizing for their future—by putting those dollars to work to create dignified jobs, rectify generations of systemic injustice, and reverse climate damage."
Along with reintroducing the resolution—a largely symbolic move given the current makeup of Congress—the pair released a guide for cities, states, tribes, nonprofits, and individuals about how those two laws "help bring the Green New Deal to life."
"Finally, it is understood that the climate crisis demands a full transformation of our economy and society that the government must lead."
While some progressives criticized the Inflation Reduction Act for pouring "gasoline on the flames" of the climate crisis by extending the fossil fuel era, it was still widely heralded for investing a historic $369 billion in "energy security and climate change."
Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that "when we first introduced the Green New Deal, we were told that our vision for the future was too aspirational. Four years later, we see core tenets of the Green New Deal reflected in the Inflation Reduction Act—the largest ever federal investment in fighting climate change, with a focus on creating good, green jobs."
"But there is still much, much more to do to make environmental justice the center of U.S. climate policy," the congresswoman acknowledged. "Today's reintroduction marks the beginning of that process—of strengthening and broadening our coalition, and of laying the policy groundwork for the next fight."
The resolution is co-sponsored by several lawmakers in both chambers of Congress and endorsed by dozens of groups, including the Sunrise Movement, whose executive director, Varshini Prakash, said that Thursday "marks our recommitment to the bold vision of the Green New Deal—the only plan to stop the climate crisis at the speed and scale that science and justice demand."
"Since the Green New Deal was first introduced, we have made climate a rallying cry for our generation and a political priority for our politicians," Prakash continued. "And in just a few years, through our organizing, we have elected new leaders, helped pass the biggest climate bill in U.S. history, and built a new consensus in the Democratic Party—finally, it is understood that the climate crisis demands a full transformation of our economy and society that the government must lead." “Across this country, millions of young people still dream of a Green New Deal," she added. "So as fossil fuel billionaires and right-wing extremists take on the battle for control of our classrooms and communities, we are fighting back. Together, we will take over, classroom by classroom, school by school, city by city until we win the Green New Deal in every corner of this country."
Markey declared that "we have demonstrated that our movement is a potent political force, and in the run-up to the 2024 elections, we will direct this power to demanding solutions to the intersectional crises Congress has yet to address: in healthcare, childcare, schools, housing, transit, labor, and economic and racial justice."
Also on Thursday and as part of that pledge, Markey partnered with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to introduce the Green New Deal for Health, a bill "to prepare and empower the healthcare sector to protect the health and well-being of our workers, our communities, and our planet in the face of the climate crisis, and for other purposes."
The senator stressed that "the American healthcare system is broken—from the exorbitant medical bills and outlandish insurance premiums to maxed out emergency rooms and shuttering hospitals. With climate disasters on the rise, the health and safety of frontline environmental justice communities is more precarious than ever."
"We urgently need to invest in a more sustainable system, one that is resilient to the impacts of climate change, supports its workers, and doesn't rely on fossil fuels. We can't have a healthcare system that makes us sicker while healthcare providers work to make us well," added Markey—who, like Khanna, supports Medicare for All.
The bill would invest $130 billion in community health centers, authorize $100 billion in federal grants for medical facilities to improve climate resilience and disaster mitigation efforts, require hospitals that receive Medicare payments to notify the U.S. Health and Human Services secretary at least 180 days before a full closure, and create a task force to ensure a greener medical supply chain.
"Across the world, hundreds of millions of people are already feeling the effects of climate change and the health consequences that often follow. From increased cases of asthma due to air pollution to disruptions at care facilities after extreme weather events, it's clear we need to take steps now to protect public health," said Khanna.
The healthcare legislation is also backed by progressives from both chambers and various advocacy groups and unions.
"Stopping the climate crisis will require us to transform every aspect of our society, our economy, and especially our healthcare system, to work for people and the planet," said Sunrise's Prakash. "Sen. Markey's Green New Deal for Health finally addresses the staggering, often-overlooked costs to our health from fossil fuel-generated air pollution and climate change, and begins to build a system where people and workers are taken care of. If our generation is going to have a shot at a livable future, we must pass it as we strive towards our vision of a Green New Deal."

