Hey guys, hope you all have had a lovely winter solstice and a Merry Christmas! Somehow, this fic got deleted, so I'm re-uploading it! Special thanks to @lxdymoon0357 for helping me write this fic. Check out their content, it is amazing!
Just a heads-up, I am temporarily removing Loving Promise on a Broken Ring from the masterlist so that I can polish it to be the best version it can be. When it's ready, I will post the fic back onto the blog. I will be posting a couple of fics in 2024 here and on my other blog, @an-idyllic-novelist.
These headcanons can see read as either romantic or platonic :)
With that being said, sit back, relax, and let's dive inside the pages of novel.
Amongst the supporting characters Anthanasia had read about in The Lovely Princess, there was one person who had stayed beside the original First Princess of the Obelia Empire even when it seemed like the entire world was against her: [First Name] [Last Name].
[First Name] [Last Name] had come from a well-known family, trained by Felix Robane himself until she was worthy enough to be sworn as the ‘sword’ and ‘shield’ of the First Princess, her personal gaurd. Although Jeannette had won over Claude’s affection with her unrealistic optimism and kindness, [First Name] was not swayed over to the female lead’s side. Nor did she believe Anthansia would try to poison her own half-sister out of spite. In fact, she had been the only one.
Regardless of what the knight believed, however, the First Princess still died by the Emperor’s hand. The loss of Anthansia drove [First Name] to commit suicide in her grief, and then she disappeared for the rest of the novel. After Chapter 9 in The Lovely Princess, the novel’s world revolved around Jennette Margarita and the male lead.
…Which is complete and utter bullshit! [First Name] went through so much character development in the spin-off stories featuring Anathansia, which she had actually enjoyed reading a lot more than the original content. Why would the author throw that out of the window again like she did with Lily’s character?! Augh, stupid book, stupid writer!
Now that she had been reborn as Anthansia, she refuses to allow events in the novel’s timeline that will endanger her life before and after she turned eighteen. Anthy's initial plan had been to steal as much as she could from the Ruby Palace, hoarding it in a secret area until there was enough funds to escape the country.
Plan A went up in smoke because she had met Claude four years earlier. Now….God, she had to act cute and try to make sure he doesn’t get bored of her or else he’ll kill her! He’s a meanie! A tyrant! What kind of asshole would just sit and watch his daughter drown in the lake or carry her like a sack of potatoes! If there’s anything that was remotely positive about this series of unfortunate events is that she got to know Felix.
Felix was nicer than Claude, and he was the one who had recognized [First Name]’s potential to become her knight!
Maybe. Maybe if she played her cards right with the Emperor and Felix, she’ll get [First Name] to come to her palace sooner!
But if Anthy does that, then [First Name] will have to go through two, or even four years of training under her Daddy’s personal guard until she is deemed qualified to protect a member of the royal family! Argh, even calling Claude that name is embarrassing enough!
And yet…
If she does change the story even a little bit for the sake of her survival and bring her favorite character here sooner than how it’s written, then…[First Name] won’t throw her life away as she had done in the original work. She’ll get to live a comfy life here, train to her heart’s content, maybe even join Anthy for tea parties! Anthy would like that very much, and she definitely wouldn’t tell her to take ten steps back when they walk through the palace together.
Then when the time is right…when Anthy is able to leave the palace and allow her half-sister to become the new princess in everyone’s lives….she’ll bring [First Name] with her. After all, there’s no other reason for Anthy to stay here except for Lily. And a lady always needs an escort wherever she goes, right?
….Right?
Athanasia de Alger Obelia will use her intellect and charm to ensure that you, her most precious knight and favorite character, will survive the series of unfortunate events that were written in this crappy novel world. Even if it means she will have to play the part of a sweet and cute daughter in front of the man who had caused her death in the first place.
If she wants to go for a stroll in the garden or gets dragged to go on a boat ride with Claude, make sure to stay nearby. She doesn’t want to lose sight of you.
Athy will insist that you come to her tea parties too. She would love to see you in a dress, but knows it would damage your reputation if she began to treat you, someone of a lower status, as an equal…even though she desperately wants to.
When there is time in her busy schedule, she will come and seek you out at the palace training grounds. She wants to see how you are progressing under Felix’s guidance and be assured that you aren’t being treated badly by the rest of calvary. If you are, just say or point your finger at the culprit. She will handle the matter personally.
No hard feelings if she becomes a little bit clingy though, okay? Athy adores you, and it’s normal to spend a lot of time with a person that you like from morning to night. Just don’t leave her for side. That’s all you have to do….if you want to survive in this hellhole. Don’t even think about asking the court magician about the princess’ behavior towards you. Luca will just shake his head in pity, wondering how in the world did the princess become so infatuated with someone like yourself and not see Duke Alpheus’ son stares at Her Highness with that same disgusting expression.

Some interests and things you like: I have so many interests, so many hobbies. I like languages and history and writing most. Cooking also. I hope sometime in the next year to write my first novel finally. I try to be active and used to really enjoy it before The Bad Period - I used to rock climb and hike every day, and during the pandemic I was buff. Nowadays I'm a lot more sedate.
Some funfacts & trivia about you: Here's two truths and a lie: my spine is made of titanium, I'm directly related to Erik the Red, and I'm a licensed yoga instructor. Have fun!

Favorite Pokemon type & Pokemon: Fire, Gyarados (close tie with Delibird)

If you were an Engage character, which Emblem would you Engage with? Probably Sigurd. Dat Momentum.
How did you find TOA? I knew of it in the periphery because I thought I'd check the Raven tag to see who else creates Raven content on Tumblr. I saw the post where mirae dropped him. Then in February, Elf popped into a mutual server and posted, I checked the Wanted List and saw my boy. And here we are.
Current TOA muses: Raven, Igrene and Beowolf
Who was your first TOA muse? If you don’t have them anymore, could you see yourself picking them up again? Raven. My son with every disease, always and forever.
Have you had any other TOA muses? I've also written Sigurd and Saber. Fly high kings, legends in my heart always.
Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? Sad Family TM. Joking aside, I like to think I have a pretty good range, and I still have more musetypes, simply waiting to be released from their enclosures.
What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? I love writing rage, and horror. On the flip side, I also genuinely love writing cheesy, healthy romantic fluff. Duality of man. And of course I froth at the mouth for Family. Reaches -
Favorite TOA-related memory: When I flipped from writing Sigurd re-proposing to Deirdre immediately to responding to a Hector interaction with Raven. Also, when Sigurd got accepted - my heart rate skyrocketed, I was so excited.
Got any delusions that didn’t see the light of day in TOA that you’d like to share? We'll see what the future (Halloween) holds.
How do you pronounce TOA? The acronym! T-O-A, but blended together. Teaoea

sorry but do you know at what age exactly claude killed his brother and father and became emperor??
Sadly, we don't have much canon information about Claude's exact age, so I wouldn't be able to tell you with 100% accuracy. I can, however, make an educated guess using the novel's canon.
Funnily enough, the one who gives us the most clues about Claude's age is Felix. This is a surprising fact for some people, but Felix is actually younger than Claude by a couple of years (stated in the novel, and also implied in the manhwa, as Felix's mom became Claude's wet nurse some years after Felix was born). When novel Athy was about 17, there was a chapter about Felix worrying about his (and Claude's) age, and it's mentioned that he was nearing/around 40. Let's say that Claude is 2 years older than him (42-ish), that would mean he had Athanasia when he was around 25.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: Chapter 16: When the climax of the story approaches, Fifth book. Thank you @lithi for the pics ♡
This checks out with his physical age in the manhwa's flashbacks (though I guess that's subjective). I always had the impression that he killed Anastasius when he was around 18-21, immediately became emperor, met Diana shortly after, and they had a brief but intense romance, from which Athanasia was born. The fast-passed scenes in chapters 100-101's flashbacks seem to support this interpretation.
I have read some people say that Claude (and Diana? for some reason) was underage back then, but there's 0 canon information supporting that claim. Maybe they got it from a fanfic, since most fake spoilers come from them. Also, what would Obelia's standard for underage even be? It seems... strange to use our modern understanding of it when the time period is clearly the 18th century at most. But that discussion is neither here nor there.
Anyways, the manhwa is supposed to have two side stories that could provide more facts about this: The one about Anastasius and Claude's youth and the one about Claude and Diana's romance (or even the one about Felix's backstory). So perhaps we'll know his exact age in the future!
(Edited because I got Felix's age wrong lmao.)

6, 11, 27!
(pertinent to this ask meme)
#6 - Who's your favorite lord/protagonist?
I may or may not have recently declared a crusade in his name.
(Claude is up there as well also!)
