Chapter 31 of Gideon the Ninth

Just to state for the record, this chapter killed me dead, I read it last night and am no longer in that state of mind, but like, just for the record

So finally, I think we have all the answers to the questions about Gideon and Harrow's backstory, I think the only one left is "why were no more children born" but based on comments from people here that seems to be an open question that isn't answered definitively in the book. I think the story with Dulcinea is still unresolved, and we still don't know what happened to Protesilaus's body, and I think there is now a new unanswered question as of the last chapter about what happened to Dulcinea's facility key. The Fourth teens did say they saw Protesilaus go into the facility, possibly this is where Harrow found him, so probably whoever took the body also took the key, and that person seems to have chosen to take the key and hide the existence of the body rather than reporting it as another murder. The only people who I think would have any interest in a facility key are Judith Deuteros, who had hers taken by Palamedes, and Corona, but I'm not sure how much interest Corona actually has in the facility, to be honest. Also, if Protesilaus was disassembled in the facility, he had to have been found by someone who already had a facility key, which leaves just Ianthe, Palamedes and Mayonnaise Uncle as possibilities, and I think if Palamedes had found the body he would have said so to someone last chapter. Ianthe was trying to get a facility key for Corona earlier, I recall, so I think she's most likely. There's also the question of how Protesilaus originally died - Harrow says he was stabbed, but his head came off when she undid the spell, and we know there are two people in the incinerator, so I think it's also possible that he was beheaded and his head attached to the body of someone who was stabbed

So, at the start of this chapter, Gideon is still in a general state of "will do anything if Harrow asks nicely", at least after finding out that Harrow didn't murder Protesilaus, and even though what Palamedes said to her at the end of the last chapter didn't convince me, I think it may have convinced Gideon that Harrow isn't actually evil

This was clever, actually. How do you get a child to keep a terrible secret? You instill in them a belief/superstition/custom that they are only allowed to talk about it under certain specific circumstances that can't exist on your planet except in a secret place where no one else is allowed to go

So my first guess that Harrow figured out Protesilaus on the first day actually was correct, and she was just still verifying it at Magnus's anniversary party. Lucky that she got assigned to sit next to him, really. Also the timing I posted in my last post was approximately accurate, but at some point in that same time period, she must have given the white key to Dulcinea. I'm guessing she did that before disassembling Protesilaus, because I think the reason she was asleep and unwakable the next time Gideon saw her was because she was worn out from doing that, maybe? But this re-opens the question of, if she thought Protesilaus was dead on arrival, what role did she think Palamedes played in this? It's pretty apparent, at least from Gideon's POV, that he has never met Dulcinea before they arrived at Canaan House

Also, let's try to imagine what would have been different if Harrow had told Gideon about this at that point. I don't think this would have negatively disposed Gideon towards Dulcinea, I think she probably would have just filled in the same story that Dulcinea just told them for herself and felt worse for her that she didn't actually have a cavalier. So, I'm not sure things would have been that different, except that Gideon wouldn't have briefly assumed that Harrow killed him

Also, the Protesilaus reveal also shows the real reason why Dulcinea couldn't do the soul siphoning challenge. But I would actually expect her to not be able to do any of the challenges without an actually living cavalier, so that raises a new question: how did she get the grey key? And it leaves the old question: why is she trying to get keys in the first place? I think the only thing that makes sense is that she's of the same opinion as Mayonnaise Uncle and doesn't want any of the candidates to become a Lyctor, which is why she willingly gave her keys to him, if she knew he had the same goal. But in that case, why did she offer to make a deal with Palamedes, who has the most keys out of everyone, and would have had five out of eight if he'd agreed? I still think she is already immortal/a Lyctor, I'm not letting go of this conspiracy theory

And this answers the question I raised last chapter. Now I'm really curious about what happened, from Harrow's POV, when she was staying with Palamedes and Camilla and Dulcinea. Like surely there's a fanfic out there where Harrow keeps expecting them all to attack her, meanwhile everyone is behaving completely normally, that actually sounds like it could be pretty funny

