2016-Killing of Christina Grimmie

Christina Victoria Grimmie (March 12, 1994 – June 10, 2016) was an American singer and YouTuber. n 2009, she began posting covers of popular songs onto YouTube. After releasing her debut EP, Find Me (2011), her YouTube channel reached one million subscribers. After she reached two million subscribers, she released her debut studio album, With Love (2013).

On June 10, 2016, Grimmie performed with Before You Exit at The Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida. Earlier in the day, she posted an announcement on social media asking people to attend the concert.After her performance ended at 10:00 p.m. local time, Grimmie signed autographs inside the venue. At 10:24 p.m., she was approached by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl without saying a word. Thinking he was too shy to greet her, she opened her arms to give him a hug (which would be her trademark way of greeting someone if she deemed them to be shy).

Loibl then pulled his Glock pistol and shot her three times at point-blank range. As witnesses fled the scene, Loibl was tackled by Grimmie's brother, and the men scuffled. Loibl broke free, backed against a wall, and fatally shot himself.

i know i said i was gonna post a story today, but every year, since 2016, i rarely post on this day.

if you didn’t know, 5 years ago today, Christina Grimmie was shot and killed during a meet and greet. i absolutely loved Christina Grimmie, and i remember vividly my mom calling me into her room moments after waking up, the day after it happened (tomorrow). she told me that Christina had been shot, and didn’t make it.

it was the most heartbreaking moment of my life. i had a hair appointment an hour later, and i cried through it. i had a family gathering, and i cried the majority of it. i found out that day that i was going to Disney World, and i was even more sad, because i should have been happy, but i wasn’t.

my favourite singer in the whole world, was dead, due to an obsessive fan. Kevin James Loibl killed Christina because he believed they belonged together. he walked up to her, and shot her in the chest, before cowardly killing himself, all in front of her young fans. i was 16 at the time, as were the majority of her fans, some even younger.

there isn’t a day that goes by that i don’t think about how she deserved better. she was kind, sweet, caring, beautiful. she inspired me to start singing in my church’s youth praise team, something i continued for a few months after her death, but eventually stopped when having to think about her and about the fact that she was killed in such a malicious way every time i sang.

she didn’t deserve this. her mom didn’t deserve this. her father, brother, cousins, friends, boyfriend didn’t deserve this. she isn’t here today because of Kevin Loibl, and i refuse to let her death be forgotten.

The first time I saw this face.

This video was posted 9 years ago and that’s how long I’ve know this absolutely wonderful angel.

It’s a strange thing, to be aware of not being able to change or undo what happened and that it doesn’t do to dwell on the grief and pain and to understand that it isn’t healthy or worth it to cry about someone, even when she was your biggest influence growing up.

And still, you sit there, in the same spot, in the same room, and the tears won’t stop falling and your entire body is shaking and it almost breaks your heart every time again because it will always mean as much as it simply does. In those moments, no one else could convince you otherwise. For no matter the circumstances, no matter the years that have passed, those feelings are real.

So this is love.

Please let her light shine on.

Let her memory live on.

For I will make sure she does within my heart.