  #11 - A character that deserved better?
speaking of which, Claude would have been a prime candidate here, but at least, Three Hopes finally gave him a route that feels like it's his own and not the church's sloppy... firsts. although that route did bring with it a new candidate for this question (they did so little with shahid,)
anyway, god, how does one even begin to choose? I could nominate like half of every female cast from the Kaga era games for one thing. get to the modern games, and you get countless characters who would've benefitted greatly from not being under pressure from being a viable target for the resident customizable protagonist's gaping S-supporting maw. the ones in the middle of the maelstrom are safe from that sort of sweeping problem, but that's not to say they don't have any characters they inidividually did dirty... (Lyn deserved more story relevance, Elincia deserved more time in the limelight in Radiant Dawn, Eirika deserves more respect from the fandom if that counts, and that's just going through protagonists)
anyway, a solid chunk of Awakening's second generation deserved to be in a better game -- perhaps even their own game -- so I guess that's also a big one
#27 - Any fanfics/fan content you’d recommend? (You can plug your own stuff it’s fine)
sneaky creature you are to ask that, considering how much of your stuff I'll rec in a half heartbeat,
anyway, I'm not nearly as avid of a reader as I should be, for being a writer, but here's some of the finest Fire Emblem fanfic that my terrible brain managed not to wander astray from:
Princess of Dawn and its sequels by @wyvern-dork are the ultimate gesture of dedication to a blorbo that I've ever had the privilege of witnessing, let's see, around 80 chapters of so far. y'know, out of the 193 total that are presently up. to describe it only as a novelization of the Akaneia Saga, starring Minerva and featuring Minerva/Palla, would be selling it short. I think the more accurate thing to call it, rather, is the Minerva bible.
not looking for a work that will beautifully gobble up your entire life like that, though? first off all, why aren't you? but second of all, you can still get your Minerva/Palla from the same tap in shorter form: in Blades of Champions, where the two of them are some of the tryhardingest fencers in the whole modern alternate universe
and to complete the hat-trick on recs for this particular friend's works, there's Fingers Through the Sand. in this fic, Luthier dies at war and Delthea's journey to completely mishandle her grief eventually takes her across the sea and to befriend another magical powerhouse with a heart full of grief -- Linde. it will hurt you perfectly while dazzling you with stuff about magic
but lest you think I'm letting you off without another Akaneia rec with lots of magic in it -- as if; here's simplicity by name, the delightful gift I was given for nagamas 2021. it's Merric/Arlen, albeit with some flexibility as to how romantic you read their interactions here exactly, also they're both magnificently trans of gender in there
and I'm not done with the magic yet, or with the ones I've managed to prompt out onto existance. after all, @dornishsphinx‘s May You Arrive at Fertile Phthia dotted that year's FE Rarepair Exchange for me with some of the most evocative (and, at least once, haunting) descriptions of magic I've ever seen. besides that, it also has an intriguing Erk/Nino story largely set after Binding Blade, ie, well after they've both disappeared. it is deliciously detailed, and even has a bunch of Homeric references if that happens to be something you're interested in
while we're at Elibe, @royaltyjunk's the pain in my heart cannot be shared (i really miss you) deserves a mention at the very least because Lyn opening a text convo with Hector with "order bitch" remains one of the most beautifully in-character things I've ever seen for her and it's the first line of the piece- besides that, it's also a modern AU story taking place in our here world, but one might say that it's still about how much Lyn misses the plains.
anyway, let's cap this off with a hat-trick of @queenlua recs, notwithstanding that this tag there is entirely redundant with the other notifications she's about to be getting for this post- anyway, the first one of them is Silent World, a three-chapterer in which Naesala attempts to ruin Micaiah and Sothe's relationship for shits and giggles. it's not quite SFW and it does in fact feature Micaiah/Sothe, but if you're fine with both of those things, then you may join in me suddenly finding Sothe a much more interesting character than you may have originally figured (plus, that Micaiah and Naesala are great characters should require no convincing, but they're still in peak form here, so, that's just Oops! All Interesting)
and here's another three-chapterer while I'm at it -- Where the River Meets the Sea. it's a Claude/Hilda story that doesn't skirt around the dodgy history between Hilda and Almyra -- the opposite, in fact, as that's one of the central themes. the other being that these two are both extremely nonconfrontational people and, sometimes, that's not a good thing. anyway, Lorenz writes a strongly worded letter in this, so, that's the real #1 reason why you should go read it right now
and I'm not done asking you to enjoy Lorenz content either; for that matter, neither am I done with the modern AUs. because summer is miles and miles away is the white whale that I will always be kindly, playfully, yet persistently prodding the author about picking back up someday. it's a Claude/Lorenz story where all the Garreg Mach people are Harvard graduates, Claude is the tech startup bro he was always meant to be, Lorenz hasn't matured quite as fast as he did in canon without a war to light a fire in his ass, and Hilda is great
plus, there's always my own work to recommend, but I take in pride in all the stuff I got to make these days, so, it's hard to pick and choose just a handful. you could always check out my ao3 page and read every last one of them. but to select a few regardless: The Winter Bird is my love letter to all of the Dawn Brigade's obscure underappreciated blorbos; Forests and People features Jamke, Edain, Dew, and probably some of the funniest lines I've ever managed to get into a piece; Building Trust, slightly longer-form than my usual fare, is an ongoing effort to make Catria/Clair happen -- you know, on my part, on their parts, and on Minerva and Palla's parts, with the time they have to spare while they're not flirting with each other -- and if you're in luck I might actually finish the fourth and final chapter this year; and then there's my most recent piece, MozghuzCon, where I drastically exceed my own expectations vis-a-vis story length for a spot of modern AU Bernadetta/Marianne where they're both very transgender, very neurodivergent, and very nerdy.

Les misérables (the film)
Les Misérables (Les Misérables) is a 2012 British and French musical drama film produced by Working Title Films and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film is based on the homonymous musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, which in turn is inspired by Les Misérables, an 1862 novel written by the Frenchman Victor Hugo. The film was directed by Tom Hooper, with a script by William Nicholson, Boublil, Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer. It has an ensemble cast headed by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne. It tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who becomes the mayor of a village in France. Valjean agrees to take care of Cosette, the illegitimate daughter of the dying Fantine, but due to his status as a fugitive, he must avoid capture by police inspector Javert. The story spans 17 years and is set against a backdrop of political unrest, with the film culminating in France's June 1832 Rebellion. Development based on the musical began in the late 1980s. Following the musical's 25th anniversary commemorative concert in October 2010, producer Cameron Mackintosh announced that he had resumed development on the film. Hooper and Nicholson were contacted in March 2011 and the main characters were cast in 2011. Filming began in March 2012, taking place in various locations, including Greenwich, London, Chatham, Winchester and Portsmouth in Hampshire, England, at the the same as in the French city of Gourdon. It premiered in London on December 5, 2012, and was released on December 25 of the same year in the United States, on December 26 in Australia, and on January 11, 2013 in the United Kingdom. The film has received mixed but generally positive reviews, with many critics praising the cast, especially the performance of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. The film received the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, the Golden Globe for Best Actor - Comedy or Musical for Jackman, and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Hathaway. She also received four BAFTA Awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Hathaway). It received eight nominations at the 85th Academy Awards, including Best Picture (the first musical nominated since 2002's winner Chicago) and Best Actor for Jackman, winning three: Best Sound Mixing, Best Makeup, and Best supporting actress for Hathaway. Les Misérables received generally favorable reviews. It has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes out of 227 reviews, with a 9/10 rating under the consensus: 'Impeccably staged but occasionally bombastic, Les Misérables succeeds largely thanks to the virtuoso performances of its filmmaker distinguished cast. On Metacritic, the film earned an average score of 63 out of 100 based on 41 reviews, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'. Due to the numerous deleted scenes in the film, various pages have been created, including: https://lesmisextendedversion.tumblr.com/ requesting signatures so that the directors decide to edit the full version of the film. Numerous fans of the film from around the world have joined this initiative, with the aim of obtaining a favorable response from managers.
Les Misérables (the Musical)
Les Misérables or Les Misérables is a fully sung musical based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean -Marc Natel. The show premiered in 1980 in Paris and five years later made the leap to London, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and adapted into English by Herbert Kretzmer. His Tony-winning score includes such well-known songs as 'I Dreamed a Dream', 'On My Own', 'One Day More', 'Bring Him Home' or 'Do You Hear the People Sing?'. Set in early 19th century France, the musical tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict of extraordinary strength who seeks redemption after serving nineteen years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Unable to get an honest job because of his past, Valjean finds his way thanks to the compassion of a kind bishop, who inspires him to break his probation and start a new life under a false identity, while suffering the relentless persecution of the inspector. Javert through the years. Along the way, Valjean and a series of characters will find themselves involved in the middle of a revolution, in which a group of young students fight for their ideals in the streets of Paris. Initially conceived as a concept album in French, the first staging of Les Miserables debuted in September 1980 at the Palais des Sports in Paris, where it ran until December of that same year. In 1983, six months after Cats premiered on Broadway, producer Cameron Mackintosh received a copy of the French concept album from Hungarian director Peter Farago. Farago was impressed by the play and asked Mackintosh to produce an English version of the show. Initially reluctant, Mackintosh eventually agreed and together with the Royal Shakespeare Company assembled a creative team to adapt the musical for British audiences. After two years of work, the English-language version of Les Misérables premiered on October 8, 1985, at the Barbican Center in London, then the headquarters of the Royal Shakespeare Company. The enormous success of the musical in the West End led to its arrival on Broadway. The emblem of the musical is a portrait of the girl Cosette sweeping the Thénardiers' inn (scene that takes place during the song 'Castle on a Cloud') with the flag of France superimposed. The image is based on an illustration by Émile Bayard that appeared in the first French editions of the original novel. So, this was my first attempt at the Goddess Tower scene in chapter 9 of “A Catalyst of Brides.” It’s basically just me trying to write Claude’s canon S-Support into the text of my story, using Byleth’s POV.
