This song is about a relationship that may or may not have been supposed to happen. The two appear to be different but are actually quite the same. Notice the juxtaposition in the title of the phrase being ‘alone together’ so, in fact, the two are not alone. Pete has been known to mention in concert how no matter how lonely we get, music will always be there for us. “Alone Together” was released as the band’s third overall single from Save Rock and Roll and was later certified platinum by the RIAA.

“God Only Knows” is a song by American rock band The Beach Boys. It is the eighth track on the group’s 11th studio album, Pet Sounds, and one of their most widely recognized songs. “God Only Knows” was composed and produced by Brian Wilson. Tony Asher helped Brian with the lyrics. Carl Wilson sang lead, and Bruce Johnston sang harmony vocals with Brian in the outro. The song broke new ground in many ways. It was one of the first commercial songs to use the word ‘God’ in its title. We're already halfway through this series on classic records from the first wave of shoegaze in the 90s. Likewise, it was only a matter of time until I decided to hone in on any of the "Big 3" with one of these pieces.

For the uninitiated, shoegaze fans have long recognized a trio of bands all coming from the Creation Records label that are considered either the greatest, most formative, or most influential bands of the subgenre. Those bands are (usually in this order), My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride.

In practice, this label is contentious. The so-called "Big 3" represents a general consensus within the community, but do not mistake it for gospel. Plenty of folks disagree on these bands, and often argue in favour of replacing at least one of them with a supposedly more deserving band (though My Bloody Valentine's place at the top of the shoegaze canon is virtually undisputed).

We'll get into my own personal opinions about the validity of this concept shortly. But for now, let's take a closer look at the band I'll be reviewing today. Let's talk about Ride.

The Band

Ride was formed in 1988 in Oxford, arriving onto the scene as one of the early comers, just after Lush and Pale Saints.

The original lineup was (and continues to be) Laurence "Loz" Colbert on drums, Steve Queralt on bass, Andy Bell on guitar and vocals, and Mark Gardener also on guitar and vocals, with his signature messy medium length hair and soft pretty boy features that was no doubt the platonic ideal of what the male shoegazer looked like in the 90s. Seriously, the man was a twink icon, just look at him.

AHEM, moving along.

Ride are probably the quintessential early 90s U.K. rock band. They represent the clearest through line between the baggy "Madchester" scene of the late 80s, the emerging sound of what would soon come to be known as britpop, and of course shoegaze itself, which is the genre label that people still associate most with this band. You can definitely hear a lot of Stone Roses in the band's sound in particular.

Ride was also arguably the first wave's greatest commercial success. They were basically the darlings of the Creation Records label, at least until Oasis came around and changed everything (for the worse). Their rise to indie fame was likely the most pronounced at the time, and this record in particular is one of only two shoegaze records to be certified Gold by the BPI (I'll let you guess the other one).

The key to Ride's success was likely in the band's very immediate sound compared to other shoegaze bands (plus being in the right place at the right time). They were more uptempo and LOUD, with keen pop melodies and a generally bombastic sound that lends itself to absolutely tearing up live shows.

I imagine that a good chunk of the fans of Ride in the 90s were people who had little to no investment in the emerging shoegazing scene, and would probably go on to be much bigger fans of bands like Blur and Radiohead than the likes of, say, Curve or Flying Saucer Attack.

If you've been following this series since I started than you've already read this a dozen times now so I'll do the sparknotes version: Yadda yadda dropped a few EPs in 1990 yadda yadda debut record the same year. But let's discuss that debut briefly.

Ride's 1990 LP Nowhere was a shoegaze record that harnessed the chaotic energy of the broader early 90s alternative rock movement. The album fuses little bits of neo-psychedelia, indie pop, and noise pop with a very solid foundation of constant shoegaze brick walling blasting against the backdrop, refusing to let up. It's a roller coaster ride (hehe) from start to finish.

It is Nowhere that's most often cited when discussing a "holy trinity" of records by the "Big 3", along with Loveless and Souvlaki.