QOTS Rewatch - Season 3 Retrospective
As always, before moving onto the next season (😭) I want to take a look back at this last one. Season 3 is great. I know I've said season 2 is my favorite (it is, in my opinion, the strongest season overall, tightest in terms of character work and story building), but season 3 is a pivotal season character-wise for Teresa and James both. It's the season of James's redemptive arc and a season that sets Teresa ever further on the path towards darkness. As with the previous seasons, here's what I'll cover:
My Top 3 Episodes
My Top 5 Scenes
Season 3 Episodes Ranked
Teresa’s Journey
Jeresa, DUH
Tumblr media
Top 3 Season 3 Episodes
This is too easy:
3: 3x08, El Carro
All three of my top season episodes have in common that they have amazing conversations between Teresa and James, conversations that actually move the needle significantly and help us understand both characters, especially Teresa. This one's conversations in the rabbit car ('so you regret what we did?' 'of course not!') and later in the bathroom at their house ('this is who I am' 'I know, but you don't have to hide from me') left me vibrating when I watched this the first time and STILL make me freak out when I watch them with how incredible it is that this drug cartel show gave us mature and thoughtful and provocative conversations between the characters of the main ship. Mind-blowing. Like they aren't going to play games with each other?!?!?! So fucking refreshing. Anyway, bonus points for the car chase, for Teresa panicking about James in danger, for her conversation with Pote about what was going on with James (in which she barely said anything at all), and for Taza, George, and Lil T all co-starring.

2: 3x05, El Juicio
'Not your favorite???' I hear you cry. No, listen, this episode is only not my favorite because, as a whole, the Camila/Cortez/Loya side story is really boring and takes up way too much screen time. I really resent what this season did to Camila's character, silo-ing her with these two uninteresting male characters all season who barely had anything to do with Teresa's story either. But other than the Camila content, this episode is LITERAL FIRE. The soft Jeresa flirting at the beginning, the iconic showdown with Devon, and James's confession followed by the most beautiful first love scene for a TV ship *EVER* make this episode sooo hard to beat. So hard to beat that only one episode this season beats it, and that is...
Tumblr media
1: 3x02, El Colgado
I'm going to confess that this is one of my most rewatched episodes of the series. I find the tension between them here--and its sweet and tentative resolution--soooo compellingly real and complex. That car chase scene at the beginning is funny and hot and bittersweet all at once, with a (terrified and mistrusting) small but mighty Teresa and a (bewildered and utterly transparent) competent as always James trying to confront the trust issues that separated them in the first place while also trying to just, you know, stay alive with enemies coming at them from all angles. Then the soft conversation in the cop car and the final balcony scene while Pote is recuperating is just pure magic. It's incredible. And the Camila story (trying to kill Teresa in Malta) obviously ties in directly to Teresa's so it doesn't feel irrelevant or annoying. As I said: my most-watched episode of the season. Watching Teresa force James to tie himself up and put himself in the trunk while he shakes his head at her is BETTER THAN SEX. I said what I said.

Top 5 Season 3 Scenes
I had a tough time narrowing down this season's best scenes. But after a few elimination rounds, I finally have to concede it's these five. Again, they are all Jeresa scenes. I genuinely think their relationship became the backbone of the show this season, with Camila and Teresa hardly sharing any screentime. But also, no shame, I am just a total glutton for Jeresa content. I also realized that in seasons 1 and 2, I had top scenes from episodes other than the top episodes. Not so this season. Hmmm what does that mean? ANYWAY, here they are:
#5:
The scene: Episode 3x08, the 'so you regret what we did?' 'of course not!' conversation.
What I love about it: The cathartic vulnerability in James's uneasy question, the shocking candidness of Teresa's response, and the fact that in a simple call and response, the agony of the two previous episodes of James wondering where he stands with her instantly resolves. This is flawless writing, with both of them so beautifully in-character.
#4:
The scene: Episode 3x02, the end-of-episode balcony scene.
What I love about it: the softness! James's transparency! Teresa SMILING! The flirtinggggggg. Ugh I can't stand the cuteness. And also, at the same time, I love how clear she is that he'll be working for her, not with her; she is unapologetic about her power and it's insanely attractive to me. And James isn't threatened by it! In fact, he fully accepts it and respects her. It's incredible to witness this dynamic on TV.
Tumblr media
#3:
The scene: Episode 3x05, the 'Unholy War' scene, i.e., the showdown with Devon and company.
What I love about it: If I were more objective, I might rank this first, because the combination of the tension, the music, the cinematography, the acting, James's shock at Teresa risking her life for him, and then the incredible resolution with Lil T's phone call and Teresa coolly sending Devon off makes this one of the most iconic scenes in the entire show. But I'm not objective, and my top two slots are reserved for my fave strictly Jeresa scenes of the season.
Tumblr media
#2:
The scene: Episode 3x02, from the moment Teresa turns her gun on James in his getaway car to the moment she makes him get in the trunk.
What I love about it: I've basically already said this in my discussion of why this episode is in my season top 3. The impeccable acting shows exactly how rattled Teresa is and reveals how personal his reappearance is, and the clash between her simmer and James being utterly cool and calm under pressure is pure delight.
Tumblr media
#1:
The scene: Does it really need to be said? Episode 3x05, THE KISS.
What I love about it: Oh my god. What don't I love?

