Favoring the British Crown: enslaved Blacks, Annapolis, and the run to freedom [Part 1]
Tumblr media
This watercolour sketch by Captain William Booth, Corps of Engineers, is the earliest known image of an African Nova Scotian. He was probably a resident of Birchtown. According to Booth's description of Birchtown, fishing was the chief occupation for "these poor, but really spirited people." Those who could not get into the fishery worked as labourers, clearing land by the acre, cutting cordwood for fires, and hunting in season. Image and caption are courtesy of the Nova Scotia Archives, used within fair use limits of copyright law.
In 1777, William Keeling, a 34 year old Black man ran away from Grumbelly Keeling, a slaveowner on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which covers a very small area. [1] The Keelings were an old maritime family within Princess Anne County. William, and possibly his wife Pindar, a "stout wench" as the British described her, would be evacuated July 1783 on the Clinton ship from New York with British troops and other supporters of the British Crown ("Loyalists") likely to somewhere in Canada. [2] They were not the only ones. This article does not advocate for the "loyalist" point of view, but rather just tells the story of Blacks who joined the British Crown in a quest to gain more freedom from their bondage rather than the revolutionary cause. [3]
Reprinted from my History Hermann WordPress blog.
Black families go to freedom
There were a number of other Black families that left the newly independent colonies looking for freedom. Many of these individuals, described by slaveowners as "runaways," had fled to British lines hoping for Freedom. Perhaps they saw the colonies as a “land of black slavery and white opportunity,” as Alan Taylor put it, seeing the British Crown as their best hope of freedom. [4] After all, slavery was legal in every colony, up to the 1775, and continuing throughout the war, even as it was discouraged in Massachusetts after the Quock Walker decision in 1783. They likely saw the Patriots preaching for liberty and freedom as hypocrites, with some of the well-off individuals espousing these ideals owning many humans in bondage.
There were 26 other Black families who passed through Annapolis on their way north to Nova Scotia to start a new life. When they passed through the town, they saw as James Thatcher, a Surgeon of the Continental Army described it on August 11, 1781, "the metropolis of Maryland, is situated on the western shore at the mouth of the river Severn, where it falls into the bay."
The Black families ranged from 2 to 4 people. Their former slavemasters were mainly concentrated in Portsmouth, Nansemond, Crane Island, Princess Ann/Anne County, and Norfolk, all within Virginia, as the below chart shows:
Tumblr media
Not included in this chart, made using the ChartGo program, and data from Black Loyalist, are those slaveowners whose location could not be determined or those in Abbaco, a place which could not be located. [5] It should actually have two people for the Isle of Wight, and one more for Norfolk, VA, but I did not tabulate those before creating the chart using the online program.
Of these slaveowners, it is clear that the Wilkinson family was Methodist, as was the Jordan family, but the Wilkinsons were "originally Quakers" but likely not by the time of the Revolutionary War. The Wilkinson family was suspected as being Loyalist "during the Revolution" with  “Mary and Martha Wilkinsons (Wilkinson)... looked on as enemies to America” by the pro-revolutionary "Patriot" forces. However, none of the "Wilkinsons became active Loyalists." Furthermore, the Willoughby family may have had some "loyalist" leanings, with other families were merchant-based and had different leanings. At least ten of the children of the 26 families were born as "free" behind British lines while at least 16 children were born enslaved and became free after running away for their freedom. [6]
Beyond this, it is worth looking at how the British classified the 31 women listed in the "Book of Negroes" compiled in 1783, of which Annapolis was one of the stops on their way to Canada. Four were listed as "likely wench[s]" , four as "ordinary wench[s]", 18 as "stout wench[s]", and five as other. Those who were "likely wench[s]" were likely categorized as "common women" (the definition of wench) rather than "girl, young woman" since all adult women were called "wench" without much exception. [7] As for those called "ordinary" they would belong to the "to the usual order or course" or were "orderly." The majority were "stout" likely meaning that they were proud, valiant, strong in body, powerfully built, brave, fierce, strong in body, powerfully built rather than the "thick-bodied, fat and large, bulky in figure," a definition not recorded until 1804.
Fighting for the British Crown

When now-free Blacks, most of whom were formerly enslaved, were part of the evacuation of the British presence from the British colones from New York, leaving on varying ships, many of them had fought for the British Crown within the colonies. Among those who stopped by Annapolis on their way North to Canada many were part of the Black Brigade or Black Pioneers, more likely the latter than the former.
