You spent years working with the Chase family as an off and on babysitter for their youngest daughter. Being a student in college with a full week of classes meant you couldn’t get a full-time job and all the part-times in your area never paid well but the Chase’s were very generous with their pay. You usually only babysat on the weekend which you never minded, Hannah was a sweet girl and your usual weekends were spent with a book anyways.
There were a few times when Mr. and Mrs. Chase wanted to go out so they asked you to stay over and watch Hannah. That’s exactly what happened that fateful night your life was changed. The only reason you were ever in the house was for Hannah, you weren’t meant to be there and yet you were. You’ve spent years wishing you had turned them down when the Chases first offered you the job.
That night you were in Hannah’s room playing with her as her parents were preparing to go out, Jill had already left with her boyfriend. A loud crash and screams alerted you that something was happening. You hushed Hannah’s question and carefully listened to see if it was maybe just an accident but a loud shrill scream rang through the air, sending chills down your spine. Quickly you snatched Hannah and hid her in the closet.
Just as you shut it a masked man in all black burst through the door. He looked terrifying and the sight of him made you freeze in panic. Every synapse in your brain was firing at 100 miles per hour but your one and only thought in that moment was to protect Hannah, no matter what.
He walked towards you and you forced yourself not to move, running only meant you would be leaving Hannah behind. He reached out with his gloved hand and grabbed your face. A shocked gasp left your mouth as he pulled you closer to him. Being so close allowed you to see his eyes better, they were unnerving and a cold black color.
Gently he brushed your face, almost like he was examining you. He pushed his thumb down on your bottom lip, signaling he wanted your mouth open. You complied and slowly opened your mouth, fear kept you silent as he prodded around your mouth. This was the perfect moment where you could bite his hand but the bloody blade he pulled from his pocket kept you frozen as he had his way with you.
You fought the cry that crept up your throat as he tapped the knife against your lip, he was completely silent and didn’t once move his eyes from yours. He slid the knife past your lips and pressed it against your tongue. The metallic taste of blood flooded your senses and you fought back your scream, not wanting Hannah to hear anything. He grinned and grabbed the back of your head as he began to slide the knife deeper. You clenched your fist and held your breath to stay quiet as the knife began to cut open your tongue as he continued to slowly force it back towards your throat. You gagged as the blood began rushing down your throat and you did your best to spit up what you could.
Another loud scream tore through the air and in a second he pushed you to the ground, his knife slicing your lip, and was out the door. You wasted no time and rushed to the door, locking it before running to grab Hannah. Getting out was your only chance.
She went over to the window and pulled back the curtains, revealing boarded windows. She gasped, told you someone was outside and pounded on the window but you stopped her as quickly as you could. You shushed her as loud footsteps began to make their way up the stairs. Staying in the room wasn’t a good idea so you grabbed her hand and ran out the door.
Hannah let out a loud scream and you turned to see the masked man pulling a badly injured man into a big red trunk. You pushed her to run and he slashed at you with his knife. Too focused on Hannah’s safety, you didn’t even realize he had cut your back. As Hannah crawled under the bed you grabbed and threw any heavy object you could get your hands on. It slowed him enough to let Hannah get away.
You scrambled away from him as he grabbed at you but he was able to get your ankle. Just as you looked back, a man appeared and swung a gun against the man’s head. He let go of your ankle and the stranger pulled you up and grabbed Hannah before leading you both back to her room.
The man pounded on the door as the stranger, who introduced himself as Arkin, set up a trap to catch the man. You crouched with Hannah by the tv while Arkin stood behind her fish tank. The door opened and as you realized it was not the masked man coming in you used your arm to cover Hannah’s eyes as she pushed the tv off. You focused on the masked man as he threw the injured man from the box into the water. He was electrocuted in the water from the tank and you looked away as his body began to seize on the floor.
Once he pulled a knife you picked up Hannah and ran into the next room, thankfully with Arkin right behind you. Arkin shut the door and you froze as he ran into hanging hooks. There were dozens of tiny hooks hanging from the ceiling and a few caught Arkin in his face.
