Top Five Terry Funk Rivalries
Top Five Terry Funk Rivalries
Rob Faint We recently lost a true legend in Terry Funk. A former world champion. A hardcore legend. A true gentleman. Take a Bow, Nature Boy. You Deserve It!
Tumblr media
Ric Flair. The Nature Boy. The man whose name is synonymous with WCW and the battle cry, "WOOOO!" would step into the squared circle, one last time. The final match went down on July 31st, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee. I'll be honest, this was a match that caught a lot of wrestling fans off guard. I thought that Ric Flair was done once Shawn Michaels landed one of the most sympathetic finishers ever seen at Wrestlemania. Then, of course was the less than glamourous run with TNA Impact Wrestling, which felt like a forced replay of the late 90's version of WCW that nobody asked for. Then, this promo poster popped up on my social media feed.
Tumblr media
While I wasn't too enamored with the thought of seeing an old man, lace up his boots and go toe-to-toe one last time, I had second thoughts and said to myself, "Wait, this is Ric Flair we're talking about!"
One of the best grapplers in pro-wrestling & a true showman that influenced more than one generation of talent, such as Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett, Shawn Michaels, not to mention, his cultural influence on hip hop. Yes, you read that right, the kiss-stealin' wheelin'-dealin', son of a gun had the type of swag that couldn't be ignored in the hip hop community.
Tumblr media
It is safe to say, the hip hop community co-signs Ric Flair.
Tumblr media
Even more inspiring is his life story. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, with many sources indicating that he was a "black market" baby, he was adopted by two loving parents that later settled in Edina, Minnesota, where Ric Flair even attended college at the University of Minnesota. During his high school years, he participated in football, track and amateur style wrestling.
Ric Flair got his start by training to become a pro wrestler under the tutelage of Verne Gagne. He attended Gagne's first wrestling camp with Greg Gagne, "Jumpin'" Jim Brunzell, The Iron Sheik and Ken Patera at Gagne's barn outside Minneapolis in the winter of 1971. On December 10, 1972, he made his professional wrestling debut in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, battling George "Scrap Iron" Gadaski to a 10-minute draw.
From there, he went on to wrestle for AWA (American Wrestling Association), IWE (International Wrestling Enterprise), NWA (National Wrestling Alliance), All-Japan Pro Wrestling and of course, World Championship Wrestling (which was my first introduction to him as a kid) and of course, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). His is one of the most storied careers of all time.
I always wondered how'd he end up with the nickname, "The Nature Boy". Turns out this story goes back to 1974, when Flair left the AWA for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic region in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). On October 4, 1975, Flair's career nearly ended when he was in a serious plane crash in Wilmington, North Carolina. Flair broke his back in three places and was told by doctors that he would never wrestle again. He was only 26 years old. However, he refused to let that stop him.
Flair conducted a rigorous physical therapy schedule and returned to the ring just three months later, in January 1976. The crash did force Flair to alter his wrestling technique. He switched from the power brawling style he was known for to becoming a grappler, which led him to adopt the "Nature Boy" gimmick he would use throughout his career. However, Flair reached elite status when he began referring to himself as "The Nature Boy" in order to incite a 1978 feud with the original "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, who put Flair over in one encounter.
Now, we come to the night of July, 31st. The last hurrah for Ric Flair. While many were anticipating the main event, The rest of the undercard was just as exciting as well. All the wrestling legends were out to show support.
Tumblr media
It was great to see a living legend get his roses 🌹 one last time.
Tumblr media
Ric Flair has reportedly been offered to wrestle 10 more matches for 50K a piece. He turned it down saying, "this is my last one."
Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that Ric Flair’s Last Match drew more than 6,800 fans, a gate of $448,502 & between 20-25k streaming PPV Buys. This is the second highest independent wrestling gate of all time. - Yaz (All YAZ wrestling)
For Flair, it's all about going out on his terms. He wants to retire knowing, if he wanted to, he could still do it. I can respect that.
Tumblr media
It's about his legacy. A legacy that not only inspires, but a legacy that put all the doubters and haters to shame and silenced them. This is a legacy that truly doesn't know the meaning of the words, "Give up" or "I Quit!". This is the definition of overcoming adversity and defying the odds.
Tumblr media
Thank you, Nature Boy for all the great memories.
Take a bow, sir.