The Black Pioneers had fought as part of William Howe's army, along with "black recruits in soldiers in the Loyalist and Hessian regiments" during the British invasion of Philadelphia. This unit also provided "engineering duties in camp and in combat" including cleaning ground used for camps, "removing obstructions, digging necessaries," which was not glamorous but was one of the only roles they played since "Blacks were not permitted to serve as regular soldiers" within the British Army. While the noncommissioned officers of the unit were Black, commissioned officers were still white, with tank and file composed mainly of "runaways, from North and South Carolina, and a few from Georgia" and was allowed as part of Sir Henry Clinton's British military force, as he promised them emancipation when the war ended. The unit itself never grew beyond 50 or go men, with new recruits not keeping up from those who "died from disease and fatigue" and none from fighting in battle since they just were used as support, sort of " garbage men" in places like Philadelphia. The unit, which never expanded beyond one company, was boosted when Clinton issued the "Phillipsburgh Proclamation," decreeing that Blacks who ran away from "Patriot" slavemasters and reached British lines were free, but this didn't apply to Blacks owned by "Loyalist" slavemasters or those in the Continental army who were  "liable to be sold by the British." In December 1779, the Black Pioneers met another unit of the same type, was later merged with the Royal North Carolina Regiment, and was disbanded in Nova Scotia, ending their military service, many settling in Birchtown, named in honor of Samuel Birch, a Brigadier General who provides the "passes that got them out of America and the danger of being returned to slavery." Thomas Peters, Stephen Bluke, and Henry Washington are the best known members of the Black Pioneers.
The Black Brigade was more "daring in action" than the Black Pioneers or Guides. Unlike the 300-person Ethiopian Regiment (led by Lord Dunmore), this unit was a "small band of elite guerillas who raided and conducted assassinations all across New Jersey" and was led by Colonel Tye who worked to exact "revenge against his old master and his friends" with the title of Colonel a honorific title at best. Still, he was feared as he raided "fearlessly through New Jersey," and after Tye took a "musket ball through his wrist" he died from gangrene in late 1780, at age 27. Before that happened, Tye, born in 1753, would be, "one of the most feared and respected military leaders of the American Revolution" and had escaped to "New Jersey and headed to coastal Virginia, changing his name to Tye" in November 1775 and later joined Lord Dunmore, The fighting force specialized in "guerilla tactics and didn’t adhere to the rules of war at the time" striking at night, targeting slaveowners, taking supplies, and teaming up with other British forces. After Tye's death, Colonel Stephen Blucke of the Black Pioneers replaced him, continuing the attacks long after the British were defeated at Yorktown.
After the war
Many of the stories of those who ended up in Canada and stopped in Annapolis are not known. What is clear however is that "an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 black Americans left the 13 states as a result of the American Revolution" with these refugees scattering "across the Atlantic world, profoundly affecting the development of Nova Scotia, the Bahamas, and the African nation of Sierra Leone" with some supporting the British and others seized by the British from "Patriot" slaveowners, then resold into slavery within the Caribbean sea region. Hence, the British were not the liberators many Blacks thought them to be.Still, after the war, 400-1000 free Blacks went to London, 3,500 Blacks and 14,000 Whites left for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, where Whites got more land than Blacks, some of whom received no land at all. Even so, "more than 1,500 of the black immigrants settled in Birchtown, Nova Scotia," making it the largest free Black community in North America, which is why the "Birchtown Muster of Free Blacks" exists. Adding to this, these new Black refugees in London and Canada had a hard time, with some of those in London resettled in Sierra Leone in a community which survived, and later those from Canada, with church congregations emigrating, "providing a strong institutional basis for the struggling African settlement." After the war, 2,000 white Loyalists, 5,000 enslaved Blacks, and 200 free Blacks left for Jamaica, including 28 Black Pioneers who "received half-pay pensions from the British government." As for the Bahamas, 4,200 enslaved Blacks and 1,750 Whites from southern states came into the county, leading to tightening of the Bahamian slave code.
As one historian put, "we will never have precise figures on the numbers of white and black Loyalists who left America as a result of the Revolution...[with most of their individual stories are lost to history [and] some information is available from pension applications, petitions, and other records" but one thing is clear "the modern history of Canada, the Bahamas, and Sierra Leone would be greatly different had the Loyalists not arrived in the 1780s and 1790s." This was the result of, as Gary Nash, the "greatest slave rebellion of North American slavery" and that the "high-toned rhetoric of natural rights and moral rectitude" accompanying the Revolutionary War only had a "limited power to hearten the hearts of American slave masters." [8]
While there are varied resources available on free Blacks from the narratives of enslaved people catalogued and searchable by the Library of Virginia, databases assembled by the New England Historic Genealogical Society or resources listed by the Virginia Historical Society, few pertain to the specific group this article focuses on. Perhaps the DAR's PDF on the subject, the Names in Index to Surry County Virginia Register of Free Negroes, and the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada (UELAC) have certain resources.
While this does not tell the entire story of those Black families who had left the colonies, stopping in Annapolis on the way, in hopes of having a better life, it does provide an opening to look more into the history of Birchtown, (also see here) and other communities in Canada and elsewhere. [9]

Pt 2 hatred in waves
Tumblr media
( It's finished~
You weren't supposed to exist anymore. However Eywa had other plans. You were brought back a week after the recom accident in the forest. Instead of being sent with the other recom team led by quatric. You will be going on a solo mission so the far islands
You will also be accompied by a child that can speak na'vi. He calls himself Spider and he hated your guts when he first met you. Spider went on telling stories on how you're such a bad person. You don't know what this kid had experienced but he looked like...mind my language but he looked like dog shit when given to you. You gave this kid a needed bath and redid his hair and blue makeup.
