Sanjay Singh Elected New President Of Wrestling Federation Of India

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh: Sanjay Singh, a close aide of deposed WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was on Thursday elected as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India. Voting took place earlier on Thursday following a lengthy legal tussle as the federation remains suspended by the international federation United World Wrestling. The elections were held for 15 posts, including the president, treasurer, secretary-general, and senior vice-president. Former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was deposed following a lengthy agitation by a group of grapplers led by Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat. Punia and Malik had recently met sports minister Anurag Thakur seeking ways to prevent Brij Bhushan's aide from contesting for president but to no avail. More to follow. Read the full article

It exposed an ugly picture which showed that how women are caged down in a socio-political scenario on the basis of their gender and compulsory heteronormativity. This also helped in re- amending of the Constitution as the Congress led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) introduced the new Criminal Law (Amendment) Act,2013 in order to bring more stringent punishments for heinous offences.

Acclaimed and medal winning wrestlers are strenuously protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MLA , Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on grounds of sexual misconduct of female wrestlers including a minor . But still the voices of the wrestlers continue to be unheard as the authorities have taken no action to apprehend Singh. What's shocking is that the Civil Societies are keeping silent due to the institutionalised corruption creeping in.Thus though the events had a significant potential for mass mobilization , they failed to provoke the systematically desensitised hoi polloi. In the current era , protesting or even questioning are being deemed as ,"anti-national" and once again the ugly aspects of exclusive nationalism that the internationalist par excellence, Rabindranath Tagore had warned about ( i.e. prevention of consciousness about the sense of separation of one's own people from others) is sadly coming true.

Thus , I would like to end this on a positive note by quoting the bard, Rabindranath Tagore ," I will not buy glass for the price of diamonds and I will never allow patriotism to triumph over humanity as long as I live."

Wrestling Body Chief Questioned Twice By Delhi Police: Sources

Two police cases have been filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. New Delhi: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the country's Wrestling Federation chief and BJP MP accused of sexually harassing some of the country's top wrestlers, have been questioned twice by the Delhi police, sources have said. The police -- who have formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter -- have questioned around 200 people in the case as well, sources said. The police, sources said, will file a status report in the court, listing the details of all the inquiries they have held so far. Sources said the police have looked into every allegation and questioned the people allegedly present at the time. On April 29, two separate police cases were filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, after allegations of sexual harassment by seven wrestlers, one of them a minor. The cases were filed after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police. One of them is under POCSO, the stringent law against sexual assault of children. The MP, who is yet to be arrested, has denied any wrongdoing and accused the wrestlers of framing him. He has also challenged the wrestlers to undergo narco-analysis along with him to settle the issue. The row, on since January, exploded in April, with the wrestlers holding a public protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, demanding his arrest. Farmers and khaps from Haryana joined in to show support. On May 28, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament, the Delhi Police cracked down a protest the wrestlers had planned to hold near the building. Visuals of champions Vinesh Phogat and her cousin Sangeeta Phogat being manhandled and pinned onto the ground by the police were widely circulated, evoking shock and outrage across the country. Last week, the wrestlers went to Haridwar to consign their medals in Ganga, days after the Delhi Police crackdown. They postponed their plan after intervention by farmer leader Naresh Tikait. On Saturday, some of the protesting wrestlers had an hour-long meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In an interview with NDTV, ace wrestler Bajrang Punia denied rumours that they have reached a settlement.