- Before the Blackcraft Wrestling Offer Match, the lights in the building went out, and when they came back on standing at the entrance curtain next to a crucifix was The Preacher. The Preacher had a large scar on his neck from when he had his throat slit four years earlier. The Preacher asked for a volunteer from the crowd to be sacrificed on the cross. A muscular fan with a head like a pumpkin walked toward the entrance, but rather than be willingly crucified, the fan charged toward the ring in the direction of Simon Grimm but was easily subdued by CORE officials Andy Harner and Aaron Arbo. The Preacher began to hammer his own left hand into the crucifix and then called on the wrestlers for a little help hammering a nail into his free hand. The Preacher laughed maniacally and the wound on his neck opened up and began to pour blood. The lights were flicked on and off and CORE officials called for a stop to this segment. Spider-Man took advantage of his role as a "monsterjack" by attacking The Posse during their Halloween Costume Lumberjack Tag Team Match against The Skimahorns. To even the odds, Gentleman Jervis stepped away from the commentary desk to confront Spider-Man about his interference. Spider-Man's attempted attack was quickly thwarted by "The World's Sweetest Man" as Gentleman Jervis dodged a strike and locked in the Modified Sleeper Hold. Living up to his moniker, Jervis tip-toed his way to the commentary desk to retrieve a pillow and blanket for the now sleeping Spider-Man. Gentleman Jervis tucked him in with a kiss on the forehead before returning to his commentary duties.

Jon Moxley had a great interview with alot of detail about AEW dealing with covid, his wwe exit and a few other things, someone on reddit wrote a great write up of it, and heres a direct link to it just so i can give credit, but heres the lot of it.
Past few days have been hectic at the Moxley household, Renee has been doing a photoshoot for her cookbook, there's food all over in the house, Moxley doing 5-6 trips to the supermarket and messaging Renee "What is a shallot?"
First two months of 2020 has been insane in terms of travelling going from Sapporo, Memphis, Cleveland, Osaka & Texas
2020 before the pandemic was gonna be insane with Dynamite every Wednesday, going to Europe (Yes AEW/UK Tour), Japan, Indie Shows, opponents outside of AEW & bringing the belt everywhere
Originally his contract with WWE was suppose to end in September 2018 but WWE added more months due to his injury which coincidently 3 weeks before Double or Nothing that's literally in Las Vegas where he currently resides
Tony Khan & Cody came to his house laying out the details of AEW (TNT/Booking) and was onboard for the ride
Currently has no deal with Japan, he originally had a deal set in place from June till WrestleKingdom (Original Plan for WK beat up Juice, young boy from the New Japan Dojo, out comes Karl Anderson stun guns Moxley) & was for that specific run. The situation now is a verbal deal they know he can't work Wednesdays due to Dynamite but when he is available in terms of scheduling he'll be down to wrestle in Japan
Actually wanted to do some work for New Japan, Rocky Romero called him up and was onboard
As talks progressed with New Japan, Rocky suggested "how about G-1? that would be sick", initially wasn't gonna do it, as the conversation ended 10 minutes later was down to do it
Prior to G-1 he wasn't in the best shape after he left WWE (only been wrestling 6-man tag team matches or 4minute matches), knowing that he'll be wrestling 20-30mins matches in Japan he called Gil Guardado (Strength & Conditioning Coach from Xtreme Couture) in preparation for the G-1 tournament he was put on a full Pro-MMA Fight Camp schedule 5 days a week, sometimes twice a day which later become beneficial when he wrestled Tomohiro Ishii
Last few months of WWE when it was public knowledge he was gonna leave, he was waiting for something bad to happen like a burial but that never happened and WWE gave him a sending off
Was initially worried if fans were gonna cheer or boo because of being in WWE for a long time
Has so much gratitude for the people that chanted MOX on that night of Double or Nothing
New Japan's vignette of Moxley was a stunt double, name death-rider came from the jacket that was found from goodwill
Covid/Renee Situation - apparently someone from Orlando had Covid, everyone got tested, came back negative, She flew back home, after 5-6 days se wasn't feeling the very best, couldn't get out of bed, eventually got the test, had people come over to their house to get the test via Insurance (Ready Responders), already pulled out of Dynamite taping in advance if anything happens, 36 hours later about 11pm-12am as they were about to go to bed, they received an email (Mox was negative & Renee positive), during the quarantine Mox slept on the couch during the time while she recovered and was fine afterwards
Moxley: "They've got a kajilion dollars and they couldn't afford a couple of tests?"
Had to pull out from another taping (Fyter Fest) due to the positive result from Renee but Taz made him feel better with the Sloppy Shop Line
His AEW Champion run feels meaningful from breaking out of the prison to the winning the championship, His WWE Championship run felt like an 'Emergency Situation' (Roman Reigns Wellness Policy), they needed someone to carry the company during the summertime mainevent Sumo Hall & MSG but felt hollow
While WWE champion he didn't get a new T-Shirt, was talking to the merchandise people, they were re-making shirts with different colours, "Why isn't there any new T-shirts?" says Mox, merchandise people reply "Dude we've sent 25 different designs to Hunter and he just keeps rejecting them all", "I'm freaking WWE champion give me a fucking t-shirt!"