This is odd, because last chapter, Gideon tells Palamedes that Harrow didn't do the other murders, and he's the one who says that's "conjecture". Going to return to the paragraph just before this in a minute when we get into the heavy shit

So, Harrow doesn't actually think Dulcinea is evil, she just thought she was up to something weird by reanimating her cavalier. As the only person that Harrow thinks can't have possibly done all of the murders, I predict that she is going to turn out to have been responsible for them somehow. She did have Protesilaus doing something down in the facility just before the Fourth teens were murdered, and for some reason she didn't go with him. Originally I thought he couldn't be responsible for, say, setting up a necromancy trap to kill the Fourth teens, because he wasn't a necromancer, but since he's actually just Dulcinea's puppet, she might be capable of doing necromancy through him. And she also had him punch Mayonnaise Uncle when he was trying to use soul siphoning to get answers out of Magnus and Abigail's bodies - I think I mentioned that she might have inspired him to do that because she was the murderer way back then, but the fact that she literally directed him to do that rather than him just reacting to her scream makes that even more likely, I think. I think the only reason no one is remembering this and finding it suspicious is that I think literally everyone hates Mayonnaise Uncle at this point and finds his soul siphoning methods creepy and unethical. And I guess, by voluntarily giving him her keys, she also made him into the kind of person who steals valuables from bedridden people who are dying, in everyone else's eyes, so if he ever does bring this up, no one will take him seriously

It's interesting that even though I'm sure Harrow came to the pool specifically to tell Gideon about the deaths of the 200 children, she doesn't just tell her about that, and has to wait until Gideon specifically asks, and even then has to spend some time working herself up to answer

(For the record, at this point in the writeup, the Nook app crashed for the third time since I started writing this. Arghhh)

I think this is the part of the story that all the people leaving me comments about how they are excited to see me read the next part were waiting for, right?

I think I maybe should have expected that the 200 children were killed for this reason, because someone told me earlier that Mayonnaise Uncle's comment to Ianthe at Magnus's anniversary party was implying that if Ianthe had died in the womb, Corona would have been stronger. I think that actually does count as a spoiler, because I don't think I would have realized that except on a reread after having read this chapter, but in the event I didn't realize this because of that, so it's fine. I did legitimately learn from the book that the Cohort generates thanergy via warfare, and that the Seventh House likes it when their heirs have blood cancer, because that generates thanergy as well. But like, to put this particular thanergy-related war crime into perspective, based on that early conversation, Corona and Ianthe's parents were not willing to sacrifice one child to make their heir a better necromancer; Mayonnaise Uncle sounds like he would be willing to do that, but even he seems to find the idea of killing 200 children for any reason abominable. But Harrow's parents and great-aunts were willing to do that

And Harrow would too, if she thought she had to. She has this weird kind of doublethink going on where she simultaneously thinks that nothing she could do could possibly make killing 200 children worth it, and also that anything is worth it if she can live long enough to see the body in the Locked Tomb wake up, which I guess is the real reason she wants to be a Lyctor so badly. Actually, I sort of wonder, since the body in the Tomb had such an effect on her that it cut through all of Harrow's thoughts about how she didn't deserve to exist, if it actually cast some sort of glamour on her. Like, presumably it was locked behind all that magic for a reason, and apparently the Emperor didn't actually want the Ninth House to stand guard over the Tomb like they do, he didn't want guarding it to be trusted to humans

So, I think we can start to pick apart Harrow's weird relationship with Gideon now. Harrow has grown up her whole life believing that she deserves to die because of how she came into existence, and Gideon is like, this Harry-Potter-esque Boy (Girl) Who Lived, this pure symbol of Justice and Innocence standing up to her family's tyranny and surviving anyway, and I really think that this whole time she's just wanted to antagonize Gideon to the point where she kills her, completely rightly and justifiably, in her view, and does the thing that Harrow feels she wasn't strong enough to do, and that that's also what Harrow wanted Gideon to do in the scene:

When Gideon says early in this conversation that Harrow would have killed her when she confronted her about Protesilaus, she says:

