🧵 what’s your favorite production and why?
Cats Paris. 1989-1990.
I still remember jotting down notes on my first watch of Mistoffelees and Victoria and literally I love everything about it.
(Yes I’m allowed to like things souley because they cater to my ship and hcs)
I had a discussion with @jelliclesgrace about the pas de deux and the storyline with Mistoffelees/Quaxo and Victoria here.
Mistoffelees/ Quaxo is mute in this production, and seems to be on the younger, coming of age side like Victoria.
What I like most about this is I think it furthers their connection in a beautiful and poetic way about how they communicate through dance instead of words. Especially in regards to the pas de deux and their interactions throughout.
Victoria besides also coming of age seems to be new to the customs and traditions of the tribe as she’s shown to be slightly out of sync with everyone else. Being the last to stop dancing at Grizabella’s arrival and seemingly having a harder time playing her part in pekes and pollicles. I like to headcanon this is her first or second ball which just gives me hundreds of new ideas.
Also helps that I absolutely love the costumes, makeup, and wigs here and how distinctive they are from the Broadway and London renditions. Just a very good time for me and the staging is one of my favorites. Even modern versions of cats paris tend to be productions I look very forward too do to the incredible lighting work.
But yes Mistoria propaganda is always appreciated for me.

i am a firm believer in that the pigtails Victoria had during the 80s were delightful, and that she should have more makeup than just a white face - so here is that

"The title of the films refers to the X rating used by the MPAA from 1968 to 1990, which indicated that a film was only suitable for an audience aged 16 or older. The idea behind the rating was that, unlike the other certificates, X would not be trademarked, and would allow filmmakers to release their film in theaters without needing to submit it to the MPAA for an age certificate. Notable films that were originally released with an X rating include A Clockwork Orange (1971), Fritz the Cat (1972), Last Tango in Paris (1972), Midnight Cowboy (1969), and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971). In the '70s, the porn industry would end up exploiting the X rating's lack of a trademark by releasing pornos in theaters with that same rating. Eventually, X became more associated with porn, and more and more theaters started refusing to show films with an X rating, forcing non-pornographic films to be censored to receive an R rating. In 1990, the MPAA discontinued the X rating and replaced it with NC-17. Unlike X, NC-17 was trademarked and could not be self-applied, but it still meant that most theaters would not show films with the rating, resulting in censorship, once again."

MOREEEE !!! MOREEEE !!!
rumpleteazer | 💰 🍹 🃏
PIGTAILS RUMP! PASTEL RUMP. blond rump. that is all. i really love that design. so i use it. the face markings are also meant to look like a stereotypical robber mask. i realized she looks a little fox-like while drawing her, which i didnt mind ! its fun !
her clothing design was already laid out for her so i left it virtually unchanged, asides from the pattern itself. imagine wearing clothes w a print of your best friends hair . that is rumpleteazer
even though 1 of her 3 words are impressionable, i think she is smarter than she lets on. i also think skimbleshanks is her dad. she'd be about 21 in human years
mungojerrie | 💸 🎰 🍾
PIGTAILS JERRIE AS WELL, BITCH ! i saw a jerrie w pigtails after i drew this and i felt so vindicated. i also based his design directly on 2019 mungojerrie because ommgggg transgender calico? trans little calico? i thought he deserved some pearls too. as well as a bell collar! it makes cats sneakier.
his clothing design is left unchanged too, asides from some fluff. he is also wearing a print of his best friends hair . smile 😃
hes just a funny fella. he totally doesnt have a history or anything. hed be 21 in human years
coricopat | 🍷 🔮 ♟
coricopat is pretty close to their replica design—the biggest difference being that the red in their design is warmer/purpler. that and the silver collar! i also had no idea what i was doing with her fit, so expect it to change in the upcoming art i do of him. i just wanted something gothy and flowy
hes also based on thalia, the muse of comedy. to keep the greek mythology theme going, and because i thought it was funny, and because (2x) i like... The Gimmick
i swear to god this cat knows things we dont. hed be like 22 in human years
tantomile | 🎭 🍩 🗝
tantomile is also close to his replica design. she has a gold collar. like i said w/ coricopat, the outfit is subject to change
as she was based on melpomene, the muse of tragedy, i decided to sacrifice identical makeup for the white mark on their muzzle being downturned like the frown of the tragedy mask :] giggle. smile
listen to all advice tantomile gives you. shed be also like 22 in human years
george | 🥏 🧋 🛹
i just had to give this (technical) swing some love. bless this happy background cat and his little :D smile. i decided to give him a simple little fit and made his fur/markings less plain white w some stripes. i think i also based his makeup off a victor costume ??