Still hates scripted promos (the one thing he hated during his time in WWE, having writers write stuff for him), a runsheet/format for AEW would be 'Jon Moxley Promo 2 Minutes' not 48 pages
Moxley: Nothing is gonna change until one person is gone (VKM), has watched some of WWE during the pandemic and is kind of relieved he isn't still there "could you have imagine if it would be any good?"
Moxley thinks the thunderdome looked like zoom call and reminded him something from a particular part from the book 'Fahrenheit 451'
Moxley "I want WWE to be awesome but when they suck it pisses me off, they're the number 1 brand of wrestling to watch, they represent the sport and when there product is embarrassing to watch it makes all wrestling look bad, driving away fans from the sport that could be WWE/AEW fans"
First three opponents were random Hager (done in two hours), Brodie came out of no-where (originally was to have an opponent for Double or Nothing - wasn't disclosed who) and Brian Cage
Meltzer/Moxley agreed that Stadium Stampede was awesome, super entertaining and fun during a time when people were feeling miserable in a pandemic this was need to cheer people up
Meltzer/Garret talk NXT unopposed show's ratings, why didn't the female demographic increase while the male demographic increased? Moxley replies two words Jungle Boy
Moxley asks for Dave's opinion with the current situation WWE's ratings going down "If things don't change (VKM/booking/stories) is it possible AEW could overtake WWE as the most watched show in five years?" Dave believes short term AEW could beat Smackdown's 18-49 demographics (but not viewers) if they moved to Friday and prove to be more valuable to FOX, If WWE continue to go down this same route, the numbers will decrease whilst AEW's will increase, WWE will have to make changes quicker inside of five years

Shawn Michaels: The Showstopper Unreleased
Tumblr media
WWE has release a few Shawn Michaels DVDs over the years, but continuing on the theme of my last few wrestling-centered entries, WWE Home Video stuck with their “unreleased” brand of DVDs in 2018 with the three-disc release of Shawn Michaels: The Showstopper Unreleased (intro - I could not locate a trailer for this anywhere!). In that clip Shawn quips that the producers deserve an award for finding previously unreleased matches. I believe the criteria for this release is still similar to previous “Unreleased” collections where they may have aired on television (and thus likely in the WWE Network archives) or long discontinued VHS tapes, but this DVD will mark the first time the matches are available on disc. Also included is a new interview with Michaels that they broke up in several parts and sporadically inserted throughout the collection. The first disc is something special as it essentially is a “Best of Rockers” DVD. The first two matches are from Shawn’s rookie year in 1985 for Mid-South in quick enhancement matches for Hector & Chavo Guerrero and Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Matches serve their purpose, but it is nonetheless fascinating to see how Shawn had that already apparent potential in him way back in 1985. The remaining 11 matches on the first disc are all Rockers matches, with the first three tag matches being from their Midnight Rockers AWA days with two bouts against Doug Summers & Buddy Rose and one more with Brian Knobbs & Dennis “I’m not booked” Stamp. The two Summers & Rose matches are show-stealers that had exhilarating beginning/middle/end structures, and was fun to watch the 1980s crowd go nuts for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first disc is almost all AWA & WWF Rockers matches!! For the eight WWF Rockers matches, they consist of almost an all-star lineup of a golden age for WWF tag teams where they square off against the likes of Demolition, Brain Busters, Hart Foundation, Natural Disasters and Legion of Doom. The sad thing about The Rockers back then is that as charismatic and agile as they were back then, they mostly made other teams look good in their WWF run and that is the case here as they lose six of those eight WWF matches. Even worse is the two matches they win is a DQ win against the Rougeaus after Jimmy Hart’s megaphone is used, and a countout win against the Orient Express. That said, a lot of the other matches are pretty damn good, with high honors going to the Brain Busters bout, two Demolition matches and surprisingly working in a lot of good stuff against Legion of Doom. Worth pointing out is another good match against the Hart Foundation where it seems noticeable the teams missed their cue to go home because the match starts to feel there is no end in sight when out of nowhere during an abdominal stretch a bunch of wrestlers run in and an awkward impromptu brawl ensues and the match is declared a draw.