I suppose now is a good time to say that personally, while I really enjoy the record, I don't really think it holds a candle to the other two canonized records. And I know I'm not alone in this. In fact, my opinion is largely reflected by the general trend in online circles over the last decade, wherein Ride's place in the 90s shoegaze rankings has slowly fallen to the definite third place spot.

Where Ride were arguably the most commercially successful shoegazers at the time, and second in critical acclaim only to My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive's re-appraisal in the 21st century has been overwhelmingly more favourable, while Ride has lost some of their relevance to the younger shoegazers of today.

There could be many reasons for this. Some argue that Ride's discography sounds a lot more dated, and/or hasn't aged well. Personally, I love the "dated" sound of early 90s U.K. indie; nothing wrong with being an era-defining record if it's a good era. That being said, I just think it comes down to MBV and Slowdive both having a larger catalogue of what is consistently brilliant music to my ears.

I do have my own alternative choice for third member of the Big 3 in my personal canon, which you'll soon find out about at the end of this series, but for now I digress.

I don't want you to come away from this review thinking I hate Ride or that you shouldn't listen to them. Many folks still love this band, and I am definitely a casual fan myself, so let's cut the crap and talk about what I like about their sophomore record.

The Record

Going Blank Again is a slightly more palatable and expanded version of the Ride that can be heard on their early EPs and debut LP. It's a hardened blend of smothering shoegaze and anthemic alternative rock riffs making it perfect for blasting out of car stereos while flying down desert highways. Like Split, this was also a transition record for the band's sound before britpop took over the British airwaves.

Firstly, I want to say that I chose reviewing Going Blank Again over Nowhere for a few reasons. Both records have their strengths and weaknesses; Nowhere packs more punch with less filler, while Going Blank Again has more versatility and arguably better songcraft, though "Seagull" remains as my favourite Ride song.

But my main reason for choosing Going Blank Again is that Nowhere already receives most of the love and attention. It's also not lost on me that I've pretty much only written about debut records for the series so far, so naturally I've been wanting to write about another sophomore LP. If I'm being honest though, Ride's first two LPs are roughly neck and neck, my preference depending on the day more than anything else.

The record bursts open with the simply gorgeous "Leave Them All Behind", a massive song that largely encapsulates everything Ride excels at: cool, massive hooks, loud guitar walls, blissful disengagement, and the sense of standing atop a really giant hill and being carried away by a gust of wind. This is how you should start your 90s alt rock record.

"Twisterella" is pure jangly, early britpop goodness. It's what Oasis would sound like if they were a better band. A completely sugary, dizzying riff that I never get tired of.

"Chrome Waves" is a chill baggy track with windswept string pads and Andy and Mark's signature melodic "ahhs" creating a bed of breeziness in the backing vocals. Very mellow vibes. And drums are a big standout on this track, kudos to Loz.

The LP finishes off with "OX4", a warm shoegazing ode to the band's hometown of Oxford. I'm actually reminded of Kiss Me era Cure, what with the bright, bittersweet synthesizer melody and dreamy feel-good essence of it all.

Again, there's a little more of what I'd consider filler on here than Nowhere, and it's definitely front-loaded. But for what it's worth, this was definitely one of the most celebrated shoegaze records of the first wave, and it's not hard to see why with its clear crossover appeal and hooks upon hooks. I think we could all stand to go a little blank again sometimes (just full of crap puns today).

What Came After That?

Ride alienated their fanbase.

No really. After this LP, Ride made the full switch and put out two britpop records, including the very lukewarm reception of Carnival of Light and the openly disdained Tarantula. Most britpop really isn't my bag, so I've yet to check out either of these projects, and their reputations sure aren't helping to convince me otherwise. The band doesn't even really seem to like that fourth record.

Ride disbanded in 1996 after having had a pretty good run as the top superstars of their somewhat niche scene.

Like Drop Nineteens, Slowdive, and MBV, the band got back together some time from the 2010s onward. The original members have been going strong, becoming the most prolific of the 90s shoegaze veterans in the 21st century, with two new records since they reunited, and a third one slated to come out some time in the next year.

I checked out the first record of their reunion 2017's Weather Diaries, while working on these reviews, and I gotta say that I have mad respect for the band sounding that energized after all these years.

