Here are 10 things you should know about Harpo Marx, born 135 years ago today. He and his brothers were stars in virtually every arena of show biz and no one ever had a bad word to say about him.
We’re approaching the five year anniversary(!) of when I first saw the biopic “Stan & Ollie,” which made me delve into Laurel and Hardy’s work and begin drawing them. Today would be Oliver Hardy’s birthday as well. I’m continuing my almost-annual tradition of redrawing my very first picture of the duo, based on the poignant dance in the final scene of “Stan & Ollie.”
My Laurel and Hardy love has helped me as an artist. Their movies influenced the comedy and timing of my comic strips. Drawing them forced me to break my old habit of drawing everyone with the same body type, so I could start embracing the contrasts that make life so interesting. They served as my gateway to the work of more comedians, all of whom I love, but L&H remain my favorites. I’m glad to have met many other fans from around the world on social media. And I’m honored that many of you have begun to associate them with me!
In honor of Women’s History Month and belated International Women’s Day, here is a portrait of my favorite iconic lady! While I love all of Ruth Buzzi’s characters and they’re widely remembered and loved, I also want people to remember that she is fabulously funny and beautiful as herself.
Excited to finally reveal a postcard design I made for The Marx Brothers Council Podcast! They recently opened a Patreon and one of the perks of subscribing is receiving monthly postcards featuring all-new artwork. They’re looking for more artists, so I encourage anyone who’s interested to check into that opportunity!
Happy birthday to Stan the man!! 132 years young. This is my own take on L&H’s “tell me that again” routine- where Stan makes a really good point, Ollie asks him to repeat it, and then he completely ruins it. However, I call it “Stansplaining!”
