I got [my Höfner V3] for 19 quid in Guitar Village Shaftsbury Avenue when I was 17 in 1970. People didn't reckon it much as a guitar because then it was prog rock and everyone was doing widdly-widdly and this was a jangly-jangly sort of guitar. But it came into its own in The Cleaners From Venus!
What a nice surprise. The Cat Collects is a UK label run by Jodie Lowther. This is a 4-way CD containing three songs each from Rachel Love (Dolly Mixture), 3am Again, The Cleaners From Venus and Jodie Lowther herself. Lowther does the artwork for the CD and has done covers for each artist on other releases (3 am Again have a CD on Subjangle).
Each artist has one track available here. And each artist represents a season - Rachel Love (spring), 3am Again (summer), Cleaners From Venus (fall) and Jodie Lowther (winter). Despite the fact that there are 4 different artists, there really is a common, relaxing sound to all the songs.
Fuck it,gonna come up with a new post idea for every week. A Spotify Discover Weekly Top 5 to share the weird shit i listen to.
1. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare - Mr. Bungle. A wacky track that reminds me of the whole music style of Tally Hall and MM with a very tiny bit of LD sprinkled in there.
2. Thy Mission - The Garden & Mac DeMarco. Kept this baby on replay a few times, letting their chords and experimental ways carry me away. A Beautiful Combination of Indie and Experimental Rock
3. Love and Freedom - Keith mlevhu. A Classic from a Striking time in Zambian History. 1976 was when this Zamrock gem came out,12 years after Zambia gained independence from Britain.
4. Summer in a Small Town - Cleaners from Venus. "I'm not going mad, I'm not going mad." Perfectly sums up my feelings on this Psychedelic track,Astonishingly crafted by these English Aliens.
5. What's inside a Girl - Daughters. A very messy cover of the Cramps Classic..in a good way. The Psychobilly style is prevalent, with their Noise Rock roots creeping in there. They absolutely kill this cover, which (in my sole opinion) i find better than the original.
*Disclaimer:I am not a pro at discerning genres meticulously, but i say it as i hear it. Sorry if i got any die-hard fans upset.
89. heaven (live) - talking heads
there is something abt the live version of this song that decimates me fully and i can't explain why !! it feels so different to ur average talking heads song bc it's just david and tina doing a semi-acoustic performance, but it's also somehow really tender and i <3 that
11. rattlesnakes - lloyd cole and the commotions
lloyd cole my beloved !! one thing abt me is that i will eat up bookish 80s indie pop every single time and he is no exception
77. don't sit down 'cause i've moved your chair - arctic monkeys
i went to see arctic monkeys in january this year & this was on the setlist :-) it just scratches an itch in my brain, especially when the drums come in and the "yeah yeah yeah" refrain too !! i have always been a suck it and see (2011) advocate bc i feel like it's the most underrated am album and i said what i said
34. tugboat - galaxie 500
i was interviewing a music archivist, jen matson (@indieephemera) for my substack and she mentioned how she had taken some early photos of galaxie 500 ! it made me think abt how i've never really listened to their stuff (+ one of the bassists for the chills had a stint in galaxie 500 for a bit) so i listened to tugboat & i adore it
