2022 Albums of the year!!

1 - Deep in View by Cola

My favorite album of the year. This is what I wish all post punk was like. Theres a clear pop influence here that drives every song and just makes it a joy to listen to. I'm tired of the sad, ominous dirge of post punk (looking at you UK) and this is the completely opposite direction. The instrumentation is fantastic especially the drums. These songs just move you forward and to dance. I really hope we hear more from Cola and more music in this vein in general. Plus I saw them this year and they were great.

Nothing on here quite reaches the peaks of Beautiful Blue Sky by their former band Ought but wow its so so fun.

Favorites: Blank Curtain, At Pace, Gossamer, Water Table

2 - Blue Rev by Alvvays

Idk what else needs to or can be said about this album and Alvvays in general. Impeccable is the first word that comes to mind. The songs are tight, fun, rocky, power-pop bangers. I mean what more can you want from Alvvays? They're falling into that Beach House category where they don't really branch out much because why would they? They're perfect at what they do. That being said I do love some of the newer directions they've gone like the shoegaze influences and especially how psychedelic they get on songs like Very Online Guy (which sounds like if Kevin Parker somehow ended up playing bass in Alvvays).

Just listen to this album 100 times its perfect, its great, I don't know what more you can ask of Alvvays at this point.

3 - Expert in a Dying Field by The Beths

Power Pop! Power! Pop!! Its so back. A lot of what I said for Alvvays applies here too. I love The Beths the guitar work is awesome and Elizabeth Stokes is one of my favorite song writers nowadays. Every song is so fun to listen and sing to. I really preached to everyone about this album because its so good. 2am is one of my favorite album closers ever. What a beautiful, beautiful song and my favorite song this year. It still gives me chills after listening to this album probably a dozen times this year.

4 - Cave World by Viagra Boys

This album was such a surprise! I like Viagra Boys (I mean who doesnt love Sports?) but I didnt expect this kind of album from them. They've always been good but this album is unique and has such a voice. Its the most topical of all the albums on here with all its references to vaccines and adhd and everything. Its all all tongue in cheek (I'm 99% sure lol) but it puts the album in a really fun place. All of the electric and poppy and rocky influences make this such a joy to listen to. I kind of thought Viagra Boys would fall into the sea of post punk bands and put out solid albums every 3 years but this is one I'm going to keep going back to again and again. I'm really excited to see what they make next. Also I neeeeeed to see this live. I haven't seen them yet and they canceled their show near me.

5 - God Save the Animals by Alex G

Is Alex G emo? Why not? This album is a new direction for Alex G after his kind of maximalist House of Sugar and Rocket it returns to more stripped down guitar and keyboard sound. I love the way he writes songs they're sad but hopeful? The lyrics are almost all dark but the instrumentation is so optimistic and you know the people in the song are trying despite their failures. Its very real plus its fun to listen to. Runner is somehow the best country song released in years while emo at the same time. I'm really happy that Alex G put this one together as he's a very important artist for me and means so much. He's so talented and really puts it all together on God Save the Animals.

Jeogeumtong and NOWITZKI first listens

I had to dust off the tumblr profile and tap in when I saw that Beenzino and E-Sens dropped some heat! So far, I’m digging what I’ve heard.

I’m admittedly biased towards Jeogeumtong cause E-sens is my one of my all time, all nation faves. So far my heavy replays are How To Love, WTH, A Yo, Pour It Up, and Work Hard. I love how he and Hukky Shibaseki jumped between 00s east coast sound, 90s/10s west coast sound and then end the album on some feel good 90s Southern rap with Kibun (Devita SLID on the hook) & Real Ones.

Could Do Without: Vanilla Sky, all that damn vocal fry in the chorus made my skin crawl.

Beenzino’s NOWITZKI is so damn soulful, jazzy, and cohesive I love it. InBed/Makgeulli (DPR CREAM strikes again),Trippy, Gym, Sandman, Red Coca Cola, 990, and Crime (that damn 250) are my heavy replays. I’m seeing that this album has a similar divisive social media critique as Kendrick and Chance’s last albums. “tOo ArTsY nOt EnOuGh BaNgErs/wE gEt iT yOu LoVe YoUr WiFe” Anyway, I think I’m in the minority, but I prefer the album version of Trippy it works so well in setting up the second half of the album. It reminds me of a remix to Elzhi’s Colors I heard years ago.

