La Chakana
The Crux, commonly referred to as the Southern Cross, is the smallest and most definitive constellation of the Southern Hemisphere. A group of four main stars, the constellation may be used to find the cardinal points. Such importance is reflected in the multiple representation of the Crux, including the Australian, Brazilian, New Zealander, and Mercosur flags. This prominence is reflected in Andean culture, where the four points of the Crux are apparent in one of the region’s prevalent symbols, the Chakana.
Originating from chakay, meaning "to cross" in Quechua, the chakana is rooted in its astrological beginnings, but its significance is more extensive. Corresponding to Incan mythology, the cross incorporates the three Incan tiers: Uqhu Pacha, underworld of death, Kay Pacha, world of the living, and Hanan Pacha, celestial world of the gods. These tiers may also be redefined as: underground, earth, and sky; snake, puma, and condor among the sacred animals of the Inca; or village, Sapa Inca, and temple for dividing the Incan harvest.
The four arms of the chakana equate to the cardinal points, or may designate the four provinces of Tawantinsuyu, while the circle represents Qosqo and the circle of life. The twelve peripheral points mark the months in a year. The lines which run vertically through the symbol represent interconnectivity between the worlds while horizontal lines are the bonds which unite those within each world.
The frequency and popularity of the chakana in Andean art and society from antiquity to modern day is a testament to the symbol’s broad significance.

What do you do when you're stuck in a foreign country with your friends? Get matching tattoos!! The stepped cross with four corners, ridged with three steps each is called the Inca cross or “Chacana”. The Chakana symbolizes the dynamic between the universe and the life it contains. The Inca believed that the Chakana was a bridge between the three worlds - the world of the gods, the physical realm of man, and the spiritual realm. I chose the Inca tattoo for my deep spirituality and connection to God and the universe, as a symbol of my love for my mother, whose name is Inca, and as a constant reminder of this epic trip to Peru with my friends - a trip in which I pushed myself beyond limitations I didn't think I was capable of surpassing. My first tattoo and I LOVEEEE it! Muchas gracias @luque.skywalker!!! unveiling my take on the quariwarmi* flag!
edit: my sincere thanks to @ayachaska for the helpful feedback!
Quariwarmi is typically spelled this way when translated, but our languages don’t use the QU sound. Some people spell it qhariwarmi, and there are variations, I use qariwarmi.
Tumblr media
Qariwarmi + Tinkuy Flag
please DO NOT USE MY DESIGN TO FURTHER YOUR PRODUCTS IF YOU ARE NOT QARIWARMI URSELF. ahem,
I have designed this one in the vein of a sunrise, or a dawn. As qariwarmi were historically entrusted with bringing about the dawning of new days, and with it, the watering of fields. It could be likened to the Paqari / dawn version of a flag.
EDIT: This was made possible with input from fellow qariwarmi people. Thank you, paylla!!!
It follows a tricolor pattern: sky blue, sunny yellow, and a peachy orange shade. They represent Hanaq Pacha , Kay Pacha, and Uku Pacha.
Symmetrical symbols as follows,
ONE : CHAKANA , gray to black in the center.
TWO : CONDOR FEATHERS , representing the messenger of the heavens.
THREE: EYES OF THE GREAT CHUQUI CHINCHAY , shining down from that liminal dwelling within kay pacha. it’s eyes are silver with copper pupils and gold stars twinkling, a nod to Chuqui Chinchay’s multi-gendered nature.
FOUR : THE WRITHING MACH’AQWAY based off watapuñuq (the boa), dweller of uku pacha and subterranean land.
It is an identity spanning from the convergence of two rivers, the Mosna and the Huanchesca at the sacred site known today as Chavín de Huantar / Chawpin Wantar.
I really don’t feel the need to explain the complexities with this identity, but you should know that it is an identity that originated within the Quechua language, and belongs to people in the Andes who are native to the region. However, it is not just a Quechua identity and has applications for other language speaking groups as long as they are in the Andes.
Tinkuy people, this is yours to use as well, just y’know credit me, pretty please.

