New Characters Ahoy!

Thinking about Captain AJ Griffin, Morgan Reese, and K̵̨̦̝̰̣͕̞̘͗̀̏̚a̵̜͈̗͕̫̪͌̐̃̓̉̇͌̚l̷̨̯͈̼̱̥̩̿͑̋̇̓͒͐ aboard the Ellen Austin

hello! I am FINE and NORMAL and have been very CALMLY and very CASUALLY thinking about episode three and the new information we have about the characters our beloved quartet will be sailing with next month. 😇

...Yeah, I didn't believe that either.

Let's just get right to the unhinged rambling part of the post, shall we?

Sike! The post is still hinged for a minute while I give you a quick rundown of each character.

⚓️ AJ Griffin, the Captain

voiced by Jeff Blim

rigid leader, fiercely loyal to his crew

Civil War veteran haunted by the past

@man-down-in-hatchet-town's favorite

⚓️ Morgan Reese, the Bosun

voiced by Huck Walton

first appears at the end of episode 2

kind, adventurous, friend to all

Yup. That's them. I can't wait to hear what they get up to when the episode comes out. But in the meantime, I've got a brain that won't shut up and a pal to throw half-baked theories and wild speculation at, so here's some stuff we've been talking about.

Before Matt starts introducing us to these characters, we're presented with some questions:

Who is in command? Who will have our backs? Who can we trust when things go sideways?

The first answer comes to us easily enough. We can assume that the one in command (at least at the start of it all) is Captain AJ Griffin.

The second answer is also pretty clear. Morgan Reese is the man who's meant to look after everyone. It's literally his job, and he's already helped (will help?) Samuel, Rose, Margaret, and John by getting them aboard the ship. So he probably has our backs.

The third answer, if we follow the pattern & use the process of elimination, would have to be the last named character: Kal. Except the only thing we know for sure about Kal is that they're a passenger who will impact the story in a big way. So can we really trust them? (Perhaps more importantly: can we trust Matt when he says/implies we can trust Kal? He's already proven to be pretty sneaky...)

Actually, can we/the quartet trust any of these characters? We know a little bit about them now (2 out of 3, anyway) but they're not going to exist in a vacuum—there are so many other things we don't know about the adventure they're taking part in that are going to influence what these characters do and whether they'll be allies or antagonists. Not all Bad Guys™ are bad guys, and not all good guys are Good Guys™, if you know what I mean.

The way I see it, there are a few different ways this could go...

⚓️ Captain Griffin is already haunted, so he's vulnerable to whatever dark powers are at play, and Morgan Reese will be left to try and hold the ship together and keep everyone (including his captain) safe.

We're told that AJ is a strong ally, but that he "casts a heavy shadow" and is "weathered by the darkness of men." "Echoes of his past are always right beneath the currents, rippling, rhyming. And it will haunt him once again..."

When we hear about Morgan, there are no references like these. Instead, we're told about how the bosun is everyone's buddy, a friend to all. He stands in pretty stark contrast to the tragic, noble but melancholy picture of AJ we're given.

If the captain is overwhelmed by ghosts—his or someone else's—the bosun's heart and positivity could potentially hold everyone steady, at least long enough to sort out the trouble. Sea shanties are for morale, after all, and Morgan's fairly good at guitar.

⚓️ Captain Griffin is hardened by the past and can handle the pressure, but Morgan Reese is unprepared and could end up inadvertently spreading darkness and fear throughout the entire ship.

You know, like exposure therapy; AJ's already borne witness to some awful, awful things, so maybe he has a tolerance for it. He's already been managing his own darkness, so we could have a same captain, different ghosts sort of situation. If you think about it, it might be a little easier to deal with someone else's ghosts instead of your own. It's less personal.

Morgan, on the other hand, has no tragedy in his past as far as we're aware, but we do know that he "doesn't match AJ's level of precision or experience." If he's never had to face true darkness before, he might not know how to keep it from snuffing his light out. And since Morgan is described as "the perfect conduit" I'm pretty sure that means whatever's up with him gets passed on to everyone. If he loses hope, maybe the Ellen Austin does too.