In the end, I didn’t think it felt quite right and I wrote a different version, but I thought what the hell, might as well share this for anyone that might be curious.
- - -
Peace.
That word kept bouncing around Byleth’s brain as she climbed the steps of the Goddess Tower. Claude had asked her to meet him here, so she’d wrapped up an interminable afternoon of meetings in order to join him. So far, peace was turning into an administrative nightmare.
It was still better than the alternative. She only wished Jeralt had lived long enough to see it. Her fingers curled around the little pouch that he’d bequeathed to her, the one that contained her mother’s ring.
She’d brought it with her with every intention of asking Claude to stay with her, to choose her instead of any of those other women Lorenz had offered up for his consideration. Yet now that the opportunity to offer it to him was drawing so near, she found her courage was flagging. She was nervous, something she had almost never experienced before now.
She didn’t know what she’d do if he refused.
He turned as she came into the room, flashing her a smile that was almost relieved, like he was glad she’d actually come. She smiled back, though his reaction bemused her a little. When hadn’t she come when he’d called? She couldn’t imagine a world where, if he needed her or even just wanted her, she wouldn’t find a way to be at his side.
His voice was softer than normal, warmer, as he greeted her. Perhaps the opening discussion of Fódlan’s new politics should have clued her in to the fact that he was nervous as well, but she had been so unsure of where to start that she went along with it. Somehow she’d find a way to ask him…to give him the…
The word coronation snapped her attention back to what he was saying—he’d explained to her earlier that he intended to crown her, and somehow coaxed her into agreeing. But that had felt a long way away…now she was reminded that she would be wearing Fódlan’s crown in a few days, and a sense of vertigo swept through her again at the thought. He seemed to sense her nervousness, or maybe he read the reflexive stab of fear in her eyes, and his face fell in deep regret.
“I’m sorry I won’t be by your side at such an important event, but I’m certain you’ll do great.”
Won’t be by my…? “You won’t be there?” It came out in a breathless rush of words, a panicked response that she never would have had a few months ago, but he’d cracked her heart open and now she couldn’t seem to help these emotional outbursts. Him not being with her, not guiding her through the next crucial steps, emptied her chest and left her feeling as though her rib cage was going to collapse. Everything other part of her body had gone cold.
He didn’t look away, at least, as he explained himself, explained how the next steps of his path took him away from Fódlan. Byleth could hear the ache behind his words, but he seemed so resigned. Seemed not to know, or maybe not to care, that something was cracking inside of her with every word.
No, if he knew he was hurting her, he’d care. And he did know, to some extent, that he was causing her pain; that was why his words were so carefully chosen, so obviously planned in advance. He was trying to be as gentle and patient as he could.
“I can’t be a ruler,” she said. “I know I agreed when you asked me, but I had assumed that…that we…” She hadn’t dreamed he’d meant to turn around and leave her alone before he’d even seen the crown put on her head. The cracking in her chest turned to shattering. Did people really feel this way? Did they feel this strongly? How did they survive it? She felt like she’d taken some near-fatal blow.
“You’re the successor Rhea appointed, aren’t you?” he reminded her. He probably meant to tease her a little, but it fell flat this time. “And now you’re also the hero that saved Fódlan.”
Not alone, I didn’t.
“All those weak people who have nothing to cling to but their goddess…They’ll rely on you just like they used to rely on Rhea. You’ll be a leader all who are struggling to survive in war-torn lands can look up to. And I…” He choked off for just half a second, and that one tiny hitch told her how important this was to him. “I want a ruler who can lay down a new set of values for the people. Values that don’t exclude anyone for being different.”
There was a pause then, and Byleth’s fingers clenched around the ring she’d brought for him in such a foolish, selfish outburst of hope. Of course she couldn’t ask him to marry her, or to choose her in any way other than for this. This—changing Fódlan at its core, opening the heart of the nation to all its people and even beyond, to distant lands—it was far more important than her desire to be at his side. How could her need even begin to compare with that, even as vital to her future as it felt?
“I know it’s a lot to ask,” he told her, still using that tone of careful regret. “But you’re the only one that can do it.”
Her throat seemed to have swollen. She didn’t think she could squeeze any words past the lump, so she only nodded. Claude’s belief in her would have to be enough. It would have to carry her through as she continued to do her part to make their dreams come true.
It took more courage than she’d ever needed on a battlefield to look up into his face again. There was something else in his expression now; the resignation and regret that had filled his eyes was now being replaced by other emotions. Concern and…she thought it was trepidation, as though there was some other huge burden he needed her to bear. One he wasn’t sure she’d accept.
“I have something else I need to ask. Please…” There was true desperation in his voice now. “I hope you’ll accept this.”
Byleth been so busy studying his face, afraid that his precariously hopeful look was going to herald a request she couldn’t bear to fulfill, that she had missed the way his gloved fingers had fumbled nervously for a pocket. Missed that they had drawn out something small and glittering. Her eyes dropped to his offering now, and shock had her suck in a gasp of air.
The ring was beautiful; the central stone almost the same green as his eyes and the scrollwork intricate and perfect.
His next words, spoken in the silence she couldn’t find the words to break, were full of chagrin.
“When I first saw you wield the Sword of the Creator, I wanted to use your power to my advantage. I wanted to use you to make my dream of a new world come true. But before long, I realized what I actually wanted was to see that new world…with you by my side. I still feel that way, you know. I always will. That’s why I have to leave.”
She wished he would touch her, even just to take her hands, so she could feel as though this was real and not a dream, that he wasn’t offering her a crown instead of his heart…that he meant to give her both, to give her everything. Her despair had nearly overwhelmed her just seconds ago; could she really be soaring so high now?
Her silence was starting to concern him, she could see the way hope was just starting to crumble in his eyes, but she still hadn’t managed to find her voice, so he continued.
“But nothing will stop me from coming back.” The certainty of it, the determination behind those words, started to revive her a bit. “There’s no way I’m gonna let you go. You know that, don’t you?”
It was the sudden, raw vulnerability in that question that broke her. A hoarse little noise escaped her locked throat, and her arms reached for him even as she nodded.
Claude caught her, pulled her into his arms so quickly that she realized he must have been resisting the urge to hold her this entire time. His hand came up to tangle into her hair as he pressed her close, and her fingers buried themselves in the front of his silk tunic. He murmured a thank you into her hair, and Byleth wasn’t sure if it was to her or the universe in general. It didn’t matter. He was all that mattered.
“I’ll be back before you know it,” he promised, and she could hear the smile in his voice. He nuzzled his face against hers and she buried herself deeper into him, feeling a swooping giddiness take over her stomach. She was really going to have to learn how to control these emotions. They felt too big for her body. “We’ll only be apart for a short while.”
He pulled back a little, looking down into her eyes. “And now…I’m off to cross Fódlan’s Throat.”
She nodded, reaching up to touch the tears that had spilled onto her cheeks. He caught her hands in his, then wiped those tears away himself, his thumbs sweeping gently over her skin. His fingers moved to cup her face.
“I love you. With everything I am. And the next time we see each other…it will be at the dawn of a whole new world. A peaceful, happy world.”
“I love you,” she whispered back. She reached for the small pouch, then slid it into his hands with shaking fingers. “I came here to…you got there first, but I…”
He smiled at the way she fumbled for words while he opened the pouch. Then her mother’s ring tumbled out into his waiting palm, and it was his turn to suck in a sharp breath.
“Really?” he asked, his eyes on her, wide and vulnerable. It had obviously taken him great courage to tell her that he’d chosen her…but the idea that she might have already chosen him, that she was going to propose to him of her own volition, regardless of what he could or couldn’t offer her…his throat bobbed as he stared at the intricate band in his palm. Had anyone ever truly chosen him— not what he could do for them or what power he might one day wield, but just him—before in his whole life?
She pulled his mouth down to hers, rising on her toes to kiss him properly, and his arms slid back around her and anchored her to him.
“I love you,” she said again when they broke apart for air, and he was the one that couldn’t speak this time. Instead, he linked both their hands and touched his forehead to hers, as though he was savoring this moment, storing it away in his heart with every detail, so he’d never forget it. She found herself doing the same.
“When I get back, as soon as I get back…I hope you don’t mind if we have the ceremony right away. I don’t want to wait any longer to make you my wife.”
“Yes,” she agreed. “As soon as we can.”
Then, with her tucked back against his warm, strong chest and his arms wrapped tight around her waist, they watched the stars come out one by one.

TOP 10 MANHWAs
if anything good came out of 2020, it’s my discovery of manhwas.
well, it’s not like i’ve never read a single manhwa in the past 15+ years but tbh, the ratio of manhwa:manga i consume on a weekly basis has jumped exponentially this year. previously it was like 1:99 and now it’s like 90:10 LMAO.
so, just to remind myself that the world is still full of good things, i had to make this list. which i will probably edit in the future, if i can be bothered to. :)
anyhow, this list was not made in any particular order, just whichever came into mind. it’s loooong so be prepared! (I’ve read way more titles than mentioned but just included the ones worth checking out)
for whoever stumbles across this list, i hope some of these resonate with you and i hope they make you as happy as they made me.