I don't usually explain my rankings but... the whole is-James-a-mole thing and the Kelly Anne getting 'killed' thing really kinda makes it hard for me to assess the artistic merits of those episodes without my emotional bias. Hence those two being at the bottom. Same goes for the Guero death episodes, though those weren't quite as painful and had good resolution anyway. I can't really explain why 3x03 is so low for me but it's never been a favorite. I love the James/Pote dynamic there, and love King George, but ehhh. It always felt a little heavy-handed to me somehow.
Teresa's Journey
It's hard to talk about Teresa's journey this season without getting ahead of myself because this season really was the crossroads. It's not that she's unrecognizable by the end of it--or that seasons 4 and 5 Teresa have nothing left of "old Teresa"--but something in her hardens by the end of this season so that if you look back at her in seasons 1 and 2 you can really see it. In season 1, Teresa was doing everything she could to get out of the business and escape with Brenda to a new life. In season 2, after losing Brenda, she'd decided escape was futile and by the end, decided she was going to hang out her own shingle because doing that, and fighting for her own power, was the only way she would be able to survive. But she'd also convinced herself that she could do this business a different way, "without all the killing." She could be the person she was in her core and run a drug cartel.
Tumblr media
And season 3 started out seeming like that could actually work. She had a vision for her business that was essentially to run it as a legitimate business. This meant not just being financially savvy and entrepreneurial, but also meant ... not just offing people for saying the wrong thing. The problem though is that as her business grew, she acquired enemies: the "traditional" lords of the criminal underworld who weren't interested in learning her rules. They were perfectly content to try to force her to play by theirs. And little by little she was indeed forced to do just that. In the first few episodes of the season she burns an entire fledgling business to the ground--and a significant new business relationship--because she can't stomach the sex trade aspect of the cartel world. But by just a few episodes later, she's using a wedding party as a personal shield because she refuses to clear out of Phoenix where her enemies are trying to get rid of her. And by the end, in her most shocking queenpin-like move yet, she's ordering the execution of someone she loved but who hurt her.
At the beginning of the season, in other words, she's willing to risk her life in order to do the morally right thing. In the middle, she's willing to accept some moral compromises in order to survive. But by the end, she's willing to enforce those moral compromises as a matter of principle. Ouch. And it all happens because of trauma. Every step of her hardening seems to come about as a direct reaction to some new terrible thing. Devon coming for her. Camila coming for her. Guero dying. The explosion and her near death in Bolivia. Someone in her inner circle betraying her. Cortez coming for her. And then... James leaving. Again: poor woman.
The show didn't linger enough, in my opinion, on her decision to order Kelly Anne to be killed. That ought to have been a huge decision she would've agonized over, and she ought to have suffered over it on-screen more than she did, precisely because it would have made this arc clearer. The fact that we don't see her think about it at all after it happens makes it seem as if she moved on from it rather quickly. Maybe that's the point--the fact she can move on from it quickly means she's already hardened--but still I think it could've been made more obvious to the viewers that it was a shocking choice, perhaps by having her talk to James about it.
...which brings me to Jeresa.
Jeresa
James and Teresa's relationship was this season really the only way we had any access to Teresa's inner emotional world. She has moments with Pote, but It's in her conversations with James that we hear her actually talk about herself in a real way--both her visions for the business and her thoughts and feelings about her emotional landscape. (It's exactly this hole that James leaves in season 4). I really feel like I've kind of talked to death about their dynamics this season in my individual episode metas already so I'm struggling to summarize coherently. But obviously a lot in this season is magic for them. They are finally separated from Camila and so their relationship actually has space to blossom. They get to know each other better, live together, learn each other's rhythms and see each other's soft sides. James learns to navigate his personal feelings in the context of her being his boss; Teresa learns to trust him and lean on him in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
But through both of these things is a more somber undercurrent because while James obviously loves and respects her deeply, he also still missteps in ways that send her trust issues flaring (pushing back too much or too aggressively; smothering her a bit in his efforts to "protect" her; and never really being able to apologize for the ways he might've misstepped--like locking her in the closet, say, or giving her a tracking device in Tony's gameboy!). And while Teresa obviously goes a long way towards trusting him and letting him in emotionally (which, it's no accident that the breakthrough moment for them comes when James is showing her real vulnerability, something that is so palpable that it's impossible not to trust it and her empathy and love come pouring out then), she can't quiet the voices of doubt fully, leading to the heartbreak towards the end of the season. And this heartbreak, for her, will be another clear step towards becoming Queenpin.