You let Hannah down and she pointed out the laundry shoot, you pulled the stuff off the top as Arkin got himself out. The man began to slam against the dead man’s body against the door as you helped Hannah into the shoot. The man barged in just as Arkin began to help you in the shoot. The man grabbed Arkin and threw him down before he grabbed you as well.
He didn't hesitate to bury his knife into your stomach, you cried out and Arkin pulled him off. And they began to fight. You sobbed as you pulled the knife out and slammed it as hard as you could into the back of the man, you didn't have much force left but you did your best. He faltered for a moment before he turned and pulled you down before he slammed your head into the floor, knocking you out.
Screaming was the first thing you recognized, then it was the pain that flooded your senses. You gasped once you realized that fish hooks embedded in your hands were keeping you upright. They tore and pulled at you painfully.
The man heard your gasp and stopped his torture to Arkin. He moved to you and again grabbed your face, tears streamed from your eyes as he brought his blade up and cut into your cheek and then moved to slice into your chest.
Suddenly lights moved outside the window and the man stopped. He grabbed a bag off the floor and left upstairs. You sobbed and pulled at the hooks but they only hurt worse.
Arkin pulled the hooks down and you cringed as he ripped the hooks from his back. You laughed in relief as he helped free you from your own hooks. He tried to be gentle at first but that only made them worse, you wailed in pain as he pulled them out as fast as he could. The cut on your tongue made it hard for you to move it but you tried your best to thank him once he finished.
He gently shushed your attempt at words and directed you to the desk Hannah was hiding under. You went and got her as he went and checked out another room. Hannah crawled into your arms and met Arkin at the room. He quickly turned you away and your heart stopped when man saw you three through the window.
Arkin led you to the laundry shoot and began to tie sheets around you all. Despite not being able to talk you insisted that he and Hannah go first and with no time to argue, he complied. Once he was up you and Hannah climbed inside. Arkin pulled Hannah up quickly but as you began to climb a dog snapped at your ankle. You kicked it back out and grabbed Arkin’s outstretched hand.
It barked and then quickly left as you scrambled up the shoot, Arkin pulling you up as well. He guided you into the tub with Hannah and you pulled her into your body.
You looked away and covered Hannah as the dog came through the door. Even as Arkin left you didn't move. Hannah trembled at the sound of fighting downstairs. You held her and hoped that it would be Arkin who would come back.
When everything went quiet you and Hannah crept from the tub. You made sure to keep her behind your body as you two moved down the hall. Arkin met you two and grabbed Hannah, he took your hand and quickly pulled you towards the front door.
Hannah helped him search for the key to the door as you watched behind them. A gunshot cut through the silence and you moved to stand in front of her.
Arkin moved you three to crouch in front of the hallway mirror and you held your breath as the man walked in front of you all. He spotted you in the mirror and you pressed your face against Arkin’s back . You flinched as he shot the mirror.
Arkin let the wire go and the chandelier rigged with knives fell on the man. Animalistic screams rang through the house as Arkin pulled you two out the door.
You had no idea where you were running, the pouring rain made it too hard to see. Your only concern was keeping up with Arkin as he ran with Hannah. You cried in relief at the sight of police lights as you all hit the edge of the road.
Arkin set her down and ran into the street to catch the police. You screamed as the police car hit him and his body was thrown over the car. Before you could run check on him, an officer grabbed both you and Hannah. You practically dug your heels into the ground, desperate to get to Arkin but he assured you that the paramedics would help him.
The house exploded as the police were helping you and Hannah into the car. You sighed and hoped that it had killed him too but a sick feeling inside told you that it was too good to be true.
The car pulled away as they began to load Arkin into the ambulance. Since you refused to leave Hannah's side the police agreed to take you both to the hospital rather than fighting to get you into an ambulance. As you two sat in the car, Hannah quickly fell asleep and you followed behind her, leaning your head against the window.
