I want to be clear that I am NOT an expert in trade unions: My experience is limited to the IBEW and I’ve only been a member for four years. That being said:

My experience thus far is that 99% of being in one is the same obnoxious bureaucratic bullshit as national politics on a smaller scale. Everyone loves to bitch about the administration: It’s corrupt, they’re just giving themselves raises for doing nothing, the business manager is doing his “recruiting” exclusively in the bar, the negotiators are licking the contractors’ boots, we inexplicably voted to give the golf club ten thousand fucking dollars, they don’t actually care about us, they’re just sitting on their asses doing politics while we work to support them. And then you ask “so are you going to meetings and voting?” and the answer is always “hell no, I’m not giving up an evening a month to go listen to a bunch of bullshit”.

Obviously I 100% support forming and joining unions, they offer way more protection and support than non-union workplaces, and they’re a powerful force for labor rights. Just . . . remember they’re just made up of all of your coworkers, including the ones you hate, and they require the involvement of the membership to actually function. It’s a lot of compromising and politicking and bullshitting, it’s not a magic bullet to fix labor problems. Half the time I can’t even agree with my coworkers on what the problems ARE, much less how to fix them!

#i can't even blame the administration for the golf club thing that was a membership vote and i'm STILL MAD ABOUT IT #but i'm also angling for my union to pay me to go to a women in construction conference in december so what can i say #anyway i just feel like a lot of the 'FUCK neoliberals WORKERS RISE UP' people would be disgusted if they actually attended any of my union #meetings #like i'm not happy about it either! we should be doing more wildcat strikes and sympathy actions #but here we are #construction #labor rights

Ooo we've got some nice meaty questions here, let's get into it :D

I've never played SDV but I love your SDV fics and I was wondering if, since Sebastian seems to be a fighter guy, that will become difficult/scary for Alex because of his violent dad?

Sebastian actually isn't a 'fighter guy' in the game, he's just a teenage goth nerd who lives in a basement doing IT. Heh.

But in the story, he is a fighter, and you'll see in chapter 5 actually that some of his actions are triggery. He's already been scary to Alex! Just by reaching out to him in the last chapter, and Alex expecting to be shoved. Sebastian assumed it was homophobia, but Alex was unconsciously triggered re: his father.

This is actually something the story is going to address. A lot of people see Alex as the school bully re: Sebastian, but Sebastian - while less violent - was far more verbally and emotionally abusive to Alex as a bully, and the scars cut deep. It's definitely not gone or forgotten, that's why they keep re-enacting old patterns that are quite toxic when they're together. Sebastian jumps to conclusions, Alex tends to let himself be repeatedly insulted, while getting incredibly defensive.

So Sebastian has been both difficult and scary for Alex for a lot of reasons, from his traumatic past, to confronting Alex with his own queerness, to now just also being quite a brusque and unknowable quantity as an adult.

And will Sebastian avoid drinking around him like Elliot did?

I don't know! He might later on, but I haven't decided yet where Sebastian will stand on alcohol. He's got a long track record of going to the tavern with his friends, and he offered Alex whisky, and while he realised belatedly it wasn't a great thing to do, that's someone who's definitely not thinking ahead about his impact on Alex.

I have a terrible memory, anon, thanks to the ADHD, which means I don't actually remember any advice about writing characters that I've ever received to have a single favourite!

But these are things that I think are important:

It's important to give your characters (all of them, even the minor ones) goals of their own, and obstacles that will stand in the way of those goals (they can be internal or external or both). A character's goals can change!

I like to come up with 'three things/flaws that will change for this character, and three things/flaws that will stay the same.' I feel like it creates characters that have more depth. For example, in Falling Falling Stars, Efnisien has many things about him that change, but by the end, he's still someone who is -> shy and needs some assistance in life, chronically disabled, and quick to put himself down even though the language has changed. Everyone keeps some flaws, that's what makes us human.

Make sure your characters don't all sound like each other, or like carbon copies of you. If you're writing fanfiction you can do dialogue research. There are times characters might sound similar to each other (a family, all grew up together, friend-group with in-jokes etc.) but it's still going to often sound different to you.

Page 1. ---- Overcrowding Believed in Part to Blame For Some Disorders ---- FULL INQUIRY MADE ---- Each Convict's Story is Heard in Confidence at Kingston --- OTTAWA, Nov. 8— (Star Special by Staff Correspondent)— The probabilities are that, out of the disturbances which have occurred in certain of the penitentiaries, there will come an early enlargement of some of these institutions or the construction of additional buildings. 

The prisons when built did not contemplate the population which they now house. The convicts incarcerated number about 4500. 

This is double of what it was a few years ago. 

From time to time, there have been additions but, constructed by prison labor, the operations are very slow. Thus, at Kingston, a new building, now nearing completion, has been under way for eight years, but it is being utilized and another one fitted up to relieve the congestion, 

WORK MAY BE EXPEDITED If it be decided to add to the accommodation or otherwise improve that which exists in the penitentiaries, it will not be surprising if the work may be expedited by letting of contract. 

At St. Vincent de Paul, two outbreaks have occurred, the major one on Friday and a small affair yesterday. The trouble is declared to be wholly out of sympathy with the convicts at Kingston. 

The investigation which is going on at Portsmouth is said to be very thorough. The story of each convict is being heard and treated a confidential. At St. Vincent de Paul, similar lines are likely to be followed. Then, when the reports are received, there will be decision as to whether anything demanding amendment which is disclosed as to conditions in the Institutions or treatment of the convicts justifies public investigation.
