First attempt at a minor restoration project
Adventures in buying used shit from ebay
Episode 1
Back in the days before the pandemic, I used to give piano lessons to kids. One student liked to call everyone “bro,” including me, so I’d like to pass on that sentiment to my dolls. Everyone’s a bro, bruh, brah.
This blondie is Ellis, my lil dude. I got her for cheap on ebay, the kind of cheap that makes you think she’ll arrive with a number of flaws and broken parts. Limbs that hang from their sockets and rattle like maracas. Eyes rusted shut. You get the gist.
Once I received the package and opened her up, it was a de-LIGHT to see that her limbs were still tight, and the only noticeable disaster was that frizzy, dry hair. I’m not against this type of hair — it perfectly describes my own.
She came with a side braid, lipstick, and a few smudge marks across the face. This is a Just Like You #56 but obviously received some special treatment. Her hair reeks of product: the detergent smell of shampoo. I washed my dolls’ hair as a kid, so I can’t blame the previous owner. Kids just do kid stuff. She’s meant to have large curls, and luckily, most of them are still there.
To revamp her with minimal effort, I knew I had two goals:
1.) Tame some of the frizzy hair.
2.) Wash her limbs and get rid of the lipstick (— or chapstick? Who can say.)
I used a wire brush and warm water to get rid of the tangles. Did it work? Eh, it could have gone better. [PICTURED ABOVE: The point when I thought: “Oh shit, oh damn, maybe this isn’t a good idea.”] She’s lost some hair, and there are a few gaps in the wig. These things can be hidden for now, right? She’s also got blue coloring on some of the ends. I have no idea what would cause this. Is it leftover shampoo? The stain of a blue popsicle that melted and dripped onto the doll’s head? Like I said, kids be kids.
I also used a magic eraser to clean the limbs and wash her face. She seemed relatively clean until I looked down at the eraser to see all the brown gunk that washed away. I’m not afraid of dirt, so I just sorta looked at it, thought huh, and thanked myself for NOT skipping this step. A used doll is never as clean as you think it is.
I “styled” — a word I use loosely here — her hair and dressed her in a new outfit. Anyways, this how she turned out:
Is she finished? Nah, that wig will need some touching up, because there are significant gaps in the back. Not pictured: her bald spot. Plus, she has empty holes for earrings, and it’ll be fun to make something from my jewelry supplies. But she’s all set for now.
What’s she wearing? Glad you asked. I was going for an ambiguous 40s/50s vibe. The plaid skirt and sweater come from the World Traveler in Ireland AG outfit. The blouse and saddle shoes came from ebay. She is dressed and blessed and ready to hit the streets.

Let me see if I’m getting this right for asks…! My OTP remains Egon Spengler and Janine Melnitz from Ghostbusters (specifically the first movie and the 1980s-90s animated series). They were originally a B-plot love story in the movie, but it was mostly removed in the edit. However, you can still see hints of the relationship teased in the movie and the cartoons. This is a small but mighty fandom who shares this ship! I am indebted to all the fanfic writers from years and years ago who have kept their story alive.
The scene that makes me most emotional in the movie…well, can it be any emotion?? Because the first scene of Egon and Janine together always makes my heart flutter. It’s right after we first meet Janine. She is sitting at her desk in the firehouse, passing the time because business is slow. Peter is annoyed that she has seemingly nothing to do. They have a snarky exchange. Shortly after Peter leaves to enter his office, we see Egon appear—he was under Janine’s desk the whole time. He was fixing her computer or the alarm system (although one of my friends truly believes it was meant as a risqué joke about what he was really doing under there!).
You just have to see the scene for yourself. It’s subtle but hilarious imho. Janine is trying to make polite, flirty small talk, and Egon is engaging in the only way he knows how: being factual and serious.
Also some rare insightful Reddit commentary explaining the exchange. These are some of my favorite Egon and Janine lines in the movie! It always stirs up happy emotions:

I just realized I forgot to share my pictures of this guy here! Allow me to introduce the elucidating Meddler from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, Robert E. O. Speedwagon! I became a fan of him back in June 2021 after…a not so great first impression my first watch through of Phantom Blood back in 2020. I initially thought he was annoying since all he seemed to do was stand there and scream and state the obvious. Not my cuppa.
But then after my friend told me he’s “a dad friend” to Jonathan, I took a closer look at both the anime and at scenes in the manga that did not make it into the anime. What I saw was a character who combines Everything I love. Every negative trait that makes characters fun. Every positive trait that makes them lovable. Everything about him stood out. Then I finally saw part two and could not help but want to hug the old man. Those of you who know me, know that my favorite character for the past decade has been Scrooge McDuck, whom I hyper-focused on and researched and bought way too many comics for. Speedwagon is a combination of young Scrooge before he became a hardened, greedy multidecaquadzillionaire, and old Scrooge who is crafty, cunning, knows every trick in the book when it comes to running a business, and caught between the limitations of his aging body and his own strong will. Speedwagon is super loyal, super confident, super observant, selfless, and quick to validate his friends, yet occasionally self-deprecating, calling himself a useless bystander and expressing frustration at not being able to fight back personally against the horrible odds stacked against his friends. His selflessness is visible from his mob boss days when he checked on his friends’ condition before deciding it was okay to lower his guard and make a new friend, to the international non profit organization he formed to continue his quest to help and protect humanity and nature.
I could not love this character more, so when I found out there was a new action figure coming out this year for him, I saved up and jumped on the bandwagon to grab him. It’s the first new merchandise that’s been produced for this great character in a decade and I wanted to show support for him. The lottery sold out pretty quickly but second chances came up and now this boy has a home with my model horses.
The Medicos Super Action Statue figure is a bit stiffer and more prone to rubs than I expected. I already broke one of the feather decorations on his bowler hat, but I adore the facial sculpt. The subtle smirk. The worry lines. The mane. Even though Bald Wagon is a bit cursed-looking without his toupee, I can’t resist his adorableness otherwise.
So… Yeah. This grown-up horse girl has one super buff action figure in her collection and his name is based on a American band, which is based on a car.