Tumblr media
When you woke up from surgery the cops explained to you that Hannah was going to be taken care of by the state and Arkin had been taken by the man. The news left you so distraught you sobbed so hard the cops had been asked to leave by your nurses.
The cut on your tongue needed stitches and it kept you from being able to speak. The cops simply took a written statement and photos of all your injuries since you couldn't really speak to them. You didn't hear much after, Hannah was being fostered by another family and there was nothing about Arkin.
You struggled to continue on like everything had gone back to normal. Every night you were plagued with nightmares of that man. You hadn't spoken since that night even after your tongue healed. Your life became dark, no sleep, couldn't speak, you couldn't even finish your last year of college.
The first couple days after you were discharged you tried to continue your classes but something about your entomology professor, a class you picked up for hours, made chills crawl up your spine. You couldn't handle it, it felt like the man was pacing the room, the halls, even your house. There was no more simplicity in your life. Every dark corner, every shadow, any loud noise, he was there and he was going to get you.
You were a huge headline for months. Your face and name were practically plastered all over town and TV. People from all over the country sent in mail praising you for your fight to protect Hannah. Others would even come and knock on your door, wanting to get an inside scoop on the horrors of “the collector”. You hated the sound of that name more than anything.
Eventually you gave up and dropped out of college, packed up your life and moved as far away as you could. You spent the next few years moving around, each new place eventually becoming corrupted by the man.
He was still alive and he continued taking and killing people. You tried not to read the articles but you just couldn't help yourself. The nightmares always got worse after you read them. He would be with you, no matter where you went.
Your latest move landed you in Baltimore working at an animal shelter. Caring for animals wasn't really a job that required you to talk and shelters were always the quickest to hire you.
After a week full of nightmares and a lack of sleep left a noticeable difference, your manager gently suggested therapy to you. She had even recommended one that her friend had seen.
With nothing else and the exhaustion finally eating at you, the therapy didn't sound as bad then. When you emailed him about a consolation and even explained about your muteness, his response didn't sound bad either. Through the years of moving you learned ASL and he told you that he knew it as well so he would be able to understand you. However once you were sitting in his room the idea began to feel bad.
Something about being there felt like being back in the Chase's house. Something about him made you feel like you were sitting in front of the man again. He gave you a soft smile.
When he spoke the man wasn't there anymore. He felt like an understanding person you could genuinely talk to but there was something about the way he looked at you, all you could see was the man staring at you.
He introduced himself as Dr. Lecter and had been upfront about letting you know that he did look into the articles about what happened. However his plan wasn't to dig into that night, he wanted to explore the mental scars the man had left on your life.
The consolation went nice and he understood you well, which allowed smooth communication between you two. A small part of you still felt uneasy with him but you pushed it down and decided it wouldn't hurt to start seeing him.
You began to go to his sessions on a regular basis and after almost two months he invited you to dinner with him and a friend. While you did think it was odd for your therapist to be inviting you to his home you did accept his invitation.
His house was gorgeous and big. It made your tiny apartment look like a closet in comparison. Suddenly you felt wrong standing there in your jeans and t-shirt. Before you could leave to try and find something nicer to change into, Dr. Lecter opened the door. You froze and he gave you a smile before stepping to the side so you could come in. You gave him a hesitant smile as you entered and he took your coat. The inside of his house was even more beautiful than the outside.
He led you to the kitchen where a man was waiting. He definitely looked like the forest type, not quite a lumberjack but you could definitely see him living in a cabin out in the woods. There was a warm look about him.
He smiled at you and held out his hand. You awkwardly gave him yours and he shook your hand. He introduced himself as Will Graham and you froze for a second trying to figure out how to introduce yourself as well. You kind of just stood there with your mouth awkwardly open like you were trying to make a sound but nothing would come out. Hannibal stepped in to move you both to the dining room so he could continue making dinner.
Hannibal's dining table was decorated so beautifully. Gorgeous intricate plates and cutlery were set out for three places. Will pulled out a chair for you and you smiled at him as you sat down. Once he sat down too he told you that Hannibal had explained your silence and he had apparently taken learning ASL.
