Vil Schoenheit caught his reflection in the mirror above the lounge fireplace, and set his jaw. He was beautiful, yes, but with a certain severity. Is that what made him unapproachable? He exhaled, nostrils flaring, and adjusted his tiara. It wasn't his fault, the way he looked; he wasn't trying to make himself look imposing. Would he ever have the soft, gentle appeal of his rival? Would anyone ever see him as a comfort, as a friend they could rely upon? Is he forever doomed to the icy villain's role, the aloof and standoffish bad guy? He turned away from his reflection and started towards the lounge door, heels clacking against the floor tiles.

He was met at the doorway by one of his freshmen. She looked completely bedraggled. Her eyes were red-rimmed and watery; her dorm uniform was rumpled and dotted with damp spots; even her little brown cat ears were drooping in her disheveled hair. "Housewarden!!" she said with a start, and took a step back. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you."

"It's all right, spudling." He frightened her. Of course he did, looking like he does. Vil stepped to one side, allowing her access to the room. "Come in. Is there something wrong?"

She sniffled as she entered the room, and wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "I'm..." She gulped, then continued. "Housewarden?" she asked in a tiny voice. "Am I allowed to go home?"

"It needs to be approved by the headmage, once I send in the request... did something happen at home? Do you need to be there?" Vil gently guided the girl over to a couch, and sat her down. "I've never seen one of my little potatoes crumble so badly, Mia. What is happening?"

She shook her head. "N- nothing's going on there. I just. I. I." She hiccuped, and the tears started flowing again. "I just really miss my Grammy!!" she wailed, and slumped against the back of the couch.

Vil wasn't sure how to proceed. He reached out gingerly, and patted Mia on her shoulder. "Your grandmother, yes? Are you two cl—OOF." He was cut off mid-thought by the girl suddenly catching him in a rib-crushing embrace, one that he would have never thought someone as tiny as her could be capable of. However, he did keep gently patting her, even as she sobbed into his uniform top.

"She's been tay. Taking care of me 'n Sia since we were little. And. And. And she would always brush my. My hair before bed. And we would. We'd. We'd talk about everything? And she's so pretty and so stylish and cool and I miss her so muuuuuuuuch." Mia babbled as she clung to Vil, and he gently rocked back and forth as she went on. When she finally finished crying, she froze up, as if realizing exactly whose arms she had thrown herself into. "Um. Housewarden, I'm... I'm so sorry...."

Vil took Mia by the shoulders and sat her up. He took a black handkerchief from his pocket, and blotted the tears around her eyes. "Do not apologize for this. As much as we try to stay level-headed here, there is a great beauty in the love we have for our families. I can approve a weekend visit, Mia, so long as you can assure me that your responsibilities here will be taken care of." He handed her the handkerchief. "Blow your nose."

Mia complied, making a tiny squeak. She looked gratefully up at Vil. "Can I really? I'll call Grammy and see when I can go. I'll. Um. Hang on." She reached inside her uniform, and took out her phone, showing it to him. On the lockscreen was a photo of the two sisters and their grandmother.

Vil took the phone. "All three of you? I see." The girls were familiar to him, both the sleekly pretty older sister and the bubbly, wide-eyed Mia. But the grandmother... she was a cat beastman, like the girls, but had a more sophisticated air to her. Her icy blue eyes had a severe, aloof look to them, over prominently angled cheekbones. Her silver-blond hair was tucked into a firm bun, with just a few wisps around the edges to soften the look. Her jaw was set firmly, and her gaze was no-nonsense.

Vil looked back at Mia, who was gazing at him shyly. "You're a lot like her, housewarden. I guess that. That's why I'm. Um. I look up to you so much. You've got a. A warm side. But people don't. They don't look for it." She hiccuped again as he handed her her phone.

"Let me know the dates," Vil said, "and I'll arrange for permission for you to go." He patted Mia's shoulder again, feeling her soften in relief. "And tell your grandmother that I say hello, would you? She seems a remarkable woman."

"Really?? Thank you, housewarden!!" She almost threw herself at him for another hug, but stopped herself, and just presented a beaming smile instead. "I'll call her right away! I'm so glad you were here. I needed someone I could be comfortable with!"

Comforting, eh? he thought as the girl got to her feet, getting ready to make a call. Mia might not be representative of how the world sees him, but Vil was momentarily happy. There was at least one person who wasn't put off by him. There was hope for him to become the hero, yet.