1. Ebony
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/41838/ebony
Bahahah omg he looks evil there! But our dearest archduke is hardly that aww. Soz, I just ripped off the covers of the manhwa cos I can’t find a panel I liked more than another. I mean, this manhwa is a GEM. I can’t even begin to describe this because everything about it blew me away. This is not something you read when you are craving for fluff, or just wanna have something brainless after a hard day at work or if you just wanna have some eye candy lol. This is something you pick up on a weekend, when you have time, because you need those hours to digest, appreciate, clutch your chest, tear a little because you find yourself falling in love with these characters. It doesn’t have any of that cliche isekai, romance, revenge themes going on. It has a solid plot, backed by incredible characters, beautifully woven by the authors and artist with incredible pacing that keeps you on your toes and keeps you looking forward to the next chapter. Maybe I would have been happier if I found it after it was completed lol. HAVE I CONVINCED YOU ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU WANNA READ IT?! like, idk, just go. JUST GO READ IT GDI.
p.s. it says there romance but naaaaaaah, dont go in with that expectation. :) this story is so much more than that.
2. Bring the love
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/44472/bring-the-love
This...this!!! THIS MANHWA NEEDS MORE LOVE. If you need a lot of fluff, a little, ok maybe quite a bit of sadness and tragedy, sweet sweet romance, cutie pies, please, look no further!!! Again, pacing, character development are so important to me and this manhwa aces it. I love the 2 MCs very much. And the side characters too. :)
3.  A Stepmother's Märchen
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/39474/a-stepmother-s-m-rchen
When I first read this, i fucking cried. like please don’t ask me why. it’s not like its an absolute tragedy but I was just rooting for the MC so much and I really want for everything to go her way. That’s how much I adore this MC!!! I LOVE HER. I LOVE HER MORE THAN YOU DO NORA! HAHAHHA. okay soz. I need to keep this spoiler-free.
Anyhoo, there is nothing typical about this time travel plot. Sure, she goes back to try to undo the stuff that went wrong but phew, she certainly changed things so much everything that comes her way have made it so her previous experiences can hardly help aaaaaaand that’s what makes it fun! I sometimes wish the pacing could be a little more consistent, and there could be more characters I could love a little more wholeheartedly (so i wont have to be in so much despair when i read this sometimes lol) but omg the art, isn’t it pretty?! I’ve re-read this soooooo many times but the art blows me away all the time. And have I already mentioned how much I love her?! I LOVE YOU SHULI! AND I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY!
4.  Lady Baby
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/34691/lady-baby
I literally LOL-ed when I saw this cover. WHO THE HELL ARE THEY. WHAT LADY BABY?! ehehehe. okay anyway, uhm, this is already incredibly popular. im not sure if i need to elaborate but yes, it’s adorbs!!! i dont think i like the MC as much as i love her family lol. and everyone else who adores her. im looking forward to when they get older. :) actually not really. please stay cute for as long as yall can! but yeah, i do wish the plot can move a lil faster. i want to see more character development in the other kids too COME ON!
5.  Death Is the Only Ending for the Villainess
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/47754/death-is-the-only-ending-for-the-villainess
am i allowed to reveal how shallow i am rn? like the previous choices were all like ‘wow-deep-plot’, ‘wow-character-development’ and this one i just included cos of AESTHETICS ALONE?! the novel covers are breathtaking!!! the manhwa art is amazing as well. and the harem is great! LOL. as for plot... uhm... it’s alright. it’s pretty engaging and i quite like the MC, she’s smart and independent and i love how she views them all antagonistically at all times HAHAHHA. her past is kinda... weird though and i do wish they’d stop referencing it. cos... girl why do you wanna go back to reality!!! stay here! it’s way more exciting!
i love the whole isekai/reincarnate/transmigration theme and this is honestly one of the better, not-so-cliche or cheesy ones HA.
6.  Beware of the Villainess!
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/47286/beware-of-the-villainess
do you already see the whole villainess theme?! am i suppose to start feeling embarrassed about my choices?! NO! cos this one is AWESOME!
again, another wildly popular title. for good reasons. it’s hilarious, our MC is as real and candid as it gets and LOOK AT THAT BLUE HAIRED BEAUTY. DO YOU SEE HIM?! IMPLANT HIM INTO YOUR MEMORY NOW!
it’s highly entertaining and breaks all isekai-reincarnation-villainess plot stereotypes. definitely one of the titles i look forward to every week.
7.  Who Made Me a Princess
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/32506/who-made-me-a-princess
what? why did i choose this?
BECAUSE OF CLAUDE OF COURSE. ahahaha. okay aside from the amaaaaaaazing art and the beautiful people, the plot is not too bad. a little extreme at times but it’s interesting enough to keep me going. it’s currently on hiatus though and i was highly annoyed by how the first season ended. (YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED? NOTHING.)
i hope the plot can move faster in the next season! and that our dearest MC athanasia can you know, finally be a little more useful... like omg just tell lucas already!!! and tbh girl, no matter which guy you choose, i approve. :D
8.  The Flower That Was Bloomed by a Cloud
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/37648/the-flower-that-was-bloomed-by-a-cloud
i featured this before, mostly out of frustration HAHAHA. do you see why i chose this cover?! yeah, i support this (unpopular) pairing okay! the other one is doomed!!! no matter what the author is trying to do now!! I DONT SUPPORT IT!!! lol.
anyway, i had to feature this cos the art is unique! and the story is great. :) and i looooooove listening to the ost while i read it. it starts out kinda slow but as the pace picks up, you won’t be able to stop. and you find yourself conflicted at various points. it did win an award for a reason.
no matter what, i still think dowun is best for her okay. it’s dowun or nothing. he’s devoted to her, we all know that! he just needs to ditch that annoying female guard!!! ok yknw what, maybe nothing is better. :/ *cries*
9.  Solo Leveling
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/31477/solo-leveling
why do i even bother? this manhwa is popular enough.
the art is great. the MC is great. i use him and his gang as my wallpaper.
im just not sure i like how this season’s plot is progressing. :/ but i guess it brings us nearer to solving the mystery in the first leg of the manhwa. i just enjoyed the whole part of him leveling up and now that he isn’t really leveling up anymore... idk. am i hoping for more plot shit like bleach (oh wow now u quincy?)... idk man. anywho, no regrets starting on this series and marathon-ing it to death.
cross fingers the plot picks up and doesnt get too complicated for its own good.
10.  The Reason Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion
Tumblr media
https://mangadex.org/title/31606/the-reason-why-raeliana-ended-up-at-the-duke-s-mansion
okay, tbh, by the time i reached 10, i still have like 15 other series i was considering LMAO. i even considered lengthening this top 10 to top 15. but that would just be more of me and my nonsense. so... why did i choose this?
COS I LOVE THE 2 MCs!!! they’re adorable. the plot is again, kinda far-fetched at times (i literally laugh my head off at some parts) but it’s isekai-reincarnation okay! anything is possible in whatever magical crap country you end up in! lol. and i like how straightforward it is... in the sense there’s no 2nd lead. like okay i mean they are there but we all know they have no chance. oops. sorry!
and cos i can’t give up on the other titles i have, imma just list them down, without pictures... cos im tired. HA.
11. Doctor Elise
https://mangadex.org/title/29474/doctor-elise
Kudos to the huge improvement in art style lmao. The good... lovable MCs, engaging plot. The bad... sometimes lengthy, incredulous medical moments (i work in the medical field so i... idk. sometimes this borders on iryu LMAO and i need to remind myself this is romance) otherwise, this is a highly highly entertaining read.
12.  Seduce the Villain's Father
https://mangadex.org/title/46775/seduce-the-villain-s-father
This is another of my ‘father-love’ whims. MC is adorable and ML is handsome. enough said.
13.  The Villainess Lives Twice
https://mangadex.org/title/49644/the-villainess-lives-twice
This is like a lesser version of Ebony and Bring the Love combined HAHAHA. The plot and premise is great and it’s awesome to marathon! I don’t find myself loving the MC as much as I should but the ML is a darling! I just find her a little toooooooo gloomy. Like come on girl, be more spunky!
14.  The Stereotypical Life of a Reincarnated Lady
https://mangadex.org/title/46790/the-stereotypical-life-of-a-reincarnated-lady
I dont know why I like this so much HAHAHAHA. It hardly has a plot. I just find the MC and ML amusing i guess lol.
15.  I'm Stanning the Prince
https://mangadex.org/title/45586/i-m-stanning-the-prince
Sometimes I wonder if I should be ranking this higher but I kinda feel this manhwa is trying to achieve too much with an underpowered MC. I love her... but I just don’t like how she’s just a pawn of everyone else and I dont know how she can change this situation of hers. It’s cute though. the MC and ML.  and the ML reminds me so much of american/jap Mackenyu.