⚓️ Morgan Reese as a character is actually way too good to be true so he's actually a Big, Lying, Liar Pants who will give me trust issues and break my fairly-good-guitarist loving heart because he has ulterior motives.

Brooke (you meanie /jk) had to go and scare me by pointing out how weird it is that we keep getting hints of how dark and spooky this episode could be, and AJ is revealed to us as a tragic, sad veteran, but then Morgan is just this ray of sunshine in dark waters who is fairly good at guitar. And I hate to admit it because I was immediately besotted with this character the moment I heard about his quite-good sea shanties, but that's a valid point.

Maybe Morgan is playing a long game, one that required him to have "endeared himself to all," and now that he finally has the trust of his captain and the ear of his shipmates, he's ready to kick things off and conspire with some spirits. Does he "have our backs" in the sense of oh what a lovely place to store my knife ??? 😱😥 I hope not!!! But now I have to emotionally prepare myself for that possibility, lmao.

"Oh, but Jack," you say, "what about Kal? You went and made their name all funkyspooky in the header and everything, so why haven't you mentioned them yet???"

First of all, aww thank you for noticing! I had to scroll through [redacted] open tabs on Firefox to find my cursed text generator for that, so I'm glad it was appreciated. <3

Second of all,

✨️drama. ✨️

Whatever's up with Kal is vital to the story and probably the biggest contributor to my current lack of hinges, so of course I had to save them for last.

I have two primary theories revolving around Kal that I'm struggling to choose between...

⚓️ We should be scared of the dark, actually, because Kal is—or controls—the dark.

⚓️ Kal is actually totally fine and chill and a friend, and the actual dark forces are making them seem threatening on purpose.

MAIA's transmissions for this episode have been pretty spooky. Something is getting into MAIA's room and interfering with the broadcasts, first by cracking a pane of glass in the window in transmission 10 when we were being told not to fear the dark, and again by shattering the lightbulb in transmission 11 right when we were going to hear about Kal. ("It seems that some inhabitants of the Pulp universe are less forthcoming than others.") Then, when the broadcast ended, there was a swirling shadow outside the window. Niiice and ominous.

"Margaret is not the only one awakening," Matt tells us in the trailer. "Our heroes will find that the light of discovery can bring forth shadows darker than anything they could have ever imagined."

I would venture that whatever's awakening is probably doing so in response to Margaret—her light is bringing forth the shadows. Maybe the shadows were already there in the Sargasso Sea, "this place where the water itself is haunted, where the air is thick with spirits," and the light is just deepening them. Maybe they're everywhere, and they're feeling threatened, so they're attacking MAIA's room to prevent us from learning their secrets and to remind us that we should be scared of the dark, actually, because dreams may start there but so, too, do nightmares.

I spent a lot of this time convinced that Kal is the source of the shadows, starting with a conversation my sister and I had the instant we both watched the transmission.

behold, the first reference to the anti-Margaret

Kal, as the anti-Margaret, could be another seemingly human person with strange powers, but instead of the Radiance, their magic is something else, something darker. Maybe they can spawn limbs of shadow the way she can produce light, and maybe they can conjure ghosts the way the Traveler brought a whole jungle paradise into existence on the Sagitta.

I don't believe it's a coincidence that the transmission was interrupted right before we were going to learn about Kal. My first instinct was that this must have been Kal's doing, that they're the one who doesn't want to be known, but after re-examining the transmission and the question about trust, it makes me wonder. Maybe we should trust Kal—after all, what's a bigger sign of trust than giving it when there are still so many unanswered questions? Maybe the quartet will be faced with the same struggle as us.

If the shadows/dark forces aren't Kal's doing, then they could be trying to sabotage Kal because of how important they are to the quartet's story. If Kal is the one to trust when things go sideways, then the shadows might want to do all they can to keep Kal obscured, hidden and silenced so our heroes can't get their help, or won't trust them enough to accept it when it's offered.