Ride are shoegaze legends, and regardless of whether they're Big 3 material in my own personal canon, their significant role in spreading the popularity of shoegaze and solidifying its legacy in the 90s as a movement that mattered is more than enough reason for you to check them out. So, ya know, do it already if you haven't.

Occasionally, he breaks character and expresses genuine anger in plain language because he's too upset to dress it up in anything surreal. British duo set new record 2-up on a motorcycle

Engineering genius Allen Millyard and TV presenter Henry Cole have set a new world record for the “fastest tandem motorcycle” beating the top speed held by an American couple for over 10 years. Guinness World Records certified their top speed of 183.50 mph (295.31 km/h), giving them a clear margin over American couple Erin Hunter and Andy Sills, who reached 181.42 mph (291.98 km/h) at Bonneville Salt Flats in 2011. The pair met when Cole was filming The Motorbike Show in 2014 and the idea for the record attempt was hatched during planning for the latest series. On 25th May they headed to Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire, which has a 3000-metre long runway. On their sixth and last attempt of the day, the friends finally bettered the existing record speed by two miles an hour. What makes their achievement even more remarkable is that their motorcycle was designed and built by Allen in the single car garage attached to his house. Ironically their biggest challenge was avoiding going too fast. The Millyard Viper V10 is powered by an 8-litre Dodge sports car engine, producing 500 bhp, which is more than double the power of a modern superbike. It is also three times as heavy, at almost 1400 lb (630 kg), so keeping it under control, particularly without a fairing to protect them from wind blast, required huge focus, skill and determination. “It felt ridiculously fast” says Allen. “Top marks to Henry for agreeing to do it. He showed complete confidence in my riding ability and my hand-built motorcycle, which is really flattering. 2018 - Ed King

American musician Ed King died in his Nashville, Tennessee, home at 68 years of age. He was a guitarist for the psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock and guitarist and bassist for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1996.

2016 - Prince

It was reported that pills seized from the home of Prince contained the dangerously powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl but were mislabelled. Officials investigating the artist's death said the pills were labelled as hydrocodone, a weaker type of opioid. Autopsy results released in June revealed Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

2014 - John Lennon

John Lennon's killer, 59-year-old Mark David Chapman, was denied parole by New York State officials for the eighth time. In handing down their decision, the parole board said, "Your release would be incompatible with the welfare of society and would so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law."

1979 - Led Zeppelin

In Through the Out Door was released in the US, Led Zeppelin's last album while all four members were alive. 'Fool in the Rain' was released as a single in the US. In Through The Out Door has now been certified 6 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 6 million copies.

1970 - David Gates

Bread went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Make It With You', the group's only No.1 hit, which was a No.5 in the UK. Many artists have covered the song including: The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Dusty Springfield, Andy Williams, and Marc Cohn.

1970 - Creedance Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival started a nine-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with their fifth studio album Cosmo's Factory. The name of the album comes from the warehouse in Berkeley where the band rehearsed. Bandleader John Fogerty was so insistent on practicing (nearly every day) that drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford began referring to the place as "the factory".

1967 - Jimi Hendrix

The Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared on the UK BBC TV Simon Dee show. Kiki Dee and Cat Stevens were also guests on the show.

1966 - The Beatles

New York City teenagers Carol Hopkins and Susan Richmond climbed out onto the ledge on the second floor of a city hotel and threatened to jump unless they could get to meet The Beatles. Police talked then down.

1956 - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley began working on his first movie, Love Me Tender. In the drama that was set during and just after the Civil War, Elvis played Clint Reno, the youngest of four brothers. The original title for the movie was The Reno Brothers, but was changed to take advantage of the 'Love Me Tender' song recorded for the film.

