cootstar was appointed leader after the last one died mysteriously. the leader was his mother, burrowstar, who had three lives remaining when she passed. the cats of birchclan wonder how she even died, and some have said that cootstar had killed her three times, though, this hasnt been proven yet. cootstar is very over-confident and boasts about how young they were when they became leader in his clan. however, outside of his clan, he doesnt talk much and is very reserved.

Clan Lore #3: Types of Leadership.
Royalty
The most traditional way of leadership.
The way this leadership works is that a leader’s first born is their heir. If they have no kin or their heirs are too young their deputy will take their place. Adopted kin is included in this method, but have a harder time gaining leadership because of being challenged by ‘real’ kin and by the clan in general.
Ex. Cootstar-Cedarstar-Raggedstar-Brokenstar and Sunstar-Bluestar, we all know Bluestar disowned Stormtail as her father and Sunstar adoption her. Cedarstar and Featherstorm are littermates.
Heirs that are half-clan have an even harder time gaining leadership than adopted ones do. “How can they ever be loyal” most say. If they are part of Royal lines from both sides it makes it worst. Unlike in @warriorsredux , The clans treat half-clan kits like dirt so most heirs just give the leadership to other kin or to someone new.
Leaders can also name their deputies as their heir.
Deputies have heirs too. Either their kit or someone close to them. If they die the leader chooses a new cat or the cat the previous deputy chose to take their place.
In this leadership the deputy stays the same. When a new leader rises the deputy usually stays, only changes if they die or retire than their kits or some new takes the spot.
Leader-deputy
The second most traditional way of leadership. This goes if the old leader had no kin or kin was too young to rule.
When a leader dies, is banished or retires the deputy takes their place.
Ex. Heatherstar-Tallstar
Starclan’s chosen
Sometimes Starclan chooses who will lead a clan. This cat could be part of a prophecy. Dark or Light.
They are groomed from kithood on how to lead the clan.
A cat from this method is viewed to have it easy. They didn’t have to work hard to get the spot it was just given to them. It makes other cats bitter because while they would work hard while this other cat was just given leadership because Starclan said so.
Ex. Bluestar, though only Goosefeather knew this and kept it that way.
Battle for the Star or Blood for the Star
This is the most grimmest way to earn leadership. A cat may challenge the current leader for leadership, if they win the old leader is killed, exiled or goes back to being a regular warrior.
This method is displayed as dishonorable. The cat usually doesn’t get lives from this case, unless Starclan says their worthy.

I love your wc au! Reminds me of reading the small collections of books at my school library.
Btw, how did Edgeworth become Graystar?
I believe he becomes Silverstar sometime after Goldenheart is exiled (AA4 parallels I'm still trying to work out), succeeding Cootstar and finally allowing the old cat to retire (he doesn't die, he's just. Not leader anymore!)

I'm sorry, your Judge warrior cat au design is just mwah. He manages to give off the exact energy you get from the judge over several cases worth of interactions in a single pose. Immaculate. I physically cannot imagine the judge in any other way now. Thank you.
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL COOTSTAR WHAT'S GOING ON.