She's still fantasizing about her dying and Gideon surviving. It reminds me of Swordspoint, where Alec has this like fucked up romantic ideal of being killed by Richard, who is essentially the hand of Justice and Honor in his world, to the point where when he's on his deathbed he hires a guy to pretend to be Richard and kill him, and like with Harrow, that all goes back to his guilt over what his social status caused to happen at the university. I've said in the past that Swordspoint is my favorite book, and the more similar to Swordspoint a book is, the more I'll like it, and just in terms of the deeply fucked up interpersonal relationships part of Swordspoint I think this book is like, ten or fifteen Swordspoints at this point, Alec really only had a tiny smidgen of privileged rich boy guilt compared to Harrow. So Harrow wants Gideon to kill her, because that's what would be good and right, but also she really really really wants to be there when the body in the Locked Tomb wakes up. And she thinks she deserves to die, so she suspects people she thinks are good and sensible of wanting to kill her - she thought Magnus and Abigail were going to poison her, she thought Palamedes and Dulcinea were going to try to kill her

Meanwhile, Gideon just thinks that Harrow hates her because she killed her parents, and that she did kill Harrow's parents, and that she deserves all of Harrow's abuse and everything the Ninth House has done to her, so she never fights back. And then Harrow tells her all this stuff, and she doesn't say, "well that sucks, but I can't forgive you for how you've treated me" which I think would be a reasonable thing to say at this point, she just says "I'm so sorry", because I think if you painted a smiley face on a rock Gideon would empathize with it and want it to be her friend

This is like, really going ham with the whole Space Jesus thing already and we haven't even gotten to the actual Space Jesus part yet. And you know - I am actually sold. I can buy this Jesus analog. I've literally hated every other time a character turns out to be Basically Jesus, but this I actually like

(Also, I suspect that at the end of the book Gideon is going to be given the opportunity to outlast Harrow as Harrow requested, and is going to decline that opportunity in favor of dying and saving Harrow, I do see where this is going now)

But like, Harrow does actually seem to want Gideon to like her. She doesn't think she deserves Gideon liking her and thinks she should kill her instead, but she does want Gideon to like her and seems to have been motivated by that a bit since coming to Canaan House:

So I think this would now make Gideon Harrow's actual cavalier, instead of someone pretending to be Harrow's cavalier, but I don't think we yet have the full context for what "one flesh, one end" actually means in full, and I would not be surprised if there was some very important implication to it that Gideon (and maybe Harrow) does not actually know that will become relevant later

The reveal that Crux blew up the shuttle is honestly a bit of a let-down after the rest of the chapter, I wouldn't actually be surprised if it later turns out to have exploded for some other, completely different reason, but there really seems to be no reason I can think of why anyone would want to kill Ortus and Glaurica, if Harrow had planned to bring them back to the Ninth after they left

At some point Harrow may think to wonder how Gideon knew that the shuttle exploded, and then there may be some drama involving Mayonnaise Uncle and/or Colum

Biography

Born to his father's second wife, Nicolas has five older half siblings that he rarely saw growing up, as his dad left his first wife after growing tired of being 'tied down'. Although too young to know it, this was a scandal to both sides of Nic's family, as his dad's side saw it as abandoning his family, and his mother's side, an influential family in real estate, saw it as her marrying below her class.

With so much of his extended family upset at them, Nic never knew his grandparents or aunts and uncles, but he was never lonely. His father originally worked as a maintenance manager for a camp ground used to host regular flea markets/trade days, and Nicolas spent a lot of his time running around open fields and learning how to assist people early in life.

As soon as Nic was old enough, he started working a desk to take entrance fees, to set up booth slots, and to arrange for whatever the grounds needed. He loved the energy of it and developing the connection with the people, and he was young enough that it didn't even feel like work. But it didn't last. Eventually the event shut down, the park sold to be developed into something else, and the family moved.

That happened a lot while Nic was growing up, his family moving from place to place, his dad always finding a series of similar jobs, and Nic often volunteering right next to him. The longest the family ever stayed in one place was when Nic's dad got a job on a college campus that offered free tuition to the family of anyone working there. Thanks to his dad's dedication, Nic managed to go to college for free.