There are so many other elements to their relationship that are interesting this season, like the fact Teresa is finally articulating the lessons James was trying to teach her back in season 1 at the same time as it was his own clinging to her lessons from season 1 that resulted in his own transformation before season 3. "You told me there was no good or bad in this business, right?" she says to try to comfort him. But he doesn't believe that anymore, just when she has started to need to believe it. Or, the fact of his departure, after he'd spent all season trying to get her to believe that he wouldn't leave her, being yet another reason for her to believe everyone will die or abandon her, setting her out further on the path towards becoming Queenpin, even while the very essence of his departure is about staying. But this is so long and I am so tired and I have written about all of those things in earlier episode metas and in reblog recap tags. So I'm going to stop.
Coming up next...
Is season 4. I am not going to do individual episode metas for season 4, and there are far fewer gifsets for each episode than there were in season 3 (there are a bunch for the first two episodes but it starts to taper off). So my hope is to get through this season preeeetty quickly.  will do a recap of a few episodes at a time just to talk about important themes. Aaaaand I m going to continue to reblog Jeresa and James gifsets throughout the s4 rewatch, just because this is my blog and I can do what I want, and I don't want a James-less couple weeks here lol. Anyway, just letting y'all know who've been following along that we're going to scoot right along so we won't suffer too badly 😂 Season 4 has some merits and positives, so definitely want to celebrate those, but my Jeresa-possessed soul will also need some moral support to get through it.

Rules of Evidence (Civil Proceedings) in Brazil: Overview
Tumblr media
The partners in Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Flavia Altério, Tiago Cortez and Taísa Oliveira, and the lawyers in the area, Aline Adestro, Gabriella Feres and Nathalia Abé, participated in the “Rules of Evidence (Civil Proceedings) in Brazil: Overview”, published by Practical Law – Thomson Reuters.
This document provides an overview of the rules governing disclosure and the admissibility of evidence in civil proceedings. In particular, it looks at the rules on the disclosure obligations of the parties, admissibility of evidence, witness evidence, the burden and standard of proof, as well as issues that arise in gathering cross-border evidence. Evidence is fundamental to the outcome of any civil litigation case. Usually, the facts in issue in a case must be proved by evidence, and the court will decide the case on the evidence adduced by the parties.

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), who for years has promoted and appeared with white nationalists, voted Thursday to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, citing... what he called “her sustained racism and anti-semitism.”
On that front, Gosar’s own record is unparalleled: In February 2021, he spoke at a political conference hosted by the white nationalist Nick Fuentes ― known today as the political adviser of the antisemitic rapper Ye. At the event, Gosar praised the crowd, telling them that “a nation without a people is not a nation.”
Fuentes, following Gosar, told his audience: “White people are done being bullied!”
The following day, Fuentes posted a picture to his Twitter account of him and Gosar getting coffee together. A few days later, Gosar tweeted a meme that included the motto of Fuentes’ white nationalist group.
Even after a public outcry, Gosar appeared at the same conference a year later, this time in a pre-recorded video. (He subsequently said the appearance was due to a miscommunication.) At that conference, Fuentes remarked: “Now, [the media is] going and saying, ‘Vladimir Putin is Adolf Hitler,’ as if that isn’t a good thing.”
Following the event, Gosar claimed he was done “dealing with Nick.” But he wasn’t: In September, he tweeted a link to a documentary about Fuentes, with a comment about “the persecution against Christians and Conservatives by the Biden Regime.” He eventually deleted the tweet.
In an email to constituents Thursday explaining his vote to boot Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee, Gosar falsely said the congresswoman “has expressed a deep hatred for Jewish people and Israel.”
“Representative Omar has pursued a reckless and fundamentally anti-American agenda while in the United States House of Representatives,” Gosar wrote. “She regularly engages with racists, supports and condones racism, and champions anti-American sentiments.”
Gosar’s email, and the Republican resolution he voted on to expel Omar from the committee, cited a handful of tweets and comments from the congresswoman, such as a tweet in which she said U.S. politicians’ support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins baby.” (Omar later apologized for the remark.) Gosar also cited a public appearance in which Omar said, “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” comparing pro-Israel lobbying efforts to those of the National Rifle Association and the fossil fuel industry.
Gosar’s ties to white nationalists go back years. In 2019, he was following explicit white nationalists on his personal Twitter page ― accounts with names like @TradNatWife88 (“88” is a common white nationalist code for “Heil Hitler”). One account that Gosar followed published tweets like “We need a leader who can rile the masses of Whites with their eye’s [sic] closed,” and “Wherever there’s n[******] they’ll be n[******].”
More recently, Gosar has tweeted (and then deleted) support for former President Donald Trump’s call for the “termination” of parts of the Constitution. He has also tweeted a video of an animated version of himself killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
Despite that behavior, Republicans, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), have restored Gosar to committee assignments after Democrats in the previous House majority voted to kick him off various committees.
Gosar’s office didn’t respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