i think hes pouncival's older brother. hed also be 23 in human years
mr. mistoffelees | 🪄 ☕ 🌬
my silly, my funny. my little guy. i based their general Vibe on his john napier concept art, obc mistoffelees, 1990 paris mistoffelees, 2019 mistoffelees, and like. a fairys kiss of brentoffelees. i wish id have given him a bit of that il sistina style but i already had so many things going on LOL
it was definitely a very fun challenge to balance all of these. i also draw attention to the single white shoe—the cutest detail of timmy scotts misto
i definitely prefer a more visually unnerving, grown misto. and absolutely torn between portraying him as mute or verbal because on one hand... mute misto is so good. on the other hand.... oh my god. timothy scotts voice.jesus christ . i think hed be 23 in human years
the rum tum tugger | 🎤 🍽 🪞
WELCOME TO MY TWISTED WORLD. i really tried to keep tugger as cis guys i really did. but the thrall of a visually transgender tugger was too much to ignore. i already explained a lot of his design choices in my first posted drawing of it but like... blauhh... thigh garter, heart, golden whiskers/lashes. they are there. i also made his makeup a wee more theatrical w/ white on the chin to visually separate him from partridges tugger
i also decided to base his fur more on his obc design. like. terrence mann tugger. platinum blond spotted mane and head fur and such. i think it looks really good
im trying to hit the sweet spot between the goofy/serious/whiny/promiscuous portrayals of the him..... the man contains multitudes, you see. hed also be like 24 in human years and it goes without saying that hes one of deuts sons
AND THATS IT. stay tuned for more !

Hey fend I have a bone to pick with you!
I looked at the pintrest boards and although I love Em and Spencer is still and always will be life! (Good job on the boards btw you did well! Yay!! Go you! ♥️)
Also will you consider making a list of the Ros fav movies or fav plays for me plus why they love em... pretty pleasseee 💜
but
HEY! Don't distract me!!!!!
Why are you out here making side characters hot??? Kwan, Saint and Anton have no fucking logical reason to be that attractive. My eyes are ruined now. 🙄😭 thanks for that 😑
Sorry not sorry for making hot side characters 😌 (and you maybe be able to kissy kiss with Anton, who knows what the future holds)
BUT sorry sorry sorry for the delay on the ask.
Here it goes.
C
I think C looves Sci-Fi and fantasy movies, like Star Wars and Interstellar (also, they're definitely watching Dune 2), but I choose Watermelon Woman (1996) for Cassandra and Paris Is Burning (1990) for Callahan. I can imagine them age 14, starting questioning themself, hiding under the covers to watch these in the middle of the night and still considering their fav movie to this day.
For favorite play, right now I would say The America Play by Suzan-Lori Parks, because of its themes about living in your own shoes and also bc they consider it to be challenging.
Neil
I can see Neil saying his favorite movie is something classic like 12 Angry Men (1957) (why is he always telling half-truths?), but actually having a soft spot for The Sixth Sense (1999). I just imagine him putting it on TV the following week of his mother's funeral + after his grandma returned to her house and both of his siblings ending up in the living room watching it with him bc all three of them haven't be able to sleep well.
For a play, it's Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, because 1) he watched it once with his parents (it's also one of his dad's favorite plays, unfortunately), 2) the themes.
Joy
I don't feel like Joy has an actual favorite movie, I think it depends on her humor and changes basically every week bc she loves movie nights with friends and/or with her cat. The most recent one would be Boogie Nights (1997) because of vibes ✨️ and also Julianne Moore.
For play, it's The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. She wrote an analysis on it for college and now believes it's a classic for a reason. Same as movies, Joy's favorites changes for time to time, but this still holds the first place (for years now).