I, for one, think either option would be very fun and exciting to listen to. Or neither!

Now, I think this post is long enough, so I think this'll be it for today. and while I may be suspicious of Matt's little hints and teasers about the new episode, I definitely trust him to take these characters and tell a really good story with them.

...man, I can't wait for September.

Oooh, all of those are very good choices! I keep meaning to rewatch Phineas and Ferb because I haven't seen it since it came out but I just keep watching the newer stuff that's releasing instead 😖 Anyway, I know I'm late to the party but did your Spotify/Apple Wrapped have any Disney Channel songs? Any songs from one of your Disney Channel character or ship playlists or Disney Channel artists? I didn't have that many Disney Channel songs on my playlist this year, which surprised me a little to be honest. - GCWCA SECRET SANTA

you should try watching it again (only if you want to of course!!) i know they're making more episodes so i'm super excited for that!!!

yes, my apple music replay did have disney channel songs/artists!! so rock star by hannah montana was #4 which i just love! then every time you lie by demi at #6 and ready or not by bridgit mendler was #8! demi, miley and aly & aj and jonas brothers were top arists. ross lynch was also a top artist which is like all the austin & ally songs lol and i love the driver era which was in my top artists too! but it's fun to see what makes it every year!

Do you like Jim/Oluwande, the canon OFMD ship? Do you have no idea who those people are? Either way, maybe you're a fan of the trope called "the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one." Here are some published romance novels you might enjoy. Asterisk indicates there is not on-page sex.

Be aware that (as with Jim) this trope often involves bad experiences in one or both characters' pasts, so please take a look at content warnings, if you usually do. My messages & ask box are always open for any book questions! These are all books I really loved, and I recommend them with enthusiasm.

The Soldier's Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian - M/m romance between two gay men set in Regency England. Lots of gentle humor and a light mystery plot. This author has written this trope often.

Honey and Pepper by AJ Demas - M/m romance between two young gay men set in a fantasy world based on the ancient Mediterranean (specifically Rome, in this novel). The grumpy one is a little softer in this one than in some of the others.

*Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell - M/m romance between two men, with a sci-fi mystery adventure plot. Also features the arranged marriage and only one bed (tent) tropes. It's both very plotty and very romance-y.

*Magic in Manhattan series by Allie Therin - M/m romance between a gay man and a bi man, set in Prohibition-era NYC and other cities, with an urban fantasy action-adventure plot. Lots of fun. The first book does not end on a cliffhanger, but there's a continuing plot throughout the trilogy.

*The Heartbreak Handshake by JR Hart - M/nb romance set in a fictional contemporary town. Both characters are neurodivergent and asexual. The male character is much more cheerful than his love interest, a nonbinary crafter. Also features the fake dating trope (extremely clever title for it, too). Disclaimer: I beta-read this book. It stands alone and is only loosely linked to the other books in the series.

Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins - M/f (cishet) romance between a man and woman set in the Old West. This author is one of the greatest romance novelists, and she writes Black romance, mainly historical. The female character here is the grumpy one, an accomplished horse-tamer. The author writes this trope often. Night Hawk is the book of hers I usually see recommended, and I loved it too; it has a grumpy male lead and sunshine-y female lead.

Her Big City Neighbor by Jackie Lau - M/f (cishet) romance between a white woman and an Asian man set in contemporary Toronto. The man is the grumpy one and the woman is exceptionally cheerful. This author loves to write detailed food descriptions!

Proper English by KJ Charles - F/f romance between two women set in early 20th century England, with a murder mystery plot. Both characters have hidden depths, which is part of the romance, but I'd loosely categorize the book this way.

Shake Things Up by Skye Kilaen - Polyamorous romance, bi characters, contemporary setting (starts in Austin and the characters take a road trip to Colorado). One of the female leads is grumpy by nature, and both of her partners (m and f) are pretty sunshine-y. Disclaimer: I beta-read this book. This author has written this trope a few times as well.