It got worse on the boat with the two of you alone. This kid reminded you of a street dog. Instead of following you like some of them do this kid bit you many times when you tried to give him food. They didn't find an island till a week later. At that both you and Spider were tired.
AT one point you threw a ball at the wall and it hit your face. Spider laughed until it hit his face as well. The both of you just stared at each other until your let out a rubble of laughter. You haven't laughed in so long it hurt your stomach.
The next day you went to a nearby island the feeling of solid land beneath your shoes felt great. You brought no weapons on you except for Spider. With his bites he might as well count. The chief of the tribe seemed scared of you. Spider looked at you worried hearing what the chief was saying. The others got here before you and burned their homes. You looked at what was once their home and felt rage in yourself.
You thanked the tribe and gave them supplies you had left over and left the island. Spider's eyes looked at you concerned your eyebrows which have not relaxed since the news. "I'm going to kill Jake sully and the fucking Colonel..." You whispered under you breath.
Cutting to Jake sully and his family they had recently got word of a Na'vi father and his human kid searching for him and helping some tribes. Jake was confused at first who could be searching for him with a human kid?
Going back to you Spider wouldn't let you go. Spider had started a fight when you tried to teach him how to tye a not. He yelled at you saying it was so better being with the na'vi then with you. So you said "well were about to pass by a tribe why not be dropped off and find you own way home hm?" Instant regret filled you when you saw the child charge towards you.
DO you know how frightening that is? You can't even escape the boy! You jumped on a table but he had a hold on your leg. "Family doesn't leave each other were sticking beside each other till the end" He said hugging your leg.
It's been 7 hours he hasn't let go it was very awkard using the bathroom with one leg outside the door. Spider let you go after agreeing to be his new dad. It was a forced agreement.
However now the two of you are in a different situation. You found Jake sully or well his kids found you after finding Spider. Jake didn't recognize you at first but Neytiri did. Neytiri seemed to be on edge at the sight of you. You were taller than her now looked younger as well. It seemed to be impossible but she did kill that Colonel douche twice two days ago. Maybe this was a gift back to her for killing him.
Jake's face was of most absolute shock when he recognized you. The parents had to explain your story multiple times. That was mainly due to them falling asleep.
There was one thing you wished you remebered...The weeks before your death was not recorded so those memories of you past didn't transfer. You are not aware of how they treated you and captured you those years ago. But they are...
You better bet they are gaslighting you into staying. Even Got Spider and the other kids on it. Spider is telling you to stay and to settle with them. You just want to go back to your cabin and hang out with Spider may throw a ball with him or something?
One morning you woke up before everyone and swam past the reef near your boat. It was calming until you discovered the remains of a boat... Corpse after corpse trapped in the boat. Dread filled your stomach when you saw a familiar arrow in one of their chests.
You emerged from the water and hurried to your boat. You slipped on the board heading towards the main control. You heard steps above you. Somebody was at the front of your ship. "He must be here we can't let him leave us like last time.."
huh? you had to do a double take these parents which you didn't even know that well are trying to keep you from leaving. You got up slowly hiding behind some boxes that held some nets. You saw Jake and Neytiri go near to where you were. Jake almost slipped on the trail of water that was left. Neytiri held and arm to help him catch his balance.
How did they find you anyway? You were well pass the reef swiming!
Neytiri seemed to scan the boat not seeing you luckily. "He must still be in the water we need to look before he's to far!" Jake yelled running out neytiri followed shortly. She looked dissapointed that you weren't there.
You needed to get spider and run for it.
You emerged from you hiding place but it was to late for you to realize they brought the kids to search. Spider saw you and even before you could stop him from saying anything he smiled...he smiled in this way that unnerved you. "They said we can be an actual family...isn't this great dad?"
He spoke while walking towards you with wide arms waiting for you to hug him. You did that to him once after he caught a fish. He avoided you at that point. Spider remembered this...You froze as he now hugged you with a smile.
Jake and Neytiri came back seeing you being hugged by Spider. "See now this isn't bad is it?" Jake said joining the hug. Neytiri didn't react the same way. She grabbed your hair and looked you in the eye. "You like this boat to much we will all stay in this boat with you"
Sully's stick together
Now you apart of this sickly family forever

Colonel Tye, Loyalist Guerrilla
Tumblr media
Colonel Tye earned a reputation as the most formidable guerilla leader in the Revolutionary War. During his years fighting for the British, Patriots feared his raids, while their slaves welcomed his help in their liberation.
Tye, originally known as Titus during his early years in slavery in New Jersey, escaped a particularly brutal master in 1775 and joined the British army after the Crown offered freedom to any enslaved person who enlisted. While Tye stood out as a soldier from the start, the British didn’t station him at pitched battles. They saw more value in using his knowledge of the coveted New Jersey territory, which sat between British-occupied New York and the Patriot’s center of government in Philadelphia. The Redcoats needed to take this middle land—and believed Tye could help.
