Candice Bergen decides to wait up for Santa Clause on Christmas Eve 1949.
“Let’s get one thing straight: I don’t want your pity. However, this photo of Charlie McCarthy and me in our matching feety pajamas neatly sums up my childhood. My father was a ventriloquist—on the radio—and the dummy he created was a cocky, charming character who went on to become an icon in 40s and 50s America. While technically an only child, I was always known—as a kid, at least—as ‘Charlie’s sister.’ Now I want your pity. Is it any wonder my early performances in film were referred to as ‘wooden’?
“This picture was one of many photo ops that people in the entertainment business were required to do for fan magazines to maintain ‘awareness.’ It shows the two of us from a Christmas layout taken at our home in Beverly Hills; I was four. The curse of having a wooden brother. That would not be reversed until some 30 years later when, playing Murphy Brown, I realized I was channeling Charlie.”

My mom got me this little book last Christmas! I know it’s been a while since then, but I thought I would finally share it.
As soon as I saw this book, I was overwhelmed with so many emotions because Edgar Bergen signed it. I deeply care about Edgar Bergen, so seeing and holding something that I know he interacted with made me feel so many things. The book itself is this promotional item for the Goldwyn Follies that talks about Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy’s daily lives as if Charlie were a real person. It’s clearly fictionalized and is not an actually accurate depiction of Edgar Bergen’s life at the time. Honestly it reads like a fanfic even though it was official, and I mean that in a very fun, positive way. It was enjoyable to read and I was so happy to get something that was signed by Edgar Bergen!

Having been born without the ability to see in 3-D, I often wonder what it’s like. At least I don’t have to pay extra to see 3-D movies.

An obscene joke got past the censors when comedian Fred Allen guested on an episode of the Chase and Sanborn Hour starring Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.
The premise was that Fred Allen was unemployed. Edgar Bergen recalled:
“He was out of work and he was going to team up with Charlie...
He [Fred Allen] says, ‘Oh, thank you, thank you, Mr. McCarthy. I kiss the hem of your tuxedo!’
He [Charlie McCarthy] said, ‘It’s a tailcoat.’
He [Fred Allen] said, ‘In that case, I’ll blow you.’
Well, we got away with that.”