I know this is niche one so here is the reasons why for each Bruin being what wrestler. This doesn’t have to do with appearances more character, entrance music and overall performance.

Charlie Coyle: John Cena is a classic good guy and also is from Mass

Jake DeBrusk: Scott Steiner, I know what your thinking who? Scott Steiner is famous for his math speech where he takes his 75% chance of winning and then adds his 66 2/3 per cents to get to him having a 141 2/3 chance of winning at sacrifice. All I know is that if I had to watch Jake do math it would go along the lines of this speech.

Nick Foligno: Stone Cold Steve Austin=bald and a badass, Nick Foligno= bald and a badass sometimes

Derek Forbort: Goldberg, Goldberg never loses he also makes dumb decisions. I’m now respect the epic highs of Forbort Hockey he never has lows now.

Trent Frederic: Mankind, most famous for doing crazy stunts like getting thrown off the top of the steel cage multiple times. This guy just keeps making bad decisions so he can fight which suits Trent

Brandon Carlo: Kevin Nash otherwise known as big daddy cool diesel, honestly I gave him this guy solely because his nickname.

Matt Grzelcyk: Rob Van Dam, small and agile guys. Also out of all the bruins the one I would pick to randomly appear in a syfy shark film like Van Dam has done would be Matt.

David Krejci: The Undertaker, a person that’s just been around a long time that is consistently good. Also I feel like Krejci would have a random motorbike phase like the undertaker did.

Charlie McAvoy: Randy Orton. He has a nickname that is the legend killer and the amount of veterans of seen McAvoy ass check to oblivion I feel like he earns that title.

David Pastrnak: Ric Flair, always had the most over the top beautiful robes just like pastas suits

Jeremy Swayman: Kurt Angle who is an Olympic gold medalist, famous for winning with a broken neck. The only American I could think of here with any type of Gold medal was Sway. Wait I just done research and he won Bronze, I’ll change my reasoning too that how he is getting treated now is the same as fans chanting ‘you suck’ in time with Kurt Angles entrance music

Pavel Zacha and Jakub Zboril: Edge and Christian. One of the best tag teams to exist, childhood friends like our two boys (not the tag team parts just the friendship part).

Hampus Lindholm: The million dollar man Ted DiBiase…..have you seen Lindholms contract?

Tomas Nosek: Rowdy Roddy Pipper, Nosek is one of the rowdiest players I’ve seen, he lives for the drama

Connor Clifton: Cactus Jack/ Mick Foley. This wrestler is also Mankind (see Freddy) but this is another one of his egos which is hardcore which suits Cliffy hockey.

Mike Reilly: Heath Slater, classic loser just a jobber. Mike was on my template so I had to find someone that suits my boy.

Craig Smith: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. Shawn Michaels is my all time favourite, his entrance music is sung by himself and is called sexy boy which suits Craig.

Brad Marchand: Chris Jericho, 2 Canadians that people hate

Linus Ullmark: The Big Show, solely for the entrance music which says that he is gonna give you a show.

Patrice Bergeron: Bret ‘the hit man’ Hart. Famously Hart has a quote that is ‘the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be’ which is how I would describe Bergy

AJ Greer: CM Punk, one of the best heels there is. And i feel like Greer just knows how to taunt like him

inspired by @burned-lariat‘s tier list, i’ve made my own:

(some notes: diane #1 always. i don’t watch enough quartermaine storylines, so AJ/edward/lila/emily are all kind of .. there based on very minimal memories. i put nikolas cassadine at the bottom based on marcus coloma’s portrayal; i remember liking the character when tyler christopher played him, but also i was a child so who knows what i’d think now. there are two roger howarth characters here, i think one is supposed to be franco and one is austin but i don’t care for either of them so both go in the bottom tier. growing up i always thought luke was a creepy weirdo even before i knew about how he raped laura. michelle strafford’s nina was one of my favorites and i don’t feel that same connection with cynthia watros and also i think sonny/nina is one of the dumbest things GH could do to the character. i despise most of the corinthos clan except for morgan,, morgan ily please come back)

WWE Theory: If not Cody, then who?

