Peter Tork with his brothers, Chris and Nick.
(Photo 1) “It shows Peter, when he was 14, with his arms around his brothers Chris (four years) and Nick (twelve), in the living room of Wynward Hill Farm in Williamantic, Conn. ('The Thread Capitol of America'!). Peter was a freshman at Wyndham High School when this picture was taken.” - Catherine McGuire Straus, 16 Magazine, December 1967

“When I was in junior high school, I was a punk. I wanted people to love and admire me for my gentle wit, my talented music-making and my beauty of personality. Instead I was loathsome and irritating and quarrelsome and I didn’t know why people didn’t like me. But I began to think and meditate on it. Meditation is the only way the personality can be improved, and gradually I began to work things out and better myself. I like to give someone as many ‘different sheets of music paper’ as I can — behave differently toward him each time I see him. That is the only way someone can know what the real me is like. You can’t know the real me by only talking to me. I believe that you can tell more about people by the way they looking walking away from you than you can by what they say. In the highest sense, I think a human life is art, that art includes all expression. The way I play a guitar expresses something, and the way I scratch my thigh expresses something. I think my guitar music is good; that is where I haven’t made any compromises. I think it really expresses me. And it’s going to be better. Our new Colgems album is a terrific thing. Everything you do is an accumulation of everything you have done in your life. If each action could be fully understood, it would explain everything about you. That is the ideal. In everything is its opposite. If you curse with great violence, there’s a tiny spot in which your gentleness appears, and if you say, ‘I love you,’ with great tenderness and passion, there is also an indication of hostility and anger.” - Peter Tork, Seventeen, August 1967
“Windham resident Terry LaVoie said she and Tork went to Windham High School together and were, eventually, members of the first graduating class at E.O. Smith High School in 1959. She said she has known him since seventh-grade. ‘He was a lot of fun,’ LaVoie said, referring to him as a ‘class clown’ who loved to do small pranks. She recalled attending Tork’s 13th birthday party and she was the only girl there, other than his sister, Anne Thorkelson. LaVoie said his mother gave her a potholder to embroider as a party favor and she had it for many years, though it eventually wore out. She saw him perform at the old Shaboo Inn in Mansfield, which John co-owned with David Foster and others, as well as at The Monkees 30th reunion show at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford. ‘To me, he was still just a person,’ LaVoie said, noting she got a VIP pass and talked to him backstage at the Oakdale show. Tork gave back to various local charities over the years, including performing in a Battle of the Bands benefit show for E.O. Smith, a benefit for Joshua’s Trust in Ashford in October 2010 and a fundraiser at the Willimantic Elks Club in April 2010 for Bailey’s Garden in Lebanon.” - The Chronicle, February 22, 2019

Here is a full list of all the books I read in 2023 and links to the art I’ve made for them.
Just a few quick notes. I didn’t make art for everything I read. I also fell off the wagon a bit toward the end and went through an art block. Not sure if I’ll continue this project into 2024 but I might do some variation. We’ll see.
Also, I read some absolutely filthy (and ridiculous) stuff sometimes. So be warned.

Shortest book read: Ice Planet Honeymoon: Raahosh and Liz by Ruby Dixon
Longest book read: Winter by Marissa Meyer
Current read started in 2023 but will finish in 2024: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