Spencer
Spencer has a lot of movies they consider close to heart, but some recent ones are Garoto/Kid (2015) and Sound of Metal (2019). They are captivated by the acting and the themes (they think a lot about feeling unnable to do what they love and about death, probably more than would be healthy).
I think Spencer likes a lot of plays, but never actually stopped to choose a favorite one. Right now, their answer would probably be Little Shop of Horrors, because of the combo themes + music + pratical effects + they did it once right after they started acting (as ensemble) and have good memories of it.
A
A watches a bunch of movies with their mom when she has free time, so they have multiple favorites to choose from. Right off the bat, Ameera would say Lady Vengeance (2005) and Adarsh would choose Memories of Murder (2003), simply because these are movies they really enjoyed and think about rewatching from time to time (unusual for them, who prefer to discover new movies).
Now, for play it would be Spring Awakening, because no one can convince A not to choose a musical. It's a dream role for them and one of the reasons they decided to quit ballet and choose theater (not as dramatic as it sounds, more like.... it help them realize it seemed interesting and challenging and captivating in a way they didn't feel like ballet did anymore).

Stats Time! Europe Saves Disney in the '70s
Tumblr media
The so-called "Dark Age" of animation, and especially Disney's, the entirety of the 1970s and a good part of the 1980s... The span of films made in the post-Walt years from THE ARISTOCATS (1970) all the way up until - depending on who you ask - THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985). Some extend it further, counting THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE (1986) and OLIVER & COMPANY (1988) as part of this "Dark" age or "Bronze" age or whatever.
I feel like those labels are an oversimplification...
While the general consensus is that the films made at Walt Disney Productions' animation wing in Burbank after the completion of THE JUNGLE BOOK and before the release of THE LITTLE MERMAID are relative low points for the company or that those films are just not-that-great (which is all subjective, I know at least one or two folks who make a case for this age of Disney being an "underrated" one), this was **not** a period of box office failure. That's for sure. Every film except THE BLACK CAULDRON made its money back. It is presumed that the Frankenstein-job clipshow feature that was 1977's THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH also did pretty well...
After all, if one of those 1970s movies were to lose money, then the animation unit could've circled the drain. Heck, BLACK CAULDRON's performance brought about discussions of shutting down Disney Animation. That's all it could've taken... One movie losing money, and that would be the end of that. Animation was often at the mercy of indifferent executives who saw it as something too costly and something that just had a hard time drawing in audiences.
Finding box office stats isn't easy for older Disney animated films, you usually come across exaggerated or inflated numbers of some kind. (For example, THE JUNGLE BOOK did not make $73m in North America in 1967/68. The total was closer to $13m. Maybe $73m was the number it adjusted to in like, the 1990s?) International numbers are even muddier, but sometimes, you do find some juicy helpful information..
More recently, I discovered just how much the European box office helped Disney's animated features soldier on during a transitional, rollercoaster period...
I have often pointed out on here that France and West Germany were where these films usually made bank, big time. THE ARISTOCATS, ROBIN HOOD, THE RESCUERS, and THE FOX AND THE HOUND were all massive there, Top 10 hits. I mean, given that THE ARISTOCATS is set in Paris and the French countryside, it being a blockbuster in France is a given. Despite some Americanization (Southern-accented dogs, the very late '60s-looking American hippie cat in Scat Cat's gang, etc.), a lot of which likely bypassed in the movie's French dub. But yeah, French moviegoers rewarded each of these movies nicely, as did Germans on the West side of the Iron Curtain. This all came off just how *huge*, like ginormous THE JUNGLE BOOK was in West Germany and how big it was in France...
Even THE BLACK CAULDRON did pretty great in France. THE RESCUERS outgrossed STAR WARS... STAR WARS... In France and West Germany, in the same release year... Wild, huh?
Meanwhile, these movies did not crack the Top 10 in America in their respective release years. THE JUNGLE BOOK would be the last Disney animated movie to make the Top 10 domestically, until BEAUTY AND THE BEAST... Some 24 years later.
The UK box office was also quite charitable. THE ARISOCATS and ROBIN HOOD did exceptionally there, THE RESCUERS did well too. Unusually, THE FOX AND THE HOUND did not break the UK top 20 in its release frame... Maybe that one was a little too American? Too gloomy? I couldn't tell you.