Flag of the Inca Empire
Tumblr media
This is the flag of the Inca Empire. It comes from a world where the Inca were able to defeat Pizarro and his troops, and resisted Spanish conquest. The naturally mountainous terrain of the Andes helped give the Inca a considerable boost in self-defense against other European powers. The Inca played the various European powers off of each other to preserve their independence. The Inca initially considered a policy of isolationism, but this would prove untenable. Though, initially, the Inca limited their interactions with the Europeans as much as possible.
As time went on, the Inca began to study and replicate European technology and ideas. The first major change being the introduction of gunpowder weaponry, and the establishment of permeant standing army. The Inca also established a formal written language; with its alphabet largely based on the Latin Alphabet, but with some unique flourishes. The Inca had been ravaged by smallpox, and other Europeans diseases, though not quite to the extent they were in our world. Naturally, the Inca sought out the vaccine for smallpox as soon as it became available in the 18th Century.  The 19th Century saw the next major wave of reforms. The Incan government reformed into a parliamentary democracy, with limits set on the Sapa Inca’s powers. The first stages of industrialization also began at this time. The Inca adopted Western styles of clothing, but mixed in their own designs and color choices. Indeed, to this day, the Incan clothing is known for its unique mix of Western and Indigenous designs. However, more traditional style clothing can be found at important events, such as major religious festivals, or the crowning of a new Sapa Inca.   Today, the Inca Empire is a prosperous modern nation. Cusco, the nation capital, is a true global city. It is home to several universities, museums and art galleries, restaurants, and temples that are the envy of the world. The Quechua people are the largest ethnic group within the empire. However, the empire is home to many other ethnic groups including, among others, Aymara, Mapuche, Wayuu, Het, Polynesians, and even Amazonian tribes. The Inca Empire also receives many immigrants from around the world.   Incan citizens enjoy a very generous social safety net. Government-funded healthcare is provided to all citizens, though private insurance also exists. The Department of Employment provides jobs to all citizens who find themselves unemployed. In the event that a citizen cannot fulfill any available jobs, they are instead given a welfare payment until new jobs become available. The Department of Culture helps provide funding for the arts. Some citizens, of course, cannot attend performances of the arts due to their financial circumstances. In this case, they can apply for free vouchers from the Department of Culture. This all means that most Inca citizens have fairly high taxes, but most consider the trade-off worth it.   The flag includes a stylized depiction of the sun god Inti. The Inca still largely follow their traditional religion; though secularism is on the rise. The blue symbolizes how the same blue sky stretches over all parts of the empire. In the corners of the flag are four chakana; a common geometric shape found in art across various Andes Civilizations. They are in the four corners of the flag in reference to the Inca Empire’s official name, Tawantinsuyu, which means Land of the Four Corners.

COLONIAL KERO | lacquered glass with a flat base and flared sides. The piece is carved in wood and has various figures, in which the character of the Inca stands out with all his clothing, and the Andean cross (chakana), as well as flowers in the surroundings.
This archaeological piece is the clear example of cultural syncretism between the Andean and the Hispanic.

ooh curious what u might think, but i’m thinking of getting a tattoo for the first time, and i was wondering if you have any tips??
i’m super indecisive about what kind of tattoo i should get though…
might go with a tumi… !!
Tumi is a great choice ! I’d also say maybe an animal ? Or chakana ?
For me I see tattoos as like wards or reminders on the body so if there’s something you want to be specifically reminded of ?