Could do Without: Like a Fool, it doesn’t fit the album overall and that last 30 seconds where he or Y2K92 is almost chewing on the mic; my god WHY?

Also, Dean was sighted last month he was hanging out with The Internet’s Syd and her dad. She posted it on her IG stories. Although, I couldn’t tell if he was in LA or she was in Seoul.

I haven’t heard the E-Sens album yet. Also, I haven’t finished the Beenzino album yet so this was a good reminder to get back on to that.

What you said about “Trippy” I didn’t know there was another version. I kinda expect Beenzino to do artsy shit but I’m kinda uneducated about him. I also felt like his personal stuff was more artsy, mature, and introspective while his songs with the other Illionaire members was the bangers. I do think that what I heard on NOWITZKI was cohesive!

Anyway, I’ll definitely be looking back at this submission while going through the rest of both albums so I can pay attention to the things you spoke about here! Thanks so much!

-donuts -finished writing the prologue to my new fic!! i am pretty proud of it ngl -even if said fic never actually gets finished/posted im really happy with the idea and the daydreams about it -lazy day of watching game shows -mac and cheese when the cheese is good and hot and cheesy,,, -love the vibes of cornmazes... they are better when no one else is there but was still pretty nice to get to wander through one anyways -fall festival vibes in general are nice actually -coca cola in the glass bottles -childhood nostalgia games (minecraft, lego batman 2) my beloved,,, -got another pet dog + axolotl in minecraft :) am also working on a kennel for all my pets i think it’s going to look good -blink has asked me to add the amazing devil album Ruin and while ive only listened to one song so far (secret worlds) i can attest it’s a Banger -blink snipe: exquisite music taste

tuesday again

no prahblem

reading Alas, Babylon, by Pat Frank. I have been trying to read this since winter break, not because it’s awful but because I feel really guilty about reading things for funsies when i am constantly swamped with actual schoolwork. i’m not going to talk about the worst shit in here bc i am very tired in general about post-apoc novels being like this, even though it is perhaps disingenuous to hold a book published in 1959 to modern standards? things that surprised me: there’s an African American family living next door/down the road from the protagonists’ family (who are VERY paternalistic towards them), and there’s a good bit where the protag realizes he’s never heard the dad’s Christian name, and another good bit where the manic pixie twelve year old goes to ask him why all the fish are gone, since no one has apparently thought to ask the best fisherman in the county that???

there are several somewhat deus ex machina things that happen at the end of the book that I am not best pleased by- they feel like Frank wrote himself into a corner and had to get those RPG mood meters filled back up before everyone dropped dead from despair.

i am CONVINCED the librarian and the Western Telegram lady are in lesbians. the town doctor (who complains a lot about his ex-wife) and the protagonist man engaged to a rich girl down the street- I think I could make a solid case they’re both bi. the doctor has protagonist man’s bed, and protagonist man sleeps on the couch in his study. this is the kind of thinly veiled arrangement that makes me go *eyes emoji*.

anyway it was a somewhat more hopeful post-apoc novel than i’m used to, i cannot in good conscience rec it because it’s just steeped in racism (although less bad than I was braced for for a book published in 1959 and set in South Florida) and some slut-shaming for good measure

listening King Princess, Ohio. just ouch. jesus, mikaela, give my fuckin heart a break. this is is slow and sad and unexpectedly slams into a higher gear and i like it a lot

watching Birds of Prey was so much fucking fun. More colorful over the top movies 2k20 please and thank you. The Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend sequence was incredible- turning that dress into a pantsuit was such a good choice. the whole soundtrack is nonstop club bangers. i’m just going to link my favorite song off it again

Take #2 on Post-Modernism

Okay, photo kinda unrelated but healthy reminder.

Wowza, what are these regular updates on this tumblr huh?

Anyway, today was Day 1 of YF camp, and as usual our camp speaker Greg already put out a few absolute bangers (apart from endorsing Mr Shai Linne ofc).