It wasn't a surprise when his parents hit the road again just a few short months after his graduation, but it was the first time Nic didn't go with them. Instead he went in his own direction, staying a few years here and there, but never setting down firm roots as he traveled.

He never stayed in one place for more than five years until Antioch, and even that was an accident. While there, he met someone and fell in love, he even got married and had a kid, but things fell apart after that.

For the first time in his life, Nic was in a place he didn't think he could leave, and all because there were people there he couldn't take with them. So Nic stayed, looking around for a house and making an effort to put down roots for the first time in his life. It was a joke that he ended up as the new owner of Roseland, all based on a quip that his name was so close to Walsh's, but it seemed like a good way to show he was serious about staying, that for once in his life, he wasn't thinking only about the temporary.

Backstory

|(Ever since he was born, his parents gave up on him and just abandoned him in an orphanage when they first witnessed him was different from them and their child...So, they just abandoned him as an infant in an orphanage and left him there. But...The place wasn't too keen on actually caring about him instead. They abused him both physically, emotionally and sexually. He got bullied by kids and even once tortured by the adults, he was socially ostracised because of his albinism. Even raped by three boys in the orphanage and outside of it as well as the scar on his face was from a "punishment" by the adults who work there...As the pain at the place just grew and only lasted for 7 years until at the age of 9 on the 12 of January when Marcellus's parents determined to take him back to use him as their cook and cleaner at the house. If he ate something without their permission or without qualification he was "punished" as well and even his father sexually assaulted and harassed him. His mother just acted submissive to her husband's actions whilst his brother was worse than them as he just laughed at Marcellus when he got "punished" and even would often hurt him alongside his parents. He exploited or used Marcellus for his own benefit by manipulating him, it lasted for 4 years until at the age of 13 on November 18th before his 14th birthday. While he was "punished" for arriving home late, a villager witnessed this and reported it to the king of the kingdom where four guards arrived at the place and flung the door, they weren't ready to see this. They saw Marcellus with torn clothes as his skin was filled with blood, whip marks, wounds and bruises as he was tearing up whilst his right leg was cut off. They soon arrested his parents, as Marcellus was taken to the infirmary while Ignatius (Marcellus's brother) wasn't around when that happened so he kind of got away with it and he was 20 years old and he was off with his friends for a walk, but his parents weren't able to get away with their crimes and got arrested for it. So, now they were prohibited from seeing him but even then he was surprised his parents didn't lie at all cuz they lied all the time in the past when he was reporting them to the king of Corona but now once the villager exposed their true colours, they won't be able to lie anymore and instead, if they do. They would just fail again and again, at least the guard had some common sense and didn't believe them even if he was no longer with them. He would have nightmares and flashbacks of them abusing him, he just couldn't get over his past...He just can't, he hid his amputated leg ever since. He does, however, have a prosthetic leg after the incident where the doctor gave him one so he won't feel upset about losing a limp but got to do physical support to actually walk again. On the 14th of June still at the age of 14 years old with empty pockets. He met someone by the name of Eugene on the streets of Corona, Eugene took the then-young Marcellus somewhere in the forest into a tavern where his friends were there which was called "Snuggly Duckling" as Eugene brought Marcellus there to show him around the place, this was before he met Rapunzel and before anything was related to him like being old friends with Lance or being the prince of the Dark Kingdom. Since he was in his early 20s as such...He took the chance to actually work here as Eugene stated to Marcellus that "I desired to have the job as the tavern's wine-maker", he's never been this excited as he squealed as he enjoyed this job cuz it was his dream job. And he got my happy ending, here. Right? He escaped from the house and changed his last name to not remind him of his parents.)|

Father(S): Gilbert (Alive, formerly)

Information: His father was shown to be abusive and egocentric towards Marcus, at times. He would be angry at Marcellus if he dared to "talk back" at him, not obey them by not cooking or sweeping the house or rooms plus he isn't allowed to eat food with them and even for himself, he won't allow his wife who is Ramona to place a plate for Marcellus. He often sexually assaulted and harassed him!