16.  The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass
I HAD TO. the art is so pretty! but girl, dont use the hour glass so much! you look a little too old! i would appreciate it if MC stops basing too much of her moves on the “past” tho like idk you are gonna sound unoriginal soooooon like develop your own thoughts soon okay? <3
17. Inso's Law
ANOTHER ONE. omg. im a lil on the fence regarding this but i like MC too much. and her harem LOL. i dont see where the plot is going either but i just hope for a happy end... ):
18.  Why Are You Doing This, Duke?
HAHAHA. this is sooooo sooooooo cute, i would have ranked it top 15 if it wasnt licensed by tapas tho cos they are a joke. WHY NOT TAPPY GDI.
19.  Miss Not-So Sidekick
Uh-oh. Is this a top-20 list now? anyway, the MC for this series is GOLD. im not liking where it’s currently heading tho thus the lower ranking.
20.  IRIS - Lady with a Smartphone
omg IVE NEGLECTED THIS FOR TOO LONG. lemme go buy more chapters hahahaha. it’s a tad too lengthy... otherwise i like the MC and yummy ML!
still not enough?
Special Mentions - Okay, these will be unranked cos I don’t think these are that good but probably still worth a read.
I've Become the Villainous Empress of a Novel - this is new, im looking forward to how it progresses wheeeee.
Lady to Queen - It’s a ruthless manhwa. There was a point i started reading all sorts of sadistic content (i was running out of content i swear) and this was one of the better ones. I appreciate the MC very much. the plot now is a little weird and im a bit wary of the MC’s sister... hopefully the ML can be more useful. he’s pitiful though. but dude come on, dont rely on the wrong gal.
Goodbye, In-law - I’m not sure if i like the current progress buuuuuuut MC and ML are cute so who cares.
The Duchess' 50 Tea Recipes - plot is still engaging. MC and ML are cute. i dont know where the plot is heading towards though.
A Falling Cohabitation - this is interesting and fun but a lil lengthy.
Light and Shadow - the sequel is out!!! i highly enjoyed this entire series!!! i would have probably ranked it a lil higher if i did this post earlier but too many series have overtaken this in my heart lol.
This Girl Is a Little Wild - is the hiatus ending yet? i would add it back to top 20 if it came back LOL. it’s highly entertaining tho. ML is adorable.
The Duchess With an Empty Soul  - pretty nice. MC and ML are a little boring. i think it can end soon. LMAO.
A Capable Maid - it’s amusing how she gets her powers for all sorts of situations lol. the prince is creepy tbh. and im secretly rooting for the other king hehe.
Beware of the Brothers! - it’s cute and heart-wrenching at the same time! not too sure im digging the latest plot development but okay... i’ll take it. they’re all cuties.
Living as the Tyrant's Older Sister - hehehe. it’s cute. duke is kinda silly but the latest chapter made me squeal!!!
The Evil Lady's Hero  - idk where the plot is going but MC and ML are adorable!!!
The Dragon Next Door - HAHAHA. it’s hilarious.
The Youngest Princess - she’s growing uppppp noooooooooooo
Virtues of the Villainess - ginger is hilarious. i dont see where the plot is going tho... and cant say i like the ML yet. i dont even get to see him much, hello?!
The Justice of Villainous Woman - pretty wholesome... i like the MC! (the ML is fine. no one else to contend with so...) can u end already?! lol.
Amina of the Lamp - hey, what happened to this? it’s pretty inconsistent but i do like the MC and ML... and the art...
The Villain's Savior - this is some sadistic shit. i reserve it for when i feel sadistic. i pretty much wanna see MC happy but idk if she’s making the right choices. :/
I Don't Want to Be Empress! - HAHAHAHA uhm it’s getting interesting. i just want ML to step up more...
La dolce vita di Adelaide - I FINISHED THIS! and it’s wholesome, feel-good and cute. some parts felt a lil extra but ah whatever.
The Black Haired Princess - plot. move. faster!!! otherwise the MC and ML are pretty cute.
The Abandoned Empress - im a lil on the fence but i know how popular this series is. it started out HORRIBLE. i hated the ML so much. and then i found the green hair boy creepy. like MC, you need better taste in boys. it’s certainly getting more interesting now though. so please, continue to make my money’s worth!!!
Lucia - i. am. not. guilty. of. anything. *smut warning* anyway go read the novel. it’s better. hehehe.
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim - i do not need to elaborate any further.
Past loves
I created this section just to remind myself, that what i could like one day, i could hate the next LOL.
The Monster Duchess and Contract Princess - I know this is wildly popular. but i lost interest in it once she grew up. i dont think she’s particularly lovable. soz.
Survive as the Hero's Wife - another popular choice. I find the plot kinda boring now. MC and ML are cute though.
Sincerely: I Became a Duke's Maid - another popular one. again, boring plot. like cant it end yet? oh you mean we need to wait for the real female lead to show up? dont need luh.
I Am a Child of This House - wow. the plot is shit now. and i do not support the MC and her guard. soz. she’s OVERPOWERED tbh.
This Is an Obvious Fraudulent Marriage - idk what happened but my enthusiasm for this died.
Charlotte and Her 5 Disciples - i don’t get it. i dont get their obsession for her.

🤝 + Fire emblem three houses s/i >:)
(if you need a description of my s/i, they are a reserved and quiet person but once you get to know them, they're a pretty sweet and caring person. They work in the monastery as a librarian assistant and seem to have a dislike for nobles.) [Dorky-self-shipper]
Hello, my friend!!! It’s always nice to see you 🥰!
I feel like your s/i and mine would get along really well! Your s/i seems really sweet! Ash is pretty kind and friendly, and tries to reach out to people when she’s in a good mood. She makes a lot of jokes (not to toot my own horn or anything, but she’s pretty funny-), but she is very emotional sometimes LOL.
However, she can be pretty brutal towards people she thinks aren’t that great (her supports with Gilbert are absolutely brutal), a lot of which are nobles, so she totally gets them there. Which is honestly kind of funny, considering who Felix is and how one of her first and closest friends at the academy is Sylvain.. It’s interesting.
She doesn’t have a noble background. Her parents are merchants currently operating in Faerghus (although she also has relatives in the Alliance, and her older sister is also a previous graduate of the Academy who eventually serves as one of Claude’s generals) and her parents are actually from Almyra. So things can be a bit… yeah. A lot of the Blue Lions are nobles and “look” like they’re from Fodlan, so, once again, she is more than happy to speak about how she’s had quite a few negative experiences at the monastery, a lot of which are due to nobles. She also isn’t a huge fan of how the government works, and she isn’t really one to hold back her thoughts much? She’ll vocalize them without much hesitation.
A big part of her character is that she really loves books and reading, so she spends a lot of time around the library as well! She reads almost anything, so you can see her chilling in the library when she’s not in class or at choir practice or petting the cats or sparring (Felix insisted LOL.) During the war phase of the game, she assists the professor with strategies and such and can be quite helpful during war councils. She can be a bit of a nerd sometimes. I also like to think that sometimes she helps with putting books away and such, so I think that could set up a lot of opportunities to interact. She tries to be as knowledgeable as she can, always analyzing things and reading. A lot of that reading is just a bunch of novels but.
And, maybe, just maayyybeeeee, she sometimes sneaks into the shadow library in abyss? hmmmmm 👀? It takes some convincing to actually go there, because not only does she get afraid horribly easily, but she also likes sticking to the rules and staying out of trouble. Her biggest fear is Seteth finding her sneaking out of her dorms at night. And bugs. However, after a while… She wouldn’t be against bringing some of her friends with her…. 👀? Hmmmmmm 👀
Also! About how she works as a unit!! Part of her love of books stems from the fact that she’s a mage. She falls under the quirky mage archetype that fe games have. Funny enough, I actually share a birthday with Ricken from Awakening??? Anyways, she’s good as a lot of different classes, but with proficiencies in sword (Felix really helped hone her skills + swords are just really cool) and reason + faith, I really like her as a Trickster. Also, fingerguns. Her HP isn’t always the best, so dodging like crazy is awesome. Also, fingerguns. Dark Flier, Gremory and Dancer are all pretty fun picks too.
Overall, I think that they would get along well and that would definitely reflect in their conversations. Ash would be pretty kind to them and allow herself to relax a bit, talking about how she really feels about everything going on around them. She would love to be close friends and hang out whenever she’s in the library! Which is admittedly very very often but.
Ash’s tendency to come off as very extroverted and “wahoo!!” (although that really isn’t always the case with her) would be pretty fun because you mentioned that your s/i can start off as rather reserved and quiet. I think they would have a lot to discuss about, with topics being both lighthearted and more serious when it comes down to the people in charge and such. And! Since they’re both really caring, it would be pretty wholesome too. Overall, Ash really likes them.

Finding an Agent For My First Novel, By Mark Pumphrey
Tumblr media
I. My first thought about finding an agent to help sell my book to a publisher is that it is wise to start with agents and editors I already know, either well or as a passing acquaintance. The stronger the tie to the people at the agency, the better for a new writer. If the agent is also a book editor and/or publisher, even better!