Speaking of the UK box office, that's where the homegrown WATERSHIP DOWN shined. It only did, as far as I know, fairly here in the states.
Don Bluth's THE SECRET OF NIMH was a minor success in France, ditto AN AMERICAN TAIL. According to some reports out there, Ralph Bakshi's HEY GOOD LOOKIN' did pretty well in Europe despite a nonexistent run in the U.S.
Fascinating... Other countries to the rescue, it seems.

PAST
Paris, France,  1990.
Claudette Baudelaire is in labor for the second time, it is raining in Paris and her husband is somewhere probably smoking a cigarette.  Her oldest son, Etienne, just five years old, is in the waiting room with her mother, and she tries not to think about how alone she feels right now, and thinks back to summers in Saint-Tropez instead, before she was a mother or a wife.
Octavia Clementine Baudelaire is born weighing 7 pounds, and her mother holds her for a total of ten minutes before she is swept up in the arms of her husband, the grandmother, nurses and doctors, and then placed into a bassinet at her side.
It wasn’t that Claudette didn’t love her two children, she just didn’t know how to be their mother just yet, only 25 with two children.
Octavia’s childhood is spent at her grandmother’s side, rather than her mother’s, Claudette would ship the children off to the south of france for the summers, and young Tavi would run barefoot through her grandmothers garden, trying to catch butterflies and dig up worms. Often, she would come in covered in mud, her older brother and best friend following close behind. She always had been the ring leader.
The rest of the year is spent in Paris with their parents,  or, with their nanny while mom shopped or went to the spa, or drank large glasses of red wine instead of eating dinner, or while dad worked, and worked, and sometimes snuck into the house late at night, heading into the shower before kissing them all good night.
Days were filled with classes, music for Etienne, dance, ballet in particular, for Octavia, they were out of the home well until dinner time, food, homework, bed.  A routine set up for children who didn’t know any better.  Or so their parents thought. Etienne was easier to persuade, but Octavia despised the idea of conforming to her parent’s idea of love, but had no idea how to express it, she would spend time in the ballet studio instead, where she was praised for natural talent, where she soared.
Whatever their parents couldn’t give them emotionally,  they gave them financially. Toys and games, trips, electronics, whatever their little hearts desired.   Little hearts however grew into big hearts, and the Baudelaire children turned into the Baudelaire teenagers, priveleged and beautiful, the entire world was theirs.
she had a marvelous time, ruining everything.
Sixteen year old Tavi only cared about two things, her social life, and ballet. Often times, the two would intermingle. Octavia was a student at the Opera national, and what many would say, one of the best, well on her way to professional dancing, she had just about everything going for her, from being a beautiful dancer, a socialite in her own right and her mothers good looks, Tavi had the entire universe in her hands, and she refused to squander it. Days were filled with school and ballet, nights were filled with parties, galas, drinking with her friends or vacations across Europe, money and status were never an issue, her name was on the list for all of the best clubs and events, and in the morning she’d chug a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, and step back into perfect girl, perfect daughter, perfect student, perfect ballerina energy.
The one thing that didn’t interest Tavi? Dating. While her friends were coupled off and having fun in that respect, the farthest it got for her was tabloid rumours of dating every boy she ever walked outside with, but Tavi had more important things to worry about, life had too much to offer, and she could tie herself down to someone later, when she accomplished her dreams.
You know what they say about peer pressure, what started as a virginity pact between friends, and Tavi’s need to stay friends with these girls she grew up with,  ended up with sixteen year old Tavi pregnant, watching the end of her life begin with a pink positive sign.
This is when Claudette Baudelaire finally acted like a mother. She watched the color drain from her daughter’s face, the way she cried over losing her dreams because of a mistake with a boy she didn’t even have feelings for, and she stepped in, a letter to schools that her grandmother was sick and they’d spend the rest of the year in the south of france, two  promises made,  that this baby would be raised as a sibling, and that Tavi would go on to make her life happen.
Nine months later, Simone Baudelaire was born, a sixteen year age gap between her and her big sister,  Tavi spent an entire month after crying in bed.
give me back my girlhood, it was mine first
Having a baby changes you, no matter what age you are, but when you’re sixteen years old and staring at the face of your baby everyday, watching as your parents raise her like their own, it sort of just fucks you, and you entire life up.  Tavi has no idea how to go back to normal, to parties and dancing, she couldn’t imagine a world separate from the one where she had had a baby, where she was somebodies mother, even if she wasn’t technically.