Quirin: Marcellus was adopted by Quirin, as he knew about the abuse by the villager who once exposed the parents of Marcellus who abused him pretty badly so now Quirin would wanna make sure that young Marcellus won't have to see or hear from the parents.

Mother(S): Ramona (Alive, formerly)

Information: His mother is just as abusive as her husband albeit she acted submissive towards him and his actions. She often is shown to cook food for the family and places plates on the diner table to eat but does not place one for Marcellus since she views him as inhuman, but she often scolds him.

Brother(S): Ignatius (Alive)

Information: Ignatius just laughed at him when Marcellus got "punished" by their parents and even joined with his parents to hurt the albino boy, his brother exploits or uses him for his own advantage by manipulating him.

Varian: Marcellus and Varian are pseudo-siblings, these types of siblings are someone who is not a sibling, but has a relationship like a sibling, or that one considers to be like a sibling. Pseudosiblings are often unrelated by blood (consanguinity) and are typically very close friends. Which means, Marcellus would view the alchemist more like a close friend than a brother even though he is adopted by Quirin. While Varian views him as a close friend and a brother to him! He wasn't an alchemist before meeting Varian. He took an interest in alchemy because of Varian. He used to think alchemists were evil, because of the spreading rumours around Varian. But soon, Varian changed himself for the better and therefore he grew on Marcellus. Which resulted in their friendship shifting into a wholesome and friendlier one, Marcellus wished to be an alchemist much like Varian since he is an alchemist that Marcellus wanted to be. He got inspired by someone younger than him! Varian often times offer one of his old shirts to Marcellus instead. Probably would be a better fit, since Quirin’s shirt would be huge on him.

Sister(S): Hildred (Alive)

Information: Marcellus and Hildred were distant as they haven't shown to talk or see each other at times, but even then. She is at least the sympathetic person in the house as she gets to know more about him and knows he isn't like a creature like the parents and their brother expected but rather a human with albinism.

Pet(S): Trickster the albino raccoon

Information: He is Marcellus's pet and one of the trusted ones for him, he enjoys his presence as he would often play with it. It was a gift by Varian during Christmas, when everyone gave each other gifts.

Friends: Rapunzel, Eugene, Lance and Cassandra.

Information: Rapunzel is a dear friend of Marcellus, he originally knew Rapunzel while discovering dozens of lores and books about her. He soon met up with her and became close friends, her positive personality was a fresh of air for Marcellus. As she views him as a faithful friend of hers.

Eugene: He met up at the age of 14 on the streets of Corona, Marcellus wasn't going to trust Eugene until the thief took him somewhere in the woods into a tavern "Snuggly Duckling" as he brought Marcellus there to show him around the place, this was before he met Rapunzel and before anything was related to him like being old friends with Lance or being the prince of the Dark Kingdom. Since he was in his early 20s as such...He took the chance to actually work here as Eugene stated to Marcellus that "I desired to have the job as the tavern's wine-maker", he's never been this excited as he squealed as he enjoyed this job cuz it was his dream job. He soon earned his trust and grew on him when he acted friendly and worried about his well-being while also still being the same guy as before. He chit-chatted about his childhood as he wasn't sure who his parents were and him being an outcast. Which, Marcellus was sympathetic and gave him a hug.

Lance: Marcellus wasn't that trusting towards Lance, knowing that he is arrogant and easygoing, He is usually shown with a smile on his face and enjoys telling tales of his adventures, often stretching them. He is a kleptomaniac, tending to steal things such as when he first goes to Rapunzel's castle (though Eugene has him return the items). He tends to lie, cheat, steal, and scam people. He has a friendly attitude that makes him approachable, though his boastfulness makes him less than charming. He tends to not know when he isn't wanted and will often do things without regard to people's feelings. While he is used to lying and stealing due to his upbringing and even uses Eugene's trust and friendship to force him to be an accomplice for a theft, he genuinely values his friendship with him, enough to the point that he tells Rapunzel to put all the blame on him for their actions in stealing. He has shown to reform by the end of the episode though it is a slow process as he donates most of the goods he had stolen (but keeps one chalice) and eats all of the dinner Pascal prepared for him and Rapunzel. Lance joins the rescue mission led by Eugene and Marcellus to save Rapunzel's parents after they were lost in a raging blizzard. To Lance (and the Pub Thugs), risking his life for the king and queen was a way of thanking the monarchs for giving him a second chance despite his controversial past. Which why, Marcellus isn't so trusting towards Lance yet barely yells at him to not touch anything.