the broken circle commentary
a lovely episode with a lot of christine content. i was fed and i'm still shaking with excitement.
(1) archeological medicine fellowship on vulcan
interesting! this is the second time we get an archeological medicine reference for christine, the first one we got was in memento mori when they couldn't power up the surgery bays and her specific knowledge was required:
If I recall, you have an interest in archeological medicine.
archeological medicine is also, if you recall, the field dominated by rog*r kirby, who will one day be christine's fiancee. he was a human, top of his field. is it possible this is how we're gonna get into writing him into this story? i think so! my current canon already has them as exes who will one day get back together and get engaged, but i'm open to re-interpreting it depending on what the show presents.
i'm very glad for this mention though, regardless of the connection with her past or her future. i've really become attached to christine as an academic, an expert in her field. so to see her continuing with her studies, being curious and going beyond what starfleet has to offer?? this is all i've wanted, and what i've been building here for a year. christine is someone who eventually falls in love with starfleet, but her first love is science. i'm really happy to see her going for something like this!
i just love it when we get her working! like in the middle of the episode -- the second christine learns there are people injured on the planet, she jumps to help them. its these things which show what sort of person, what sort of professional she is.
another interesting tidbit here is that m'benga says that he'll need to replace her, which is interesting, considering she is technically not a member of the crew but part of an exchange program. they should have a plan in place to replace her already when her contract expires?? though, i did love this little moment, christine smiling at m'benga and telling him he's not getting rid of her so easily. their banter this episode, how comfortable they are with each other, their shared trauma, was a highlight. which brings me to item 2
(2) the m'benga connection / the klingon war
now, in episode one of the first season, there was an exchange that never made a lot of sense. somehow, despite the fact christine is part of the exchange program, she already had some inside jokes / name of moves which she shared with erica and m'benga. i envisioned those jokes coming from a sort of training period she went through, but now we learned that christine was involved in the klingon war.
canonically, enterprise was kept out of it. however, we already know that erica participated, and now so did m'benga and christine. they must have served together.
so, here i have two theories as to what christine was doing there:
if she was already a nurse, she could have signed up temporarily for starfleet and worked with m'benga on the moon [ this would make a lot of logical sense during the war ];
if she wasn't, and i'm kind of hoping this wasn't the case, she could have signed up as a scientist of bio-research (her field according to tos), and an expert in genetics and epi-genetics. that serum which m'benga and christine took during the episode, could have been her concoction. something she made at the behest of starfleet to make starfleet officers stronger for 1x1 battles with klingons.
i'm warming up to the idea of christine participating in the war. it gives her an edge i didn't anticipate.
also, the line about the war... i'm still processing the trauma of it all (so is m'benga it seems)
Years ago I was stationed on the moon of J'gal. Now I know you are lying. If you had served on J'gal, you'd be dead. Do you know that after the battle of ChaKana, there was so much blood in the air the rain turned red?
at any rate, i'm obsessed with her and m'benga this episode. they were such a competent, clever duo. they were great in the scenes where they were working together, absolutely adorable when they saw oriana again, and their fighting scenes? oof. also, when she called him joseph to get him to stop hurting that klingon when she always uses doc or m'benga? it was a very nice touch.
moment with oriana
tho, my favorite lines were: i know this is a terrible yeah. yeah it is, let's get to it then. and the already iconic: we've gotten out of worse. no, not really.
this episode was really great at demonstrating christine's humor, especially when she is in a tough spot. she always her a little dry remark to offer, something funny to say, a way to make the situation feel a little better, to make someone else feel better, even if that's not what she is feeling.
in the beginning of the episode, we see her flash a great big smile at m'benga and tease him, but the second she turns around, her smile immediately drops.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also, side note, i'm gonna have some words with whoever forgot to BRUSH HER FUCKING WIG BEFORE THIS EPISODE WHAT WAS UP WITH IT ALL EPISODE, IT WAS SO DISTRACTING
anyways, christine, a warm ball of sunlight in everyone's lives, who always has a clever quip to offer and something clever to say, so lovely and nurturing but hiding her own pain?? here for that!!
(3) protective christine
a little moment that i'm completely obsessed with is how christine moves to stand in front of oriana's family when the klingons point guns at them??
Tumblr media
honestly, the whole scene around oriana was so lovely. the way she kept touching oriana and her family to reassure them, these small little touches to their hands, arms and backs (she did that too with m'benga), that just show what a tactile person she is. how she finds ways to connect with people. it was such a nice touch.
though, the most important touch to me, was, of course, christine touching spock's face after he brought her back to life. the fact that the first thing she does is find a way to touch him, his face, WIPE AWAY HIS TEAR, is again more of the show showing us how giving and loving she is, that's her core straight, the first thing she does. but the fact that she quickly follows it up with a little quip (that has a sexual innuendo?) she just died! literally! and she is trying to make the situation not as serious as it is.
miss chapel you seriously need therapy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways i'm obsessed with this moment, no one talk to me.
which brings me to the final point i wanted to talk about
(4) the spapel of it all
well, to those who don't like the ship... sorry, you really couldn't watch the episode, huh? cause the show really doubled down on showing not just how christine feels about him, but how spock feels about her. from his heartbeat increasing from her just entering a room, to him confessing that she is his first love at the end of the episode, we got christine and spock dealing with their feelings for each other. she is clearly a little more wary this season after the whole thing with t'pring. still willing to flirt and share little moments with him ( vulcans can surprise you ), but keeping some sort of distance it seemed?
there is definetly more here, and i really liked it. it gives us more insight as to why she was so in love with him later on, and i like seeing christine deal with her feelings! no notes here, just vibes and joy.
things i'm worried about: the serum. in general, that's a storyline i can see going very badly (i already didn't like how violent they made m'benga), but so far, when it comes to christine, the show has not let me down yet, so i'm very excited to see what they do with it, and explain her past. i'm also kind of worried that this will be another season where christine doesn't get to hang out with a lot of women. i know there is an episode where she gets scenes with erica and uhura (at least two with uhura), but i'm hoping we get more of her side-by-side with someone else. while i love the m'benga and christine dynamic and thought it was some of the best work the show has done so far, i wanna see christine interacting with people that aren't spock and m'benga. things i'm excited about: literally everything things in my canon that i might need to throw out: my entire education timeline (though i think i can maintain the whole christine is not properly starfleet)