Tumblr media
Disc two has 12 matches from Shawn’s first singles WWF run from 1992-1998. Some highlights from this are an unsurprising technical showcase with Mr. Perfect, oddly having a positive dynamic with Bret Hart to team up against the Blu Brothers in 1995 and predictable-yet-high quality formula matches during his first WWF Title run against 1-2-3 Kid and Steve Austin. Disc two has a disappointing triple tag elimination match with Shawn, Diesel and Undertaker against Psycho Sid, Tatanka and Kama filled with lots of stalling and headscratching booking for the eliminations. There is also a questionable match against Vader a month after their controversial-yet-excellent Summerslam match, where in this match Shawn takes 95% of the offense and quickly squashes Vader in three minutes. There is also a fascinating bout against Yokozuna from the summer of 1996 in Kuwait, when Yoko is nearing the end of his WWF run due to him putting on excess weight, and the match kind of expectedly plods along, until something must have clicked for Shawn to motivate Yoko into a pretty watchable match in the back half, and the two show respect afterwards which was awesome to see….until Yoko suddenly darts off to the back like he really has to go to the bathroom. The third disc consists of 10 matches from Shawn’s return run to WWE from 2002-2010. All the matches here are from RAW, so that means they follow the formula that still holds true for WWE TV main events today where it is either a cobbled together tag match, or a really good one-on-one match with interference or a hokey finish. There are a couple exceptions with worthwhile clean matches against Ric Flair during a Japan 2005 tour and against Christian in 2004 when he was building momentum with Tyson Tomko by his side. HBK’s matches against Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho are the highlights on disc three, but all three contests have varying degrees of interference to effect the finishes, and in some cases it actually benefits the match as is the case with Angle with the story they were telling. I was delighted to see a post-RAW dark match included with Shawn teaming with Batista against Triple H and Edge. WWE is notorious for usually doing a fun untelevised promo or bonus match for the fans after the cameras go off the air with some quirky moments that would never fly in a televised match. That is the case here with Triple H doing lots of exaggerated selling and fun jawing with the crowd that absolutely ate it all up for a fun time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shawn didn't disappoint in his 21st century run, with matches included here that don't disappoint against Ric Flair and Kurt Angle. A couple of promos are uncovered like Shawn doing an open Q&A with the fans when Sensational Sherri was managing Michaels early in his singles run. Another amusing bonus promo is Shawn and Diesel doing a Times Square workout session to hype up their upcoming WrestleMania 11 match with the one-and-only Todd Pentigill hosting. The several interview clips inserted throughout the DVDs has Shawn hitting on certain parts on where he was at that stage in his career and reflecting on the infamous Barber Shop break-up with Marty, his 2002 return, rebooting a less edgy, more goofball version of DX in 2006 and retiring in 2010 (this was filmed before his ill-fated Saudi Arabia return match). From these series of introspections, it was fascinating to hear Shawn think back on why he was not all-in for teaming with Jose Lathario in his WWE Title run, and hearing him settling on being a family man in retirement and turning down multiple
Tumblr media
WrestleMania return matches. There are also a few sets of interviews with NXT talent commenting on how lucky they are to have Shawn as a teacher at the WWE Performance Center. Shawn comments a few times here too on being proud of passing on his knowledge, and it is obvious he is genuine on his passion for his new role building talent in NXT. WWE has once again amassed another recommended collection of un-vaulted matches. I am digging this format following the Piper and Macho Man sets where they break up the action every few matches with a set of interviews. Wort mentioning is about a quarter of the 35 matches here have no commentary because they were either dark matches, or from arena shows WWE use to film at regionally in the 80s and 90s and never recorded commentary for and/or lost the rights for the commentary. While there are some skippable matches, the good-to-bad ratio is largely in the positive here, and the not-so-good bouts usually at least have an entertaining backstory or era they emanate from. This all adds up for Shawn Michaels: The Showstopper Unreleased being another must-have installment of the Unreleased branding. The Raiders found another possible momentum swing early in the second half. "It wasn't our best game. And none of that need be surprising to me.. This year, though, has been a struggle, with 12 year veteran Matt Prater of the Lions the only specialist whose season has become a story. Third seeded Cowboys (36 18) won their third tournament title overall and their second in three years. When you play into May, there is no time off.". "They new jordan shoes all found out how resilient they all were with the challenges that come from such a tournament. UNLV beat No. Perhaps the most "miraculous" of all of the extraordinary endings. "Then it turned into I wanted to be there for my team.". Consequently, your teacher is sure to have made many mistakes of his or her own because he/she is just as human as anybody else. Sabu [1995]
Professional wrestling has seen its share of mad men, but when The Sheik hit the ring in the 1970s, fans began wondering if the rumors of wrestling being “fixed” could be possible. After all, The Sheik was attacking fellow wrestlers with pencils and would send nearby fans running when he darted his eyes in their direction. The Sheik’s intensity would continue when his nephew began wrestling in 1985. Trained by his uncle, Sabu began wrestling in Memphis, Michigan, Ohio, Canada and Hawaii. It wasn’t until the early 1990s that he would gain national recognition, gaining no small amount scars in blood battles while wrestling in Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling in Japan and Extreme Championship Wrestling in the USA. Sabu’s crazed eyes and wicked demeanor made for an excellent spread in any magazine, with scars covering most of his exposed skin and often times, blood spewing from his body. Sabu was an instant attraction to anyone who got a look at him, eventually making his way to the WWE in the mid-2000s.
