Details of the the Glass Dome from Inside Neiman Marcus , San Francisco. This was was the former City of Paris Building - Intersection of Geary and Stockton Streets. It was one of the few buildings in downtown San Francisco to survive the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Built 1896 Rebuilt 1909 Demolished 1981 The City of Paris Building was demolished and replaced by the Neiman Marcus building designed by New York City architect Philip Johnson. City of Paris, was one of several San Francisco buildings nominated for historical recognition in a failed attempt to save them from the wreckers ball. The ship was the official seal of the City of Paris Store. Built in 1909 the Latin inscription “Fluctuat nec mergitur” translates “it floats but it does not sink” in 1981 the 2600 pieces which comprised the City of Paris dome were sent a Massachusetts for restoration. In 1982 the dome was reinstalled by Neiman Marcus as the focal point of its rotunda restaurant only 100 feet from its original location. The dome and it’s grandeur has become a trademark for Neiman Marcus in San Francisco it is considered part of the stores collection of fine art. L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, a temporary artwork for Paris,

The Arc de Triomphe will be wrapped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable polypropylene fabric in silvery blue, and with 3,000 meters of red rope.

In 1961, three years after they met in Paris, Christo and Jeanne-Claude began creating works of art in public spaces. One of their projects was to wrap a public building. When he arrived in Paris, Christo rented a small room near the Arc de Triomphe and had been attracted by the monument ever since.

In 1962, he made a photomontage of the Arc de Triomphe wrapped, seen from the Avenue Foch and, in 1988, a collage. 60 years later, the project will finally be concretized.

L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped is entirely funded by the Estate of Christo V. Javacheff, through the sale of Christo's preparatory studies, drawings, and collages of the project as well as scale models, works from the 1950s and 1960s, and original lithographs on other subjects. It receives no public funds.