Cassandra: Marcellus idolises Cassandra. Cuz, she is a warrior woman. But he only idolizes her, not in a way where he in which has a crush on her. Unlike Varian, in which he has a crush on her. Marcellus shows a lack of romantic attraction or a lack of interest in forming romantic relationships, in case. He shows idolization but also a no-sexual way towards Cassandra. And he often does offer a gift to her like a sword and she might give him a manual. He often meets her in and out of the castle, blizzard, during Varian’s villain arc or on the road trip even during her villainy. Which that case, Marcellus knew Cassandra before as he grew to like her.

There is no freedom of expression in Germany

I could also comment on the so-called "Holocaust", but since I am a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany and it is punishable here to question it, I will not do so publicly.

When opinions are more important than real crimes

I had a house searched by police three years ago because of a YouTube comment in which I questioned the 6 million figure and criticized an Israeli's lying speech in the Bundestag. After being reported, the authorities investigated.

At that time, the German authorities had seriously taken the trouble to request the IP address from YouTube and then ask for my private data from the respective Internet provider; all of this, mind you, because of a fucking YouTube comment, where I was merely exercising my human right to have my own opinion by questioning the 6 million number, a mere historical matter; mind you again, one comment out of hundreds, so it was probably only read by a few dozen people anyway…

I received a report from the police, but I didn't comment on it because I found it ridiculous. The public prosecutor then simply decided that it would make sense to search my apartment: One morning three officers showed up at my door and took EVERYTHING that looked like a PC, including every USB stick and my cell phone. Even my internet modem was idiotically taken away by the police; and all this during Corona! Luckily the shops were already open so I could buy a new PC…

It was pure chicanery from the state; because it is unlikely that the police would have actually bothered to search the entire hardware for any data just to prove that I had written that YouTube comment; Their warehouses are full of hardware that they have not yet examined. And there are certainly more serious, real crimes…

In our society, “opinion crimes” are simply much worse than real crime. There are stabbing and raping refugees who were punished much more leniently than I was with my "Holocaust-denying YouTube comment! How can I still feel respect for this state and its dignitaries?! I feel more than just pissed off!

That's why it's difficult for me to perceive Russia as evil, contrary to everyday media propaganda, because I don't see how our alleged fake democracy can be any better. I learned that the German state sends more deletion requests to YouTube than, for example, China. And many events of the last few months, including this one, prove that the German state is doing everything it can to maintain the lie; by constructing a "right-wing threat" and feeding the guilt complex, when in reality we are ruled by far-left politicians.

Yes, the German state is firmly in the stranglehold of the Zionists, who want to turn us into self-destructive self-haters. So you just have to understand my negative feelings about Israel. I cannot and will not submit to their mental crap with any fiber of my German body, with any aspect of my German mind, and will ALWAYS represent my own opinion, even if it appears to many to be "morally reprehensible" at first glance. I'm not a monster, you can talk to me about anything, I listen and show understanding; but if I notice that something isn't right, then I don't give a damn about morals. That is simply my right!

I never really wanted to tell this story publicly, but the events in Israel are bringing those memories back to me and making me angry; especially when the media and politicians talk bullshit like "Germany finally has a job" as a statement that we should take care of Israel's welfare. Fuck, as far as I'm concerned this state can finally collapse and with it all their lies.