You were shocked that he was putting in the effort to communicate with you. Through the years you grew used to simply existing, never really getting to communicate with others and have conversations. Hannibal had been the first person who used their knowledge of ASL to actually talk to you not just to ask job related questions.
Tears pricked your eyes as he began to introduce himself, his signing was confident and it was obvious he practiced a lot. You grinned and signed back.
He blushed and explained that he was still learning so it took him a bit to understand the signs. You nodded and signed slower for him and while it took a bit of patience you were able to have a nice conversation with him.
When he learned that you worked at a shelter the conversation instantly switched to his dogs. He promptly pulled out his phone and began showing off pictures of them. You were elated to learn that he had rescued all his dogs and you explained to him how badly you wished to have a furry companion of your own but the constant moving kept you from getting one. He promised to let you meet his dogs as Hannibal brought out the food. Your heart nearly burst at the sound of his promise.
Hannibal cut and distributed the food before pouring out the drinks. As he did so he explained that dinner was a stuffed roasted beef heart. To be honest it scared you a bit in the beginning and you stuck to eating the vegetables, even getting an extra scoop from Hannibal when he noticed your hesitance to eat the heart. He in no way pushed you to eat it and you appreciated that.
While he and Will talked about how good it was you decided to finally try it. You were shocked that it was good as they were saying, it was far from bland and it was more tender than you had expected. The stuffing was a good texture difference and it elevated the flavor of the meat. You had all but forgotten about the vegetables as you ate the heart.
Hannibal pulled your attention back to the conversation. He explained that he invited you to this dinner because he wanted to let you and Will know how the therapy sessions would be changing. Apparently you had filled in Will’s usual therapy session after he had gone to prison. Now that Will had been found innocent and wanted to continue his therapy there was a bit of a conflict.
Before you could offer to pull yourself from the sessions Hannibal offered that you two share the session. Since you never fully used the time slot he explained that Will could simply come in and switch out with you. You had no complaints, you usually finished the sessions halfway through the usual time so you were more than willing to split the session. Will also held no complaints and the conversation shifted to different topics.
You all spent the rest of the evening enjoying drinks and talking. It had been years since you had relaxed and talked to people. The wine was making you feel bubbly and you couldn't stop smiling.
Eventually you had gotten so drunk that your signing became a bit hard to read, even for Hannibal. Instead of continuing the conversation he lead you and Will into his gathering area to dance.
You giggled as Will took you into his arms and swayed and moved you to the sound of Hannibal playing piano. You were so happy in the moment you didn’t even question why they hadn’t sent you home but instead chose to dance with you.
When you began to stumble, Will stopped and steadied you before sitting you down. Hannibal quickly stopped the piano and went off to grab you a water and your jacket. Will gently stroked the scars on your knuckles and kept you laughing.
Hannibal brought you the water and helped you into your jacket. Will gathered his stuff to leave as well and Hannibal assured you that he would drive you home. Once Will returned he pulled you into a gentle hug and wished you a goodnight.
After your goodbyes Hannibal led you into his car and got you settled, even buckling you in. You slipped on and out of consciousness the entire ride, at some point you swore Hannibal was petting your head.
When he made it to your apartment, despite you never telling him your address, he helped you inside and tucked you into bed. He whispered a sweet goodnight and pressed a chaste kiss against your forehead as you drifted off to sleep.
The next morning you woke with a headache and no memory of how you got to bed. You texted Hannibal a simple thank you, assuming he had been the one to bring you home and went on to get ready for work.
The split therapy sessions worked out well. You came in and carried on your usual sessions but, the only difference now was you saw Will every time you finished. Most of the time you two would talk before he went in and sometimes even Hannibal joined in. You didn't notice how much they were changing your life until you had woken up in Hannibal's bed.