One of my many :-) presents to myself was one of the new Wacom Intuos 3 tabletsapart from looking really cool, they have addressed the problem of not having a scroll wheel on a pen by introducing a slide strip and buttons on both sides of the tablet. except Allplan.!īirthday - Well, it has been a week of celebrations for my 50th Birthday (2/10). Wouldn't it be nice if they finally updated the leader line tool so that it had an arrow at the end - but I bet they won't! To be able to create leader lines with a little arrow at the end to point notes at locations on the drawing is one of the fundamental time-savers in all CAD systems. A completely revised Dimension module, modernised text editor and a generally more 'Windows' look to everything are being mentioned but we will have to wait for an English 'What's new in v2005' to appear sometime in the New Year to be certain what is included. in fact it worked better in v2003! It also looks as though cills might be available to window openings. At present in v2004.0b4 this is not working properly. returns in cavity walls as they are known here in the UK). Nice to see that there are recent certified Allplan drivers for the Nvidia Quadro range of cards on the Nvidia driver download site.Īllplan v2005 - Some details are emerging of the likely new features in Allplan v2005. (The FX4000 is just out but is too expensive to justify even for 3D CAD use at the moment). Incidentally I am using a PNY Quadro FX2000 graphics card with dual DVI outputs to drive the 2 monitors.Īnother bargain at the moment is the FX3000 card from Andy Hankins at - that arrives tomorrow and should be even faster than the FX2000. It works extremely well, but for day-to-day use it is more comfortable to just use the Cintiq on it's own - you can pull it off the desk and onto your lap :-) You then need to recalibrate the Wacom and so the pen only works within the tablet screen and you must use the mouse to access the top screen. You can then save the window layout in Allplan.

To do this with Allplan you need to stretch the top of the main window up into the 'upper' monitor - here I put the animation window and created some elevation and plan windows on the Cintiq. Just for fun I set it up in a dual monitor configuration. Running Plandesign on it is nice, but using it with Allplan is fantastic - so natural to be looking down at your work. In the meantime I was lucky to find a Wacom dealer in London (brilliant service btw) who still has a couple of these fantastic electronic 'drawing boards' at less than the original price. There is a new model coming out in February 2005 from Wacom I am told, but no-one has any information on the specification. Wacom Cintiq 18sx - Wacom have apparently discontinued the 18sx monitor/tablet (which I think is the same device that Nemetschek have been selling as the D-board along with their elegant Plandesign software).

Tommy Emmanuel at Speaker JoAnn Davidson Theatre, Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 6, 2021

Tommy Emmanuel played a drum solo at his Oct. 6 concert in Columbus.

This would be unremarkable except for the fact that, A) Emmanuel is an acoustic guitarist and, B) Emmanuel played only acoustic guitars - four to be precise - at his Oct. 6 concert in Columbus.

Yet, there he was, bashing out syncopated percussion licks on the body of his guitar, using a pick to scape the worn finish and occasionally bashing the thing - and his live mic - with a brush to create the aural imagery of a full drum kit.

That’s much like the way Emmanuel - dubbed a certified guitar player by Chet Akins - approaches the more traditional side of his instrument. Though he is but one musician, Emmanuel sounds like a band as he fingerpicks, slaps, chords, wallops, hammers on, pulls off and executes tricks most guitarists can only hope to dream of, let alone play.

For his Beatles medley, Emmanuel reeled off and segued between portions of “She’s a Woman,” “Please Please Me,” “Day Tripper” and “Lady Madonna” to the delight of the masked, two-thirds-full house at Speaker JoAnn Davidson Theatre, who had waited two years and one week for the concert.

Originally scheduled for September 26, 2019, the gig was postponed when Emmanuel got sick and was postponed again when the world got sick. He thanked fans for holding their tickets for 105 weeks with a jaw-dropping, alternatively bluesy and hopeful, rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

“Although it’s not fashionable, I believe in hope,” he said.

Dressed in jeans and a red-and-black-striped work shirt, Emmanuel performed on an unadorned stage with minimal lighting and a smoke machine for 100 wordless minutes save for singing the infectious “Nine Pound Hammer” by request and “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye,” a heart-wrenching, if mawkish, requiem for his father.

The house went momentarily dark after each number to add drama. But it wasn’t necessary.

The pin-drop quiet crowd gasped repeatedly during Emmanuel’s harmonics-laden “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” And originals like the high-test “Fuel” and the meandering “The Wide Ocean” elicited explosions of delight from the audience.