Whoever this Grumpy Girl is, wants total attention, and we are giving it to her. Grumpy Girl reminds me of Donald J Trump who makes things up as she lives in her own world of lies.  I don’t doubt that she is one of thousands of conservative Christians who reside in the United States.  This person has many followers, and her hate is pitting fans against each other, and we need to be careful.  Taekook is real she says… is like saying the Corona Virus is fake! Stay strong she says to others as Donald Trump has said to his followers as they swarmed to the United States Capital with insurrection in mind.  They were there to cause harm and she is here to cause harm to BTSArmy fans.  A lot of people like Grumpy Girl think we hate Taehyung in which we don’t.  I see that “We Love you Taehyung” is trending but it is there for different reasons.  Her words tell me she is a homophobic pretending to be a Taekooker and she is using who she thinks is the weakest link in BTS and that is Jimin to disrupt the fandom. If she can’t utilize Jimin, she goes after Bang Si Hyuk. Making a sick and mental inuendo of sexuality between Jimin and Bang Si Hyuk. That is criminal and it is called Sexual Harassment.  Grumpy Girl is not as dumb but dumber and her criteria is to cause harm.  Her manipulations is working on those who believe in the friendship of Taehyung and Jungkook.  Who is this hurting, none other but the Macknae line of BTS.  Her target is not the fans of BTS but BTS themselves.  She is using the fans to separate and divide the BTS 7 members or causing such an effect to decrease their popularity.  It’s called propaganda! What is “Propaganda” you ask? Propaganda is the dissemination of information—facts, arguments, rumors, half-truths, or lies—to influence public opinion. Deliberateness and a relatively heavy emphasis on manipulation distinguish propaganda from casual conversation or the free and easy exchange of ideas.  If you go against her propaganda, well guess what, we start getting her rantings of cursing, deep voice negative connotations, and arguments to invoke the crowd.  Same thing Donald J Trump uses to cause a negative action among MAGA.  We as BTS Army worldwide need to get Grumpy Girl off her pedestal by mass reporting her, copying and pasting her negative innuendos onto an email.  If anyone can put a draft email, it should have links to her social media platforms.  BigHit Music has let us know they are getting the emails, but they get thousands of emails which can cause back log of complaints.  Also, if we start blocking her, it eliminates her viewing numbers.  She is desperate and that is why she is now using a program like Zoom to interact her propaganda to those who will listen.  There are a lot of mentally disturbed people out there and that is why I advise not to engage with her negativity.  If you do not know the email address it is [email protected].

WIP WEDNESDAY

I wanna maintain a little bit of hype for you can't deny high noon, since it won't start being posted until December and since I'm working on it slowly (mostly writing the prologue and first chapter because those have been in my head for AGES and then some other scenes that have ALSO been in my head for ages), I thought for WIP Wednesdays, I'd share bits and bobs that aren't super spoilery, but i also wanna share parts of the prologue for, uh... reasons related to solidifying some things in the minds of whoever is here and planning on reading before the Lucien book fucks me.

So here's a bit from the prologue featuring, ahem, an "original" character and a familiar face!

CALPURNIUS AMABILIA PUBLIC RELATIONS (SPYMASTER)

Cal pressed the tips of the index fingers of his clasped hands to his lips as he listened to the report being given. Over the years, he had cultivated a mask of positive emotions, rarely giving in to the negative because it was unbecoming of a man who once managed the public relations between Cognouza and the other wards, back when they were still allowed to associate with them. Now he used it to keep himself from panicking. It wouldn’t do for the Spymaster to be seen falling apart in front of his best agent even if what she was telling him was troubling.

“So. Avalir is falling as we speak. And you’re sure?”

Bolo narrowed her eyes. “Am I sure? I am very sure. Fiends punch holes in the fabric of Material Plane.” She waved her hand, speaking curtly in her broken Common. Her first language was Draconic and Cal had always had a suspicion of why that might be, but as a man with celestial blood and the corona of a halo around his white-blonde hair to prove it, he didn’t think he had room to judge.

“That’s… not great,” Cal said, very slowly. Underneath his careful facade his heart was racing. He could feel his halo flickering, making the shadows of his office dance in time with its stutter.

“Not great is understatement,” Bolo drawled. “If whatever is happening came to Avalir, it will come here and be worse. You know what they are building in Genesis Ward.”