The British were right. Tye excelled at raid warfare there. His familiarity with the area gave him an advantage in attacks on Patriots’ lands. And his daring, skillful execution kept his Black Brigade soldiers largely unscathed as they plundered homes, took supplies, freed slaves and sometimes even assassinated Patriot slaveholders renowned for their cruelty. The British recognized Tye’s impact on their success and, out of respect for all his contributions, bestowed on him the honorific title of Colonel. He remains an important symbol of fearless resistance.

Good news! The Card Counter has been sold to Focus Features (same distributor that is handling Oscar’s other film, Armageddon Time):
Tumblr media
Focus Features strikes again.
The indie film company continued a torrid acquisitions streak, nabbing rights to Paul Schrader’s revenge thriller “The Card Counter,” one of the hottest titles available at this year’s Cannes Film Festival virtual market. “The Card Counter” is Schrader’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated “First Reformed.” The cast includes Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe.
It’s the latest splashy buy for Focus, which also recently nabbed James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” and Justin Chon’s “Blue Bayou” out of this new, coronavirus-mandated virtual Cannes.
“The folks at Focus are the best at what they do,” Schrader said in a statement. “Over the years I’ve been jealous of directors in the Focus fold. Now happily I am one.”
“The Card Counter” focuses on Tell (Isaac), a gambler, whose spartan lifestyle moving from one casino to the next is shattered when he is approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to exact revenge on a military colonel (Dafoe). For Tell, helping Cirk may be a chance at redemption (a core theme in many of Schrader’s works), but the decision has unforeseen consequences.
Schrader, whose writing credits also include such iconic features as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” wrote and directed “The Card Counter.” Martin Scorsese, who directed “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” as well as the Schrader-scripted “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Bringing Out the Dead,” will executive produce the film.
Focus Features will distribute the film in the U.S. and Universal Pictures International will distribute internationally in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, ANZ, China, SE Asia (excluding Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and television), Japan, South Korea, Latin America and on various airlines.
Braxton Pope, Lauren Mann, and David Wulf produced the film. Other executive producers include William Olsson, Lee Broda, Joel Michaely, Ruben Islas and Stanley Preschutti.
“At a time when many of us are left wondering whether it’s our circumstances that corrupt souls or if it’s corrupt souls that create the circumstances, no one can say for sure, but has anyone explored this more in film than Paul Schrader?” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski in a statement. “All of us at Focus can’t wait to hear and see what Paul has to say now more than ever before, and we’re very proud to help him bring this story to the world.”
HanWay films represented the international sale of the film. Schrader’s rep, David Gonzales, and Endeavor Content handled the U.S. sale
Isaac is represented by WME and Inspire Entertainment, Haddish by Artists First and UTA, Sheridan by Mosaic and WME, and Dafoe by CAA and Circle of Confusion. Schrader is represented by David Gonzales. Both Sheridan and Isaac are also represented by attorney Mitch Smelkinson. The production is represented by attorney Joseph Lanius.

Quick update on last week’s post– here’s an accompanying spot illustration, highlighting Colonel Tye. I’ve heard the painting arrived safely in NJ. I’ll let you know when it’s on display!
Colonel Tye was an escaped slave, who fought as a Loyalist in the American Revolutionary War. He led a multiracial military group, 80 years before the American Civil War. In fighting for the British, he fought against his captors and tormentors, for his continued freedom.

The Card Counter: Tiffany Haddish Joins Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe In Revenge Thriller
Martin Scorsese is executive producing the film, which also stars Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe and Tye Sheridan. Oscar Isaac will play the lead in the original feature as Tell, a would-be card shark living a spartan existence on the casino circuit. A chance meeting with Cirk (Sheridan) leads to Tell joining forces with him to help carry out a revenge plan against a military colonel (Dafoe). With backing from gambling financier La Linda (Haddish), the trio goes on the road, from casino to casino, with the unlikely goal of winning a World Series of Poker tournament. [x]

- The victims of the battle were Thanagarians against the parademons. No idea for the first but the last one sounds like the ennemis in the JL films, both animated and real.
- Apokoliptans kakash are parademons. Kakash is an insult. I took it :)
- Lieutenant Thal is Hawkwoman and Captain Hol is Hawkman.
- Apokolips stole Nth metal, a rare material from Thanagan. What does Darkseid whant to do with it?
- “Earthlings biosigns” the metaslaves :( Now Aliens see Earth as a threat...
- Commander Talak is pretty deft or blind, or stubborn for not understanding it or he took a bribe for Apokolips?
- “We should send our Hawk fleet to put Earth on quarantaine.” As it happened in the first JL series? Will Earth have to fight Hawk and Darkseid at the same time?
- Guy gives me life xD He’s like an adult Bart! He found a new lead to save the metateens!
- (So much information in 3min!)
