CHICAGO - A South Side eatery is celebrating 50 years in business. They're believed to be the oldest running Black-owned soul food restaurant in Chicago.
St. Rest Country Kitchen along 87th Street and Cottage Grove has been a Chicago staple for half a century. The menu boasts a variety of dishes, including turkey legs, short ribs, smothered pork chops, cabbage, black-eyed peas, succotash, and candied yams.
Owner and head chef Daniella Coffey, along with her husband John, inherited the restaurant from her father in 2021 – the late Rev. Larry Hopkins, who founded the eatery in 1972. At that time, the business was facing significant challenges, with $600,000 in debt and foreclosure looming. Tragically, her father passed away just two months later.
Coffey said that within a year, the family managed to pay off the debt, restructure the business, and now they're thriving.
"Great customer service, sanitation and great food. Those are our pillars here and of course faith," Coffey said.
It’s beyond just Soul food – it’s a story of resilience. The restaurant has attracted the likes of NBA legend Michael Jordan.
It’s a family thing, with 77-year-year old matriarch Sophia Hopkins serving as lead waitress. When she’s not singing her southern tunes, she’s making customers feel right at home.
"As soon as you walk through the doors, everyone is family. That’s just how it is down south back in the day," said Angela Chatman, general manager.
Outside the restaurant, Coffey inspires women all over the world to walk in their purpose.
"You don’t need another person to validate you. You have everything that you need in your hands. The only thing left is for you to use it," she said.
The restaurant operates on Fridays through Sundays.
nabbed these screenshots from youtube, it looks like the area in chicago where the LI grew up is race determinant, fascinating!!! does anyone have a screenshot for the brown LI face?
You can get a combo (italian beef & sausage) all over chicago but i just tried a beef and gyro combo and it was fantastic?? The giardinera was too spicy for me unfortunately, was really missing some tzatziki, but otherwise so so SO good. And cheese fries.
The one man who's fucked over more people in the South Side than any other person in existence.
And Monica Gallagher.
His wife. His female counterpart. Together they had seven kids. Me and my twin sister Fiona, Lip, Ian, Debbie, Carl, and little Liam.
It's obvious they aren't going to win any awards for parenting...but we didn't want to be split up...that's why Fiona and I run the house. We kick in to the squirrel fund. And we make sure that none of us are in foster care if we can help it.
This is our story...

lord help me i started watching shameless, about to finish season 1. this show hates women so much. also just the sheer amount of sexual assault played for comedy. it's cool if it happens to men right? like fr why are half the women on this show sexually abusive to their male partners it's so uncomfortable to watch and a prime example of how fucking weird this show is about women. like don't get me wrong, i think it's important to show that men can be and are abused by women. but a) the show consistently plays that shit for laughs to an uncomfortable degree and b) why do so many of the women have to be fucking predators? also fuck kash. step away from the underage boy. anyway it will surprise no one that i believe in fiona supremacy. girlie's just trying her best. and her friendship with v is just immaculate. i love v so much. literally the only woman in the show who is allowed to be sexually dominant without the writers making it weird and abusive (i'm choosing to disregard that episode where she's so horrible to her brother so i can continue liking her). also fiona's relationship with all the kids is adorable, but her relationship with debbie in particular is very buffydawn and i'm so invested. sadly, i've already thoroughly spoiled myself, so i know that shit will get really bad between them and i'm dreading it. might just stop watching before that happens.
what is fucking wild about going to my aunts place is one: thick Chicago accents that get thicker as you go, I have not heard the letter T in 3 hours
two: former addicts just rolling up for a drink/smoke (all great people but somehow worse (?) than the other addicts not present?)
three: deb (6ft 2in, hair like Madonna, carded me at the local/family dive because she wanted to fuck with me) saying “billy if you have more than one drink, I’ll knock you the fuck out. I love you. but don’t fuck with me.”
four: her husband Vince: “it’s fine it’s a rum and coke”