“And it still isn’t ready?” He finally lowered his hands.

“Not operational in the least. They intended to test it on Lathras, but-“ Again, she waved her hand, dismissively. For someone who had witnessed the beginnings of the fall of Avalir, her calm made his look cheap.

“Augusta’s machine is untested, but she claims it’s ready.” Cal exhaled between his teeth. “I’ll have to make the call.” He moved with grace towards his desk- white marble and full of elegant arcane holograms that activated with a touch of his fingers. He had written this announcement in advance when he and the other eight agreed that one day they would tear themselves away from Aeor proper and be done with this plane and had it all ready on a prompter to be read.

It needed a bit of editing now, but that was fine. He was good at improvising.

His finger hovered above the intercom button that would send his voice throughout Cognouza. “Will you be going with us?”

Bolo snorted and muttered something in Draconic he couldn’t understand. Off his raised eyebrow, she bared her teeth. “I do not know how to say this politely in Common so I will say it blunt- you people are insane and this will never work. I will take my chances as far from Aeor as possible.”

Cal chewed on the inside of his cheek. “I appreciate the vote of confidence, Bolo.” He sank into his chair, finger still poised over the button. “Still, I appreciate the work you’ve done for me. I wish you well.”

She turned on her sharp heels, still dressed smartly for a party. She hadn’t even bothered to change before making her report- that said something about how dire she found the situation, even if her curtness belied it. He’d never known Bolo to not be in uniform when she met with him. “I wish you some sanity, but you have already lost that. The Nine are full of dreams.”

“And that’s where the power is, Bolo,” he sing-songed.

“Bah!” She said over her shoulder. The sliding door opened to meet her as she stepped in front of it and snapped closed behind her.

Cal breathed deeply and pressed the button. “My beloved Cognouza…” He began praising his city for its merits and the loyalty of its people, who stood by its leaders when the rest of Aeor shut them out. They were all the misunderstood dreamers of Exandria and soon they would have their due.

He could hear his voice echoing beyond the door- muffled to him, but to the rest of his ward it would draw their attention, clear and lovely as bells. He may have gone from PR to spycraft, but at least the denizens of Cognouza still treated him as their voice.

His calming platitudes were only a smokescreen to ease them into the poorer news, but his voice remained firm and unwavering even as the tone shifted. “I have just received word that Avalir is falling. The time for us to leave this plane is now. Please report to your designated stations. This is not a drill.”

He paused. This was really happening. They were going home. For good this time, not just in their dreaming. Let the rest of the disillusioned masses of Aeor fall to pieces around them. Let the whole Material Plane fall apart. Let the gods have it if they wanted it so badly.

They were going where anything they wished could be made real. They would be the gods now.

Calpurnius Amabilia loved this city with all of his heart and he would help bring it to the glory that it deserved. A new age of enlightenment birthed from the aether of manifestation.

He leaned forward with a dreamy little smile and said: “Will the Somnovem please report to the Aether Crux for activation.”

Sunshine comes after the storm

I still remember the enormous challenge of COVID-19 posed to me. When I first saw the news about COVID-19 on TV, I didn't realize it was going to be a world-changing disaster. It was an ordinary evening, as usual, I was sitting on the sofa in the living room, watching the long-awaited TV show. Suddenly, red warning words rolled on the screen, many channels were forced to change the news broadcast, the voice of the anchor appeared solemn and serious:

"Hello, everyone. The COVID-19 has recently emerged in many regions, and the situation is very grim." "According to the latest data, the novel corona virus has spread rapidly across the country, and the number of infected people continues to increase." "In response to the outbreak, governments are taking a range of emergency measures, including locking down cities, imposing social distancing and stepping up medical care." "We urge the public to pay close attention to the situation, follow the epidemic prevention measures issued by the government, and protect the health of themselves and their families."

The news played a series of heart-wrenching pictures: hospital patients groaning in pain, medical workers wear heavy protective suits and fighting on the front line, government officials at a press conference to report the latest progress of the epidemic.