- Tara, Violet and Forager are cute with their burrito.
-Don’t talk about Wally! :’( “Today’s the day” ok, now I’m crying... Aquaman cheer me up!
- I’m sure James Gordon still worked with Batman secretly, right?
- Of course, Granny accused Dakar Marlowe of this debacle... who’s dead and can’t tell the truth. “New and improved technology” the same problem but more difficult to shut down... Great. And they will still give found the MHYC.
- Garfield just did like his brother-in-law and lost his shirt :D “I know what you are, Gretchen.” That was a stupid move, Gar...
- Mogo, the sentient Green Lantern planet, exists in YJ verse.
- Did Guy just sing about his ass? Kakash!
- Now they’re on the Team I want them to interact with the others. OMG Violet is NB!! Brion is a supportive boyfriend as always! They’re so cute when they’re embarassed! And Tara is smiling at them!
- “I’m really thrilled you discovered who you are inside” Believe me, M’gann went there before, with her color skin insecurities.
- The Hall of Justice is still in ruins? :( The UN has a satellite near the Watchtower? It’s to spy on them? “Who watches the Watchmen?” Seriously?
- Now, Lena Luthor, Lex’s sister, runs LexCorp. Is she secretly working with him? LexCorp is also giving fonds to the MHYC? That can’t be good news...
- Gretchen is torturing poor Barda :( Is she controled too? Or just brainwashed? So Granny works directly for Darkseid, is she part of the Light to spy on Earthlings?
- Desaad, we saw him in season 1 and at the end of season 2.
- “It wasn’t torture, it was discipline.” Sure, all abusers say that...
- Did Victor sense Violet’s text because he’s connected to her as Father and Motherbox or just connected to technology in general? Victor seems so embarassed :(
- Helga feeling useless just to lay her hands on Victor? Nobody sees that?
- Tara is working with Slade as she’s recording Dr Jace’s words. Is she against her and not the Team for once?
- Heil? Now Darkseid is the new Hitler. Or it’s Granny?
- Barda is brainwashed.
- Still no sound in space, the battle is pretty cool :)
- So clever to punch the wall at the same time than the missile to cover.
- Section 16.
- “Sommon the Furies!” Will we see Scandal’s girlfriend?
“Stay whelmed.” Did Superman picked that directly from Dick or from Conner?
- Missing 8 from Markovia. Aren’t they 6 now or were they other teens? Who is the blue skin boy and why does this girl have a drawing on her forehead? Magical tatoo like Atlanteans?
- All the stolen materials served to build this machine. What does it do?
- Whoa, the Furies can go hand to hand with the big hitter of the JL!
- Granny is definitely a sadistic... she attackes her own team slaves. Not surprising.
- What is it doing? They look like they disapear like Wally. Will it the one who’ll bring him back?
- Being saved by their “ennemies” maybe will turn the Furies into good.
- Of course, Superman, the only man, is the one who succeeded to go out... Even Superman can’t breathe in outter space?
- Garfield is not happy with Granny...
- Wolf and Bioship again!
—————————— Leverage
- Four 16 in 30 sec, a record!
- It’s the alien animal from season 2!
- The producer knows Granny can “ruin” a person. So she’s not as sweet as she want us to believe even in her civies...
- Auntie Mouse, this nickname is so cute! Lian is so cute!
- “They always said recon only. It never turned out that way.” I’m pretty sure the first team told him their mission as bedtime stories xD
- Markovia should be in East Europe if it was under Sovietic Union’s influence during the cold war. Maybe Vlatava is also in Central Europe or in East Europe.
- ED! I love his teasing and sarcasm xD
- Is the blonde girl the same they save in the gladiatory in episode 13?
- Did he just say crash? He must hang out with the Team pretty often and took from Virgil who took it from Bart xD
What did he call Nathaniel Newt? Wait, did he mean Neut like Neutron? Why would Nath even wants to be called that? Did he know what he did in Bart’s timeline by the way?
- Inhibitor collars? Are they produced by Granny?
- Polar suits like in the trailer!
- So the green aura can also make illusions and make you invisible?
- Lieutenant Dimitri Plushkin and Colonel Olga Ilyich as Red soldiers/Red Brigade. Area 52. Is that an easter egg for Area 51? Did the Russians took inspiration from Blue’s armor?
- Why the JL is presented as American while it has Aliens as members, Atlanteans and Amazones? --’ It should be presented as an international alliance to protect the Earth and protect humankind, not just the USA... (thank you for the imperialism...)
- Here are Captain Boomerang, Monsieur Mallah and Black Manta.
- “Did anyone tell them?” xD
- The Russian armor look like the ones from a video game, what’s its name again? Blue VS Red?
- “What the what now?” xD
- Artemis just burned BM with words!
- Siblings teamwork!
- The Red transformation was really painful to watch, even with just sounds... Not a magical girl transformation you want to watch every episode...
- “Little Sheila” is that an Australian expression? The only Sheila I know in the show is Tye’s mom but I doubt CB knows her.