But she had made a promise, hadn’t she? She would go on and live her life, go back to school and dancing and her friends, go back to buying matching prada purses with her friends and too short sparkly dresses photographed on front pages of tabloids.
So she went back, to her friends who obsessed over her semester vacation, wishing they could get away too,  back to late nights at clubs where they kept champagne and high end vodka flowing until dawn, and back to ballet, the only thing that kept her breathing.
When the anxiety attacks started, she was at a party in someone’s penthouse, she finds herself gulping in cold paris air on a balcony. She smoke’s two cigarettes before she calls it a night, waving goodbye and kissing cheeks before she’s back home in a car that her parents home, with the same driver that used to drive her to primary school.
Ballet becomes therapy too,  she replaces racing thoughts with run throughs.
so keep on pretending pretty girl
Tea for two is Simone’s second birthday theme, and Tavi’s last day in her family home, a flat in the center of the city,  more training, more partying, something new with a signature on a lease. Dad pays the rent, pays for training pays for a driver, but he doesn’t pay for the French 75’s at the gay bar that’s a 15 minute walk from her place.
She is 18 and kissing girls in dark bars and discovering that maybe she didn’t care for boys because this is what life is all about, drinking lemony drinks and kissing women with pillowy lips.  In the morning though, she pretends none of it happens, but the lingering smell of jasmine perfume lingers on the pillow next to her.
It takes her years before she can admit to herself that she likes girls, 21 years old with her first girlfriend,  it’s dinners at home and secret meetings until she’s broken up with. It goes like this a lot for a few years, but there is a bit in her stomach that she thinks might swallow her whole if she tells anyone else.
This is something that is just for her.
25 is a milestone, her mother had two kids by now and it reminds her that she had one at sixteen, a nine year old girl back home that she barely even knows outside of postcards and pristinely wrapped gifts sent in the mail.
25 comes with a move to America because the NYC ballet has been after her for years and she finally gives in, Paris feels stifling and she needs a change of scenery.  Daddy buys her a loft in Brooklyn and she jets off the first chance gets.
Days are filled with too much caffiene and eight hours of rigorous training, nights are filled with drinks in dark bars of clubs that have her name on a list somehow, or gallery openings, or gala’s that have her parent’s name on the donors list. There are still paparazzi when she comes out the doors past midnight, stumbling a little too much.  She goes from the Paris’  It Girl to New Yorks
Life is a lot like Paris but its more than three thousand miles away from everything she’s ever known and that makes her feel more alive than ever.
PRESENT
Nine years later and Tavi is 34 years old, living in a Brooklyn loft with windows so big she feels like she’s in the clouds sometimes.  There’s a cat named fish that gets black hair all over lavender pillow cases, and fresh flowers from the market every sunday on her dining table.   She drinks oatmilk lattes daily, consumes sushi from nobu at least once a week, and she has grown obsessed with ice hockey, watching it and playing it.
She’s still on the cover of tabloids for late night adventures and getting caught smoking with a diplomat in the bathroom at a gala,  but she was also featured in Vogue when she became a principal for the NY Ballet.
She’s out to everyone but her family and the media.   Everything is good until her sister shows up at her door, freshly 18 with tears streaks down her cheeks and a haunting look in her eyes.
She knows.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
Her older brother Etienne, he is five years older than her, and they grew up very close, as best friends. They are still, I would hope, very close, the only two people with the same childhood.