In my case, I would start with Lee & Bobby Byrd, the founders of the family-owned a operated Cinco Puntos Press in my home town of El Paso, Texas. The Byrds are very active as both vendors and supporters of libraries, and I am a retired library director with forty years of experience as a professional librarian. Cinco Puntos Press is the home of writer Benjamin Alire Saenz, who won the Pen Faulkner Award for his book “It All Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club. The book was published by Cinco Puntos Press. I am a member of the Southwest Book Awards Committee, and I read and recommended another Cinco Puntos Press book for an award two years ago, “Folly Cove: A Smuggler’s True Tale of the Pot Rebellion,” by Kermit Schweidel. I am also a personal friend of an author who has been published by Cinco Puntos Press: Sergio Troncoso. I have lots of people at this press that would support effort to get published.
Next I would contact Frances Goldin Literary Agency in New York City. Though Ms. Goldin has passed away, her staff continue at the same high quality of representation of authors as was the case when Ms. Goldin ran the agency. I had one correspondence with Ms. Goldin years ago when I was looking for the address of an old acquaintance, the writer Barbara Kingsolver. Though we are not close friends or even friends, Ms. Kingsolver was kind enough to correspond with me a few times years ago, on the basis that we were born in the same tiny Kentucky town and I had briefly known her family as a small child before my family moved to another town in Kentucky. Ms. Goldin made it possible for me to get back in touch with Barbara, who I had not seen since she signed our (my husband Jean-Claude and I) copies of La Cuna--even bringing us to the front of the line for a brief chat before signing our books. I have a kinship to Barbara Kingsolver simply because we breathed same air and had the same influential grade school teachers in Carlisle for a brief time. I think my writing style would resonate with the Francis Goldin Literary Agency agents because my style and my themes are similar to those of Ms. Kingsolver.
Finally, I would contact Jotham Burrello at Elephant Rock Books in Connecticut. When I was the Director of Libraries for the City of El Paso, I served as a judge for this small publishing house’s annual Young Adult fiction award, the Helen Sheehan YA Book Prize in the year this honor was bestowed on Lucia Distefano”s book “Borrowed,” a book that went on to receive starred reviews and other recognition. On Elephant Rock Books website, I am quoted in the publicity for “Borrowed,” and I would definitely remind Mr. Burrello of that, and of my participation in the Sheehan Award judging.
2. I think it is important for new writers like myself to think realistically about which agents and publishing houses to try to gain an invitation to pitch my novel to. It is unrealistic for me to try to pitch to a major publishing house such as Random House or HarperCollins. A good agent will know that. The larger publishing houses do not even consider a book unless the author already has a large following of readers and a track record of writing books that sell well. All three of the agencies I listed above are small for a good reason. I think the agent I choose or who agrees to take me on as a client will also need to be aware that I am starting very late in the writing profession. As a retired 67-year-old who at the age where one begin to wonder how many years one has left on this planet, the agent will need to set realistic goals with me for what I can actually accomplish in the compressed amount of time I have left. My classmates are mostly 20-somethings, so it is realistic for them to prepare themselves to work in a Hollywood television series writers room. But I really don’t believe that is something that is in the realm of possibility for me, and my agent would need to look at it in the same way I do. This would also apply to the process of applying for temporary writing jobs in the high-powered world of Hollywood--it would be an impossible goal for a 67-year old with limited experience to develop applications for jobs for which I am unlikely to be a serious candidate due to my age.
3. I think I need to find an agent who will allow me to express my doubts about my writing. An ideal agent will help me become a good actor, pitching the hell out of a book I wrote that I know in my heart is not my best work. I need to be able to express all of my worries about whether I am good enough without being stifled by my agent or forced by my agent to be an unreal version of myself when I meet the public in an effort to generate interest in my book. Even though I feel I need a sensitive agent who understands my need to express how I really feel, I also need for that agent to push me a little, so that I will not avoid and actually stay on track with doing all the things that are required of a writer on the business side of the equation. My agent should not allow my shy nature to stop me from performing well as a promoter of my book. If I become shy at a book launch or reading, the agent will need to be there to remind me to engage more with the people in the room, and not leave me to my usual pattern of avoiding whatever is unpleasant or uncomfortable or that makes me fearful.

Okay so Fire Emblem anon here!! Here's a Kinda Super Long Bc I Got Carried Away description of a few Fire Emblem games, plus some characters that seem like they hit tropes you like!
The good news is that there's not a super huge overarching timeline, there's several smaller timelines that are seperate from one another except for the crossover games. I'm gonna go with describing the newer ones that you're most likely to be able to get your hands on and play; a lot of people complain that they lean into some anime-tropey stuff and are too easy, but tbh, that's a perk just as often as it isn't. Basically, it's Game of Thrones, but rated T and with more cute girls and old men who are friendly instead of creepy.
Tbh, it's a turn-based strategy game with visual novel elements for characterization, if strategy games aren't your thing and you're just interested in the characters, watching the support conversations on Youtube might be more your thing. All the characterization, none of the resetting the same goshdang level thirty times. Anyways, description of the games in passing, including a brief description of the plot concept, pros and cons, trigger warnings, and some characters you might be interested in if you're just looking up characters.
*line break for legibility*
Awakening: for the 3DS. Follows Robin, an amnesiac mage, after they're found in a field by a band of knights called the Shepherds. Involves the undead, a twink in a mask, timey-wimey shenangians, and the usual cast of oddballs you'd expect from a Fire Emblem game.
Pros of Awakening: customizable player character, intro of Casual mode (turns off permadeath) and the Pair Up system, which lets you put characters together for shipping reasons strategy and stat boosts. Also doubles as a shipping simulator, since you can pair off characters and meet their later in the game due to said timey-wimey shenangians.
Cons of Awakening: there are some....very concerning combos of names/skin tones/plot relevance for certain characters, so go in with a warning about implicit racism. Also if you like strategy games, this game is relatively easy to break and make "too easy," but tbh that's what Lunatic Mode (the Ultra Unfair Hard Mode) is for.
Trigger warnings across the main plot: underhanded politics, attempted assassinations, martyrdom, an optional character is implied to stalk Robin but idk how to tag that, identity crises, conflicts within a family, character who isn't you looks like you, backstory child abuse, an optional character is a bad portrayal of DID if you squint?
*line break for legibility*
Fates: is actually a group name for two games set in the same universe, and a DLC bonus story: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations. All for the 3DS. All three games star Corrin, a pacifist raised in seclusion in the kingdom of Nohr. Each game reflects a different path Corrin can take in navigating the war between the nations of Nohr and Hoshido: Birthright has them stand with Hoshido, Conquest with Nohr, and Revelations has them strike out (nearly) alone. Each path has a completely different storyline, cast of characters, and difficulty curve.
Pros of Fates: honestly, the characters here cater the most to the avid pro-shipper and multi-shipper. I just love this cast. Both Nohr and Hoshido have four members of the royal family you can play and get to know, each of those royal family members has two retainers who are various levels of dedicated and/or unhinged, and the cast just widens and widens. Also a character customization and shipping simulator point for the same reasons Awakening gets it. Also, canon fujoshi rights (there's a character with a skill called Daydream, which boosts her stats when two male characters are paired up near her. one of us, one of us). Also the first game with canon queer characters: both Rhajat and Niles are bi.
Cons of Fates: unfortunately, the writing is kinda rushed or badly translated in some places. Also *shakes IntSys* my lore! Give me more lore! Also, iirc, you could get both physical games in a bundle for a discount when they came out, but not anymore, so it's sorta like Pokemon with version exclusives. Which is less fun, since you can't directly trade characters. Also the fandom for this game is RIFE with discourse, which is kinda sad bc I just wanna talk my ships with ppl sjxhdjdn
Trigger warnings for Fates: child abuse might as well be Nohr's middle name, in-universe racism (since Hoshido is p obviously Japan-inspired, and a lot of Nohrians are rancid to Hoshidans), kidnapping, on-screen murder, lots of fighting your loved ones (on both main routes, you gotta fight the playable characters from the other side AAA), su-c-de, death of sibling(s) in certain routes, demonic-like possession, there's like six characters people can read as bad mental illness rep, Niles especially is discourse bait for being a kinky (yes that's canon) bi man of color but also he's awesome so die mad antis
*break for space*
Shadows of Valentia: for the 3DS. A remake of Gaiden, the second game in the series. Follows Alm, a farm boy from a small village in Zofia, and Celica, his childhood best friend. Zofia and the nation to its north, Rigel, are two nations ruled by the dragon gods Mila and Duma, respectively. Normally, they're in equilibrium, but Rigel is invading and Mila is missing, prompting Alm and Celica to independently investigate the problem.
Pros of SoV: the most like the old-school Fire Emblem games, but it also has the permadeath-off mode. also the first to be fully voice acted! The art style is gorgeous, and the plot was polished up from the old game--two characters names Berkut and Rinea were added, and they are PEAK OTP the diskhorse can die mad. Also the cast is pretty fun all around, from buddy squad and the older brother/dad figure they adopted along the way to "hello this is my gang of childhood friends, we're gonna kill a god" Also introduces Mila's Turnwheel, which lets you rewind your moves if you realize you goofed big time and screwed yourself over.
Cons of SoV: has the most references to other games, but you won't, like, be lost if you don't get them. You just might have a few interludes of "who tf is Camus/the White Wing Brigade/etc" but it's easy enough to look up on the wiki. Also tbh, the plot kinda drags in the middle, there's some filler battles to try and make it feel more realistic and it feels...weird. Also no custom character, you are Alm and Celica and you will Like It.