- This face it’s was Vertigo’s minion. And Violet is gory again è.é Why is she pink instead of violet? It’s to protect her as she’s healing? What does the pink color do by the way?
- “Halo, Boom Tube” uuuuh was not your goal to not look like bad guys in flee? But to make a diplomatic conversation with the Russians?
- Did CB just made a Looser sign? “They should not be underestimated”. BM learnt his lesson in S2E19 :) So the bad guys and... I assume is Amanda Waller know the JL has a young covert cop unite, crash...
- The US government doesn’t like a competitor as they wanted to eliminate the Rocket Red Brigade and steal their tech for their own. Cold War is back again!
- So she makes them obey with chocks and a promised blown head just like in the film right? She’s quite the same sadistic woman than Granny but it’s ok because she works with the “good guys” understaood (US) governement... She’s even ready to sacrifice US teenagers (well except for Brion and Tara, but you got my point.) Do you realise US governement is worst than the Russian one? Yes, the Red armor seems painful but at least they’re volunteers soldiers and not formal criminals used and tortured like in Guantanamo :( I mean Waller’s ways are the exact ones than Granny’s except Waller isn’t hypocrite about it.
- Ed is so great as a peer counselor, big bro Ed time! She’s the French speaker Black girl we saw in episode 13 right?
- The team is between two fires...
- Brion plays the mole game xD
- Artemis is hurt! But why the laser never made wounds while Halo was gory again with a boomerang?
- Here’s Windfall! She sounds like a character in She-Ra right?
- Livewire is the protective butch girlfriend, isn’t she?
- Wendy is panicking because she realises she hurt someone? And she aspiring the air because she’s hyperventilating or something? “I’m a monster, a monster” Shh, baby girl it’s alright :(
- Big Bro Ed is hurt too :( (emotionnaly I mean) So heartbreaking :(
- They made Belle Reve like the Alcatraz in San Francisco right?
- Kaldur, the only Atlantean who can burn you with words!
- Why does Kaldur ask about Terra specifically? Does he know something? Or it’s because she’s new?
- Here’s Amanda Waller... Is Kaldur more worried about his father’s escape or his father being tortured? Does he know that by the way? or understood it with “very persuasive sticks and “extremely expendable”? Do you remember when we thought hopefully bad guys escaped from the Stagg op and will safely stay in Belle Reve while they were in the same condition and working for Waller? Do you imagine Livewire and Mist nearly suffer that too? :(
- Suicide Squad and Force X, they said it!
- “We all have secrets to keep.” Does he talk about the big secret with Batman and the others? *Artemis nods* You know he can’t see you?
- Dr Jace finally has her lab in Dakota city with... Hardwire? (I love his eyes!) All characters from Static Shock’s show/creator come from Dakota? Vic, how could you accept to be the rat lab from a stranger, possibly evil, and not from your father? :(
- Oh no, Wendy now wears a collar :( And Ed looks so sad about himself :(
- Dr Jace isn’t here only for testing Vic, but Violet too :( Wait... What does that look mean???
- Brion is such a caring and lovely boyfriend :3
- We still don’t know what CB meant by “proposition”... Did he want to make her turn into a bad guy or something?
- So it wasn’t a coincidence, but she opened it because of a bribe. What did they promise to her? offer to her? did she know it was for an assassination? Now Violet has a secret from her boyfriend about her past. She is Artemis’ mentee after all...
- Brucely! Where is your plushie? :(
—————————— Illusion of Control
- Aaaw! Bart hugs everyone like in season 2! :3 Ed is there and WAIT! Was that a kiss? *check again* I don’t know what this is supposed to be but it’s something right? And Ed is smiling at him!!
- Supermartian house! Forager moves his horns, so cute! Those scenes remind me of season 1! But Vic is still depressed and lonely :(
- Artemis, Will, what are those looks? Paula, stop making assumptions...
- Brion and Tara are there two!
- Dr Jace is not happy with what she found... Nothing good, guys!
- Ed’s smile again! I love it!
- OMG Jaime is so bad drawn this season... What happened to him?
- Gardita? Dudes, YJ fans can find better ship names that this, forget Gardita...
- “What didn’t you tell they’re coming?” Maybe because Jaime wanted to make a surprise for you maybe?
- “It’s so nice to see you again.” So crash Perdita often hangs out with the Team :) “I’m a big fan!” She’s so cute! :D
- “I feel like a fifth, sith, seventh wheel.” Poor Virgil :( Wait, that means there are 3 couples here, who are the third one... OMG is Bart and Ed? Ok, make sense after the “kiss” scene. Unexpected, but let’s see their dynamic! :D
- “Where’s the rest of the Team? Like, you know, Cassie?” Virgil misses his BF :)
- Lian is so cute! Did I already hear this mix of songs? In Misplaced, season 1! Why season 3 has so many season 1 vibes? Especially when Wally is still missing :(
- Violet doesn’t feel good. Probably because of Gabrielle’s action?
