Vicious Fun

At one point in Cody Calahan’s VICIOUS FUN (2020) a police officer (the very funny John Fray) explains his love of horror to his fellow cops, proclaiming that when horror bleeds into other genres it can be “delightful.” It sounds like he’s describing this film, a horror comedy admittedly aimed at those with strong stomachs but also those who enjoy a good serial killer romp. Josh (Evan Marsh) is a horror film reviewer or, in the words of the roommate he’s crushing on, a loser. After tailing her latest boyfriend (Ari Millen) to a remote Chinese restaurant, he stumbles into a 12-step meeting for slashers. They represent a cross-section of killer stereotypes, including a Jason/Michael Myers type (former wrestler Robert Maillet), a killer clown (Julian Richings) and an American psycho clone (Millen). There’s also a woman (Amber Goldfarb) with a secret of her own that takes the plot in a different direction. The meeting has an improvisatory feel. It’s like a deadpan SCTV sketch as it combines affirmations with comparisons of each member’s M.O. for finding, killing and getting rid of victims. And the fights and kills, though gory, have a slapstick edge. Films like this are the reason I sit through so much crap.