Trigger warnings for SoV: you know that thing where a girl character gets killed off for a guy character to angst over? the game starts with a fakeout version of that. also a character slowly goes mad over the course of the plot (but it's really well done imo?), there's some self-sacrifice stuff in there, classism is a major theme, possession/selling your soul™, there's a couple of levels where you're exploring tombs/prisons, I'm sure there's something else but I'm forgetting right now
*line break for legibility*
Three Houses: on the Switch. The newest game in the series, and the most polished imo? Stars Byleth, a wandering mercenary turned teacher at the Officer's Academy. The Academy, housed in Garreg Mach Monastery, teaches youths from across the land of Fodlan how to be warriors, commanders, and knights. Students are sorted into three houses based on their country of origin: the Black Eagles are from ghe Adrestian Empire, led by the heiress-apparent Edelgard; the Blue Lions are from the kingdom of Faerghus, led by prince Dimitri; and the Golden Deer are from the Leicester Alliance, led by Claude, grandson of the Duke. You choose one of these houses to lead, and then everything quickly goes sour.
Pros of Three Houses: It's such a rich experience! The music is incredible, there's so much lore, and you can wander around the Monastery and hang out with the students to your heart's content. Also, it's four storylines for the price of one, even if they're all relatively similar in the first half. It does a pretty solid job of weaving together its themes into a satisfying narrative that will make you consider everyone involved. Also we got our first bi main lord (Edelgard) and non-white main lord (Claude is mixed race) in one fell swoop! Also, given the setting, it's teacher/student ship heaven.
Cons of Three Houses: just gonna come right out and say it: one of the villainous factions in the game is pretty substantially tied up with some anti-semitic tropes. There's no way to ignore it, it's just bleh, and I'm not gonna send anyone in without that warning. Also, though there's some characters you can persuade to switch sides, or spare, there's no route where there's a happy ending for everyone. Also there are so many people who are fake deep about the themes of the game, so be ready for the worst takes imaginable about your faves. also super trigger heavy, see below.
Trigger warnings: MANY. Garreg Mach and the Church of Seiros are very reminiscent of catholic religious stuff, for anyone with religion triggers, blood in cutscenes, death of a parent, death of a sibling (different characters), major gaslighting vibes in some places, lots of people going unhinged, some white savior™ vibes in places, body horror, creepy ass weaponry, backstory genoc-de (mostly not related to the anti-semitism), blood magic (definitely related to the anti-semitism), in general it goes to a lot more effort than the other games to make you think about what's Actually going on, even if it doesn't always work.
*break for legibility*
As for characters you'd like, if you just want to look some characters up, my recommendations based on what I understand about you include:
Awakening: Libra fits 'gnc man of the cloth' so well it's actually a conversation in game: "so what's a woman of the cloth doing here?" "...man, sir, man of the cloth." And Then He Never Gets Misgendered Again. Also Nowi's supports sometimes feel like a jab at antis-- she's a manakete, a person who can transform into a dragon. Manaketes also grow really slowly, as in "middle aged looking manaketes are like 1000 years old," so she's got major baby face and copes with being mistaken for a teenager by making jokes. Also Gregor, who she first appears with, is pretty fun--older mercenary with a thick accent who is like 80% here for a good time. Also Walhart, who's a villain but got some content added as DLC.
Fates: any interactions between Corrin, Leo, and/or Camilla are probably right up your alley--Camilla is obsessively protective over her siblings in a way that's Very Definitely Platonic™, and Leo also canonically has a crush on her in something that was cut in the English release. Also Gunther--once upon a time he was your classic knight in shining armor, now he's semi-retired, Corrin's personal guard, and covered in scars (and his voice is gorgeous too)
Echoes: my biased answer is to listen to every single line Ian Sinclair read for Berkut because he absolutely did NOT have to go that hard. My actual answer is to point you in the direction of the pegasus sisters Catria, Palla and Est, or maybe the older gentleman who's the head of the Priory, I forgot his name oops abbdbd. Also Clive is a devoted husband to one Mathilda, who looks just like an older version of his sister Clair 🤔
Three Houses: knowing you, you'd adore Hanneman--an older professor who's extremely passionate about his work, to the point where he tends to forget personal space and such. Also Seteth, like I mentioned before (join me in simping for him and his gorgeous pecs) and like, honestly, I know ppl make jokes about Alois but he's rlly good. Soft, awkward but he doesn't care, dad jokes everywhere. And also Mercedes, both because she's the biggest sweetheart imaginable and everyone should love her, but also bc she is just walking potential for the kinds of stuff you post on this blog. On one hand, she's the oldest student at the Academy and attached at the hip to one of the youngest, Annette (tho people act like they have a way bigger age gap then they actually do) and on the other hand, she has a long-lost half brother she can encounter (who I will not name for HUGE HUGE spoilers reasons) who she spends the rest of her life with in one of her endings. Heck, he has three possible endings total! Total!
Basically I brought the games up bc I'm used to being on the side of the fandom where everyone shoos anything uncomfortable under the rug, but there's so much material here that's being wasted I SWEAR
If you have any other questions I can send another anon? Your call! Thanks for hearing me out I love ur blog :3
OKAY!!! sorry for answering so late, but this ask was pretty much a BOOK (not that I´m complaining though! thank you so much! ;;u;;)
and from what I read here, I THINK if I´m going off on my first fire emblem adventure, I´ll try and pick up three houses if I get the chance! I have read your trigger warnings (thank you so much! ;u;) and I think I can take it! >:3
again though, I am really, really not a fan of anime and the anime artstyle in general (blergh! XP) so I´m not sure how I´ll cope with that in particular, but then again, an artstyle does not make a game! u3u
AND HANNEMAN SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER TO ME!! I looked him up and OOOF!!! he may not have NEARLY as many wrinkles as I´d like him to have, but the facial hair is definitely a step in the right direction! ;3c
NOW YOU GOT ME INTERESTED!!
LETS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

7KPP Identity Meta
[The subject of racism in fanfic has come up, and I’ve been contemplating how and weather to change how I tag my own fics. This disorganized piece of 7KPP meta grew from those thoughts.]
Aly of @azalynestudios has said numerous times (I can’t find exact quotes right now) that in order to allow players to see themselves in the MCs they create, she wanted to make it possible for any MC of any of the kingdoms to be a member of any race, and have any physical appearance. She has also mentioned that the kingdoms are very inter-mixed racially, and that all the characters are probably multiracial (here and here, for example). She’s also talked about having multiple historical inspirations for each of the kingdoms (too many sources to link them all).
Such is not the case for the NPCs of the different kingdoms, specifically the ones with visible sprite art. This is partly because the visual artist Bana had a huge influence in, for example, designing the fashion aesthetic of the different characters. But Aly has also stated here that the NPCs’ appearance is “closer to what the nations originally were dominated by“, compared to the more modern, diverse population. With the notable exception of post-coup Revaire. In-game, a few references are made to the “new nobility” of Revaire all having fair coloration and a similarity in appearance.
So, any player who wants to make an MC of any background have any combination of racial traits, is given solid backing both by canon text and by “word of god”. An Arland or Wellin MC who’s Black or Asian or mixed race is 100% as canon-compatible as a white one. Of course, that also means that a white Corval or Hise MC is also canon-compatible, but I think we can agree that the dynamic on that is quite different, in the same way that writing a canonically straight character into a slash relationship is very different from writing Lisle (gay) or Avalie (asexual) into a het relationship.
7KPP is a visual novel and the NPC sprites are designed for maximum visual coding. When the sprites for all the delegates from a single kingdom appear together on the screen, they are meant to look like they are obviously from the same place. With the exception of the Revaire NPCs. Clarmont is clearly designed to stand out from Gisette and Jarrod, and not just because they are siblings and he’s unrelated to them. It’s because he’s a member of Revaire’s old nobility, and they are of the new nobility. Aly explains about this, for example here.
Now, there is room to criticize this approach to portraying racial diversity, but that’s not what I’m going to do here. There has also been plenty of well-reasoned criticism on the portrayal of especially Corval and Jiyel, where despite Aly’s good intentions, harmful stereotypes had more influence on the end product than she realized. I will also not be addressing that issue in this post, but I did want to acknowledge that there are a lot of open and complex questions surrounding the issue of race in 7KPP canon.
As a player, I took all the above issues as guiding principles when creating my MCs, including the bit about not whitewashing Corval and Hise MCs, and especially the bit about Revaire. Revaire was a huge, multicultural empire like Rome, and even though the narration in the game, and Aly’s commentary, both specifically say that the Revaire widow is of the new nobility, I made my widow Allegra an Old Blood noble, like Clarmont. Specifically so that she would stand out, like him, from among the other Revaire delegates.
So Clarmont and Allegra’s relationship has a kind of racial subtext, because they are a dark-skinned couple in (eventually) open rebellion against a monarchy of extremely white, extremely blonde oppressors.
I feel increasingly that I, as a white writer, am not up to the complexities of writing this dynamic. Not with all the goodwill and compassion I can muster, not with all the studying and listening I can do. I’m not yet sure what I’m going to do with that revelation, though.