- I love Artemis’ Markovian accent! xD
- “Tara had been through a lot / She doesn’t talk much”. Silent could be a consequence of trauma :( Or is it because she doesn’t want to risk to blow her cover or to get attached to them?
- “It’s so nice that you two include me” Helga, stop, you make things suspicious.
- Aw, Ed has heart eyes while looking at Bart :3 “My friend” Wait, what? Are they still pining for each other? And the rest of the team know and wait for these two to make a move? Because Jaime and Traci seem to know Virgil was talking about them.
- “Watch me terrorise the other drivers.” Ed, the other drivers are mostly your students, don’t terrify them too much xD
- Bart’s smile is so cute! And it’s a genuine one!
- “You’ll pay for that, peasants!” I love Perdita! So great she can still have fun like a normal teenager!
- “Got to get a girlfriend” *next scene about lonely Victor* Is that a foreshadowing or...? Was I right when I said Vic can be gay in YJ?
- “Forager must help uncrush Victor Stone!” Forager is still cute. Why all the team are so cute? :D
- I love when Ed’s face soften when Perdita says they’re friends :) In Spanish! :D I’m sure Perdita could speak few foreign languages plus English and Spanish :)
- Wendy still wearing an inhibitor collar :( Aw, Perdita is so sweet with her, like they are two normal teen at high school :)
- Of course Bart did eat all the food in ten meters... And I love Ed’s amused face and Bart’s shock when he realises he did eat all the cotton candy xD (I just remember the scene in Teen Titans with Robin and Starfire and cotton candy ^^)
- Livewire brings cotton candy to Mist! :D
- Ed’s feel down despite all the work he does here. Do you want to create a club with Kaldur? Of course Bart supports him :)
- And Traci nudges Jaime again :( Now I understand why the nudge hurted him in Far Away episode: he has bruises here... Is that the only thing we’re going to see them do as a couple? :(
- Wait, did Bart say “Maybe I did eat too much cotton candy” or “Baby I did eat too much cotton candy?” Because it’s a lot different!
- Everyone is sick. Uh... Poison? Oh that’s Vertigo’s minion agin. There’s he is. No, Perdita is in danger! But she still has the nerve to punch him! Karabast! :o
- Arg, that should hurt to trip at superspeed :( And hurt to run at superspeed in jeans and not in a frictionless suit :( Of course Ed teleports next to him to see how Bart is :D
- Does Blue has canines that big all the time or it’s an effect on the suit?
- Lonely Vic again :(
- “I don’t have a Hive, Fred.” Don’t worry, Vic, you’re not the only freak here. Heck you’re talking to an alien!
- Butterfly Vic :) That would be another common point with Blue! (Yeah, I want them to interact at some point)
- Vic is still worried for Fred but don’t want to show it :)
- Scarab is back! I missed his snarky and sarcasm comments! And Blue is still tired by his suggestions! xD “Scarab wanted to blow it up, didn’t he?” Traci should see those interactions so often xD But it’s great she accepts Scarab :) Blue’s smile after she succeeded! And it’s me or Scarab sounds jealous? “Dude, you’re the king of overkill” xD
- “It’s good. Could use a little salt” My mom could say something like this xD
- “I’m so thankful to have been included.” Helga, you’re a terrible actress... Am I the only one seeing this? Or all the characters are blind? (Except Jeff, he’s a lost case, he’s in love... Actually why he’s in there with his lover?) Or I’m just overanalysing and YJ is leading me in a wrong path?
- The way Jace insists on the hero part feels like she’s doing this on purpose...
-Why Tara and Brion feel so bad? It’s not their fault! Or did they tell something to Jace thinking it was an innocent comment?
- Well, Jace didn’t apologise for the argument she created so maybe she did this on purpose. Or am I overreading this?
- Please don’t mention Wally again :( So basically Paula is afraid Artemis got killed in a mission (like she was for fake and like Wally?) and try to scare her with a wheelchair? “What will it take to covince you?” Yes, she’s totally scared and don’t know what to say anymore as a wheelchair (or any big wound) and Wally’s death don’t seem enough. “You don’t have to fight crime to help people.” This point is good, look at Ed :)
- “You and Will” Uh... no Paula, you got too far and that’s not your busines here... “Your sister isn’t coming back and Lian needs a mother.” Have to disagree... You should be worried for your daughter because it doesn’t seem by free will and Lian already has two female figures. So don’t force your second daughter in a relationship just for pratical things... Thank you no thank you.
- Ed and Bart are the two pathfinders/advance men (not sure of the accurate term) of the Team! :D
- I’m impressed Scarab uses metric and Jaime still understands it. They use metric in Mexico, right? That could explain why he’s at ease with both systems (unlike me xD).
- The Team is so clever! Virgil makes connexion that Vertigo doesn’t have those powers; Traci makes the link that what they see is at cause and Gar finds a solution :)
- “What are you made of?” “Sugar and spices and everything nice.” He’s a fan of cartoons for this second reference right? And that reminds me of the scene between Bart and the Terror Twins at Mount Justice. Bart, sweetie, stop punching people stronger than you :(
- I thought the guy was powerless (I mean litterarly), how could he resist a bear’s strenght?