The Disenchantment by Celia Bell [Review]
Tumblr media
3/5 ⭐Stars
The Disenchantment, is exactly that. The novel starts out strong by introducing Baroness Marie Catherine, a wife you begin to sympathize with. Haven't we all had a less than perfect relationship that made you think of what life could be like if you could just escape it? In that, we soon learn of Victoire Rose de Bourbon, Mademoiselle de Conti, a free-spirited woman with a lack experience in the realm of maturity, with whom society allows to roam feral. So what happens naturally, is exactly what we would expect from Victoire. A couple of other major characters in this story is the painter Lavoie, and policeman Gabriel Nicolas de le Reynie and the Lady's Maid Jeanne.
I so wanted to love this story. I really liked the way the perspective switched and changed in a way that felt like you were watching a movie (and it wasn't confusing at all). I also appreciated the storytelling that took place throughout the novel, as it shows you exactly how the Baroness and Victoire could have gotten into the situation they found themselves in. Of course a woman that spent so much time in a make-believe land would find herself facing very real perils of her actual life. And of course she could easily pretend that it wasn't as bad as it actually was.
The reason I call this book a disenchantment, in itself, is because though the story is very slow, it does tug you through the emotions of the Marie Catherine and Victoire. You find yourself starting to become disenchanted with the story, you already know how it's going to end. You can taste the way the deed as tainted an otherwise exciting experience and just how fragile the concept of their love was.
I also find it disenchanting that the end of the story is a loose end. This must be because the author is going to write a sequel to the story-- otherwise, it's a very poor attempt at tying loose ends. What of Victoire after her talk with King's favored Mistress? What about Lavoie and Reynie after the chase? And Marie Catherine and her children? How did that play out on the night of her departure? And of course you cannot forget Jeanne and Henri. Was Henri ever punished? Did Jeanne make it to a better place with her treasure? I'm hoping the ending is not just a sloppy tie together.
Because of the slow read, the loose plotline ending, and the general wanderings that happen throughout the story (which sometimes feel like they're there to take up space on the page to further the page count), I give this book 3 stars out of 5. It definitely was not my favorite read in 2023.

My Headcanons about Five Survive characters:
• Simon and Red loved Gritty the mascot when he was created, had insides jokes about him and all, but annoyed Maddy with it to the point she has a visceral reaction to the word “gritty”. (Almost as visceral as her reaction to “Mom”, but in a different way.)
• Maddy only keeps so many hair ties on her wrists because of how often Red doesn’t have time to put her hair up before school and forgets a hair tie of her own. Red constantly loses them and Maddy never gets any back. Maddy doesn’t mind this.
• Maddy’s dad taught Maddy and Red how to drive together. Maddy nearly hit their mailbox twice in the first few lessons.
• After the events of the book, Reyna gave Red her number in case she ever needed someone to talk to about the things she couldn’t say to anyone else.
• Simon’s favorite character from The Office is Jim.
• Red wakes from her coma on Maddy’s birthday.
• Oliver and Catherine really did love Maddy, but in the way you love a possession, because she was a Lavoy, not because she is Maddy. (Contrary to the love Red holds for Maddy, because while she does think of Maddy as hers, that possessiveness is an expression of her affection for Maddy as a person.)
• Arthur and Red do meet at the pier for closure, but much later than May 8th. (based on the timeline of events and time Red needs to heal, it is quite literally impossible for them to meet on the 8th.)
• Red and Maddy used to have sleepovers every week before Grace was killed.

Scattered Star Wars thoughts: - Celebration is just a bit over a week away AAAHHHHHH.  I don’t know what I’m most anxious about--I imagine we’re probably going to be getting a lot of news about IX, The Mandalorian, and Fallen Order.  I’m cautiously excited about The Mandalorian, I’m eager to learn more details about the setting and purpose of it, but I am SO NERVOUS about IX and Fallen Order, especially if they get the Jedi or the Force wrong in either of them.  I mean, and Master and Apprentice also comes out during/right after Celebration, then the end of the month has Dooku: Jedi Lost, so IT’S A VERY STRESSFUL TIME.  SO MUCH COULD GO SO WRONG. - I finished the Queen’s Shadow audiobook, and I’m in the same place with the story as I was after finishing the text version of it, but I’m glad I listened to the audio version as well.  The beginning was a little rough, but the further it went along, the more it smoothed out and was a really good reading from Catherine Taber!  I liked that she wasn’t trying too hard to make the narration Padme’s voice, so I didn’t get jolted out of the story when someone else was speaking.  I also felt like she wasn’t trying too hard to be TCW Padme here, that of course she would sound very similar, but there were inflections and tones that were just different enough that I wound up really liking that.  And I enjoyed her Sabe and Tonra a lot, it helps that Tonra doesn’t have a film voice to contrast against (this is what throws me out of Marc Thompson doing Leia’s voice or January LaVoy doing Han’s voice, in addition to how their voices just don’t have the same timbre as those characters), but overall she made some great reading choices, once she got into the book a ways! - I finished listening to the audiobook excerpt from Master and Apprentice and I love that Jonathan Davis is doing Qui-Gon’s Space Irish accent!  I enjoyed his Dooku pretty well and so far my only complaint is that “Mol” sounds exactly like “Maul”, so there’s a half second of cognitive dissonance.  But I really like the reading so far, enough that I briefly thought about hearing the audiobook version instead of reading the text book! Also, listening again, it’s REALLY unclear if Dooku is meant to be using Force lightning or if it’s meant to be his lightsaber.  Qui-Gon can’t see it, it’s just flashes of light and the smell of ozone, both of which are frequently attributed to lightsabers.  But the way it’s hidden from his view (and it only sounds like a blaster in the audio version) makes me wonder if it is meant to be lightning, since it’s deliberately vague. I’m kind of :/ about Qui-Gon being 14 here (if this book tries to recanonize the whole “must be a Padawan by 13 or you’re kicked out” when TCW established that 16 was the usual starting age, as well as the whole “kicked out” thing doesn’t seem to be a thing at all, when it was the that the war was forcing them EARLIER, not LATER, meaning the pre-war Padawans should be older, not younger, I’m going to have to throw this book across the room) but I’ll see how it goes in the book and I did greatly enjoy Dooku clearly being very worried about Qui-Gon, because OMG I HAVE BEEN SO HUNGRY FOR DOOKU & QUI-GON INTERACTION.  SO.  HUNGRY. I WILL TAKE THIS TINIEST OF MORSELS AND ENJOY IT ALREADY. Scattered Star Wars Thoughts/2019 Resolutions Update: - Rebels Magazine #13 - Queen’s Shadow audiobook Current total:  174/520

