Martin Newell is a musician from Wivenhoe, Essex, England. Started his musical career in 1973 when he had joined the Colchester glam rock cover band to replace former member, Steve Greenfield. Jumping to another band to become popular in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia area. They had released one single 7-inch EP, and shortly after Newell left the band to become a “musical recluse”.
How I came to know Martin Newell is through his band, Cleaners from Venus, created in the end of 1980. The band issued material on cassette and signed to the West German independent label, Modell Records. As Newell’s musical career continued, he turned solo but still is releasing music under the name Cleaner from Venus.
Today’s album is Midnight Cleaners, by of course the Cleaners from Venus. I discovered this album in the fall of 10th grade and it has stuck since. Newell to me, carried the creative force but in the late analog age that had been similar to Syd Barrettes. Each song on this album is soaked in nostalgia, funky lyrics, chorus effects and thrumming basslines.
Each song on the album is a different story told by Newell and feels as if it’s a chapter book. “Only a Shadow” tells the story of a lonely man looking for the face of another in the world around him. Then paired with the soft intro of “Corridor of Dreams” leading you into a world of night lights, and the human experience of people walking in and out of your life. Newell creates the perfect soundtrack to a young teenagers life, like my own, that struggles with realizing your dreams, understanding what home is, and connecting with other people. Under all the dreamy guitar and cutting synth is a hand reaching out to you, daring you to be creative and dream no matter what you may be facing.
I’d pair this album with a chilly fall day, crunchy leaves under your shoes and some of the best people you know walking in-front of you. Talks of how high school might play out, young love, anything that may seem as a John Hughes film trope.

6/11/23.
I bought this a couple of weeks ago during a sale by Superior Viaduct. Flaming Tunes were a one-off collaboration between Gareth Williams and Mary Currie (originally from Cardiff, Wales). Gareth had just returned from India - a trip he took after leaving the band This Heat - and reconnected with his childhood friend Mary Currie.
The result is Flaming Tunes. The Superior Viaduct page mentions pastoral British psych-folk and early Residents. I also hear Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Momus, The Great Unwashed, and Cleaners from Venus. But make no mistake, this deserves its experimental tag...but it also deserves a lo-fi pop tag.

Cleaners from Venus - Krugerrand Gladiators (In the Golden Autumn, 1983)
You are very dissipated
You are very overrated
You are like a broken generation
Someone gave us each a flower
And you like yours but mine is sour
Now you'll only play at gladiators

It's the time of year when the flower dies
It's the kind of night where the ghost will rise
Searching for a girl with the dancing eyes
Who could stay all day but leave next night
Instinct should have told me it never worked out right
Now I'm very nervous, I leave on my light
But I walk outside, I walk outside, but it's
Only a shadow, only a shadow
Only a shadow but she looks like you
Only a Shadow - Cleaners from Venus