When I created my MCs I tried to be conscious both of the implications of canon, and of the complexities of real-life race relations. There are decisions that I might have done differently, if I were doing them now for the first time, especially when it comes to my Jiyel MCs. Most of my MCs, just like Aly says, come from families that are multiracial, going back generations. It’s more obvious with characters like Christabel, who has a white father on one side of the family and a Black mother and grandmother on the other. Less obvious with characters like Felicity and Jack, who could be easily taken for white.
And because of the way that race relations work in our world, the fact that they can be taken as white means that in a very real way, they are white. Because, well, that’s what whiteness is, that’s what it was created to do.
So I created Felicity, my Arland princess, and she was white. Not a golden-haired, blue-eyes princess, but still white, still with the peaches-and-cream complexion (actual canon description), and still with all the baggage thereof. But why must a princess be white? She doesn’t have to be, as Aly specifically said. When I created my second Arland princess, I gave that some thought, and out came Verity.
Verity is mixed race, like Felicity, but in a more obvious way. I try to describe her in a way that makes it obvious that she could not pass as white, without being othering or fetishizing. But that became difficult, because Verity married into Revaire, into the very “new nobility” above mentioned as being the only group in the modern seven kingdoms that actually is meaningfully racially homogeneous. This begins to come up in her story pretty early on, when she first meets and befriends Nerissa, a Revaire widow who -- unlike Allegra -- is of the new nobility. Deciding to make Nerissa and Claude (and their family) white was a decision that ended up having big implications.
Because, while I don’t want to exotify Verity as a character, others within the story definitely do other and fetishize her, and make her feel out of place. Once it started coming up in the drafts of my fanfics, I realized that I couldn’t ignore it. Verity is a multiracial girl living in the royal court of a multicultural empire, where the narrow slice of the elite has been striving to push everyone else out of the public sphere. This affects how she interacts with other people, and it means that with any supporting character I add to Decline and Fall, especially the nobles, I first have to give a good long think to their racial background.
It also meant that I have to give thought to Verity’s family and genealogy, especially when I decided that I wanted her ‘verse and Felicity’s to share a common root, and diverge. That means they have shared ancestors, and here I had the possibility of taking another look at Felicity’s uncomfortable whiteness. I could have decided to make Arland’s royal family white, going back through generations of whiteness, and only occasionally marrying in foreign brides, which could still account for Verity’s mixed heritage. I felt that it would be more interesting to do something else, and make the ancestors common to them both dark-skinned and curly-haired, like Verity, not fair and brunette like Felicity.
In “Wendel Abbey”, Verity mentions to Brielle that she has a Revairian ancestor, and Brielle remarks that she must “come by her curls honestly”, that is, suggesting that her curly hair comes from Revaire heritage. But Verity corrects her and says that all her father (the King of Arland)’s family have it. I guess this is meant to represent the way that twenty years of a racially homogeneous (and oppressive) leadership have altered Revaire’s way of relating to the demographic mix of the other six kingdoms. Brielle is Black and her whole family is Black -- excepting her stepfather, who’s not mentioned directly in any of the fics (yet). The post-coup reality has affected the way she was taught to see the world.
It feels a bit like I am trying to have it both ways, both to talk about race and not talk about it, and I don’t know if I’m doing a good job. I’m not even sure that I know where I’m going with this post, even though I started writing it with such a confident attitude. I just know that these ideas have been swirling in my head for months and years, and it’s time for me to bring them out to see the outside world.
All my MCs are multiracial in the sense of their family trees, but some of them are easily identified as being characters of color. How to say this? In a modern AU, some of them would be stopped for a random check at the airport much more often than others. Allegra, Marguerite, Christabel and Verity are all on this list. Felicity, Jack, and Nerissa are not. Brielle is. Tristan is not. And so on.
If I had thought about all these things more clearly before I created my six original MCs, maybe I would have made my Arland princess a Black girl. Or my tomboy countess. Or maybe I would have made them both Asian. Maybe I would have made my Jiyel MC Black, instead of basing her appearance on stereotypical East Asian traits, as I did with Periwinkle. I probably wouldn’t have made her white, for the reasons I outlined above -- I’m not saying that white MCs are anti-canon or wrong in any way, but it would have been too uncomfortable for me. Part of me thinks, “but then what? I would have no white MCs at all?” And another part of me replies, “Well, what if I didn’t?”
Which is kind of an empty dialogue on my part, because I went and wrote Felicity and Jack being who they are, without thinking too much about what their whiteness means, and I’m probably not gonna go back and retcon that. All the thinking that I do about it has to be retrospective.
There are other points of discomfort, like the way stats and personality interact with racist stereotype, and the way that butts up against my own personal preferences in terms of female characters. It’s no secret that Allegra is my favorite among my MCs, and also no secret that my favorite build to play is based around 75 points in manipulation. Which in a gameplay context creates a really powerful character who can broker peace treaties and fall in love and do a lot of heroic things. But nonetheless, there’s a subtext to creating a brown female character and immediately labeling her “manipulative”. Allegra’s build also took a hit to the beauty stat, as did several others of my favorite characters, and there’s a subtext there, too, like it or not.
I was especially uncomfortable with the fact that my two high-manip characters, Marguerite and Allegra, were both dark-skinned brown women. Despite the fact that they’re very different from each other, and despite the fact that I love them both, and despite that I tried to give them both deep and rich character development that makes them much more than their stats. I did create another character, Xanthine the weaver!MC, who is also based on the 75-manip build, and made her white. This... helped a little? I guess?
This is what I mean about the clash between my preferences and the racial stereotypes. The traits that create the kind of female character I’m most interested in, are ones that can easily be interpreted in a very negative light. I can’t ignore the implications of that, however much I might like to dismiss it by saying, “I just made her what I love to see.”
Of course I’m going to carry all these ideas forward, into any new game OCs I create, and especially into original fiction writing. And I want to stress that I’m just one very confused white gamer and fanfic writer, and I don’t have all the answers. I just think the questions are worth asking all the same, and to that end, I sat down and spent an hour or more writing this very confused (and confusing) spiel.
You are welcome to: reblog with comments, reblog with criticism, link to this post, post your own reflection on the race and ethnicity of your OCs, send m4e asks about any of these characters, etc. Remarks along the lines of “it’s stupid to care about racism in fandom” or “there’s nothing wrong with being white” will be roundly ignored as being beside the point. If you’ve read this far (or even skimmed it) I’m amazed and astonished. I’ve lost any gift for brevity that I ever had.

THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020)
Starring Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, Michael Dorman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Benedict Hardie, Amali Golden, Sam Smith, Zara Michaels, Anthony Brandon Wong, Myles Rice, Nash Edgerton, Dennis Kreusler, Michael Knott, Randolph Fields, Serag Mohamed and Bianca Pomponio.
Screenplay by Leigh Whannell.
Directed by Leigh Whannell.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 110 minutes. Rated R.
Once in a while as a film reviewer – hell, as a filmgoer in general – you go into a movie not expecting all that much and are totally blown away by the movie.
Take The Invisible Man. It is yet another version of the old HG Wells novel, which was already made into a classic film 87 years ago with Claude Rains (and has been remade several times.)
Now, it is being updated for the new millennium and was originally conceived to be part of Universal’s aborted classic monsters universe series with Johnny Depp in the lead. That series pretty much died on the first take – Tom Cruise’s awful reboot of The Mummy – however this script was already written and Universal decided to do it as a stand-alone film.
The new version of The Invisible Man is helmed by Leigh Whannell, the somewhat cheesy horror maestro behind the Saw and Insidious series. (Whannell even played one of the two lead roles in the first Saw movie and had a supporting role as an actor in Insidious.)
So, I went in figuring it would be a decent genre film, probably a bit too violent for the source material and playing fast and loose with the original structure.
It is all those things, but I had no idea how creepy and well-made it would be. This is a huge step up for Whannell as a filmmaker. Also, not hiring Depp or some other Hollywood star – the biggest name in the new Invisible Man cast is Elisabeth Moss, who is a well-respected actress, but hardly A-list – the story is not distracted by star power and just weaves its devious web.
Also, smartly, Whannell decided to bring this intrepid chiller tale up to the current #MeToo generation.
Moss plays an abused woman who escapes the compound of her tech genius boyfriend, only to come to suspect that he has figured out a way to become invisible, allowing him to stalk her without her really knowing and to make the people around her believe she is going mad. Picture Sleeping with the Enemy with an ex that the heroine – and the people around her – cannot see.
They don’t go deep into the science behind the invisibility – and honestly I’m not sure I buy that it would work – but if you are willing to suspend disbelief on this and a few other shaky plot points, you are in for quite a ride.
Moss excels in a rare lead role for her, commanding the screen in many scenes in which she seems to be alone – even some in which she is fighting for her life with an invisible foe, which could look ridiculous, but somehow never does.
The story is smart and nuanced, the acting is across the board terrific and the scares are subtle and chilling. Towards the end it gets a little overly violent for its own good, but even that mostly works in the context of the story.
If this is what the Universal Classic Horror Universe was going to look like, perhaps they should give it another shot after all.