Honestly, I would love to see either of her parents here, they'd both be around 60. Mom is a socialite and dad is in finance.
her best friend group! would love 3 or 4 besties for Tavi that just get her. perhaps the only people outside of her family that know about the simone situation.
the frenemy! would love if it was someone within the ballet world but also could be anything, she's very much a socialite as well so keep your friends close and your enemies closer vibes?
friends from france! you know, those girls she wanted so badly to stay friends with, the girls who were rich and pretty and mean girls which was not the vibe that tavi really wanted to give off, but one she sort of fell into. would love to see them trying to one up each other but in that weird saccharine way.
exes of all sorts! tavi is a lesbian so please keep this in mind, she hasn't dated a cis man since she was in high school!
the beard! oh, tavi is out and proud with the people she loves but she's not ready to let the media dive into her personal life, so sometimes, but especially if she's currently single, she brings this person to events to pass as her "boyfriend" so no one asks questions.
people that she parties with! you know those people you only hang out with to get drinks and dance on bars with? would love a few of these for tavi!
the opposites attract! gosh i would love a woman that is all tattoos and leather in comparison to tavi's tutu's and red lipstick vibes, someone who challenges her!
bring me your ideas! i am so open to anything within reason!

ooh I would LOVE to hear your impressions of three or four cats. and the wife. and anybody else you choose
Sure thing bestie<333
For the cats I'll do Cassandra, Bombalurina, and Skimbleshanks since I don't think we've talked about them in depth.
Cassandra:
First impression: Kinda thought she was just like a cool, loner, suave kinda lady. Meant to represent a cat that really couldn't care less about you.
Impression now: She's kinda mystical and ethereal, I feel like she overhears all the gossip. I also still think shes a cool loner type.
Favorite moment: In 1998 I love the abrupt closeup for the "moonlit eye" line bcuz it always freaks people out.
Idea for a story: It'd be fun to have a story where she gets her fur ruffled a bit bcuz she's normally so unbothered.
Unpopular opinion: no romance for her she's too good for it.
Favorite relationship: Her and Alonzo awkward friendship
Favorite headcanon: She and Mistoffelees scheme together.
Bombalurina:
First impression: Just thought she was the typically "sexy mean girl" type character and didn't think about her too much tbh
Impression now: She's so ahefuehakfhdakfea I love how she is like a cornerstone of the community and how shes so caring, but also like she's such a baddie. Anyway I love her.
Favorite moment: In Bustopher Jones(1998) when Jenny gets the flower from him and she shoots him the dirtiest look for a split second.
Idea for a story: She should get to kill Macavity
Unpopular opinion: I don't think her an Demeter are dating or even sisters I think they've just trauma bonded
Favorite relationship: Her and Demeter would be the obvious choice, but tbh I think whatever her and Tugger have is really funny.
Favorite headcanon: She's definitely fucked Macavity and honestly had a pretty good time about it.
Skimbleshanks:
First impression: The silliest of all time :)
Impression now: The silliest of all time :)
Favorite moment: in the paris 1990 performace where he just yanks Mistoffelees around(pretty sure this was him its hard to tell).
Idea for a story: I think it's be cute to have a little story establishing how like all the London city employees know him
Unpopular opinion: He's probably one of the most disconnected from the tribe bcuz he's employed
Favorite relationship: honestly idk, maybe him and asparagus cuz they're like the only two of that age range.
Favorite headcanon: He actually wears the little waist coat. the humans put it on him.
I don't know if you wanted me to do your wife or mine so I'll do both.
Belos(i'm only giving my general impression bcuz I don't know that much): He's a Puritan, everyone is wrong about him. He'd probably creep me out and I probably wouldn't like him sorry. I probably wouldn't like the owl house in general tho. He's definitely a man, I like how strange and diseased he is and I love the look on people's faces when u say hes ur wife.
Ghostmaker aka Minhkhoa Khan <3:
First impression: I though his design was so cool and I was like "fuck i gotta figure out how to pirate comics so i can read about him" anyway here we are like a year(2 years maybe? idk anymore) later.
Impression now: he's so everything to me. I think he's such a complicated and pained guy and I love him the way he is. I think he's silly but in like a badass way
Favorite moment: When he kills madam midas its like The Moment of all time.
Idea for a story: What if....he was happy... and loved... idk
Unpopular opinion: Rhea Sinha was an interesting love interest and backstory element for him.
Favorite relationship: I love his strange and silly relationship with Icon I could write an essay about it.
Favorite headcanon: The only thing between him and substance abuse disorder is sheer force of will and the tools of modern technology.
anyway thats it :)

1990s Deep House Playlist
Nice little update here to this growing 90s deep house playlist of mine for you all. This week I bring you a few bangers that come from three of my favorite mixes of all time: Dimitri From Paris' Monsieur Dimitri's De-Luxe House of Funk from 1997, which features Second Crusade's "May the Funk Be With You" and Sir Raymond Mang's "Number One" on it; and then Harry the Bastard's Club "H" and Tom Middleton's A Jedi's Night Out, both of which are from 1999 and feature Global Communication's "Secret Ingredients" mix of "The Way" on them.
