Nishant, Amit To Lead India’s 9-member Squad For 2nd Olympic Qualifiers

The Boxing Federation: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has selected nine boxers, including the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion Amit Panghal (51kg) and World Championships bronze medallist Nishant Dev (71kg), to represent India at the second World Qualification Tournament of Paris Olympic Games 2024 scheduled to take place from May 23 to June 3 in Bangkok, Thailand. Panghal, who recently won the gold medal in the Strandja Memorial tournament, is the current national champion and has been looking in great touch. Nishant, on the other hand, reached the final stage of the first Olympic qualifier held in Italy in March and was one win away from securing the Olympic quota. They will be accompanied by another Strandja gold medallist and national champion Sachin (57kg), 2022 Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (+92kg) and national champion Sanjeet Kumar (92kg). Abhinash Jamwal (63.5kg) and Abhimanyu Loura (80kg) are also part of the squad that will compete for Paris 2024 quotas in their respective categories. Former youth world champions Ankushita Boro (60kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (66kg), who is also the current national champion, will look to add two more quotas in the women’s category. There are five new additions to the squad that competed in the first Olympic qualifiers that took place in Italy. Ankushita, who played in the 66kg category in the first qualifier, will compete in 60kg this time around. India has already secured four quotas for Paris 2024 with Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) confirming their berths with impressive performances at the Asian Games A total of 51 Olympic quotas will be available in the 2nd World Qualification Tournament 28 for men and 23 for women. In the year 2026, a situation of doubt is being seen about the Commonwealth Games to be held in Australia. The Government of Victoria has now refused to host these games due to the increase in the budget. In the information given by the government there on July 18, it was told that due to doubling the budget for organizing these games, we are not fully able to host it.More than 20 events are to be organized in the Commonwealth Games 2026, in which more than 5 thousand athletes will participate. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews informed about his decision to refuse the event in a press conference that we were approached by the Commonwealth Games Federation last year to host it. The Premier further said that when we got to host it last year At that time, the estimated expenditure for organizing these games was about Rs 15 thousand crores, but when we started preparing for it, now the current expenditure has increased to Rs 34 thousand crores. Therefore, taking a decision not to organize it, we have also informed the Federation about this decision. We have gone through many difficult situations. We cannot organize by reducing the money of school and hospital.

Federation expressed displeasure over the decision:-

The Commonwealth Federation has also expressed displeasure over Australia, which has hosted the Commonwealth Games 5 times so far, expressing its inability to organize such a sudden event. Regarding the decision of the Victoria government, the Federation said that they did not give us any information before taking this decision. Reflections on the Commonwealth Games - Part 1

During the summer break, along with other members of our community, I volunteered as part of the Commonwealth Games. It was a fantastic few weeks across the whole region and I am sure many of you were involved or attended some of the events.

Alongside volunteering, I managed to watch some mountain biking, hockey, beach volleyball and rugby 7s. I was particularly interested in the hockey, partly because it is ‘my sport’ but also because as a volunteer, I was part of a small group looking after the hockey teams and their training. This meant I was able to see their training and how they then performed on the pitch.

We needed to make sure they had enough water, that ice baths were ready and pitch side equipment was available, but once this was done, there was time to watch some of their training sessions. I had hoped to get some ideas but many of their drills were similar to ones that I already use. The difference was the focus and intensity they brought to each practice session. While this wasn’t the case with all teams, the English women (and to be fair, also the Indian women) were incredible. Off the pitch, they were relaxed but the moment training started, they followed every word from the coaching team, they practised every small detail over and over again and they focused on the things they could control, such as set pieces. Most of the sessions were based on breaking down small elements of the sport rather than practice games.

In Tuesday’s assembly and during some of the pastoral information evenings, Mrs Press spoke about how small changes to our daily habits can have a significant cumulative impact. At the Year 11 pastoral evening, Mrs Skilton led a session looking at different ways that we can learn information and prepare for examinations. During both of the sessions, I reflected that what I saw from the England women’s team was a good example of what was being recommended. By avoiding distractions, they maximised their time on the pitch, which allowed them time to relax off it. By focusing on the key skills and routines, it meant they performed when it mattered. They won the gold medal beating Australia in the final.

Dame Laura Kenny Announces Retirement From Cycling

Dame Laura Kenny: Olympic gold medalist and seven-times World Championship title holder Dame Laura Kenny, announced her retirement from professional cycling on Monday.Announcing her retirement in an Instagram post, Kenny wrote: "Thank you cycling for everything you've given me - including a husband and our growing family!” wrote Kenny on Instagram. "Having people say I have inspired women and girls to get active and get on a bike means the world to me. Thanks to Team GB, British Cycling and all the partners who have supported my journey. A special thanks to every team mate I have had over the years and of course to my family for being the best support unit I could ever have wished for. It's now time to move on but stay following for the next chapter,” she added. In 2012, she achieved her first gold in the women's omnium and team pursuit at the London Olympic Games. At the Tokyo Olympics - delayed to 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic - Kenny won team pursuit silver before she and Katie Archibald became the first Olympic champions in the women's madison, a new event at that year's Games. She is not only the most decorated female Olympian but the first woman from Britain to win three gold medals in a row. Her final significant achievement was taking first place in the scratch race at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022. She won her last world champion rainbow jersey in 2016, on the London track where she made her name, in the omnium and scratch race. Kenny is also a 14-time European champion and won three medals, including two golds, at the Commonwealth Games. Dame Laura's retirement comes less than two weeks after British Cycling's performance director Stephen Park said there was only a "slim chance" of her competing at the Paris Olympics this summer.