I find it interesting that as of late, more and more church messages and sermons have been centered around the danger of subjective truth. I remember my Church Pastor addressing it a while back, and even before him, I can vividly recall Paul Washer talking about it as well. Effectively, whether the rebuttal arises from the post-modernist's refusal to accept the presence of irrefutable absolute truth, or from the unwillingness to submit to an ultimate authority which governs their decision-making, their worldview crumbles into irrationality and darkness (Wow harsh words but I'm sure Paul and the other apostles were as, if not more harsh).

Anyway, the reason why I am writing this post as I take 176 to West Coast Park is because of something Greg spoke about on Day 1 of YF Camp. In addressing the need to discern the truth, alongside the need to recognize that there is 1 truth, Greg cut to the heart of a topic I have been getting into as of late , namely, presuppositional apologetics.

Presuppositional apologetics (or presupp, for the cool kids), is an apologetic method coined by one Cornelius Van Til. Such an apologetic originated from Van Til's rejection of the other methods of defending the faith that he was presented with, (the evidentialist argument, creator-creation argument etc), a rejection arising from the notion that such apologetic placed the unbeliever as the "Judge", with "God" being put on trial.

In his rejection of said methods, Van Til acknowledged the supremacy of the Word of the immutable almighty God, the Bible, as the absolute standard from which any value judgement or decision must be made. Moreover, another piece of justification for the presuppositional method of defending the faith, one I find very compelling, was Van Til's reference to Romans 1:18. If the unbeliever, is truly as the Bible says, "[suppressing] the truth in unrighteousness", then this means that they already know the truth of Scripture.

In effect, no men or women who denies the truth is without excuse, for all of nature screams the Glory of God, and attests to the existence of an immutable and loving creator. In this light, the apologist should not put the Sovereign God on 'trial', allowing the unbeliever to decide if the Father is 'real or not'.

Rather, the apologist should presuppose (hence the name hehe) the truth of the Bible, and seek to prove the existence and legitimacy of the Father and Christ through the daily assumptions the unbeliever makes about reality, since they know God exists, and are rejecting it in unrighteousness. Another thing I appreciate about this apologetic method is its emphasis on the moving power of the Holy Spirit. In true Ephesians 2:8-9 fashion, presupp highlights that only by the grace of God can men be saved, and only the Spirit can sanctify a depraved people.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness

Alright, now that I've laid out the groundwork of Presuppositional Apologetics, I want to link it back to Greg's talk today. Throughout his talk, I couldn't help but link it back to the unconscious, inconspicuous post-modernism that has seemingly permeated the secular mindset on all levels.

Oh and before I forget, bruh Proverbs 9:10

Something key about presuppositional apologetics is its emphasis on tracing an observation to its root. In other words, it rationalizes every occurrence observable to scripture. To give an example, Van Til would argue that secular morality, logic and axiomatic theory, and an innate sense of justice, are all proof of a transcendent omniscient omnipotent God. In the same strand, presupp forces the apologist to begin their apologetic from the position of every word of the Bible being true. So should the unbeliever question whether they can prove the Bible is real, the response is "Yes I can. The Bible tells me so."

While I can understand the apprehension one might have adopting such an apologetic method, the more you think about it the more it makes sense.

In his book, "Defense of the Faith", Van Til begins by espousing on Ultimate Authority. Whether one is a Christian, an Atheist, a Materialist, a Monotheist, Polytheist, Pantheist, or any other belief system, they unconsciously submit to an ultimate authority. Most of the time such an authority is logic and sense perception, though in some cases it can extend to axioms and morality.

Regardless, the presuppositional apologist takes these assumptions, and points out how without God, they cannot make sense. For the sake of clarification, I will explicate on Morality, especially in the post-modern worldview.

For a post-modern Atheist, they would argue morality is subjective. Should a society or culture advance past a certain point, morality can fluctuate and change with it. In other words, any feelings of injustice exist because of this unspoken shared moral code that everyone agrees on.

The issue here is twofold.