INNERVISION from Martin Messier // 14 lieux on Vimeo.
DESCRIPTION Innervision is an outstanding choreographic play for 60 interprets and 30 tables. Presented in the public space, this work depicts an intergenerational group composed of dancers of all ages. They interpret, in unison, a partition of micro gestures to give them a whole new resonance. With Innervision, an inclusive and convening project, the multidisciplinary artist Martin Messier proposes to give back their whole value to daily human gestures and to reveal their high level of poesy. cop
Thanks to a technology developed years ago by 14 lieux, the movements of this partition will be dictated to the interpreters by way of instructions directly transmitted to their ears thanks to a wireless communication system. This soundly sequence will act as a canvas for the play that interpreters will have to follow without learning the choreographic sentence. The wireless communication device used in Innervision will allow an optimal synchronization between the movements and the sounds and will create a game of association between the two. By superimposing sounds and movements, this soundly montage created by Martin Messier will amplify and magnify these gestures and make them resonate. Minimalistic and stripped, this work will make a certain image of the burden of solitude resonate. Innervision opens up a dialogue between interiority and exteriority: the individual, what he carries inside him and the outside world with whom he interacts.

1- Je pensais pas - Daniel Lavoie et Catherine Major
Je pensais pas qu'un jour J'aimerais si fort Que rêver de partir serait Comme rêver de mourir

It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes But it might just save your life That's the power of love
3- Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
I travel the world And the seven seas Everybody's looking for something
4- Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
This youthful heart can love you and give you what you need But I'm too old to go chasing you around Wasting my precious energy
5- Never Meant to Hurt You - Good Shoes
Met a girl on a plane to Canada Drinking wine, watching Maid in Manhattan My friends are getting drunk I think that Joel threw up Things were so much better when we were young
6- Stuck in the Middle With You - Stealers Wheel
And I'm wondering what it is I should do, It's so hard to keep this smile from my face, Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place
7- Wild - Royal Teeth
Just because we're growing up, it doesn't mean we've had enough When times are hard we'll smile and say we're not afraid of anything
8- Take a Chance on Me - ABBA
My love is strong enough to last when things are rough It's magic You say that I waste my time but I can't get you off my mind No I can't let go 'Cause I love you so
9- O-o-h Child - The Five Stairsteps
Some day, yeah We'll get it together and we'll get it all done Some day When your head is much lighter Some day, yeah We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun Some day When the world is much brighter Ooh-oo child Things are gonna get easier
10 - Feels Like Love - MIKA (including a lot of this one because it screams Shyan to me XD)
Is this how it is After just one kiss Did you really think That I invented this Was it you or me Or the mess we made Did we crash too hard That's the risk we take Did I run to you Did you run to me If we wait too long Then we'll never see
I’m tagging @fancybois @hiriahb and anyone else who feels like doing it!