- Uh, that wasn’t Vertigo’s voice. “Be careful my love.” So Vertigo (or whoever this is) is with their minion? Like a boss and his secretary?
- Perdita going straight for the nuts xD Vertigo killed her father? That’s why she was queen at ten :( She should talk with Brion and Tara, they also know an uncle who killed their parents for the throne...
- It was Psimon, make so much sense! I knew I know this voice! Meaning the other is... Devastation! We know theiy’re together since episode 13.
- “He... She was Devastation!” Jaime would never misgender someone! :)
- I love when the girl saves herself but the boyfriend is still worried for her :)
- “Are you... Come on!” We feel you, Virgil!
- The Team is still so clever to connect the clues. Of course Big Brother Ed is worried for Wend and the others ^^ (He didn’t name any other kids. Is it because he “failed” her and not the others?)
- Bart and Ed finish each other sentence! :D
- Bart is so clever he put fire againt ice xD
- No the boom tube, the boys will be kidnap... Oh come on! I theorise for months about this scene! “Don’t want to know where that would lead us;” Bart, I tried to figure it out for months, be kind.
- “There’s just no pleasing you...” Jaime, be gentle, Scarab is learning, you see?
- After their fight in season 2, it’s good to see Ed openly worries for his father :)
- Gar is so pissed about the covert part since 2 episodes.
- Poor Violet, it’s not her fault :( But Jace is more and more suspicious. Wanting to keep secrets like this... Did she speak German with “Hallo”? “It’s been a long time.” Who is she calling? Jeff? Someone we don’t know?
- It’s Mal and Karen! :D
- Vic rejoins them and Forager is happy! Vic is smiling!
- “I’m more a lemonperson myself.” Bart, what are you saying? xD Don’t change! And that goofy smile xD
- Ed’s soft smile! :D (while looking at him?)
- Virgil, you’re good, you don’t need a girlfriend for that D: But he’s so awkward at flirting it’s so sweet!
- Did the “hot” comment was necessary? è.é
- Gar is up for something... Going solo behind the Team’s back?
- Forager is eating with/in the bioship:3 Wait did he fart and burp inside of her too?!

Soldier of the Black Pioneers, a Loyalist American unit comprised of escaped or liberated slaves active during the American Revolution.
British policy throughout the war was to free slaves owned by pro-revolution masters (though conversely freedom was not offered to the slaves of white Loyalists). Throughout the war huge numbers of slaves were freed by Crown Forces or fled to British lines. As many as 30,000 gained liberty in this fashion, including a third of Georgia’s enslaved population.
Former slaves were forbade from serving as line infantry in regular British Army regiments, but many took up combat roles either in Loyalist American units of the Provincial Corps, such as the Ethiopian Regiment and the Black Dragoons, or as more irregular volunteer soldiers, such as Colonel Tye’s famed Black Brigade. Resistance to the white revolutionaries was so strong that small groups of black maroons describing themselves as “the King of England’s soldiers” continued to fight from inhospitable swamps in the South years after the Revolution had actually ended.
For those who didn’t fight directly, the British employed thousands of freed slaves as labourers behind the lines. Black pioneers were largely responsible for constructing the defences at Yorktown, but as the siege wore on starvation and smallpox caused Earl Cornwallis to eject many blacks from the defences. Many of these were seized and re-enslaved by the Continental Army, with Washington himself going to great lengths to recapture his so-called “property.”
Having said this, the British did not wholly abandon the pioneers and their families - at the end of the siege the articles of surrender permitted each British officer to evacuate with up to two servants. The British abused this ruling by ensuring hundreds of blacks were smuggled out of Yorktown under the guise of service. The Royal Navy likewise attempted to evacuate fleeing slaves along the coastline of Virginia in the weeks after the siege.
After the war thousands of former slaves relocated and settled in both West Africa and Canada. It was the biggest emancipation in America until 1863.

Tye Sheridan, Tiffany Haddish, and Willem Dafoe Join Oscar Isaac in Thriller THE CARD COUNTER
Tumblr media
Actors Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), and Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Lighthouse) have joined Oscar Isaac (Triple Frontier, Star Wars: VII-IX) in the upcoming revenge-thriller, The Card Counter. Paul Schrader, known for writing cinematic classics like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, is writing and directing the film, and has collaborator Martin Scorsese on board to executive produce.
Variety provides the following story description:
In The Card Counter, Isaac portrays a card player on the casino trail who sees a chance at redemption when he’s approached by a young man (Sheridan), seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel (Dafoe.) With backing from a mysterious gambling financier (Haddish), the duo go from casino to casino and set their sights on winning a World Series of poker tournament.
This sounds fantastic! It’s an exciting story, and has a great cast and crew attached. I can’t wait to check it out. Does this sound like a movie you’ll enjoy?