So Cody didn't win at Wrestlemania, it's been a week and it's all been soaked in.

While Cody may still get to 'Finish the Story', common criticism is that the moment has passed, and so winning it later is not going to feel as effective than had he won it at Wrestlemania.

But what if, Cody isn't the one?

It's a thing we must entertain now since Drew, Sami and Cody have each failed to take their chance when they were white hot and ready to hit the iron. But then you also have to ask who is left? So playing to this, here's 5 guys in WWE who I think could be a fitting usurper to the Tribal Chief.

To note, however, the Rock and Jey Uso are not on this list.

5 - Johnny Gargano

Gargano in the Main Roster has been a bit of a lame duck, part of which does feel like creative has nothing for him. But a slow build can bring Gargano back up to the same beloved status as he did in NXT - just like they did with Sami. Being the big babyface but also being backed by The Way and maybe even Ciampa would also provide some support against interference by the Bloodline. Johnny is fifth however for the key point that if Ciampa is fit, would they leave him to be Johnny's support? Not sure they would, if anything they could just be waiting to put DIY in the tag division, but Johnny could still get a title shot in between.

4 - AJ Styles

AJ is still inactive from a broken ankle, but he has the talent and the credentials to take Roman Reigns to the limit. Triple H does have a fondness for the Bullet Club too, since he's been trying to chase the Elite, Hikuleo, Jay White and Tama Tonga in the past few months to add to Balor, AJ, Gallows and Anderson. It does feel like Trips had ideas of doing Bullet Club vs Bloodline, and still could sell that but at a smaller-scale. Because of his status as a veteran wrestler who has been a world champion in multiple companies, AJ would be a solid choice to defeat Roman.

3 - GUNTHER

Rescued by Triple H's booking, GUNTHER has been on a tear as Intercontinental Champion, and the imposing Austrian would certainly be able to bring a believable level of power that could keep Roman on the back foot. With Imperium also warding off the Bloodline, GUNTHER has managed to gain the acclaim and respect of the fans in spite of being a heel, so his character wouldn't even need to shift in order to feud with Reigns. He has the titanic aura that can step up to Roman's Tribal Chief mystique, and if things go smooth enough he can become WWE's next 'big man' megastar with an endorsing win over Roman.

2 - Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins will always be a factor in Roman Reigns' title reigns, and vice versa. The two are bound by their shared history alone, but also by their contrasting styles and quickfire finishes. The key argument with Seth is that his challenge against Roman actually ended in a win - albeit by DQ - so Seth still has the psychological advantage over Roman. He's the 1 defense Roman didn't definitively win, and that will always be a lingering factor that could bite him.

1 - Big E

This one is gonna be a long shot, but sometimes things can line up perfectly. Big E is still tending to his broken neck, but upon his return there may be no greater a babyface than him who can stand up to Roman. Not only does Big E have the charisma to be backed by the fans, but he'd also have the comeback story, and similar energies that Austin and Angle will have carried with their own incidents of broken necks. Big E also has the in-ring prowess and power to compete in a hard-hitting affair against Roman, and the New Day's history with the Usos - and the Bloodline as a whole - provides enough backstory for Big E to be seen as a worthy challenger.

Plus E is owed a better run than his first world title reign, so I put him top because he's the unlikely hero but one everyone would get behind to win the world title.

Possibly Doing a "Begins" Series

So, I've kind of been obsessing over 9-1-1/9-1-1: Lone Star lately and think that it would be cool to do a "Begins" Series with characters from One Chicago and maybe The Resident, by using the information that we have gotten from the shows about them (after I finish all my other WIPs, but I actually wanna have them written ahead of time instead of writing as I go). I have an idea of how I want some of them to go, others are undecided as of right now and some I'm debating if I should do one for said character. But if you want to see a particular moment for a character that was canonically mentioned (ie Mouch and his dad sending letters when he was a child) let me know.