Firstly, for an atheist, morality should not matter. If men really is borne not in the image of an immutable God, but is just a bunch of chemicals, or on a more macro-level, quarks bouncing off each other, then there is no basis for morality. Really, men is just a bunch of chemicals acting a certain way at a certain temperature. In that case, why should one dictate a certain moral action? What differentiates men from a bottle of coca cola that is shaken and opened, with fizz leaking out. If men has no intrinsic value, then why is there even a debate about morality? Arbitrary concepts like right and wrong, which a debate attempts to determine, do not exist if the two debaters are composed of noises concocted by atoms in motion. Some atheists would argue that morality arises from a need for mankind’s self-preservation. Here, the question becomes one of degree. Where does such a rule extend to. If morality is innately understood by every human, yet is entirely subjective, then does this mean that because my morality states that I will kill anyone with squeaky shoes, a squeak from your Converse Sneakers warrants your death? Evidently that is not how morality works. Morality is not simply composed of two groups of people shouting at each other, with the louder group determining the morality of the system. If men has an awareness that things like murder, sin, and adultery are wrong, but this is not to arise from the presence of a Just God who has placed in every men and women’s heart a notion of his justice, then where does this morality extend to? Even if I can agree that within my family, we share a sense of morality, why should this ethical code extend to those outside my direct sphere of influence? If someone’s long-term longevity is of no direct interest to me, why is it wrong to rob your neighbor? In the same vein, why is it wrong to wage war on other nations should their interests not at all align with mine? Here, the atheist’s argument for having a coherent moral system completely falls apart. This is what Van Til calls the futility of the non-Christian worldview. In the futility of the Atheistic Worldview, we observe the “impossibility of the contrary”, where in the absence of any other explanation for morality, the Christian worldview can account for one. Similarly, for the secular Post-Modernist, they are quick to state that while something might be true for them, it does not have to be true for others. In short, subjective truth. This is dangerous for many reasons, but on the logical front, it is self-contradicting. Many Post-Modernists will even admit that they do not know what is ‘true’ for sure. All one has to do to refute the post-modernist is ask them if they know THAT to be true. If the post-modernist cannot claim to know anything to be true, their argument is incoherent and any knowledge claims are inconsistent with their worldview, in which case their worldview likewise crumbles into absurdity. To quote the man, Mr Paul Washer, in his indictment of the post-modern mindset, “either I am right and you are wrong, or you are right and I am wrong, or we are both wrong, but we CANNOT both be right!”

Hopefully through this very brief example, it has become clear (to at least some degree) how the presuppositionalist is to defend the faith. In having a consistent and coherent epistemology, the apologist is to hold up the ultimate authority of the Bible above all other things. Only through this can a logical argument emerge. Yet, and this remains key, regardless of the apologetic one employs to explain the faith, I pray that the a love for the unbeliever, a love that mimics the love of Christ, is what motivates our pleading with them. The apologist is to plead with the unbeliever as one pleads with blinded people in a burning building. While I often times find myself trading blows with others when talking about the faith, especially in using presupp, we have to remember above all, to hold fast to the truth of the gospel, that God became man, and bore the wrath of all who believe, such that they might in grace, find eternal salvation. Brothers and Sisters, let us encourage each other in the time we have on this earth, that we preach as dying men and women, to dying men and women, that they might in grace and mercy, find the salvation that they know to be true, and know of the sweetness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Conceptualism, Post-modernism and Activism

Another banger of a lecture. I support design activism and think it’s a great initiative for starting conversations about important issues. It’s an opportunity for designers to use their skills to make a positive impact in the world. The extremes of which would have to be discussed on an individual basis.

A recent example of this is the design responses to COVID-19 and social distancing. Designers altered business logos, developed communications, and positioned messages to promote social distancing. The effectiveness is up for debate, but I think it’s good to see action supporting the cause.

What's so good?

This track does everything thing for me; catchy synths, groovy beat, and a music video that ends in a murder. To be fair though, that bully had it coming, and is there really sufficient literature along the lines of "he had it coming" in the current judicial set up? "Muchas" being released on renowned French label Ed Banger means there's a strong possibility we're all in for an album in the near future. When that day comes, provided the lizard people haven't laid siege to our nations' capitals, I'll be a very overjoyed late adolescent man.