When it was over, Emmanuel had more than fulfilled his job to “to serve the music and serve the music to you.”

A standing ovation ensued.

While Emmanuel is nearly as fun to watch as he is to listen to, his finger-style acolyte and opener Andy McKee was more fun to watch. Limited to baritone guitar with his main axe in sickbay, McKee played 35 minutes of covers and originals nodding to influences such as Michael Hedges and Billy McLaughlin.

A proficient tapper, McKee is overflowing with talent. But his set - as anyone’s would - seemed less lustrous once Emmanuel started ripping into his.

Ness: named half for the Loch Ness Monster and half for Earthbound. Runs a tabloid and is terminally online. He’s a general nerd and certified gaymer so far as Minecraft is concerned, and streams occasionally, often speedruns or playing piano. Former gymnast. Likes bees. Doesn’t know how to shut up. He makes up for his height with the size of his ego; he might be kind and have the smarts to back it up, but he’s more than a little pretentious. His family is Egyptian and wealthy. Draws inspiration from Edward Elric and Ocarina/Majora Link, so take that as you will.

Rome: an orange in all but name, and then a little bit in name, because her surname is Clements (clementine)—a tough exterior but sweet enough once you get past that. Lives in liminal spaces. Works as a model and a professional athlete and looks good while doing it, to her repeated chagrin. Angry. Just... angry. For some reason I associate her with moths? I still don’t know why.

Adonis: Marlo’s older brother and a charming, unrepentant, arrogant bastard. That’s about it, really. He used to be a famous battler during the first game, but got busted for bad behavior, so now he works as a fashion consultant for Toni Kensa (the brand, not the person). Somewhat of a pathological liar; lied about his background constantly. His family weighs heavier on his shoulders than he lets show.

Crush: known as Davy off the Squidbeak conspiracist boards, an anxious wreck particularly interested in the original Agent 3. He puts on airs to be more confident and collected than he is, and has a soft spot for kids. Works for Ness’ tabloid and is attending law school. Like everyone else above him, he’s been around since at least 2018 and gone through a dramatic revamp or two. If posts in his tag don’t add up, that’s why.

Perry: an Octoweapon caretaker in her mid 40s, loyal not to the Octarian throne but the people, ever since getting demoted from engineer thanks to Three bulldozing all her projects. She’s just kind of perpetually sad except when she’s mad at Agent 3/Marlo. Phee was her wife.

Phee: an Octarian commander, late 30s, often too free-spirited for the force but a good leader and a better motivator. Went searching for missing Octarians once and fell through to the Deepsea Metro, but ditched Cuttlefish ASAP after the fact. Isn’t loyal to anyone. Has a fascination with textiles and kept muscle memory from years of service to the military. Doesn’t remember who Perry is. Also doesn’t use pronouns.

Andy: a boisterous sailor stationed on cargo ships and caught up with Grizzco. She sticks her nose where it doesn’t belong and never takes anything too seriously. Inherited her love of the sea from her older mother, whose ship she works on.

Aeron: a Pokémon or fandomless OC who never got too much press but predates Soda. They’re an agender psychic who inherited their mother’s deal with the devil and dabbles in the occult. Can tell the future, talk to ghosts, and in certain cases, walk through dimensions. Mellow and about as reverent as Shane “Did you just call the demon a motherfucker?” Madej.

Blake: Galar gymsona of sorts. Switches out teams all the time, sometimes to her benefit, sometimes not; specializes in high offense and cheap tactics. You can count on dark and fire types, though. Loves trivia and blusterous in personality—fretful, lighthearted, and packing enough punch to knock someone down if they get in her way.

Po: short for “anthroposene”—Minesona, a worldhopper and scavenger whose weapon of choice is an enchanted stone hoe which lets her load New Worlds at will. Klutz with a god complex. Used to be a Creative “god” before disappearing for a long, long time, and now she drifts about in Survival trying to find her way back in time—it seems to bend around her, though it’s just lag. Doesn’t specialize in a specific play-style, but dabbles in terraforming and building.