It was the night of your weekly dinner with them both. Will was telling you about the latest case as Hannibal brought in dinner. He made liver pate with a medley of your favorite roasted vegetables. You learned to hold off on how much wine you drank but that night Hannibal just kept pouring glass after glass. With a belly full of food and wine, Will pulled you into the room to dance like usual. You were floating as Will and Hannibal took turns spinning you around the room, even dipping you a few times.
When the night got darker Hannibal disappeared off to clean up the kitchen while you and Will drunkenly stumbled up the stairs. You laid out on Hannibal’s bed, in awe of how nice his sheets felt. Will flopped down next to you and you both made yourselves comfortable. It took you no time to fall asleep.
You gasped and sobbed as you woke up from a nightmare. The man had grabbed you and was dragging you back down into the Chases’ basement. Your heart stopped when you realized there was an arm around your waist but before you could freak out, your eyes adjusted to the room and you realized that Hannibal was lying in front of you. It was Will’s arm that was slung over your hip, not the man's.
The instant you realized where you were, your body relaxed. As you stroked Will’s arm you realized how much these two had changed your life. If it hadn’t been for Hannibal you probably would have left months ago and meeting Will only rooted you here. The more time you spent with them, the more your anxieties were lessened, the more you were able to live a normal life. Since you became friends with them the nightmares stopped happening as often too. You tucked your head under Hannibal’s and went back to sleep, feeling safer than before.
Hannibal woke you both the next morning and got you all ready for work. After a quick breakfast, Will was off to work and Hannibal insisted he drop you off. The ride was nice and you went to work with the biggest grin.
Things continued on like usual, the only difference was now you and Will would sometimes sleep at Hannibal's place. You fell comfortably into this style of life and with the constant therapy you felt like it could become something permanent.
Then one day Hannibal was different. You went in for your therapy like usual and something about his eyes felt different. The look in his eyes was the same look in the man's eyes. Trusting your gut you slipped your hand into your pocket and gripped your knife. You sat down but didn't fully relax. He obviously noticed your behavior but didn't say anything.
When he asked you a question you didn't answer, still keeping a hand on your knife. He chuckled and walked over behind you, continuing on the conversation. You focused on the sound of his moment as he did something in a cabinet. He moved and you left the chair and held your knife in front of you. Hannibal held a syringe in his hand while he grinned at you. You felt so betrayed, he was supposed to help you, not hurt you.
Wasting no time you darted for the door and threw it open. You almost cried in relief to see Will standing there. Instead of helping he grabbed you and held your arms down, you gasped at the slight pinch in your shoulder before everything went black.
Tumblr media
You woke up in the back of Hannibal’s car with your arms and legs bound. They weren’t paying attention to you and with no other options you started wailing at the top of your lungs. Will flinched and turned around to console you but you simply started to wail louder. Hannibal stopped the car and Will got out to get in the back seat with you. He covered your mouth and asked you to be quiet so that they could explain.
You compiled but threw him a nasty glare as he began to explain. Apparently Hannibal noticed that you were being stalked, he didn’t know by who but they were getting closer to you. You aggressively shoved your bound hands in Will’s face, he apologized as he undid your ropes. Will flinched back when you began angrily signing in front of his face, you were seething and didn’t care that he couldn’t understand because of how fast you were going. Most of it was just cuss words but you did face Hannibal to give him a piece of your mind.
Hannibal apologized as well but he explained that they needed to get you away from Baltimore without tipping your stalker off. They figured that drugging you would have been the easiest and quietest way to do it. You were pissed but you trusted them. Still you didn’t want to see them for the time being so you flipped them both off and curled up close to the window.
It was dark when they finally pulled over to a rest stop, by then you had fallen asleep and Will gently shook you awake so you could use the bathroom. Still pissed, you ignored them as you stomped off to the toilets.
As you washed your hands someone suddenly pressed a knife against your throat. You trembled and looked up in the mirror, your heart shattered at the sight of Arkin standing behind you. He had a scar across his nose, his hair was shaggier now, and his arm was littered with cuts both healed and fresh. He pressed the knife harder against your throat and you cried as it cut into your skin, thankfully not deep enough to cause any problems. You didn’t fight as he led you outside, both Will and Hannibal were nowhere to be found.