So let's start with "The Way," because it looks like it was actually recently added to Spotify within the last year, and really, I've been wanting that thing on this playlist for a lot longer than that. An extended, near-twelve-minute groove from the UK duo of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton that just flows so hypnotically and manages to slowly and seamlessly transition into a completely different song in its second half. And as part of that Jedi's Night Out mix—which is actually a clever pun, because an alias that Global Communications used was Jedi Knights—it definitely has this classy, cosmo-planetary spaceship lounge vibe to it, and currently only has around 6,300 plays on Spotify. And that play count should go up as more and more people realize that this deep classic from the mid-90s is finally available on the service.
Next, "May the Funk Be With You," by Glasgow's Paul Hunter, operating under the moniker of Second Crusade. The great Dimitri From Paris really seems to be partial to dance tracks that implement a retro sound, from 60s cocktail lounge grooves, to 70s and early 80s disco, funk, and jazz fusion stuff. And this is a track that definitely has some of that in it, with its samplings of two different songs: 1976's "Intergalactic Love Song," by Charles Earland, which supplies the tune's delightfully whiny and full synth, and Denise LaSalle's own 1980 song, "May the Funk Be With You," which is responsible for its lovely vocals. So, older sounds blended with a modern house beat. Really excellent track that's currently sitting near 79,000 plays on Spotify 😌.
And lastly, "Number One," by London's Sir Raymond Mang. Very appropriately titled, this track appears to have been the first solo venture of Mang aka Laj's own career, and he seems to have aimed directly at the sun with it. A super chill and beachy vibe with a terrific lead synth that really doesn't come about until well halfway through the song, first evoking the same liberatory feeling of a keyboard solo from a classic 80s freestyle tune, and then following that up with some improvisational jazziness 🥰. All laid over a sweet lather of chill keys and a funky bass groove too. Nearing 129,000 Spotify plays.
Second Crusade - "May the Funk Be With You" Global Communication - "The Way (Secret Ingredients Mix)" Sir Raymond Mang - "Number One"
But folks, you know we're not nearly done with this post yet, because, as has become sort of my specialty here, I also added some bonus tracks to the YouTube version of this playlist too, which can't be found on Spotify 👀. A couple of these tunes are derived from that same Dimitri From Paris mix, and the other one comes from quite possibly the most eclectic, prolific, and underrated electronic musician of all time, Japan's Susumu Yokota.
Back in 1996, Yokota released a full-length LP called Cat, Mouse and Me on the legendary, Frankfurt-based-and-Sven-Väth-co-founded Harthouse label. And on that album is a track called "One Way" that also appeared on Harthouse's eclectic EP sampler, Taste It, Vol. 2, the following year as well. Somewhat simple in its construction, and with a bit of a vibe that feels more germane to early 90s techno, "One Way" gets satisfyingly cinched together when Yokota brings in a stabby flute melody to fill in all of its empty space. Currently sitting at over 10,900 YouTube plays.
Karma - "High Priestess" Yokota - "One Way" Dimitri From Paris - "Free Ton Style (Monsieur D's Classique Extension)"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, here's where things currently stand with this playlist: on Spotify, we have 30 songs that clock in at 3 hours and 55 minutes, and over on YouTube and YouTube Music, we now wave 75 songs that clock in at 9 hours and 24 minutes. So if you want a full day or night of non-stop 90s deep house goodies, that YouTube one is definitely for you, as it has a slew of tracks from what was probably Chicago's greatest deep house label of the decade, Guidance, on it, and some great ones from a 12-inch compilation series called Bakchich that was released on Parisian label Basenotic as well, almost all of which aren't on Spotify either.
And if all of that just seems way too long for you, I'm breaking some of my 90s deep house down by year too, rather than just decade.
1996 Deep House: YouTube / YouTube Music 1997 Deep House: YouTube / YouTube Music 1998 Deep House: YouTube / YouTube Music
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