You sobbed as Arkin pushed you forward. This man put his life on the line and saved you. He could have left you hanging as a sacrifice while he took Hannah but instead he took the time to help you too. He wasn't meant to be holding a knife to your throat as he dragged you off somewhere.
When you finally noticed the man you couldn’t stop the panic that filled your body and you scrambled to get out of Arkin's grip, you no longer cared how the knife cut you. He moved his arm to get a better grip and you bit down as hard as you possibly could. He cursed and punched you, now free from his grip you took off for the trees. You had no clue where you were going but you could hear that they were chasing you down. A knife just barely flew past you and hit a tree.
You fought the pain and pumped your legs faster but it was no use, another knife flew past you then a third one caught your thigh. You screamed as you hit the ground and Arkin grabbed you again. He pushed the knife in deeper and you wailed in pain. He grinned and straddled your waist as he grabbed your chin to force you to look at him, it was just like the man all over again. You spit in his face and swung at him but just grabbed your wrists.
All those years of running and all along they had been following behind you. You sobbed silently as you began to realize that you were never going to get away, you were going to die to the man. Arkin chuckled and began to say something but Will appeared and pulled him off you. They fought as you struggled to pull the knife from your thigh, your hands were shaking so hard you couldn’t get a good enough grip.
The man appeared but he didn’t care about you, he was too focused on Arkin and Will. He began walking towards them and you knew you needed to stop him. You dug your teeth into your lip as you grabbed the knife and pulled it from your thigh. The pain made your head spin but Will was in danger, you had to get to him before the man did. Your head was so full you almost didn’t notice Hannibal until he helped stand you up, you pushed him towards Will hoping he’d understand.
He did, leaving you leaning against the tree. You couldn’t help but scream when the man slammed his knife into Hannibal’s side. Will scrambled to hit the man but Arkin pulled him into a chokehold. They were beginning to lose the fight and you couldn’t help them.
“S…Stop!”
They all froze at the sound of your voice. It didn’t sound right and you much preferred your silence but you had no other choice. The man pushed Hannibal away and stalked towards you. Will yelled and tried to grab him but Arkin held him back. The man reached out and brushed your face, the same way he did that night. He forced you to look at him, something in his eyes felt like betrayal but the only thing you could feel was fear. This time instead of pulling a knife out he grabbed your face and slammed your head into the tree, knocking you out.
Tumblr media
A gloved hand slapped you awake. You groaned as you opened your eyes, the first thing you noticed was the table set up with the same fancy style Hannibal loved. You tugged at the ropes around your wrists and the man with the gloves shushed you. He pulled your chin up to face him and you met the eyes of the man but this time he did have his mask on. Your stomach plummeted when you recognized your entomology professor and he gave you a sick smile once you realized. You sobbed and shook your head, this man looked you in your eyes and acted like he knew nothing, he even asked if you were okay one day after class and yet it had been him all along.
Will came in and sat something down on the table before sitting down next to you. He gave you a smile like nothing was wrong and you struggled to get out of the chair as Dr. Emory sat down. Arkin gently patted your head as he went to sit next to Will and you were completely dumbfounded with everyone’s behavior. You tried to sign to Will but with your hands tied down you couldn’t.
Hannibal finally appeared with a large dish that he sat down in front of you. He said nothing as he sliced and distributed the food, he didn’t even acknowledge you as he poured you the drinks. You whined to get him to look at you but he simply chuckled and told you to be patient. You ignored him and continued to fight your restraints.
“It’s okay Darling, we decided that instead of fighting each other to have you,” Hannibal paused as he sat down next to Dr. Emory. “We could just share you.”
You looked around hoping this was just the sickest joke in history but the grin on Dr. Emory’s face told you that this wasn’t a joke. All those years of running and you had fallen back into his hands. He finally got you again and this time, you knew there was no getting out.
